1980s exhibition at Schallaburg Castle

Jeder hat ein Lieblings-Jahrzehnt, das einen nachhaltig geprägt hat. Bei mir waren es die 1980er Jahre. Da habe ich Matura (Abitur) gemacht und bin in eine andere Stadt wegen Studium gezogen. Endlich erwachsen und frei. Ich war unglaublich mutig und selbstbewusst. Die 80er waren ein tolles Jahrzehnt und es war uns auch bewusst, dass wir in einer tollen Zeit leben. Die Ausstellung von Erinnerungsstücken und Exponaten ist hervorragend gestaltet und sehenswert für alle, die in dieses Jahrzehnt nochmal eintauchen möchten.

Die Ausstellung findet auf der Schallaburg in Niederösterreich (Nähe St. Pölten) statt. Die Burg ist wunderschön restauriert und höchst sehenswert und daher fange ich mit ein paar Fotos von der Burg an.

Everyone has a favorite decade that has had a lasting impact on them. For me, it was the 1980s. I graduated from high school and moved to another city to study. Finally, I was an adult and free. I was incredibly brave and self-confident. The '80s were a fantastic decade, and we're all aware that we live in a great time. The exhibition of memorabilia and artifacts is superbly designed and well worth seeing for anyone who wants to relive that decade.

The exhibition is located at Schallaburg Castle in Lower Austria (near St. Pölten). The castle has been beautifully restored and is definitely worth a visit, so I'll start with a few photos of it.

Die Burg wurde vor etwa 1000 Jahren errichtet und im 16. Jahrhundert zu einem Renaissanceschloss (Renaissance = Übergang vom Mittelalter zur Neuzeit) umgebaut und so sieht es auch heute noch aus.

The castle was built around 1000 years ago and converted into a Renaissance castle in the 16th century (Renaissance = transition from the Middle Ages to modern times) and that is how it still looks today.

Aber die Burg ist nicht nur innen eindrucksvoll, sondern auch die Außenanlagen bestechen durch wunderschöne Gestaltung und Erhaltung. Die Gärten sind atemberaubend schön.

But the castle is not only impressive inside; the grounds also captivate with their beautiful design and preservation. The gardens are breathtakingly beautiful.

Und nun zur Ausstellung: 80er - Grenzen waren gestern

Music, fashion, art, and politics became playgrounds for new ideas. The 80s were not a quiet decade. They were years of new beginnings. Durch die Scheinwerfer und Beleuchtung in der Ausstellung ist die Qualität der Fotos leider sehr schlecht. Die Stimmung der Besucher war allerdings mehr als gut. Man hörte viele Ahs und Ohs und es wurden viele Geschichten untereinander erzählt. Bei uns war es nicht anders. Mein Mann und ich wurden von unserer Tochter (20) begleitet und wir mussten ihr den Großteil der Gegenstände erklären, weil sie sie noch nie gesehen hat und es sie auch nicht mehr gibt oder in Gebrauch sind.

Verschiedene Artikel für Kinder: ich glaube meine 1. Schultasche war auch orange, Setzkasten, Musical Cats (Premiere Wien 1983), Flöhe (aus Holz) wurden gesammelt und verschenkt, Rubiks Zauberwürfel

Unfortunately, the quality of the photos is very poor due to the spotlights and lighting in the exhibition. However, the atmosphere among the visitors was excellent. There were many "oohs" and "aahs," and lots of stories were being shared. It was the same for us. My husband and I were accompanied by our daughter (20), and we had to explain most of the objects to her because she had never seen them before and they no longer exist or are in use.

Die Ausstellung ist landesspezifisch, also auf Österreich zugeschnitten. Vielleicht habt ihr in eurem Land auch so eine Ausstellung gesehen, dann wahrscheinlich mit Exponaten von dort. Es gab auch viele Plakate und Räume zu sehen, wo österreichische Politik oder sonstige nationale Aufreger dargestellt wurden.

The exhibition is country-specific, tailored to Austria. Perhaps you've seen a similar exhibition in your own country, probably with exhibits from there. There were also many posters and rooms depicting Austrian politics or other national issues.

Im Bild unterhalb sieht man Objekte an der Wand, anhand deren Geräusche man das richtige Ding erraten musste. Ich glaube das eingängigste Geräusch für alle dieser Ära war das Einwählen des Computers ins Internet (hört man auch im Film "e-m@il für Dich").

Wem gehört das Geräusch?, meine Tochter hört Hits der 80er Jahre mit einem Ohrhörer, Musikkassette, Walkman (ich habe meinen Walkman geliebt und ich glaube ich habe ihn immer noch irgendwo)

Who does that sound belong to? My daughter listens to 80s hits with an earphone, music cassette, Walkman (I loved my Walkman and I think I still have it somewhere)

In the picture above, you can see objects on the wall, and you had to guess the correct one based on the sounds they made. I think the most memorable sound for everyone of that era was the computer dialing into the internet (you can also hear it in the film "You've Got Mail").

Da gibt's noch tonnenweise mehr zu sehen. Es war so schön und herzerwärmend, an all die schönen Dinge erinnert zu werden. Auch meine Tochter sagte, dass es schön gewesen sein muss, in dieser Zeit zu leben. Ja, das war's.

There's tons more to see. It was so lovely and heartwarming to be reminded of all those wonderful things. Even my daughter said it must have been wonderful to live in that era. Yes, it was.

W wie Wüste

oder eher W wie Wanderdüne. Zuerst schoss mir natürlich sofort Weihnachten und Wolle durch den Kopf, beides hielt ich für einen Julipost für ungeeignet. Doch nach einer Googlesuche nach Worten mit W, blieb ich bei Wüste hängen. Da war doch was. Genau, die Wanderdüne von El Jable auf Fuerteventura (HIER geht's zum Post). Ein Traumurlaub auf einer faszinierenden Insel auf den Kanaren bescherte uns ein tolles Erlebnis mit einem kleinen Stück Wüste.

W is for Wandering Dune

My first thoughts immediately jumped to the words Christmas (Weihnachten in german) and wool, both of which I considered unsuitable for a July post. But after a Google search for words beginning with W, I got stuck on desert. That rang a bell. Right, the wandering dune of El Jable in Fuerteventura (click HERE to the blogpost). A dream vacation on a fascinating Canary Island (Spain) gave us an impressive experience with a little piece of desert.

Znaim - Znojmo

Am Vatertag haben wir einen Ausflug ins benachbarte Tschechien gemacht. Wir besuchten die mittelalterliche Stadt Znaim. Sie liegt etwa 75 km nördlich von Wien und ist somit nah genug für einen Tagesausflug.

On Father's Day, we took a trip to neighboring Czechia. We visited the medieval town of Znojmo. It's located about 75 km (46 mi) north of Vienna and is therefore close enough for a day trip.

Die Stadt liegt hoch auf einem Felsen und überblickt das flache Umland und den Fluss Thaya. Die Aussicht von der St. Nikolaus-Kirche und von der Katharinenrotunde ins Thayatal war atemberaubend schön.

The town sits high on a rock and overlooks the flat surrounding area and the Thaya River. The view from St. Nicholas Church and from the St. Catherine's Rotunda into the Thaya Valley was breathtakingly beautiful.

Der Tag war heiß, aber durch den heftigen Wind, der um den Hügel und durch die historischen Gassen pfiff, war es angenehm.

The day was hot, but the strong wind whistling around the hill and through the historic streets made it pleasant.

Die vielen Baustellen zeigen, dass sich die Stadt bemüht, die historischen Gebäude zu renovieren.

The many construction sites show that the city is making an effort to renovate the historic buildings.

Am Sonntag war nicht viel los in der Stadt, dennoch hatten Cafés, Restaurants, Eisdielen und Souvenirshops geöffnet.

There wasn't much going on in the city on Sunday, but cafes, restaurants, ice cream parlors and souvenir shops were open.

Uns hat es so gut gefallen, dass wir bestimmt nochmal kommen, um einige Sehenswürdigkeiten zu besuchen, die am Sonntag entweder geschlossen waren oder wir aus Zeitmangel auslassen mussten.

We enjoyed it so much that we will definitely come again to visit some of the sights that were either closed on Sunday or that we had to skip due to lack of time.

Jahresprojekt 2026 - Juni

Nähmaschine benutzen

Im Juni war ich faul. Die Hitze hat mich zwar im Haus gehalten, aber leider auch sehr träge. Ich habe mir neue medizinische Coolpacks geleistet, die man natürlich frisch aus dem Tiefkühler nicht auf die Haut legen kann, weil viel zu frostig. Aus alten, zu Putzfetzen degradierten Geschirrtüchern, habe ich kleine Täschchen genäht. Das Körbchen mit den Täschchen steht auf dem Tiefkühler und man kann die Coolpacks gleich direkt in eines rein stecken. Bei der Hitze fühlt sich das herrlich im Nacken an.

Using my sewing machine

In June I was lazy. The heat kept me indoors, but unfortunately it also made me very sluggish. I bought new medical cool packs, which of course you can't put on your skin fresh from the freezer because they're way too frosty. I sewed little bags out of old tea towels that had been reduced to cleaning scraps. The basket with the bags is on the freezer and you can put the cool packs straight into one. It feels wonderful on the back of your neck in this heat.

Und wie im letzten Beitrag angekündigt, habe ich die zweite Tasche aus dem abgeschnittenem Ärmel auf eine andere Bluse genäht. Das war's. Mehr war im Juni nicht.

And as announced in the last post, I sewed the second pocket from the cut-off sleeve onto another blouse. That's it. Unfortunately, I didn't sew anything else in June.

Monatsrückblick für Juni:

Im Juni war Vatertag. Bei uns wird das so groß gefeiert wie Geburtstag oder Muttertag. Mein Mann hat ein schönes Frühstück auf der Terrasse bekommen und ein technisches Spielzeug. Unser Dorf ist von Wald umgeben und auch im Garten haben wir allerlei Getier. Er wollte schon immer eine Wildkamera haben, um dem nächtlichen Treiben zuzuschauen. Wildkameras sind ja nun nicht billig, aber ein Kommentar sagte, dass gewöhnliche Überwachungskameras für kleines Geld genauso gut sind. Also gekauft, mein Mann hat's montiert und seitdem wird morgens sofort am Tablet geschaut, was nachts im Garten los war. Er hat viel Freude damit :)
Und einen Vatertagsausflug gab es natürlich auch. 90 km nördlich von Wien liegt Znaim (CZ) und da sind wir hingefahren. Ein total süßes kleines historisches Städtchen mit Burg und Kloster auf einem windigen Hügel. Ich werde noch gesondert darüber berichten. Aber schön war's :)
Seit Wochen belagert uns eine Hitzewelle und der Pool wurde schon öfter benutzt als das ganze letzte Jahr. Abkühlung bringt er mit seinen 30°C aber auch nicht mehr.
Die Hitze von beinahe 40 Grad wirkte sich gut auf meine Gurkenzucht aus. Zum ersten Mal kann ich Gurken ernten. In früheren Jahren war es zu nass oder zu kalt oder was weiß ich. Ich freu mich drüber.
Dann habe ich noch eine Social-Media-Sache ausprobiert. Und zwar wird in einen Eimer ein Loch gebohrt und eine Tomatenpflanze verkehrt herum aufgehängt. Ich weiß nicht, ob man das gut erkennen kann, aber der Trieb macht eine Kurve und wächst nach oben. Das war für mich überraschend. Also weiß die Tomatenpflanze wo oben und unten ist. Clever!
Zucchiniernte beginnt. Wir ernähren uns quasi von Zucchini. Es gibt nichts, wo die nicht reinkommen. Ganz toll finde ich auch die Gießtöpfchen, die man neben den Pflanzen eingrabt und das Wasser gleich in die unteren Bodenschichten sickert und nicht oberflächlich verdunstet. Die Wurzeln wachsen tiefer in die Erde und holen sich von unten die Feuchtigkeit.
Das Rosenbeet vor der Terrasse hat kleine Leuchtkörper bekommen. Die funktionieren mit Solarpanel und zaubern eine herrliche Stimmung im Dunkeln.

Die Monatscollage kann man bei die Birgitt abgeben und auch viele andere anschauen.

A retrospect of June:

Father's Day was in June. We celebrate it as much as birthdays or Mother's Day. My husband got a lovely breakfast on the patio and a gadget. Our village is surrounded by forest, and we have all sorts of creatures in the garden. He'd always wanted a wildlife camera to watch their nighttime antics. Wildlife cameras aren't cheap, but someone commented that ordinary security cameras are just as good for a small price. So I bought one, my husband installed it, and since then, every morning he checks the iPad to see what happened in the garden during the night. He's really enjoying it :)
And of course, we also had a Father's Day trip. We drove to Znojmo (CZ), 90 km (56 mi) north of Vienna. A cute little historic town with a castle and monastery on a windy hill. I'll write a separate post about it. But it was lovely :)
We've been battered by a heat wave for weeks now, and the pool has been used more often than in the whole of last year. Water temperature is 30°C (86 F), though, it's not really providing any relief from the heat anymore.
The heat of almost 40 degrees Celsius (104 F) was great for my cucumber plants. For the first time, I can harvest cucumbers. In previous years, it was either too wet or too cold, or whatever. I'm so happy about it.
Then I tried a tip from social media. You drill a hole in a bucket and hang a tomato plant upside down in it. I don't know if you can see it very well, but the shoot curves and grows upwards. That was a surprise. So the tomato plant knows which way is up and which way is down. Clever!
The zucchini harvest has begun. We practically live on zucchini. There's nothing we don't put them in. I also really like the little watering pots that you bury next to the plants so the water seeps directly into the lower layers of soil instead of evaporating on the surface. The roots grow deeper into the soil and draw moisture from below.
The rose bed in front of the patio has been fitted with small lights. They work with solar panels and create a wonderful atmosphere in the dark.

12tel Blick 2026 - Juni

Im Juni traf uns eine Hitzewelle, gestern Wien 40°C. Hier bei uns am Land 37°C. Der Rasen verbrennt und wird braun und strohig. Der Pool hat 32°C und ist keine Abkühlung mehr. Ich gieße meine zwei Gemüsebeete und gehe ansonsten nicht raus. Wir haben keine Klimaanlage. Unser Haus ist historisch und hat 1 Meter dicke Wände. Man hält es auch so aus, wenn man rechtzeitig alles verdunkelt und die Sonne aussperrt. Dennoch zum Foto aufnehmen, musste ich auf den Dachboden. Gleicht einem Saunaaufguss. Zweimal, denn beim 1. Mal stimmte der Winkel wieder nicht. Ich hoffe ihr kommt gut durch die Hitze.

We were hit by a heat wave in June; yesterday it was 40°C (104 F) in Vienna. Here in the countryside, it's 37°C (98 F). The lawn is burning, turning brown and straw-like. The pool is 32°C (89 F) and no longer offers any relief. I'm watering my two vegetable beds and otherwise staying indoors. We don't have air conditioning. Our house is historic and has walls a meter (1 yd) thick. It's bearable if you keep everything dark and out of the sun. Even so, I had to go up to the attic to take the photo. It's like a sauna. Twice, actually, because the angle was wrong the first time. I hope you're all coping well with the heat.

Im Garten freue ich mich über Gurken. Ich probiere es nun schon zwei Jahre, aber es war immer zu feucht und die Pflanzen sind kaputt gegangen. Aber die Hitzewelle war anscheinend genau das was Gurken brauchen, um im Freiland zu gedeihen. Ich habe kein Gewächshaus und ich will auch keines. Mein Schwager zieht Gurken auch im Freiland und die werden immer wunderbar. Im Gegensatz zu mir, hat er einen grünen Daumen. Also ist es kein Wunder, dennoch etwas unfair. Ich bemühe mich so sehr :)

I'm delighted with the cucumbers in my garden. I've been trying for two years now, but it was always too damp and the plants died. But the heatwave was apparently exactly what cucumbers needed to thrive outdoors. I don't have a greenhouse and I don't want one. My brother-in-law also grows cucumbers outdoors, and they always turn out wonderfully. Unlike me, he has a green thumb. So it's no wonder, but still a bit unfair. I try so hard :)

Nähmaschine benutzen - Using my sewing machine

Ein Nähprojekt von früher, nämlich Kaffeefilter aus Stoff selber nähen, ist jetzt beendet. Der erste Stoff, ein juteähnliches Material, eignete sich nicht so sehr. Also habe ich mir zwei andere Stoffe bestellt und beide kann ich empfehlen, das wäre zum einen Canvas Baumwolle natur und zum anderen Leinen-Baumwolle natur. Vorm Zuschnitt unbedingt bei 60°C waschen, da beide Stoffe einlaufen. Die fertigen Filter mache ich vor der Verwendung feucht mit Wasser, damit sie sich besser an den Behälter anpassen und auch damit sie nicht zu viel Kaffee aufsaugen. Den will ich ja in die Tasse haben.

A sewing project from a while back, namely making my own fabric coffee filters, is now finished. The first fabric, a jute-like material, wasn't very suitable. So I ordered two other fabrics, and I can recommend both: natural cotton canvas and natural cotton linen. Be sure to wash them at 60°C/140 F before cutting, as both fabrics shrink. I moisten the finished filters with water before use so they fit the container better and also so they don't absorb too much coffee. I want that coffee in my cup, after all.

Das größte Projekt im Mai war eine Bettwäsche Garnitur anpassen. Von Freunden haben wir vor vielen Jahren zwei Bettwäsche Garnituren des bekannten spanischen Modelabels geschenkt bekommen. Nur leider verwenden die Spanier anscheinend ganz andere Maße als wir hier in Österreich und Deutschland. Zu breit und viel zu lang. Beim Umräumen im Nähzimmer habe ich die Bettwäsche ganz vergraben wieder gefunden und mich nochmal in das Design verliebt. Da ich so viel Stoff wegschneiden musste, kam mir die Idee diesen Abschnitt für einen Hotelverschluss zu benutzen. Klappte super, war zwar etwas aufwändig und viele Meter zu nähen, aber jetzt ist es fertig. Ich habe unten in der Mitte noch ein Bändchen eingenäht, damit die Öffnung nicht so aufklafft und alles schön am Platz bleibt. Bin sehr zufrieden!

The biggest project in May was altering a bedding set. Many years ago, friends gave us two sets from a well-known Spanish fashion label. Unfortunately, the Spanish apparently use completely different measurements than we do here in Austria and Germany. Too wide and much too long. While rearranging things in the sewing room, I rediscovered the bedding, buried deep inside, and fell in love with the design all over again. Since I had to cut away so much fabric, I had the idea to use this section for an envelope closure. It worked perfectly, although it was a bit time-consuming and involved sewing many meters of fabric, but now it's finished. I also sewed a ribbon in the middle at the bottom so the opening wouldn't gape open so much and everything would stay nicely in place. I'm very pleased!

Dann brauchte meine Tochter für den Job eine weiße Kurzarmbluse aus Baumwolle. Was Passendes war auf die Schnelle schwer zu finden (Größe, Qualität und Preis), also habe ich ihre Schulbluse adaptiert. Lange Ärmel abgeschnitten und aus den Abschnitten Taschen genäht. Eine Tasche kam hier drauf. Die andere Tasche kommt auf eine andere Bluse und muss ich erst noch aufnähen.

Then my daughter needed a white, short-sleeved cotton blouse for her job. Finding something suitable on such short notice was difficult (size, quality, and price), so I adapted her school blouse. I cut off the long sleeves and sewed pockets from the scraps. One pocket is attached here. The other pocket will go on a different blouse and I still need to sew it on.

Und das kleinste Projekt kommt zum Schluss. Ist eigentlich fast nicht erwähnenswert, wenn es nicht ein jahrelanges Problem gelöst hätte. Das Rückenteil der Sitzauflagen für die Gartenstühle klappte immer nach vorne. Bei jedem Aufstehen oder nach vorne beugen, musste man das Teil wieder nach oben klappen und irgendwie festzwängen. Nur Bändchen würden beim Hinsetzen oder Herumrutschen ausreißen. Also habe ich einfach einen Riegel aus Gummiband angenäht und dann kann man jede Art von Band oder Schnur zum Festbinden verwenden und es reißt auch nichts aus. Es sieht zwar auch nicht schön aus, aber bei den alten Dingern ist das auch egal.

And the smallest project comes last. It's almost not worth mentioning, if it hadn't solved a problem that had been going on for years. The backrest of the garden chair seat cushions kept folding forward. Every time I stood up or bent over, I had to fold it back up. Just using ties would tear out when I sat down. So I simply sewed on a loop of elastic, and now you can use any kind of ribbon or cord to tie it in place. It doesn't look pretty, but with these old seat cushions, it doesn't really matter.

Monatsrückblick für Mai:

Ich habe mein Gartenfahrrad wieder mit blühenden Topfblumen bestückt und es wird mich den ganzen Sommer über erfreuen.
Ich habe meine Tellersammlung mit Pastateller ergänzt. Da passt auch eine Menge Suppe und Eintopf drauf.
Nachdem ich meine Tastatur jahrelang nur entstaubt habe, war jetzt eine größere Reinigung dran. Bitte zuallererst die Tastatur abstecken und ein Foto der Tastatur machen, damit man nachher die Tasten wieder richtig einordnen kann. Mit einem Schraubenzieher für Schlitzschrauben habe ich die einzelnen Tastenteile vorsichtig raus gehebelt, in ein Wäschenetz und für einen kurzen leichten Spülgang (Gläser) in die Spülmaschine gegeben. In der Zwischenzeit die Tastatur ausgesaugt und mit Lappen und Wattestäbchen geputzt. Das Putzmittel meiner Wahl war Klarspüler. Nur leicht den Lappen und die Wattestäbchen feucht machen. Nachdem die Tasten gut durchgetrocknet sind, war das Einsetzen dank den Fotos kein Problem. Die Tastatur sieht wieder wie neu aus.
Meine Beete sind bepflanzt. Dieses hier mit Tomaten, Salat, Gurke und Sonnenblumen.
Weil der Mai schön heiß war, blühen schon viele der Rosen, das hier ist die Edelrose "Augusta Luise", eine mehrfarbige duftende Rose.
Erdbeerzeit! Fünf Kilo Erdbeeren auf dem Feld besorgt und gerade geschafft zwei Kilo einzukochen, bevor meine zwei Lieben den Rest inhaliert haben.
Im Einkaufszentrum gibt es eine Rutsche für Kinder. Vor dem Einstieg klebt dieses Schild und manchmal gibt es Situation, wo jeder so eine Rutsche brauchen würde.
Muttertag war herrlich! Meine zwei Lieben haben mich mit einer Reise von Wien nach Bratislava per Schnellboot überrascht. In der slowakischen Hauptstadt waren wir ja schon öfter, da sie nur knapp 80 km von Wien entfernt liegt, aber per Schiff waren wir noch nie dort. Der Twin-City-Liner ist ein Katamaran, der uns blitzschnell in 75 Minuten über die Donau nach Bratislava gebracht hat. Es war toll!
Beim Eis essen im örtlichen Eissalon, fiel uns der Stern am Himmel auf, den die Flugzeuge gemalt hatten.

A retrospect of May:

I've restocked my garden bike with flowering potted plants, and it will bring me joy all summer long.
I've added pasta plates to my plate collection. It's also big enough for a lot of soup and stew.
After years of just dusting my keyboard, it was time for a thorough cleaning. First of all, please unplug the keyboard and take a picture of it so that the keys can be correctly re-arranged afterwards. Using a flathead screwdriver, I carefully pried out the individual keycaps, put them in a mesh laundry bag, and ran them through a short, gentle cycle (glasses) in the dishwasher. Meanwhile, I vacuumed the keyboard and cleaned it with a cloth and cotton swabs. My cleaning agent of choice was rinse aid. Just lightly dampen the cloth and cotton swabs. Once the keys were completely dry, putting them back in was no problem thanks to the photos. The keyboard looks like new again.
My garden beds are planted. This one has tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers, and sunflowers.
Because May was so beautifully hot, many of the roses are already in bloom. This one is the hybrid tea rose "Augusta Luise," a multicolored, fragrant rose.
Strawberry season! I bought five kilos of strawberries at the field and just managed to preserve two kilos before my two darlings inhaled the rest.
There's a slide for children at the shopping center. There's this sign at the entrance which says: "That's it for me, I'm going to go sliding", and sometimes there are situations where everyone could need a slide like that.
Mother's Day was wonderful! My family surprised me with a trip from Vienna to Bratislava by speedboat. We've been to the Slovakian capital several times before, as it's only about 80 km/50 mi from Vienna, but we'd never been there by boat. The Twin City Liner is a catamaran that whisked us across the Danube to Bratislava in a lightning-fast 75 minutes. It was fantastic!
While eating ice cream at the local ice cream parlor, we noticed the star painted in the sky by airplanes.

Der Mai war wunderbar, aber viel zu trocken. Wie üblich in den letzten Jahren. Auf Rasen und Wiesen sieht man schon Trockenflecken. Im Garten werden nur die Gemüsebeete bewässert und vielleicht noch ab und zu das kurze Stück Rasen bis zum Poolplatz. Der Pool steht noch nicht. Wir haben keine Poolheizung, also wird gewartet bis die Hitze stabil bleibt. Das Foto wurde frühmorgens aufgenommen, Sonne kommt von links, da ist Osten. Im Mai hat auch der letzte Baum seine Blätterpracht ausgebildet und das ist der Walnussbaum. Im Aprilfoto sieht man hinter dem rechten Hochbeet noch einen eher kahlen Baum, das ist der Nussbaum. Hätte ich nicht eine 12tel-Blick-Fotoserie über den Walnussbaum gemacht, wäre mir das gar nicht aufgefallen.

May was wonderful, but far too dry. As usual in recent years. You can already see dry patches on the lawn and meadows. In the garden, only the vegetable beds are watered, and perhaps occasionally the short stretch of lawn leading to the pool area. The pool isn't set up yet. We don't have a pool heater, so we're waiting until the heat is consistently good. The photo was taken early in the morning; the sun is coming from the left, which is east. In May, the last tree finally developed its full leaves, and that's the walnut tree. In the April picture, you can see a rather bare tree behind the raised bed on the right; that's the walnut tree. If I hadn't taken a series of photos of the walnut tree for the photo challenge some years ago, I wouldn't have noticed it at all.

Mein Gartenfahrrad ist auch bepflanzt. Da kaufe ich einfach die farbenprächtigsten Blumentöpfe, die die pralle Sonne aushalten und erfreue mich den ganzen Sommer an der Blütenpracht.

My garden bike is also planted with flowers. I simply buy the most colorful flower pots that can withstand full sun and enjoy the beautiful blooms all summer long.

U wie Upcycling

Ich liebe es, Kleidung oder andere Materialien in etwas zu verwandeln, das man wieder gebrauchen kann und somit dem Wertstoff eine neue Bedeutung und ein weiteres Leben zu geben.

Auf meinem Blog findet man unter dem Label "Recycling" diese und viele weitere Beispiele.

Zu kleine Shirts habe ich für meine Tochter zu bunter Kleidung genäht.

I love transforming clothes or other materials into something reusable, giving these recyclables a new purpose and a second life.

Zu kurze oder kaputte Hosen wurden zu Shorts.
Trousers that were too short or torn became shorts.

Zu kleine Bademäntel wurden zu Badematten, kleine Handtücher oder Täschchen.
Bathrobes that were too small were repurposed as bath mats, small towels, or small bags.

Eine Arbeitsmontur wurde eine große Einkaufstasche.
A work outfit became a large shopping bag.

Statt Küchenpapiertücher wurden Babylätzchen, Waschlappen und alte Handtücher adaptiert.

Nähmaschine benutzen

Diesmal habe ich auch was ganz Neues genäht, und zwar eine große Beuteltasche für meine Tochter (Inspiration Tasche SOLE, Schnittmuster kostenlos bei Snaply). Innen mit Volumenvlies gefüttert. Meine Tochter hat sich gefreut, weil die Tasche "weich wie ein Kissen" ist. Außerdem ist sie mit einem Reißverschluss versehen und der Lederhenkel war mal ein Ledergurt, der ein paar Schwachstellen hatte, aber dafür genau richtig war.

Vor Jahren habe ich meiner Tochter eine Schürze genäht, die sie jetzt nur mehr selten verwendet, aber mit der großen Bauchtasche wäre sie genau richtig, wenn ich Gartenarbeit mache, um meine Brille und das Handy dabei zu haben. Eine Rucksackschnalle eines alten Rucksacks macht den Halsträger variabel und dadurch auch für mich tragbar. Wenn Rucksäcke aufreißen oder einer der Reißverschlüsse kaputt ist, schneide ich alle Teile runter die noch OK sind, meistens Schnallen, Steckteile, Trägergurte oder auch Reißverschlüsse.

Und eine Jeans bekam ein Gummiband im Bund an der Rückseite. Zack zack, zwei Nähte und fertig. Mit Gürtel oder Shirt drüber, sieht man gar nichts und die Hose liegt schön an.

Using my sewing machine

This time I sewed something completely new: a large bag for my daughter. It's lined with batting. My daughter was thrilled because the bag is "as soft as a pillow." It also has a zipper, and the leather handle was originally a leather belt that had a few flaws, but it was perfect for that purpose.

Years ago, I sewed my daughter an apron, which she now rarely wears, but with the large pouch, it would be perfect for carrying my glasses and phone when I'm gardening. A buckle from an old backpack makes the neck strap adjustable, so I can wear it too. When backpacks rip or one of the zippers breaks, I cut off all the parts that are still usable—usually buckles, snap fasteners, straps, or even zippers.

And I added an elastic band to the back of a pair of jeans. Chop-chop, two seams, and it's done. With a belt or shirt over it, you can't see a thing, and the pants fit nicely.

Monatsrückblick für April:

Date-Night in einem sehr guten Burgerrestaurant mit Cocktails. Lecker!
Mit meiner Tochter an ihrem freien Tag im Spa.
Eine neugierige furchtlose Amsel guckt beim Fenster meiner Ladylounge rein und ist auch noch interessiert als ich sie anspreche und mit den Armen herumwinke. Erst als ich aufstand und auf sie zuging, hüpfte sie raus.
April = Magnolienblüte. Einfach ein Traum und die Blüten duften herrlich.
Durch ein paar ziemlich warme Tage blühte Ende April auch schon der Flieder. Wie man auf dem Vogelbild sieht, direkt vor meinem Fenster.
Das beste an Ostern, außer freie Tage, ist der Reindling meiner Schwiegermutter. Hab schon viele andere gekostet, ihrer ist der Beste.
Ausflug in die Österreichische Nationalbibliothek in Wien. Der Prunksaal ist einfach atemberaubend.
Ach ja, einmal schockte uns Mutter Natur, indem sie es kurz und heftig schneien ließ, aber zum Glück ohne Auswirkungen auf die Magnolienblüte.

A retrospect of April:

Date night at a really good burger restaurant with cocktails. Delicious!
At the spa with my daughter on her day off.
A curious, fearless blackbird peered in through the window of my lady lounge and was still interested when I spoke to it and waved my arms. Only when I stood up and walked towards it did it hop out.
April = Magnolia blossoms. Simply a dream, and the blossoms smell wonderful.
Thanks to a few rather warm days, the lilacs were already in bloom at the end of April. As you can see in the bird picture, right outside my window.
The best thing about Easter, besides the time off, is my mother-in-law's Reindling (a traditional Austrian Easter cake). I've tried many others, but hers is the best.
A trip to the Austrian National Library in Vienna. The State Hall is simply breathtaking.
Oh yes, Mother Nature once shocked us by letting it snow briefly and heavily, but luckily it had no effect on the magnolia blossoms.

Bumm und grün. April war wunderbar, außer zu wenig Regen. Aber so sind die Zeiten nun mal, es wird immer trockener. Meine Gemüsebeete sind fertig und demnächst wird gepflanzt. Das Schilf ist geschnitten und auch einige Blumenbeete habe ich durchgejätet und geschnitten, aber noch nicht alles. Momentan blühen die Apfelbäume, die Blutpflaume und der Flieder. So schön!

Boom and green. April was wonderful, except for the lack of rain. But that's how things are these days; it's getting drier and drier. My vegetable beds are ready, and I'll be planting soon. The reeds have been cut, and I've also weeded and trimmed some of the flower beds, but not everything yet. The apple trees, the purple-leaf plum, and the lilac are currently in bloom. So beautiful!

Nähmaschine benutzen

Seit Jahren versuche ich täglichen Müll im Haushalt zu vermeiden. Ich verwende schon lange Kaffeefilter aus Stoff und bin überaus zufrieden damit. Sie halten nicht ewig, aber Jahre. Bis jetzt habe ich sie immer gekauft, aber die kann ich doch auch selber nähen. Das Nähen ist hier nicht das Problem, sondern der Stoff. Dieser Prototyp wird wohl in der Tonne landen, da ich mit der Textur des Stoffes nicht zufrieden bin. Zu grobmaschig und daher zu durchlässig für Kaffeepulver. Aber ich habe schon zwei andere Stoffproben, die ich ausprobieren werde. Also mehr dazu demnächst.

Das zweite Nähprojekt war das Kürzen einer Jeanshose meiner Tochter. War schnell erledigt. Das Kaufen jedoch nicht. Meine Tochter (20) ist schlank, eigentlich Größe 36 oder S, aber da fühlt sie sich nicht wohl, also Größe 38 oder M. Jeanskauf in allen gängigen Shops war schrecklich. Man sollte doch meinen, dass das eine Sache von Minuten ist bei ihrer Figur. Sowas von nein. Machen die eigentlich Mode für normale Frauen? Hosenbeine zu eng, aber um die Taille passt noch eine andere Person rein. Hinten im Rücken steht ständig die Hose ab, egal welche Größe. Als es mir nach vier Geschäften reichte, fiel mir ein, dass ich für meine Tochter als sie klein war, immer in der Bubenabteilung einkaufen war, weil sie keine rosa, glitzernden (das hat sich zum Glück geändert), bestickten oder engen Hosen mochte. Also haben wir dort mal geschaut und zwei anprobiert, wobei eine auf Anhieb passte (außer die Länge). Verhältnis Po-Taille passte und es stand auch nichts ab. Und das Plus waren ordentlich große Taschen und billigerer Preis als in der Damenabteilung. Also ich empfehle, wenn man sonst nichts findet, mal in der Herrenabteilung zu stöbern.

Using my sewing machine

For years I've been trying to avoid daily household waste. I've been using cloth coffee filters for a long time and I'm extremely happy with them. They don't last forever, but they do last for years. Until now, I've always bought them, but I can easily sew them myself. Sewing isn't the problem here, it's the fabric. This prototype will probably end up in the bin because I'm not happy with the texture of the fabric. It's too loosely woven and therefore too permeable for coffee grounds. But I already have two other fabric samples that I'll try. So more on that soon.

The second sewing project was hemming a pair of my daughter's jeans. That was done quickly. Buying them, however, was not. My daughter (20) is slim, usually a size 36 or S, but she doesn't feel comfortable in those, so she wears a size 38 or M. Buying jeans in all the usual shops was a nightmare. You'd think it would be a matter of minutes with her figure. Not a chance. Do they even make clothes for normal women? The legs are too tight, but there's still room for another person around the waist. The pants always gape at the back, no matter the size. After four shops, I'd had enough and remembered that when my daughter was little, I always shopped in the boys' section because she didn't like pink, glittery (thankfully, that's changed), embroidered, or tight pants. So we had a look there and tried on two pairs, one of which fit perfectly right away (except for the length). The waist-to-hip ratio was right, and there was no gaping. Plus, they had decent-sized pockets and were cheaper than in the women's section. So, if you can't find anything else, I recommend browsing the men's section.

T wie Trifle

Ein Trifle ist ein Dessert ursprünglich aus England. Normalerweise verwendet man Kuchenreste. Da bei uns nie Kuchen übrig bleibt, habe ich eine Biskuitroulade gemacht und in Scheiben geschnitten. Dann schichtet man den Kuchen mit Früchten, Vanillepudding, Mascarponecreme oder Sahne abwechselnd in eine Glasschüssel. Der Fantasie sind beim Trifle keine Grenzen gesetzt. Man kann auch noch Kekse und Konfekt, Karamellcreme und Schokosauce rein gegeben. Je nachdem, ob es ein heller Trifle oder ein dunkler werden soll. Das Ganze dann längere Zeit in den Kühlschrank geben, am besten über Nacht. Erwachsenentauglich wird der Trifle, wenn man Baileys oder Eierlikör oder sonstiges reinkippt. Ich brauche wohl nicht zu erwähnen, dass dieses Dessert einfach himmlisch schmeckt.

T is for Trifle

A trifle is a dessert originally from England. It's usually made with leftover cake. That's something I don't understand: who has leftover cake? We never have any. I made a Swiss roll and sliced it. Then you layer the cake with fruit, vanilla custard, mascarpone cream, or whipped cream in a glass bowl. There are no limits to your imagination when it comes to trifle. You can also add cookies and sweets, caramel sauce, and chocolate sauce, depending on whether you want a white or brown trifle. Then put the bowl in the refrigerator for a while, ideally overnight. For an adult-friendly version, you can add Baileys, eggnog, or something similar. Needless to say, this dessert tastes absolutely heavenly.

Monatsrückblick für März:

Im Tiefkühlschrank fand ich noch eine Packung Zwetschken von der letzten Sommerernte. Ein Blechkuchen mit Streuseln war in der kalten Zeit ein Highlight.
Ein verspätetes Weihnachtsgeschenk an uns, war ein Rudergerät. Wir haben uns alle auf dieses Sportgerät geeinigt. Macht Spaß und trainiert unsere Muckis.
Ende März wurde es endlich warm und sofort wurde unser Terrassenbett hergerichtet. Muss man zwar noch mit dicker Decke und warmer Weste benutzen, aber der Blick in den blühenden Garten ist wunderbar.
Im März beginnt unsere Magnolie zu blühen und wir haben gehofft, dass die tiefen Temperaturen der Blüte nichts anhaben und zum Glück ist nichts passiert. Sie blüht traumhaft.
Ich suche seit Jahren ein neues Service, konnte mich jedoch nie für ein Dekor entscheiden und habe nun beschlossen, einzelne Teller zu kaufen, die mir gefallen. Einige habe ich schon und jeder einzelne macht mir Freude.
Mein Mann macht ein paar Ausbesserungen an meinem Hochbeet und wird hoffentlich vor Pflanzsaison fertig.
Nach Weihnachten habe ich die Reste unserer Weihnachtskekse eingefroren, weil wir einfach keine mehr wollten. Im März habe ich mich daran erinnert und rechtzeitig zur Kaffeejause aus dem Gefrierkasten geholt. Die haben wie frisch geschmeckt und wir haben uns richtig daran erfreut. Also statt vertrocknen und wegwerfen, einfach einfrieren und sie später genießen.
Im Gartencenter habe ich mich in eine rote Christrose (Helleborus orientalis) verliebt und sie blühend direkt ins Beet gepflanzt und sie hat die Prozedur gut überstanden und ist nicht verwelkt und blüht weiterhin herrlich.

A retrospect of March:

I found a package of plums from last summer's harvest in the freezer. A sheet cake with crumb topping was a real treat during the cold weather.
A belated Christmas present for all of us was a rowing machine. We all agreed on this piece of sports equipment and we enjoy using it, and it's great for working our muscles.
At the end of March, it finally got warm, and we immediately set up our patio bed. We still have to use it with a thick blanket and a warm vest, but the view into the blooming yard is wonderful.
Our magnolia started blooming in March, and we hoped the low temperatures wouldn't harm the blossoms, but thankfully, nothing happened. It's blooming beautifully.
I've been looking for a new dinner service for years, but I could never decide on a design, so I've decided to buy individual plates that I like. I already have a few, and I enjoy each one.
My husband is making some repairs to my raised garden bed and will hopefully finish before planting season.
After Christmas, I froze the leftover Christmas cookies because we simply didn't want any more. In March, I remembered this and took them out of the freezer just in time for our afternoon coffee break. They tasted like they were freshly made, and we really enjoyed them. So instead of letting them dry out and throwing them away, just freeze them and enjoy them later.
I bought a red Christmas rose (Helleborus orientalis) at the garden center and planted it directly in the flower bed while it was still in bloom. It survived the process well, didn't wilt, and is still blooming beautifully.

In der Foto-Collage merkt man deutlich wie grün das Gras geworden ist. Außerdem blüht schon eine ganze Menge. Ein paar Details aus dem Foto habe ich unten größer gezeigt. Mein Mann repariert gerade wieder mein Hochbeet. Alle paar Jahre muss man ein paar Latten austauschen, weil sie verrotten. Rechtzeitig vor der Pflanzung wird er fertig werden. Momentan ist wieder ein kleiner Kälteeinbruch und wir haben Angst um die Magnolien- und Marillenblüte. Der Anhänger vom letzten Mal ist weg und das Holz entlang der Hausmauer aufgeschichtet. Hier kann es schön durchtrocknen und wird in der nächsten Heizsaison verwendet. Immer wieder schön in den Gärten ist die Forsythienblüte. Sie zeigt dem Winter so richtig, dass jetzt der Frühling dran ist.

In the photo collage, you can clearly see how green the grass has become. A lot of plants are already in bloom, too. I've included a few larger details from the photo below. My husband is currently repairing my raised garden bed. Every few years, a few boards need replacing because they rot. He'll have it finished in time for planting. We're having another cold snap at the moment, and we're worried about the magnolia and apricot blossoms. The trailer from last time is gone, and the wood is stacked along the house wall. It can dry out nicely here and will be used next heating season. The forsythia blossom is always a beautiful sight in the gardens. It really signals to winter that spring has arrived.

S wie Südsteiermark

Wir lieben die Südsteiermark und versuchen jedes Jahr im Herbst ein paar Tage in dieser Region zu verbringen. Das sanfte Hügelland, die Farbenpracht im Herbst und die laue weiche Luft erden mich wie kein anderer Ort. Hier brauche ich keine Abenteuer oder Animation, die Sehenswürdigkeit ist das Land. Nur schauen und genießen reicht mir völlig.

S is for Southern Styria

We love Southern Styria and try to spend a few days there every autumn. The rolling hills, the vibrant autumn colors, and the balmy, soft air ground me like nowhere else. Here, I don't need adventures or entertainment; the landscape itself is the attraction. Simply looking around and enjoying the view is enough for me.

Nähmaschine benutzen

Mein Jahresprojekt ist ja mindestens einmal im Monat meine Nähmaschinen zu benutzen, entweder um ein neues Projekt zu nähen oder/und eine Reparatur durchzuführen. Im Februar habe ich zwei große Servietten für den Brotkorb genäht. Stoffe waren vorhanden. Zum einen ein Leinen-/Baumwollgemisch, das unmöglich glatt zu bügeln ist. Zum anderen eine Baumwolltischdecke von meiner Oma, wo ich die bestickten Ecken verwendete. Ein simples, schnelles Projekt, das schon Jahre auf seine Ausführung wartete. Daher bin ich sehr zufrieden damit.

Using my sewing machine

My annual project is to use my sewing machine at least once a month, either to sew a new project or to do a repair. In February, I sewed two large napkins for the bread basket. I already had the fabrics in my stash. One was a linen/cotton blend that's impossible to iron smooth. The other was a cotton tablecloth from my grandmother, from which I used the embroidered corners. A simple, quick project that had been waiting for years to be completed. So I'm very pleased with it.

Monatsrückblick für Februar:

Im Februar hatten wir öfter in Wien zu tun und im Café Prückel kann man schön Frühstücken und Mittagessen.
Seit meine Tochter (20) im 1. Stock ihre eigenen Räume hat, habe ich mir ihr altes Spielzimmer/Büro zu meinem Salon umgewandelt. Dafür habe ich mir ein Wandtuch mit Motiv geleistet, damit in dem winzigen Zimmer sowas wie Weite entsteht. Gefällt mir so gut.
Mein Mann und ich haben zwei Tage Spa eingelegt. Diesmal in einem Ayurveda-Hotel. Es war einfach nur göttlich. Gourmetessen rund um die Uhr und sich verwöhnen lassen. Bitte mehr davon.
Meine bevorzugte Lemon Curd Marke ist leider nicht mehr erhältlich. Also habe ich es selbst gemacht. Fazit: Ich brauche meine bevorzugte Lemon Curd Marke nicht mehr. Schmeckt selbst gemacht viel besser und ist so einfach zu machen :)
Ach ja Winter hat auch noch mal kurz für zwei Tage vorbei geschaut. War schön, aber jetzt ist Frühling angesagt.
Eins meiner Weihnachtsgeschenke war ein Candlelight-Konzert und zwar ABBA meets Queen. Das klassische Konzert fand im Palais Coburg in Wien in den Kasematten (historischer Festungskeller) statt und war außergewöhnlich.
Wieder ein Termin in Wien und meine Tochter und ich mussten bis zum Abend auf eine Mitfahrgelegenheit nach Hause warten (also auf meinen Mann). Was macht man mit einer Tagesfahrkarte in Wien, natürlich zuerst Straßenbahnfahren (Linie D) [Musik im Kopf: Dieser Tag fährt Straßenbahn - Mondscheiner] und dann ins Schloss Belvedere und sich die Klimt-Ausstellung anschauen. Sehr schön!
Ich wünsche mir ein neues Speisegeschirr und suche schon Jahre und ich bin total unentschlossen. Wieder für Jahre das gleiche Muster. Nein. Das war mal. Also kaufe ich jetzt einfach einzelne Teller, die mir gefallen. Einige habe ich schon und ich liebe jeden einzelnen. Diesmal habe ich einen Teller gefunden mit Häuschen am Rand entlang. Ich liebe Häuschen. Ist er nicht bezaubernd? Da musste ich doch gleich Toast mit pochiertem Ei und Guacamole darauf in Szene setzen.
Mein Schneeglöckchen direkt vor Küchenfenster. Es kommt jedes Jahr. Immer nur dieses eine. Irgendein Vogel oder ein Mäuslein hat hier mal ein Samenkorn fallen lassen. Danke :)

A retrospect of February:

In February, we were in Vienna quite often, and Café Prückel is a lovely place for breakfast and lunch.
Since my daughter (20) got her own rooms on the first floor, I've transformed her old playroom/office into my salon. I treated myself to a wall hanging with a Greek island scene to create a sense of spaciousness in the tiny room. I love it!
My husband and I treated ourselves to two days of spa treatments. This time at an Ayurveda hotel. It was simply divine. Gourmet food around the clock and being pampered. More of that, please!
My favorite brand of lemon curd is unfortunately no longer available. So I made it myself. Conclusion: I don't need my favorite brand of lemon curd anymore. Homemade tastes so much better and is so easy to make :)
Oh yes, winter also made a brief return for two days. It was lovely, but now it's time for spring to come.
One of my Christmas presents was a candlelight concert: ABBA meets Queen. The classical concert took place in the casemates (historic fortress cellars) of Palais Coburg in Vienna and was exceptional.
Another appointment in Vienna, and my daughter and I had to wait until evening for a ride home (i.e. for my husband). So what does one do with a day ticket in Vienna? First, of course, take the tram (line D) and then go to Belvedere Palace to see the Klimt exhibition. Lovely!
I've been wanting new dinnerware for years and I'm totally undecided. The same pattern for years again? No. So now I just buy individual plates that I like. I already have a few, and I love every single one. This time I found a plate with little houses around the rim. I love little houses. Isn't it charming? I just had to put toast with a poached egg and guacamole on it.
My snowdrop right outside the kitchen window. It comes back every year. Always just this one. Some bird or mouse must have dropped a seed here. Thank you :)

12tel Blick 2026 - Februar

Der 12tel Blick ist von heute. Ich hatte zwar schon einen vom 14. Februar, aber heute bei genauerer Betrachtung habe ich gesehen, dass ich den Winkel total vergeigt habe. Leider habe ich keine Ausrede mehr, dass ich nicht sofort die Stiegen rauf laufe und neu knipse. Das habe ich dann auch getan und so halbwegs hin bekommen. Nur die Sonne hatte ein Wörtchen mit geredet und immer einen störenden Strahl geschickt. Ist halt jetzt so. Schnee ist weg und es wird warm draußen. Naja jedenfalls so viel, dass Krokus und Schneeglöckchen um die Wette blühen. Momentan steht der Anhänger im Garten, weil mein Mann nochmals Brennholz besorgt hat. Das wird demnächst abgeladen und der Anhänger wieder weg geschoben.

This view is from today. I already took one on February 14th, but upon closer inspection today, I saw that I completely messed up the angle. Unfortunately, I have no excuse anymore not to immediately run up the stairs and take another picture. Which I did, and managed to get a halfway decent result. Only the sun had other ideas, sending along one annoying ray after another. OK, fine. The snow is gone, and it's getting warm outside. Well, warm enough, anyway, that the crocuses and snowdrops are blooming like crazy. The trailer is currently parked in the garden because my husband has bought more firewood. It will be unloaded soon, and the trailer will be moved again.

Worum geht's bei dieser Aktion? 12 Mal im Jahr, also jeden Monat, macht man von der gleichen Stelle aus ein Foto mit demselben Blick und kann so dann die Veränderungen dokumentieren. Wenn man die Fotos dann in eine Collage zusammenfügt, sieht das sehr reizvoll aus. Gastgeberin dieser Aktion ist Eva von verfuchstundzugenäht. Dort wird gesammelt und man kann sich die anderen Teilnehmer anschauen. Sehr spannend!

R wie Rosen

Beim Buchstaben R sind mir sofort Rosen eingefallen. Ich denke immer noch zurück, als wir unser Haus gekauft haben, vor über zwei Jahrzehnten, und ich in den Garten schaute und sagte: "Aber Rosen pflanzen wir keine, die mag ich nicht." Und nun nach vielen Jahren und etwa 20 Rosenbüschen später, bin ich immer noch kein Fan, aber kaufe sie trotzdem. Wie alles in meinem Garten, muss jede Pflanze mit den natürlichen Gegebenheiten alleine zurecht kommen. Bei mir gibt es keinen Dünger oder aufwändige Pflege oder Spritzungen gegen irgendwas. Einige Rosen verschwanden, aber der Großteil hat sich angepasst und blüht trotz der manchmal nicht optimalen Umstände. Sie sind nicht so Diven wie man denkt.

R is for Roses

The letter R immediately brings roses to mind. I still think back to when we bought our house over two decades ago, and I looked out into my backyard and said, "But we're not planting any roses, I don't like them." And now, many years and about 20 rose bushes later, I'm still not a fan, but I buy them anyway. Like everything in my garden, each plant has to cope with the natural conditions on its own. I don't use any fertilizer, elaborate care, or sprays for anything. Some roses disappeared, but most have adapted and bloom despite the sometimes less than ideal circumstances. They are acting less as a prima donna as you might think.

Jahresprojekt 2026 - Jänner

Nähmaschine benutzen

Andrea von die Zitronenfalterin sammelt wieder Jahresprojekte und wieder war der Start für mich sehr schwierig. Ich habe früher sehr viel genäht und irgendwann habe ich die Lust daran verloren, aber so komplett. Was ich dennoch gerne mache, sind Reparaturen. Über die berichte ich aber nie, weil es wirklich nicht der Rede wert ist. Eine Mininaht dort oder da und schon kann man ein Teil wieder benutzen. Mein Jahresprojekt dreht sich aber um jede Art von Nähprojekt, sei es Reparaturen oder neue Sachen. Die Nähmaschinen haben viel Geld gekostet und sollten auch benutzt werden. Ich habe wirklich sehr kleine Nähprojekte im Jänner gehabt und auch dazu musste ich mich zwingen, weil ich ja bei der Aktion mitmachen und einen Beitrag posten wollte.

Bei meiner Jeans löste sich eine Gürtelschlaufe. Da ich ja noch andere Jeans hatte, lag die Hose etwa 3 Wochen neben meiner Nähmaschine und wartete auf eine kleine Mininaht. Erledigt in 5 Minuten, wobei Garn aussuchen und einspannen länger brauchte als die Naht.
Im Haufen neben der Nähmaschine zog ich dann zufällig auch noch mein Sommerblusenshirt heraus, weil ich wissen wollte, was das ist. Liegt seit etwa 2 Jahren dort (daher die Knitter) und wartet auf Reparatur. Ich habe die Bluse in der Waschmaschine gewaschen und dort wurden beim Waschen die Bänder abgerissen. Reparatur dauerte auch nur 5 Minuten.

Das war's, leider kann ich noch nicht mehr vorweisen. Mein Jahresprojekt ist ein Prozess und ein Anreiz, um wieder Freude am Nähen zu bekommen. Wir werden sehen, wie sich das entwickelt.

Using my Sewing Machine

Andrea from the blog 'die Zitronenfalterin' is collecting year-long projects again, and once again, the start was very difficult for me. I used to sew a lot, but at some point, I completely lost interest. What I still enjoy doing, though, are repairs. I never write about those, however, because they're really nothing to write home about. A tiny seam here or there, and you can use a garment again. My year-long project, however, revolves around every kind of sewing project, whether it's repairs or new creations. The sewing machines cost a lot of money and should be used. I did have some very small sewing projects in January, and I even had to force myself to do them because I wanted to participate in the project and post something.

One of the belt loops on my jeans came loose. Since I had other jeans, the pair sat next to my sewing machine for about three weeks, waiting for a tiny stitch. It was done in five minutes, although choosing the thread and threading the machine took longer than the actual stitching.
I then happened to pull out my summer blouse from the pile next to the sewing machine because I wanted to see what it was. It's been lying there for about two years (hence the creases) waiting to be repaired. I washed the blouse in the washing machine, and the ties ripped during the wash. The repair only took five minutes.

That's it, unfortunately, I don't have anything else to show for now. My year-long project is a process and an incentive to rediscover the joy of sewing. We'll see how it develops.

Monatsrückblick für Jänner:

Der Jänner startete wie immer mit einem Neujahrsspaziergang im Schnee bei sonnigem Wetter und eisiger Kälte.
Die Kälte hielt meinen Mann nicht davon ab, die Grillsaison zu eröffnen. Wobei man sagen muss, dass bei uns immer Grillsaison ist.
und
Zwei neue Hauben sind für mich entstanden. Ich kann anscheinend nicht genug kriegen vom Mützen stricken.
Eines der Weihnachtsgeschenke für meine Tochter war eine ABBA-Show und wir durften mitgehen. Die Show war einfach nur großartig und wir haben uns herrlich amüsiert.
Meine Orchideen in der Vase blühen gerade so schön auf dem Fensterbrett.
Entweder ein Reh besucht unseren Garten sehr oft oder einmal war ein ganzes Rudel da. Durch den Schnee kann man an den Spuren sehen, was da im Garten nachts so los ist.
Blick auf meine Obst- und Gemüseecke in der Küche. Momentan gerade wenig los. Normalerweise türmt es sich mehr und breitet sich noch beidseitig aus.
Küchenhack: Ich habe mich ewig über die Klebeetiketten für Tiefkühldosen geärgert. Sind echt teuer und fallen ab oder sind zu klein oder so beschichtet, dass kein Kuli drauf schreibt. In der Not und weil mein Mann wieder mal Werkstattsachen in der Küche liegen ließ, in dem Fall Malerkrepp- oder Malerklebeband und einen Permanentmarker, habe ich das zum Beschriften meiner Dose vorm Einfrieren verwendet. Und ich war total begeistert, wie gut das klappte. Ich brauch keine Schere und kann so viel Band kleben wie ich brauche. Und es ist billig und hat fast jeder zuhause. Kreppband und Marker blieben gleich in meiner Küchenlade. Ich beschrifte jetzt auch Sachen, wo man eh weiß was drinnen ist :)

A retrospect of January:

January started as always with a New Year's walk in the snow, with sunny weather and icy cold.
The cold didn't stop my husband from kicking off barbecue season. Although, I have to say, it's always barbecue season at our house.

I've made two new hats for myself. I apparently can't get enough of knitting hats.
One of my daughter's Christmas presents was an ABBA tribute show, and we got to go along. The show was simply fantastic, and we had a wonderful time.
My orchids in the vase are blooming so beautifully on the windowsill right now.
Either a deer visits our garden very often, or once a whole herd was here. You can see the tracks in the snow, which tell you what goes on in my yard at night.
A view of my fruit and vegetable corner in the kitchen. Not much going on at the moment. Normally, it's piled up more and spreads out on both sides.
Kitchen hack: I've been annoyed for ages about the adhesive labels for freezer containers. They're really expensive and either fall off, are too small, or have a coating that makes them unusable with a ballpoint pen. In a pinch, and because my husband had once again left workshop supplies in the kitchen—in this case, masking tape and a permanent marker—I used them to label my container before freezing it. And I was absolutely amazed at how well it worked. I don't need scissors and can stick on as much tape as I need. Plus, it's cheap and almost everyone has it at home. The masking tape and marker stayed put in my kitchen drawer. Now I even label things where you already know what's inside :)
