The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO) will host its sixth Annual International Asbestos Awareness Conference in Chicago, Illinois, on Saturday, April 10, 2010, with activities throughout the weekend. The international conference will provide education and outreach to families, employers/employees, and scientists throughout the world as part of ADAO’s continuing effort to educate the public about the dangers of asbestos, ban its use, and encourage research efforts to improve treatment options.

The mission of this conference is "Call to Action to Prevent, Detect and Treat Asbestos-Related Diseases".

Multimodality Treatment - It has shown encouraging results in some patients. With this method, two or more treatment options are completed at the same time, often involving the combination of surgery, chemotherapy and sometimes radiotherapy. However, this mesothelioma treatment method can only be used for a small percentage of patients that have a chance to beat the cancer.

Palliative Treatment - This usually involve some form of chemotherapy and are aimed to improve the overall quality of life for the patient. Chemotherapy drugs for peritoneal patients have included but are not limited to cisplatin, doxorubicin, carboplatin and pemetrexed (Alimta). In some cases, such medications have been noted to stall the progression of mesothelioma tumors.

Four-Gene Expression Ratio Test for Survival in Patients Undergoing Surgery for Mesothelioma

Researchers from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital completed a study of a four-gene expression ratio test that potentially predict the survival in cancer patients diagnosed with Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma.

The researcher team tested the four-gene expression ratio test on 120 malignant pleural mesothelioma patients. Participants had to agree to undergo aggressive surgery and the study excluded patients unwilling to do so. Multiple samples from the patient’s tumors were gathered during surgery or through pleural biopsy. Researchers evaluated the test on the collected samples, using two separate micro array platforms (large gene samples) and two different biopsy procedures.

After adjusting for other clinical factors, the test was able to forecast survival for the mesothelioma patients. Once gene-ratio test results were combined with known mesothelioma prognosis information, patients could be separated into high-risk and low-risk groups. High-risk patients yielded a median survival rate of 6.9 months. The low-risk group median survival rate reported 31.9 months.

The results of the tests could allow patients to better understand their treatment options. Mesothelioma patients whose tests suggested poor outcomes and are not prime candidates for surgery could be persuaded towards other supportive treatments. Patients with better test results may be more apt to select surgical treatments and may gain a psychological edge from the results.

Difficulty falling asleep was a significant predictor of suicidal thoughts and planning. Compared with people who reported no insomnia complaints, those who had trouble initiating sleep had 1.9 times the risk of suicidal ideas and 2.2 times the risk of planning suicide.

The results were adjusted for several factors known to influence suicide, including substance abuse, depression, anxiety disorder and other mood disorders, as well as chronic medical conditions such as stroke, heart disease, lung disease and cancer. They were also adjusted for the influence of sociodemographic factors such as age, gender, and marital and financial status.

Cush, principal investigator of the study. “These conventional medications are widely used, but have not been shown to alter the natural history of the disease. In some cases, overuse may contribute to significant gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, hematologic, renal and liver toxicity.”

Haining Yang, M.D., a young female scientist specializes in the cancer research has been awarded for the asbestos and mesothelioma research. She was selected among fifty nine total applicants for asbestos related research grant and has been awarded grants total of $220,000 for her research on the asbestos and mesothelioma cancer. Asbestos Fibers: Trigger Cancer in Human Cells

Ohio State University scientists believe they are the first in the world to study the molecular underpinnings of cancer by probing individual bonds between an asbestos fiber and human cells.

Though any clinical application is years away, the researchers hope their findings could aid in drug development efforts targeting illnesses caused by excessive exposure to asbestos, including the deadly cancer called mesothelioma. The researchers use atomic force microscopy to observe how a single asbestos fiber binds with a specific receptor protein on cell surfaces. They suspect that at least one of the more lethal forms of asbestos triggers a cascade of events inside cells that eventually lead to illness, sometimes decades later.

The conditions most commonly associated with long-term exposure to airborne asbestos are lung cancer; asbestosis, a chronic respiratory disease; and mesothelioma, a cancer that forms in the membrane lining most internal organs of the body, including the lungs.

Australia Initiated Safety Action Plan against Mesothelioma

Considering society and people's health, a safety action plan is initiated by the Minister for Australia's State Industrial Relations in order to prevent the mesothelioma and asbestos related diseases. This plan provides necessary guidance and training materials to the workers and tradesmen especially those who working in the industries like building companies, construction companies, etc.

Paul Caica, Minister of Industrial Relations, held the launch at a service during the Asbestos Victims Memorial Day. Mr. Caica stated the plan would incorporate five strategic initiatives focusing on many aspects of society:

Due to a large rate of asbestos use in mining, Australia has one of the highest rates of mesothelioma in the world.
