Management Trainee Programme & Summer Internships for Masters students

Summer Internships:

• Internships are available to students in the final year of Masters Programmes (MA, MS, MBA)
• Relevant educational fields include Management, Marketing, Finance, HR, Engineering (Mechanical, Electronics, Electrical, Civil, Chemical) etc.
• Students with CGPA of 3.0 and above are considered
• Students are generally provided project based assignments. At the end of internship period, they are required to submit a report
• 6 weeks internships are offered at our Head Office (in Lahore) or any of our fertilizer plants (in Sadiqabad and Multan)
• Internship generally starts in June every year. We welcome applications from April. Opportunity is provided on first come first served basis.
• A nominal stipend is paid to the interns
• Certificates are issued to the students who successfully complete internship
• Candidates who perform exceptionally well during internship are given priority at the time of induction as Management Trainee. Although it does not confirm their appointment as Management Trainee.

Management Trainee Programme:

• Open to students who have recently completed their Master’s Degree (MA, MS, MBA) for our MTO Programme (students who are expected to complete this year may also apply)

1)       Selection on merit!

Many employers look for the best candidate for the role and are open to international applicants – recognising the diverse experience and skills base that they can bring. Equality legislation also supports this in the UK where employers are encouraged to accept applications from all applicants and only consider “right to work” at the offer stage. You will regularly meet graduate employers who are keen to hire a diverse workforce. What happens, though, is that immigration legislation sometimes gets in the way – not all firms can hire international candidates so easily.

2)      Beyond PSW – Tier 2

For current students (who do not make the April 2012 deadline for the post-study work visa), working after graduation in the UK currently requires a tier 2 visa sponsored by an employer. There are minimum requirements (firm is on the sponsor register, minimum salaries apply, the job is defined as a graduate position by UKBA) and the firm currently has to get through a labour market test for the role. If you are applying to positions where the salary is below the minimum for that career area, or the firm is not a registered sponsor then it can be difficult. Firms can apply to get on the register, but it can take time and there is no waiver on the salary front. 3)      The labour market test

How do firms manage this? With graduate recruitment, we have seen a number of firms who seem to have no problem sponsoring – there are high intakes, specific technical skill requirements, perhaps a shortage of good applicants, or a need for international languages. Investment banks, financial service firms, law firms, engineering firms and construction firms have all been known to sponsor.

Positions where “any degree discipline” applies, however, intake is small (1 or 2 positions at a time”) and interest is high – much less sponsoring is seen (examples include perhaps marketing and HR positions). There are no hard and fast rules – it varies from firm to firm, but this is an indication. There are firms who face additional complications with national security clearance or nationality requirements that can affect their ability to sponsor easily too.

4)      What is changing?

One of the biggest challenges has been the labour market test. From April 2012 it is expected that the government will allow organisations to by-pass the labour market test if hiring international graduates from UK study. There will still be minimum salary requirements (which for some career areas will be a challenge) but overall, this is welcome news. 5)      How to manage the situation

The best advice is to gain a good understanding of work visa legislation in the UK, know how to explain it effectively to uncertain recruiters and follow any changes. This also allows you to make a more informed view as to how it affects your career area, which employers to target and understand any hurdles.

Asking good questions is also key. Don’t ask “do you accept applications from international students” (the answer is most likely to be yes!)… but perhaps ask “are you able to sponsor under tier 2?” “have you ever sponsored a tier 2 visa for this role”, “have you heard about the planned new visa changes for April, 2012?” and  “are you on the sponsor register?”… these answers are more likely to be useful to you.

In theory, all firms should accept and consider your application through to selection – and then consider the visa status issue. However, in reality, is this practical? There are firms who do seem to select out international applicants early if they feel it will be difficult to sponsor them. Is this legal? (possibly not – it is yet to be fully tested in law)… but then the question is, what is the alternative? – do you want to get to the end of a selection process, be offered a job and then told there is no way to sponsor you? (it is a tough call for both students and firms). When I speak to students, they often tell me they just want transparency and to be able to make an informed choice about applying. Asking the right questions may help you to do this.

6)      Are visas the biggest hurdle?

Despite what can be a tough challenge regarding visas, it is also important not just to focus on work visas as the major barrier to UK opportunities. Job hunting success can also depend upon application strategies and an approach that fits the particular UK job market, too. Firms do hire differently across countries and looking good on paper can make a difference. Similarly, some career areas in the UK, as with many other countries, are harder to break into and require different strategies. Taking advice on technique can also help.

7)      Plan B!

Having considered all of the above, the ultimate focus should also be – “what is plan B?” Relying on a UK position is a risky strategy for anyone – there are no guarantees! Keeping up to date with the job market at home or in another country is essential.
