Supporting Boys in Early Childhood Education

Yesterday I received an email from Katie. (Thank you!)

It really got me thinking again about how we can support boys in Waldorf Kindergartens and in our homes. Boys ARE so different to girls, aren't they! Having one of both has been so eye opening for me, even after YEARS of boy-top heavy classes in my kindergartens.

Why was that?? Something about MY energy

(taurus bull/chinese year ox/ choleric/ metabolic sense for those of you who are interested!!)

being better suited to boys??

When I taught, every little space in the room was FILLED to the brim with busy, creative, constructive children: mostly, the boys in the middle spreading out, and the girls in the corner pockets of the room.

They would WORK and WORK to build their projects.

Picture a bee hive, with workers going about their business independently of each other but knowing their tasks. That was the Kindergarten.

A few years back, I was part of a project looking into boys in education.

Boys in general (in schools of all kinds) do tend to be more full of energy - needing physical activity, more challenged to sit in a chair for long periods, needing to play rough and tumble etc, and superheroes!

So many superheroes!

Rather than try to hide that, or water it down, we need to embrace it and make education FIT the boy, rather than the Boy fit the Education.

I wrote to Katie,

"I like the idea of 'enobling' the challenging themes of play. By that, I mean to take say, 'superhero' play, and transform it somehow, to take the essence of what they are doing (eg showing courage, bravery, strength etc) and helping them to channel that into purposeful tasks (somehow) without them thinking that WE think 'superman' or 'spiderman' is wrong.

There is NO wrong.

It is what surrounds us everyday so of course they will imitate it. It calls on us to think creatively, that is for sure, as their desire to be superman or batman or spiderman or buzz lightyear is SO strong!!

For me, my biggest challenge is how I can sever the cords of consumerism (and the associated images of the superheroes) from them when it is everywhere- even on yogurt pots! "

One story I love to share is of a time when my class was filled with 18 boys and just 9 girls.

In desperation to make my inside play opportunity meaningful and constructive, (rather than just a rehash of the tv program they watched that morning), I brought in my old futon bed frame with about 20 long lengths of timber slats.

The children, especially the boys who became Fingerknitting Kings, fingerknitted and fingerweaved and knitted "with Nancy" until there was a basket overflowing with 'ropes'.

The 'builders' then set to work, making houses and highrises (our local beach is lined with hundreds of highrises) and window cleaning swing things and cubby houses and roadworks.

My only interventions into these weeks of self directed play was to remind them that the 'Health and Safety" Officer would be visiting so they must build safely and keep all 'demolitions' within their safety boundaries (notified by chair barracades and 'notices' hung by the children) so passerbys would not be hurt.

They created roles for their teams, named each other with their role for the day (eg man in charge, safety officer etc) and generally worked together as a team of builders would on site.

Later, one dad came to visit and build a teepee in the garden. These builders were delighted with the 'real work' after so much preparation!

It was fair to say that not a lot of 'playing' happened within the structures. The building was, for them, real work and they didnt have time to then 'play' inside but occasionally they would invite the girls and boys into the spaces to make their homes, or kitchen.

Now, I have my own boy, I am even more keen to ensure ways to help him feel validated and worthy through real work in the world.

Celebrating Easter with thoughtful, non commercial ideas

On Wednesday night, my friend Sandra Frain hosted her Easter parent education evening. She prepared a dinner (this was her kind treat to her parents in her group) of delicious pumpkin mash, boiled eggs, roasted sunflower seeds in tamari, their own pumpkin seeds from their garden toasted, homemade pesto, aioli (mayonnaise) made by her 18 year old daughter, freshly made cream cheese with a sundried tomato topping, a juicy salad filled with chickory and herbs from the garden AND sourdough bread, baked in the shape of a cross with 7 bread roses. It was a feast for the eyes, as much as for the belly!

Sandra shared that for her, growing up as a child in Canada, Easter was a non existant celebration (due to her family's belief systems), but that she always felt something was missing. She came to the IDEA of "easter" (and what this meant for her) more consciously as an adult and supported us, that we too should find our own relationship to Easter. This is freedom. But, Sandra did point out, Easter IS all around us, so whether an individual (and family) chooses to participate in the more commercial idea of Easter (eg chocolate galore, easter egg hunts, who gets the most... etc idea) or finds something that is a better fit for them, it is important to acknowledge that "something" is happening in many places across the world. To ignore it is folly, and may just serve to alienate people from their local and greater community. I liked this idea.

Sandra shared some of her ideas with us, in particular the idea of the Easter Hare (rather than the easter bunny) as the chosen delivery 'guy' as his whole being is that of someone who makes sacrifices and who is clear minded in his intentions. The hare is an animal who will put himself in harms way to save a mate. This is one of the key ideas of Easter- that we, as human individuals, are able to put others (and their needs) first, even when it is extremely difficult; in the most extreme case- giving up life so others could continue to have freedom and redemption.

We also spoke about the challenge of Easter in the Southern hemisphere being in the Autumn season.

I dont have a problem with Easter being in Autumn at all. It is all I have ever known, yet the colours of autumn (the golden, orange and reddish hues) actually speak to me of a time of internal contemplation, and surely this too is a theme of Easter. As much as the greens, and lemon yellows and pinks signify Spring, and all the new life that comes. I also like that the Autumn Gold- that golden melt-in-your-mouth colour of butter- reminds me of the yolk inside an egg. New life waiting to burst forth. And this clearly speaks of this time of the year too.

We travelled a little, but not insignificant, journey throughout the rooms and corridors of Sandra's home and imagined the themes of the week leading up the Easter (and the death of Jesus Christ). This small acting out of some of the key virtues of this time ( a mini-play if you like) is helping to make this time resonate more deeply within me. As someone who also grew up without much understanding of the yearly themes, I too have had to find my own way into meaning and symbolism.

Finally, Sandra taught us the technique of Pysanka egg decorating (a type of wax batik) and we took turns dipping our blown/hard boiled eggs into pots of dye, whilst chatting about the meaning of Easter for all of us, and eating Sandra's delicious-nutritious-wobbleishious lavendar icecream.
(I must go on and on about this icecream!! Out of this world!! I can't eat commercial icecream ever again!!)

We also learned a way to decorate eggs with coloured tissue paper.

In a few weeks, I look forward to my own Easter Celebration with Moondew families with refreshed eyes and heart.

Yesterday, I drove an hour to visit my friend Sandra for her Easter parent education night. What a blessing, to both be in her company with a whole bunch of lovely women and to share in her thoughts and knowledge.

I'm much too tired to blog about it today and give what she shared true credit, as little Ned has been battered by the blowing winds of Autumn today and has a little croupy cough and asthma, but tomorrow I promise to share properly!

How to make floating Ice boats

A little while ago, one hot late summer day, we floated ice boats with the children.

First, I cut out some triangle shapes out of heavy duty scrapbooking paper in pretty designs

Then I took all of Ned's baby tupperware containers, placed a small circle of blu-tack in the centre of them, added a skewer stick (half of one in each, the pointy bit cut off) and water, then froze them overnight.

The first time, I added a bit of food colouring to make them stand out when they were floating.

But BAD Idea!! Of course, the children later wanted to eat the ice 'block'.

(Lesson learned: Fridays group ice boats were just plain water,

then it didnt matter if they did eat them after all!)

We filled up an old baby bath with COLD water. The colder the better. Add as much ice as you can, and let it melt to reduce water temperature before you set the boats free.

This helps the iceboats to last longer!

The children and mums added a 'flag' to their boats and watched them set sail.

The tupperware containers made good boats too!

And after all that fun, iceboat iceblocks helped keep us all cool!!

It is the Australian Association for Rudolf Steiner Early Childhood Education newsletter and is jammed packed!

This newsletter (looks like a 40 page magazine) is filled with articles, crafts, poems, songs, stories, morning circles, event listings, Workshop articles and recipes and is perfect for Steiner Waldorf teachers, parents, playgroup mums and dads- in fact, anyone who is striving to be creative in their parenting approach and wishes imagination and creativity to be fostered in their children.

In the newsletter this season, there is the lovely Mushroom House pattern by Nikki Fletcher and Mia Faulks and full instructions. Wow!

They tell me they'll soon have a kit available for sale to the general public. Go girls!

Artist Profile: Dionne Coburn

Dionne is a friend of mine, and, with her daughter Zahri, one of my Tuesday Moondew Tribe. She continually amazes me (and everyone in our group) with her creative endeavours. Her most recent 'sewing kit' extravaganza was met with gasps when she showed it to other mums. Dionne recently ran a workshop to teach others how to make these, and today, in fact, was teaching ladies to make her little easter bilby.

(I really wanted to go but had my 20th school reunion to organise!)

Dionne has unlimited talents but is a little shy in sharing them so I will share them for her! I love to see when people begin to unfold and unfurl their creativity. They truly begin to truly shine even brighter!

What is your creative outlet?

At this point in my life my work really revolves around the beautiful possibilities presented by natural fibres such as wool and silk. My work, for now, seems to be mostly channeled into two streams: creating something beautiful for my children (or that of family or friends); and creating something beautiful for myself (although these are the things that usually don’t get finished!). Oh, and I just love taking the time to introduce some fine details, usually in the form of beading, embroidery, etc

What is the one essential thing you demand for making your art?

Well most of my creative fervor tends to happen in the evening after the little people have gone to sleep (needles, beads, threads, and any form of concentration just don’t mix with little people!). I am blessed with a very supportive partner who does what he can to allow me the odd time outside child-free hours

What is your fave season, and why?

It would have to be the spring… is that a cliché? It brings forth such a marvelous breath of colour and life! The welcome warmth combined with a residual cool breeze from the parting winter just draws you outside. I just couldn’t go on if I couldn’t be out connecting with nature!!
What is your fave colour?

Well my answer to this one will be completely predictable for anyone who knows me… PURPLE… all shades and nuances! I am naturally drawn to a palette of colours which (for me) reflect the two places I love the most – the ocean and the forest. Blue to green to blue to purple…. I am in heaven!

What is your fave chocolate bar and why?

My unbelievable sweet-tooth was not a happy camper in my mostly sugar-free childhood home! There was a time where I would happily consume far more chocolate in one sitting than was reasonable. Thankfully now-a-days I tend to go for the single-mouthful of intensity and satisfaction found in a dark chocolate Lindt Lindor Ball… ahhhhhh, bliss!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is your fave time of day and why?

Really it would have to be any time of the day that involves that over-whelming and soul-deep feeling of content. I guess this usually is in the form of “Oh, I love my gorgeous kids!”, “Oh, I love my amazing husband!”, “Oh, I love my beautiful friends!” and/or “Oh, I adore this awesome community!” It is just so easy to let these gifts whisper away from our consciousness moment to moment. When I find myself able to stop and embrace them… this is absolutely my favourite time of day!

Sweet or savoury? Why, and what do you like to eat?

Well I would have to refer to my prior response regarding chocolate. Although the desire is not as intense as it once was, sweet will probably always win the day! Lucky for me my hubby is an amazing cook and I am lucky enough to be well fed with a variety of culinary delights!

Fave thing to do in the whole wide world?

Well I am probably a little dull in saying spending ‘quality’ time with my children… you know those moments when that feeling of love and content rises like a huge bubble from your chest into the back of your throat?

Fave book at the minute?

Although most of my reading usually involves some form of easy-read fiction (I guess I treat it as some brain/emotional ‘down-time’), a treasured friend gave me a copy of “Buddism for Mothers” for my last birthday – so much to absorb… so much to learn… so much to apply to life!

3 things we don't know about you!

Well given that most of those who will read this probably don’t know me at all than I could pretty much mention anything! Nevertheless I shall try to pick three things that are a little interesting…

1. In my previous life (ie. prior to the life-shifting journey into motherhood) I was a national park ranger, a job I loved, worked very hard to get and frequently miss a great deal! I was privileged enough to have worked in some beautiful natural and historic places, had some amazing and unique experiences and shared the journey with some fantastic and dedicated people. Whether this will become part of my life again in the future… I really don’t know. In some form, I hope so!

2. My favorite animals are bats, they are remarkable creatures that are given far too much of a bad rap I think. They are so intelligent and some are just too cute for words!

3. I have been blessed with the unparalleled privilege of being looked right in the eye by a wild humpback whale (within touching distance!)… I get goosebumps just thinking about it… I swear that this incredible creature looked into the depths of my soul!

Goals for the next 10 years....

Wow, this is a big one! I would honestly have to say that I couldn’t possibly plan that far ahead… it really is day to day around here most of the time! If I can manage to get the children’s bags and lunches packed and ready the night before a school day I feel a real sense of achievement! OK, so it isn’t quite that chaotic, but still at this stage of my life my goals really revolve around continuing to strive to be a better mother, partner and friend, along with getting to know myself a little better through creative and spiritual exploration.

Autumn Nature Table Display (Waldorf)

This week marked the beginning of Autumn here in Australia.

Temperatures have cooled ( I have even put on a cardigan on a few mornings) and I find myself looking forward to putting on my fave boots again.

The story this fortnight is all about an extraordinary apple so it is only fitting that my table features an Apple Munchkin doll (isnt she the cutest??) and Autumn's first mushroom.

We have seen our first 3 mushrooms popping up in the garden too!

Over the coming weeks and months, I hope children (and parents!) will bring their own autumn finds and display them here.

"CrEATe" by The Future Laboratory and published by Gestalten

I picked up this book in the library last week. Did I mention I love libraries??

I used to spend hours in the library, in short bursts, to collect random books from every aisle. I am no book snob. I'll take anything as long as I can learn!

But Ned has decided he is not into Mama browsing at all. I found this book on one of my rare Ned-free outings!

( I now have to search on line and put books on hold. Nowhere near as satisfactory as browsing the spines and choosing books based on the picture/colours/words on the front cover!)

Anyway, I picked this up as it was called "CREATE" and of course, that being my key word in life, I had to have it. Only later did I see it actually said, crEATe but as I love food as a past time too, it was still perfect!

The subtitle of the book is Eating, Design and Future Food.

I found so many great things in here!

Firstly, London based designer Alexandre Bettler (with Marie Jean Lund) created the Bread Faces project in 2007. The project was designed to get people making a portrait of themselves using jam, peant butter and marmelade. For some quirky reason (accessibility to art for everyone perhaps!) I love this!

And packaging and design ideas were abundant.

Stanley Honey packages their honey in clay plant pots so that, once empty, they can be filled with a living flower to "encourage more honey making in the future."

Thirdperson designed a range of heat resistant cardboard sleeves (love these knitting ones! how cosy!) to slip into existing cups for the Nusa kitchen range of winter soups.

I couldn't resist 'Fat Pig' chocolate by the Brooklyn Brothers in NY!

A little nasty perhaps but still caught my eye!

RAW. Natural packaging always appeals.

This bubblegum guy (10 flavours) calls for a home. Remove his 'clothes' (outer box) to see his skeleton!

Chocolate 'pencils' - Yum! No waste here!

Diners "use the sharpener to grate the chocolate shavings onto their desserts" at a Japanese patisserie.

And I never knew you could do so much with Caramel and toffee!

If you are interested, they then gave a pretty interesting breakdown of food 'typologies'

Who eats what and why!

Types include Zeno Youth, Extreme Connoisseurs, Food Thrifts, Armchair explorers (think Masterchef!), Ethical Eaters and Cultural chaser. This was eye opening stuff!

I couldn't resist, so I bought one for a blog friend too!

Don't you love the packaging!

Yes, every apple is wrapped and cared for like this. In fact, most of the fruits and vegetables are treated like royalty. I love the Japanese sentiment.

To make the apple sit fully open,

you just use the paperclip provided to fasten the back page to the front page.

Each apple slice is a piece of notepaper, just right for you!

Oh, if only everything in life could be so beautifully presented!

There are a few graphic artists out there whose work I truly love and whose skill I covet. They just 'get me'.

Jill, of Jilly P Graphics, meets my sensibility. I love the child-friendly whimsy in her work. I LOVE IT!

I have spotted Jill's work in the Paperchase at Robina. Yeah!

It is always a treat to visit her blog and see what she is up to. The recent New York photos were heaven and what about those 'puddings' at Bills! It has been a long time since I lived in England (Henrietta's father is English) but there are still aspects of English life that I miss. How to use the GOCCO machine

This is a GOCCO machine. It is a home screenprinter that hails from Japan.

For the past few years, there has been a resurgence in Gocco printing and people are doing amazing things with it.

I love screenprinting, and have my own screen, but it sits in the shed because the process is so time consuming and messy.

That is why I love the Gocco. So quick, easy and with hardly any mess.

Gocco can be used for anything- I have printed paper bags, invitations, bunting flag, and cards.

Here is a quick photo tutorial on how to use it as if you are lucky enough to find one, the instructions are all in Japanese and it is easy to miss a crucial step. Here goes...

First, you need your design. This is Ned's 2nd birthday party invite.

(I have blocked out my address with a strip of paper for the photo. Ignore this!)

I used a word doc to create the type and font, then added a hand drawn truck for his motif.

Once your design is drawn, you need to photocopy it.

The picture you use needs to have TONER in it for the screen printing to work.

First, in your Gocco box, find the blue screen.

Open up the lid and secure the blue screen in the plastic clips.

This prevents smudging and a messy blob filled screen appearing. It is so important for a clear finish.

On the sticky spongey mat, place a piece of scrap paper. I use my template sheet.

This prevents accidental ink from escaping onto your machine.

Cut out your final design from the photocopy and place it, face up, onto the paper sheet.

This is the Hi-Mesh screen. The bright lights burn the picture image onto this screen, which you then use to print lots and lots of prints onto your fave things. You can see it is see-through.

Place this, with the arrow on your side, into the machine. Click it into the top and bottom slits first, then slide it towards the arrow. The right hand side then slot into place.

When you close the machine, be sure that your design is centred.

How it looks to you now, is what your final print will look like. Make sure it isnt on the wobble!

Adjust the photocopy picture as necessary.

Now, for the lamp.

Take two new bulbs and screw them into the light holder.

The light holder has silver connection plates. These must face towards you and be able to match the silver plates inside the slot on the main machine. When these connect properly, you'll see a flash to indicate that the screen has been burned for you.

Place the light holder into the slot carefully.

Use both hands (I can only use one for photographic shot!), one on either side, and gently but firmly PRESS DOWN until you see and hear a flash of light. Your screen should now be done.

The photocopy is now adhered to the window.

Gently peel the original off the screen.

You will find that the screen now has an imprint of your work and design.

To prepare the screen for printing, you can use this sticky mat to separate areas of your design so you can use different colours. Just cut thinly, then peel off sticky label . Lift the clear cover on the screen and attach sticky mat to your screen as necessary. Be sure to isolate areas of colour, using the sticky mat right up to the borders of another colour and also to the edge of the screen. This prevents colour bleeding.

Don't let the sticky mat touch or hide any of your design when you place it or parts of your work will be hidden.

(This design is all black, on yellow card, so I have removed the sticky mat as it is not needed)

Use the colour tubes of paint and colour in the areas of your design.

You may have used 2 or 3 or 4 colours even. Just add your colours where they are supposed to go. Remember to use sticky mat to separate colours successfully.

When your screen is prepared and loaded with paint, place it back into the plastic clips

(You should be able to see the arrow. This is now facing the right way. )

Place your item to be printed on the paper. Mine is yellow cardboard cut to size.

Use both hands to press down and make screen imprint. The ink will spread and hopefully, cover your design.

Peel back the print and stack in the drying rack.

Check your finished design. If there are any parts of the design that are faded or missing, take it out of machine and add a little more paint. Use the spatula to spread the paint evenly and to pull excess paint from the edge to the centre again so it doesnt go to waste.

I was lucky enough to have some Japanese friends who found me the gorgeous GOCCO on Japanese ebay equivalent. It cost me $200 all up, including postage $70 and has everything one could want and more.. (extra paint etc). A new one, when you could buy them, cost about 16000 Yen ($180 approx).

Now, I just have to find more replacement screens and bulbs which I have heard is easy to do.

Anyone know where to buy them in Australia????

Hand Felted Story Mat workshop with Amber, Feb 25 2010

Six lovely ladies came to create their own work of art last Thursday night. It was 'story mat' time.

The lounge room was soon filled with vibrant colour, conversation (the conversations were so animated, we almost forgot to work and create!) and good will. Add a great dose of enthusiasm and what a night we had!

Kyla and Mari caught up on old times.

Minako captured rainbows.

Dannielle and Sarah shared their India tales.

(Oh what fun. 3 girls in India for 16 days. No children. Just adventure! Sounded like an amazing trip!)

And Jacqui shared stories of her twin boys.

I made tea, and supported their creative process.

Dannielle's tree trunk was literally a work of art. The trunk was painted in hues of browns and oranges.

The little yellow pocket was just right for a little nest for a bird.

Jacqui perfected her bridge and pocket techniques.

The little bridge on the yellow brick road was gorgeous.

Minako made an apple tree, complete with 3 apples with their own hidden pockets.

Mari's tree and mushroom house was a big hit with the girls!

And Sarah's cave, tree and mushrooms will be just right to hide the little needlefelted eggs she has planned.

I'd love to see the children's eyes come easter morning when they spot this game.

I love to see what lies inside the minds of creative women.

Everyone brings something so different, and individual.

There are two more Story Mat workshops coming up soon.

Artist Profile: Toni Brockliss

One of my favourite blogs is My Little Suitcase with Toni Brockliss.
I am honoured to share her Artist Profile here today. Toni always has something lovely to say, and the pics on her blog (both her own, and ones she showcases) often inspire my new creative thought. Love that!
So, here is to happy reading... and don't forget to pop on over and say hi to Toni yourself!

What is your creative outlet?I love to do all craft. I always say I try them all and do none very well. If I had to name a favourite, it would have to be anything Lorraine and I (my beloved sewing machine) make together.

What is the one essential thing you demand for making your art?

I am very fortunate to have my nights to myself – meaning my children are asleep in bed and Ben loves his computer games, so we sit together in a room we made for two. I am at my craft table, Ben is at his computer table. We are together, but also doing things we love. You do need time to craft, but if you find it hard to find a large block of it, it can be found. Crocheting in the passenger seat of the car, filling in time with an embroidery hoop waiting for the doctor, knitting waiting for the kids to come out of school.......

What is your fave season, and why?

I am a winter girl. I love everything about it. I love the silence and the rain, the way the green in our garden stands out on the grey days. I love drives and feeling warm when everything else is cold. I think the clothes are special because I love layering and scarves are my staple outfit. Also good for covering up little grubby fingerprints. J

What is your fave colour?

My favourite colour is Tiffany Blue. Not quite blue and not quite green.
What is your fave chocolate bar and why?

I love dark chocolate, so anything dark – like Old Gold.

What is your fave time of day, and why?

My favourite time of the day is early morning. It’s so quiet and you don’t know what is ahead of you yet. It’s new.

Sweet or Savoury? Why, and what do you like to eat?

I am sweet. I love baking and I think desserts and treats are so beautiful. All those colours and the way they are put together – it’s art to me. My favourite treats are macarons from the Lindt cafe. They are the best things I have ever tasted. Ever!

Fave thing to do in the whole wide world?

Our favourite thing to do is to take a drive up the hill (we live in the Dandenong Ranges) to Olinda and walk along the little streets looking at the shops. We then stop at the Pie In The Sky Cafe and have lunch. It’s our happy place.

Fave book at the minute?

The Time Travellers Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. I just adored this book and couldn’t stop thinking about it. I have not seen the movie, because I don’t want to ruin the book!

3 things we don't know about you!

I don’t like celery. Ben used to put it in his Pea Soup and I didn’t have the heart to tell him. He caught me fishing it out, so the secret was out.

I hate dancing. I will dance in front of Ben and the kids – daggy dancing, but if I go out, there is no way you will catch me dancing. I just feel so awkward.

If I see a man degrading a woman in public, I always come to the woman’s defence. I went out once with a couple I barely knew (I was in town for a holiday and they were friends of friends) and the guy was so rude to the girl. I had a go at him and he left me stranded in the middle of nowhere. The sad part was the girl went with him.

Goals for the next 10 years....

I get scared making large goals. I always feel if I make them I will jinx myself or something silly like that. Ben and I would like to live in Paris....but that could be longer then a 10 year goal!

I like little goals. We write a list of yearly goals and then break them down. Our goals this year were to find a babysitter, drive around Tasmania and make it to Perth for Christmas to see our family. We also have a goal to help guide our son through his first year at Kindy and his program at Irabina. Elton is Autistic and he is doing so well. We are really proud of him.

"Nature Tables" for Boys

A nature or natural display table can be used for many things, and creating a scene, somewhat like a diorama, is one useful way to inspire play and create a visual picture for children who can then use this as fodder for their play.

Othertimes, nature tables are places for children to bring their vision of what is happening in their own world- a place for their treasures to sit and be admired (and sometimes played with, depending on the situation and adult/child goals)

At almost two years old, Ned is not quite ready to be bringing treasures to the table, and many of my Moondew friends are small too, so I take the Nature table into my own hands.

This is somewhat fun (oh, to make something out of my own creativity for the children) and somewhat challenging (but, what about the children's ideas?? ).

One thing it does give me is the ability to bring something a little different than what I have traditionally displayed and shared on the table.

This week is a Truck theme. I know boys like trucks. In fact, that is about the only thing Ned is truly fascinated with. "BIG truck" is the first thing he says upon waking, and he carries his favourite truck book everywhere! So, trucks it is. I am also sharing a truck story circle with Moondew friends this fortnight, so this is perfect for them all.

Many times, one hears that Waldorf/Steiner early childhood education suits girls but parents are not sure if it is right for the boys. Where is the sport? Where is the rough and tumble play? It is too pretty for boys.

Which is probably something to do with the overabundance of pretty pinks in the space, and the lack of 'boy' toys in some settings. I can see how the misinterpretation can occur.

I think it is important to bring a balance.

The majority of Waldorf early childhood teachers are female, (there is always one or two odd fellows at conferences of 200 women. Brave men, those ones!) and they do a wonderful job providing boys (and girls) with real life work like hammering, sawing, sanding, building, making tool boxes and more. They plan for real life activity- like stomping, tumbling, running, climbing trees, races, big muscle work of carrying huge logs and providing equipment so they can build houses, bridges and forts.

Many teachers, including myself!, rely upon their own husbands and fathers, dads of the children, and friends of Kindergarten to bring in that all important 'male' role model and this works well too.

But, I have NEVER seen a nature table or toy presentation that was truly 'boy' in its nature.

(and honestly, looking back, I never truly made one myself either)

I like to think that there are archetypes that boys aspire to- the warrior energy, the courage of a knight, the heart of a king, the speed of a tiger, the fearlessness of a man in battle, the power of working and being in control of a machine. Of course, girls also aspire to these characteristics, just as boys care for the baby dolls and like to cook in home corner, but there is a passion and a desire in boys to truly act on these impulses and character traits.

It is something I'd like to explore further.

How to Blanket Stitch

Blanket stitch is one of the best things I know!

Here is how you do it.

Firstly, take a length of thread about as long as your arm.

Thread it through your needle, and tie a knot at the end of the long thread.

(With children, I do a double thread and knot the two ends together as this keeps their thread alive and working. It is too frustrating and will encourage them to give up their sewing adventures if their thread keeps slipping out.)

Take your piece of material/felt. Start at the back and go through to the front of the material. The loose end will hang out.

(Later, you can thread this dangling bit onto a needle and take it back into the felt and out in some random place. This keeps your work nice and neat.)

If you are sewing something together, start the first stitch by threading through only the top layer, and letting the loose bit hang in between the two pieces. It will be hidden once you begin sewing.

I always tell people, in blanket stitch, we must remember that the first and last stitches are two jumps on the one spot!

Come up again, in the same spot.

This stops your first stitch being on a diagonal across the front of the material.

Now for the little verse that is used in most Steiner/ Waldorf schools I know.

(I also have many of my own versions)

1. In through the bunny hole

2. Around the log

Take your thread (either the bit closest to the needle or the long bit- doesnt matter) and go 'around' the needle.

Now pull the thread up until it locks.

3. Up through the bunny hole and off jumps the frog!

(Yeah, I know. Frog? Where did that come from?

But children and adults remember it and this helps them to remember the actions)

Now you have your first completed stitch.

Now repeat steps 1 to 3, just taking a little jump to the right as the new place for the first step.

And off jumps the frog!

Sometimes, we forget to 'wrap' the needle. I always tell the children to quickly 'catch' the rabbit by the tail and pull him back. He is our house bunny and we can't have him running away.

(Where I live, bunnies have taken over so the law says we can't keep one but over the border half an hour away, you can have one for a pet. Bizarre!)

This is my left handed version of 'pulling him back'!

Then 'wrap' him again.

The children learn to fix their mistakes, which makes them so much more independent and able to work on their own projects without needing an adult's assistance.

We need to help children become independent with lots of tasks. THIS is our role as parents. Not to do it for them, but to help them find their way into a task until they master it.

Creative thinking can make ANY task child-friendly.

For spacing, the biggest jump should be about 5mm wide.

This is about half a female adult's finger, or the size of one of a young (4-6 year old) child's fingers.

Using the body as a measuring approximation tool is another old school idea that really works.

When I come to points or tips on a piece of material, it is important to ensure that one stitch sits right on the tip/point. This creates a balanced finish for your work.

When I come to a thread end, I leave it hanging and when I finish the work, I go back, re-thread it onto a needle and pass the small piece of thread into my work in a random place and out again. I then cut off the thread from this random spot. No untidy threads left here!

To start a new thread, I start with the same 'two jumps on one spot', right on top of the knot of the last stitch.

A sneak peek inside our local Waldorf Kindergarten "Fingerprints"

One of my favourite places on the Gold Coast is the lovely Fingerprints Steiner Childcare Centre. My friends Bek and Adam (supported by their staff) have done a marvellous job in creating this centre. There really is nothing else like it in our local region.

Children, and families, are truly welcome here and the families know it!

I would love to share some pictures of what the inside space looks like, sans children. Time and time again, the parents comment "Oh, I wish I had been to a kindergarten like this". The best feedback for the staff who work here is the fact that the children, and families, never want to leave!!

These girls are my colleagues and friends- Bek (owner), Amanda (group leader), Tania (group leader) and Merridee (more-than-an-assistant!), and our old friend, Christine too! I love spending time with these girls who really value and love the journey of early childhood and who give their all to the children in their care.

And I must say I am super impressed with the efforts of Bek and her husband Adam and their children (especially Reece who, at 18, has more than done his fair share!).

They have not spared any expense, or labour, or love, in creating a space where children truly are at the centre of the equation. Not only in their setting up of the space, with quality timber furniture, handmade toys, style, gardening efforts and more, but also in the daily care of the children, their programming, their knowledge of the developmental stages of consciousness and their efforts to recognise the gifts of every individual who passes through the doors.

Oh, to be a child immersed in song, play, craft, art, story and more.....

It is really worth a visit!

Artist Profile: Jennifer McCormack

The 2010 Artist Profile series begins with a profile on one of my best friends, Jen McCormack. She is a sage, who spends time contemplating everything before a wise answer appears. She is a talented friend to many, and all these friends love her!

Above all else, she is an artist- in the way she lives life. It appears in her work, in her mothering, in her relationships and in her home. She is a mother of 2 (soon to be 3) and I treasure her capacity for always striving to create, and to find balance. (Even though she'd probably say that she struggles to find balance, she lives it!)

Enjoy learning about this wonderful woman.

1. What is your creative outlet?

Anything that keeps my hands busy - knitting, felting, drawing, writing, blogging, sewing. I have a hard time settling on one type of creative pursuit and have many different projects on the go at once.

2. What is the one essential thing you demand for making your art?

I don't demand anything - my family understand that my art is a part of my day. My children are free to come and go - or join in if they wish ... but generally they don't and are good at finding their own things to do. My husband also has his projects going and I think that seeing their parents involved in making beautiful things has helped their own creativity. They are never bored. I LIKE the time alone in the morning, but I have to get up at 3am in order to be alone in this house!

3. What is your fave season, and why?

Autumn because I don't like being too hot or too cold. Autumn is a beautiful time of year in Queensland and it is so subtle! You have to look carefully to know it is autumn because not all of our trees change colours, but you will see differences in animal activity and flowering plants. But in Queensland even most flowering plants like to hang on to the idea of summer for a few extra months ...

4. What is your fave colour?

Right now it is brown shades ... which really surprises me because my gut reaction to this question is to answer 'Purple!' (Isn't that everyone's favourite colour?) But i guess I'm feeling earthy right now.

5. What is your fave chocolate bar and why?

Chocolate bars are not a big part of my life so no favourites here. I DO like chocolate though! Preferably in cake form ...

6. What is your fave time of day and why?

3am when I am alone in the silence and listening to the sounds of soft breathing from my family - and bursting with ideas that must be given form, but can CHOOSE whether I take action or take the opportunity to drink in the quiet and just sit for a while. It is a rare and cherished opportunity.

7. Sweet or Savoury? Why, and what do you like to eat?

Savoury - comfort foods! I love rich, filling food.

8. Fave thing to do in the whole wide world?

I haven't seen the whole wide world, but even still my favourite thing is to enjoy a good cup of tea. So yay for me I get to do this several times a day.

9. Fave book at the minute?

The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton - a book that tells stories about tellings stories. About finding one's own story of belonging and unravelling mystery. Just beautiful.

To continue as I'm going - being a mum who supports her family the best I can by not being too hard on myself, by renewing my well of creativity, by appreciating the beautiful gifts in my life (in whatever form that may be) and by accepting what comes my way as another opportunity for growth. Actually earning a living from my creativity would be nice too!

I love Japanese zakka.

Years ago, when I visited Japan, I came home with suitcases full of
cute, useful stuff.

THIS is Zakka.

(One time, the suitcases were so heavy my bill was $800 in over limit fees. A guard took pity on me and they let me pass with the lot for free! Must have been the blonde hair!)

Lately, there has been an explosion in this thing called Japanese Masking tape.

You can use it for all kinds of things.

Wrapping presents, creative labelling, on cards as design- I have even seen a lampshade made out of it!

Mathilda's Market in Brisbane

Gee, I love independent, creative, stylish women who make delightful things!

Yesterday, my mum, Ned and I travelled to Brisbane to the Mathilda's Market . I like this market.

(I also like the name Matilda/Mathilda/Mathilde so much so my old kombi was Matilda the Blue Whale!)

There were so many beautiful products on offer, from children's clothes to lunchboxes, to toys and stationery.

Everyone walked out with at least a couple of bags. That is a good sign that the merchandise was quality, original and affordable. It is also in the historic surrounds of the Brisbane Racing Club and this added a little pizzazz, nostalgia and atmosphere. Next market is on the 17th April. It is worth a visit.

One of My Favourite Things was from TreeParty Design, who were selling these bug cupcake moulds.

I was so excited to find someone selling cute japanese stuff here! Another Favourite Thing!

(I bought something cute and zakka from here for my next giveaway.)

The stall also has an online shop Kawaii for you sells all things Japanese zakka. Kawaii means 'cute' and cute they were!

I went to market searching for someone with truck invitations for Ned's 2nd birthday party.
Everything online is so daggy and dated, and I wanted something stylish and funky.
Details Details, whilst not having a truck design specifially, had so many other boy themes that I'm contemplating changing my preference for the theme!

I heart all of this!

Artist Profile: MamaMoontime

I'm about to commence a series of Artist profiles on my blog. I have a great network of 'artist' friends, both near and far- some of whom blog, and others who don't. They are all so worthy of a bit of attention for what they create but also their artist philosophy on life. Every one of these people celebrates their art in so many different ways. Fibre creations, Drawing, Textiles, Writing, Sewing and more. They are all round good people and I like to celebrate all-round-good-people.

To call oneself an 'artist' is a journey in itself. I have struggled with it. I was more comfortable calling myself the "Creativity Queen", (my old business name until someone in America got the first look in with the website) and even that sounded conceited to me from time to time, yet it still feels like my perfect fit. I dibble. I dabble. And I'm way too A.D.D to be boxed in with one medium. So I mix them. Life, and art, suits me this way.

Anyhow, I'll share my answers first to break the ice and look forward to sharing a profile each week with you over the coming months...

What is your creative outlet? Writing is my art. I love words and can spend all day on the computer with just one cup of tea. But since having Ned, I find sneaky moments. On a practical level for balance in life (and to get out of my head), I find working with fleece a never ending source of amazement at what it is capable of but my fave thing to do is to hand carve stamps. Delightful!
What is the one essential thing you demand for making your art? Moontime! After 8pm is my time. I stay up until at least midnight most nights, and sometimes later, with octopus hands doing different tasks at once.
What is your fave season, and why? Autumn- Nature's abundance is beautiful, the bright bold colours suit my temperament and there is a small chance to rug up and wear my fave boots.
What is your fave colour? Would have to be red. No need to ask why! I'm currently partial to the French look of red,white and blue.
What is your fave chocolate bar and why? Good old Dairy Milk is my boundary and limitation, hoping that if I limit my opportunity, I might have some chance at being saved!
what is your fave time of day and why? Moontime. Peace. Quiet. Creative Energy. Women time. Centredness. The world is my oyster.
sweet or savoury? why, and what do you like to eat? Balance. A bit of both. Brie cheese and quince paste together. Yum.
fave thing to do in the whole wide world? Chat with my children of course, and to write. Writing drives me.
what inspires you? The world. I like to get out there and mingle. I am a nomad, living a non-nomad life for a few years (a major challenge) but the world's calling is getting stronger and stronger. I heart local festivals, eating food from different cultures, and expanding my reality through the stories of others.
fave book at the moment? I just finished a business book about Martha Stewart. She is an inspiration.
3 things we don't know about you:

I wore a kimono and geta (shoes)for 3 years every night for work. I once tripped on my shoes and dropped a agadashi tofu (tofu with strong brown sauce) onto a VIP lady who dined in our tatami mat guest dining room. Horror!
I once held a newly collected Oscar! The oscar belonged to Dean Semler, an Australian cinematographer who won for 'Dances with Wolves'. It made me think, "if he can do it, I can do it". I've yet to do it!!
I went to Kylie Minogue's first concert. (eg locomotion, put your hand on my heart etc....) My enduring fave song of all time is Kylie's 'Shocked'. (yes, I bet you might be shocked!! I love it.

12. Goals for the next 10 years...

Inspire women across the world to find their creative flame and fire it up, through my "Create course", blog, books and articles
Have another healthy baby
Support mothers to build healthy rhythms for their children and enjoy parenting little ones
To continue to create good work (writing, hand work, art)

I have more, but they are little bubbles hiding up in my heart that arent quite ready to pop!

A shell and crab game/song for young children (Playgroup/Preschool) Waldorf inspired.

This is my little friend, the crab. He has been visiting us here the past two weeks and we have sung about him in our morning circle storytime. Click Click Clack, Along the Track. Click Click Clack, Forward and Back.

(This past week, little Ned has spent time everyday saying his "click click clacks" and walking the side by side steps. How deeply things sink in!)

I remember in the weeks before I had Ned, I was teaching a movement and song circle about the ocean, and once again, little crab appears. These were 5 year olds so of course, we had to become little crabs. There I was, belly in the air, down on all fours, clicking and clacking my way across the floor in crab walk.

My assistant Jemma was in fits of laughter, and all I could do was ensure no little ones would get an eyeful!

I always take our friend the crab out of his shell, but quickly hide him away as he is very very shy!

He always seems to find the side of my bra a lovely warm spot! (or maybe I need more pockets on my skirts). He is just made from a little knot of fleece, with a small piece of pipe cleaner twisted through the knot to form his antenna, whilst the fleece is divided into 6 sections (4 feet, 2 claws) and twisted.

Can you see him?? The children can! Simple things leave room for the child to imagine.

We then pass the shell around, and let the children have a listen.

One by one, they have a turn. (Everyone always gets a turn. After a few weeks, they learn to be patient and wait, trusting in this process they have come to rely upon and believe in. Even the little ones.)

When they finish their turn, they go off to wash their hands. You could do the same to send children off to bed, or to brush teeth.

What can they hear? The waves, the boats, mermaids splashing, a pirate looking for treasure....only they can tell.

We sing: "Little shell, little shell, tell me about the ocean.

Tell me the special thing you can hear...."

At first, the little ones are super reluctant to even put it up to their ear, but the second week, they are ready and waiting!

Safe, predictable patterns (through music, song, daily chores...) help the children to grow safely and to trust what they are given.

What a gift!
