If you are using PHP 5.1.6 please notice:

The preinstalled Version of phpMyAdmin of MAMP/MAMP PRO needs min. PHP 5.2. This means it is possible that you have to install an older version of phpMyAdmin yourself - if needed.
The PHP function iconv() does not work. This problem was solved with PHP 5.2.1 and higher. As a workaround libiconv() can be used instead.

How to update MAMP PRO 1.x to MAMP PRO 2.x

1. Download MAMP PRO 2.0 here: http://www.mamp.info/en/downloads/index.html
2. Backup your old MAMP and MAMP PRO data (just for security reasons)
3. Open the Installer and follow the instructions.

You don´t have to remove your old version of MAMP & MAMP PRO. But as always, we would suggest to backup both.
If everything goes well, your projects and preferences will automatically be restored by the installer of MAMP PRO 2.0.

MAMP and IPv6

We are getting lots of questions regarding MAMP / MAMP PRO and IPv6.
Does it work? Yes it does!

Mac OS X supports IPv6 since 10.2, based on KAME. Since 10.3 it is possible to configure IPv6 using the GUI.

Testing Postfix and MAMP with ISP

If you want to send emails with MAMP PRO you have to configure Postfix. You can do that by choosing Server -> Postfix. Although you do not have to do lots of configuration work there are some issues you have to know. Some ISPs do not allow sending emails via Smart-Hosts, others are limited to their own email addresses.

This is why we want to give you an overview of ISPs including their Postfix configurations. As we don't have access to all providers we are encouraging all MAMP PRO users to help us with this. If you are using MAMP PRO with an ISP not noticed below, feel free to try configuring Postfix. The values provided below may help you to find the working configuration for your ISP.

How to show the Postfix log file of MAMP PRO

In this older post we already showed how to send mail with MAMP PRO. But sometimes things are not working like they should. This can depend on several issues:

Faulty configuration
Dispatcher ISP denies to send the email
Recipient ISP denies reception of the email

If you want to figure out why things are not working you can have a look at the log files. Every action by Postfix will be logged to "/private/var/log/mail.log". The "private" folder is invisible and can be found under the root directory of your hard drive.

The most comfortable way to show the log file is using the Console.app.

Open Console.app
Choose View -> Show Log List
Open the folder "FILES" in the Log List
Open the folder "/private/var/log"
Click the mail.log entry in the Log List
On the right side of the window you can see the content of the Postfix log file.

If you prefer the use of the terminal just follow these steps:

Open the Terminal.app (Applications/Utilities)
Enter the following prompt and hit Enter

tail -f /private/var/log/mail.log
You can now read the Postfix log file within the Terminal. The log file keeps updating as new entries apply.
Press "Ctrl + c" to stop the process

If you want to open the Postfix log file with a text editor, you have to make the file visible:

Open the Terminal.app (Applications/Utilities)
Enter the following and hit Enter

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -boolean true
Restart the Finder by enter the following and hit Enter

Killall Finder
Open the file "/private/var/log/mail.log" with your editor.

No matter which way you are choosing, you always get important information about Postfix. If you find the value "status=sent" your email was sent successfully. If you find the value "status=deferred" your email was not sent. The reasons for this can be versatile and it would be to much to cover them up at this place.

How to set the MySQL Default Storage Engine with MAMP

The MySQL server of MAMP and MAMP PRO uses the Default Storage Engine MyISAM. If you want to change this, you have to change the configuration file of the MySQL server. With this tutorial we want to show you how to manage this. As Default Storage Engine we are using InnoDB.

MAMP:

Stop the MAMP Server if it is running.
Use a texteditor to create a file named "my.cnf" and save it to the "/Applications/MAMP/conf/" folder.
Add the following lines into the file:

[mysqld]
default-storage-engine = InnoDB
Save the file and close your editor.
Start the MAMP servers.

MAMP PRO:

Start MAMP PRO.
Stop the MAMP PRO server if it is running.
Select File -> Edit Template -> MySQL my.cnf
An editor window appears.
If a warning message appears confirm with OK.
Find the section "[mysqld]"
Beneath the last line of this section add this line:

default-storage-engine = InnoDB
The section "[mysqld]" now looks like this:
Save (Apple + S) all changes made on "my.cnf"
Close the editor window (Apple + W)
Start the MAMP PRO servers.

How-to check if the modifications succeeded. Servers of MAMP / MAMP PRO must be running.

Open Terminal (Applications/Utilities)
Enter the following line into the terminal and hit Enter:

/Applications/MAMP/Library/bin/mysql --host=localhost -uroot -proot
Enter the following line into the MySQL prompt and hit Enter:

USE information_schema;
Enter the following line into the MySQL prompt and hit Enter:

SELECT * FROM engines;
A table with the storage Engines of MySQL will show up. Inside the Support column "InnoDB" now has the value "DEFAULT". InnoDB now is the default Storage Engine of the MySQL Server.
Enter the following line into the MySQL prompt and hit Enter:

exit;

If you want to hide the MAMP or MAMP PRO icon from your dock after you opened the application you can follow this little tutorial.

Note:

You'll need the Poperty List Editor which is part of the Mac OS X SDK and can be found in the directory "/Developer/applications Utilities/".
You will loose all modifications after an update of MAMP or MAMP PRO.
You want reach MAMP and MAMP PRO with Command + Tab any longer. Use Exposé instead.

MAMP:

Quit MAMP if it's running.
Open the directory "/Applications/MAMP".
Right click on Mamp.app
Choose "Show Package Contents".
A new window will pop up: "Contents"
Double click on Contents.
Open info.plist with the Property Editor
Add a new entry to the list - therefore choose either "Edit -> Add Item" or click on the "Add Item" icon
Enter "LSUIElement" (without quotes) into the "Key" column and hit Enter. Your entry will be changed into "Application is agent (UIElement)" automatically.
In the column "value" activate the checkbox.
Save and close the file.
Close "Property List Editor".

MAMP PRO:

Quit MAMP if it's running.
Open the directory "/Applications/MAMP PRO 1.8.4" (Version number may be different)
Right click on Mamp.app
Choose "Show Package Contents"
A new window will pop up: "Contents"
Double click on Contents.
Open info.plist with the Property Editor
Add a new entry to the list - therefore choose either "Edit -> Add Item" or click on the "Add Item" icon.
Enter "LSUIElement" (without quotes) into the "Key" column and hit Enter. Your entry will be changed into "Application is agent (UIElement)" automatically.
In the column "value" activate the checkbox.
Save and close the file.
Close "Property List Editor"

Now there is no MAMP or MAMP PRO icon in you dock anymore.
