the details: pureology colour care ambassador, ruth roche, created this look using pureology products and her styling expertise for makeup loves me at RARE salon in tribeca NYC.

the pureology bride is: "modern and classic, but she has a bit of an edge to her." ruth and i discussed creating a look that reflects pureology's image and also working a braid into the look. i love how braids manage to be sophisticated and girlish all at once and definitely want to work one into my look for the big day.

ruth's advice: look at your wedding hair as an investment, like your dress. in order to get the look you want, you have to put in some work. go for your hair trial 2-3 moths before. but also keep an open mind, it's hard to create the exact same look twice. realize your hair may not be identical to how it looked at your hair trial and keep an open mind.

my new product crush: after ruth applied colour stylist root lift my hair suddenly had an amazing amount of volume. i could get into this!

lately three friends have asked me where i go for my laser treatments, so i figured it was worth re-mentioning my favorite laser specialists in NYC, beam laser spa. located right at columbus circle, here are the reasons i think beam stands apart from the competition:

owned by two beautiful brazilian sisters: liza and andrea, because of their own struggles with hair removal, are experts. this business is their passion, and that personal touch sets the tone for this incredibly well-run boutique.
impeccably clean and beautiful space: their waiting area is a calming sanctuary. every time i go in for a visit i say i'm going to take my computer and work there for a half hour after my appointment, and they keep telling me i should. next time i think i'm going to take them up on it!
own restroom: this is a rarity in NYC, and a major plus if you are going in for bikini treatment and want to, um, freshen up before.
caring staff: i've worked with all three laser specialists now, and each one is totally compassionate about my low pain threshold. i don't know if i'd make it through the treatments without them -- thanks ladies!

to the theatre with MAC cosmetics: stage makeup tips.

last week MAC cosmetics invited me to see the broadway musical anything goes to celebrate the release of their nautically themed collection "hey, sailor!". anything goes takes place on a cruise ship sailing NYC to england in the 1930s with a motley crew of gangsters, socialites and sailors. like the makeup in MAC's "hey, sailor!" line, the look is dominated by true red lips, clean skin, and neat black liner.

before the show we went backstage and met with the angelina avollone, who used MAC makeup to create all the actors' looks for the show.

her tips for creating stage and everyday looks:

there is no single MAC shade that defines the anything goes lip, all of the MAC's classic reds, from ruby woo to russian red are used in the musical. each actor's shade is selected based on their coloring.
however, angelina says a "favorite red" is red racer lipstick paired with throw me a line! pro longwear lip pencil (both are part of the hey, sailor! collection).
actors always keep their lipstick and powder on the side of the stage for touch-ups. this served as a reminder to me that just like in real life, skin and lips need periodic refreshing.
male actors wear a makeup minimum of bronzer and spice lip pencil.
angelina's tip for creating a clean but intriguing summery eye uses handforged and blue stripe powerpoint eye pencils. use the navy shade (blue stripe) on the inner rim and the gold hue (handforged) along the outer rim. i plan to give this look a try this week.

the NARS bride is: "there is no one NARS bride, the look can be whatever you want it to be, but the NARS look is definitely all about the lip", says cindy. with that in mind i told her to give me a true NARS lip for the bridal look.

cindy's DIY tip: complexion is the most important part, because your skin is most of your face. be sure you work hard to create a flawless base for any look you create. NARS hydrating freshening lotion is a gentle exfoliator that cindy used all over my face before even applying a primer. she even used to totally flatten a zip on my chin. to give the skin extra glow she combined the foundation with an equal amount of the brand's brightening serum and used her fingers to work it into my skin.

my favorite part: the coolest tip i learned from cindy was to the liner the upper inner lash line to create a more extreme lash look. it made me squirm, but it was so worth it!

for the past 3 years as my birthday (june 10th) nears i become panicked about developing the right anti-aging skincare regimen.

i can be a little bad (read: lazy) about my skincare, despite knowing how crucial it is for looking good in the years to come. i started my newest skincare routine two weeks -- and my skin is softer, brighter and more even tone than it's been in months. but the best part is how incredibly easy (less than 30-seconds a day at bedtime) it is.

the routine:

1. cynthia rowley's band-aids: are the sort of thing i hoard. but, weddings are a time to be generous, so i will be including a full box of these fashionable bandages in the next bathroom box i create.

2. secret outlast invisible solid in completely clean (travel size) - sharing deodorant is never OK. rather than including one big deodorant or that icky spray-on type, i put at least 3 secret minis in the basket, that way each user can start with a fresh deodorant, and feel free to slip it her purse as a little souvenir.

3.assorted redken hairsprays - you don't toy with women's hair at a formal occasion. many of the items for these baskets can be picked up at the drugstore, but for hairspray - be sure to get salon quality products. redken's pure force 16 non-aerosol fixing spray is must.

my crush on all things bobbi brown only intensifies with each new launch. i was hoping that the shimmering fragrance oil* in the miami collection would be the one new bobbi product that i could live without.

having been to the beach in miami (once; exactly this time of year, three years ago) and while i had a wonderful time, i didn't necessarily think i would want to smell like it. but, the shimmering fragrance oil bears the same scent as the beach eau de parfum - which is a combination of some of my favorite scents; sand jasmine, sea spray, and mandarin. i'm not sure it reminds of the beach, certainly not miami beach, but i am sure it's exactly how i want to smell until september. also, it's micro-fine shimmer reminds me of what my skin looks like after spending a day at a beach with lots of mica in the sand.

i'm not really one to rave about primer. anything that adds steps to makes my makeup routine usually doesn't stick, but benefit's the porefessional* improves the look of their divine hello flawless oxygen wow foundation (read about how much i love that here) that it's become part of my daily routine.

last wednesday i visited to the braid bar at the john barrett salon for to switch up my style. kayley pak, stylist, presented me with their menu book of braid ideas, complete with celeb examples. i gravitated towards the milkmaid braid*, which would get my hair totally off my face and create a sort of classic grecian look. kayley was incredibly focused on making sure the braid looked "just right", and the end result was beautiful.

i love the braid bar because braids look so effortless, but can be very hard to execute on one's own, especially the more complicated styles. plus, braids are the perfect mix of sophisticated and girly. a braided style works equally well for a wedding or just an special evening with friends - and is especially great for hot summer nights when you want your hair off your neck.

tip: to prolong your braid's life wrap your hair in a silk scarf overnight to prevent it from getting fuzzy. braids can last up to 4 days with proper care ( i can usually get 2-3 out of mine and my hair is temperamental).

truly any time of year is a good time to invest in new makeup brushes, but spring always feels like the natural time to do it. this spring i've just added 3 new real techniques brushes* to my collection - the powder brush, shading brush, and fine liner brush.

spring - summer 2012 hair trends.

beauties last week i met celebrity stylist, nick arrojo at a meeting of the the empire style council (a board of trend experts that advises the empire beauty school's curriculum). nick has his own eponymous product line and salon, with the ARROJO studio in NYC seeing over 260 clients on an average saturday. this sort of volume means mr. arrojo both creates and observes many of current street trends for hair.

here's what nick predicts will be popular salon requests for spring and summer 2012:

natural waves - less customers are requesting brazilian blowouts or flat ironing and opting or hair with a little bit of body.

ombre - rather than highlights, customers continue to demand hair that gradually gets lighter for a sun-kissed feel.

blocked color - similar to the color blocking seem in fashion, hair color has a much more geometric. chunky pieces of bright hair color (cotton candy pink, electric blue) will continue to be big through the summer.

haircuts that are layered internally - this creates volume without making hair too "piece-y", making it easy to wear hair up and down.

beauties, i'm heading to san diego today. this year i'll be celebrating easter with carne asada fries, fish tacos and lush's easter bath bombs (i've packed them, because taking baths in hotel bathrooms is one of my favorite things). lush created two specialty bath bombs for easter 2012 - donkey oaty* and hippy chick*. i was going to recommend them as easter alms for those on a diet, but both can rival any chocolate bunny in cuteness and would make for an adorable addition to any easter basket.

donkey oaty actually resembles a tie-died scotty dog, my spirit animal (though not necessarily tie-died). scented like the lush fragrance "charity pot", donkey oaty has a floral, springy scent. hippy chick is the bath bomb-ification of lush's hippie chick shower gel meaning the scent is a mash-up of grapefruit, bergamot and frankincense (though to me it looks like the bath bomb-ification of duck-duck-goose).
