iPad Air

As you might know, I'm an avid Android user and recently switched to iPhone to try and feel iOS. Still can't convincingly say iPhone is better, otherwise for Camera. For day-to-day usages, Android is better and offers more.

It's same time last year I got my Nexus 7 32GB 3G. In fact, when I was about to buy Nexus 7, my first choice was iPad. But I let it go and purchased Nexus 7 instead for cost and portability. Having used it for an year now I feel the screen is too small for my convenience. It's definitely portable and pocket-able in small bags, but the browsing and reading experience wasn't that great because of smaller screen size.

I've been planning to buy iPad for quite some time. I tried iPad mini first to see if 8" is good enough, but I still felt little cramped there. None of 10" Android tablets felt right. Nexus 10 is not available in India and is anyway long due for upgrade. Samsung Galaxy 10.1 2014 was another choice, but reviews have been mixed and choppy performance is one common problem cited everywhere. So I finally decided to go for iPad Air and purchased 32GB WiFi model on a Black Friday sale with $60 offer. I waited for 5 generations to get my first iPad and I feel I've got the right one.

I've been playing with iPad for a week now. Since I've not had previous generations of iPad, I can't comment on its lightness. It still feels hefty, but felt the weight is evenly spread across if held in two hands. I'm really impressed with increased screen size with which I can read books and browse without much scrolling or zooming. The performance is top-notch, thanks to 64-bit A7 processor. Battery life is excellent as usual. The only compliant is about operating files across various apps and iTunes.

After using iPad, my Nexus 7 feels ever so cramped now. I've not spent much time with nexus in past week I had my iPad. When I use only Nexus 7, I don't feel the need for iPad. But when its other way, it's not the same. More you use the iPad, you can't go back to any other device!

I'm planning to use Nexus 7 as WiFi hotspot with 3G plan on travel. With SMS tether installed, I've configured WhatsApp too. So it would make a perfect travel companion where I can't take my iPad. With two of the best tablets from two leading mobile OS, I guess I'm living a cutting edge life!

iPad vs Nexus 7

I've been using Nexus 7 32GB 3G for close to 7 months. Its the least expensive Android tablet available today. I didn't want to mention it as cheap tablet since it feels and functions like premium tablet, though I may not testify this with a drop test where I'm certain it wouldn't pass. But the in hand feel is good and its the best portable Android tablet you can buy.

As with all Android devices, the openness is its limitation. iOS buttery smooth experience and battery life is largely attributed to Apple's rigorous quality control and restricted ecosystem.I've been getting good usage battery life with nexus 7, but the standby time was poor. A fully charged battery goes dead in couple of days with no usage. I had to root and install apps like Deep sleep battery saver, Greenify to save battery in standby mode, whereas iPad is literally dead once you switch off the display and gives exceptional standby battery life.With these apps in I got great battery life with my Nexus 7 in the recent trip. Starting with 100%, roaming and on 3G with medium usage, I returned after 3 days with 48% still left.

In my opinion, 7 inch is the best size for a portable tablet, but the nexus 7 software navigation keys occupy useful space from tablet. I use hide soft keys to hide software navigation keys and get more real estate from Nexus 7 display. Though I wish nexus 7 was little wider than being taller. 10 inch iPad is the perfect size to read books and surf on internet on the couch. It's 4:3 ratio also enables it to use in portrait and landscape mode without much difference. But I felt it's heavier to carry around outside.

I always smile when Apple claim iOS as most advanced mobile OS when you can't transfer files without iTunes, no Bluetooth transfer, keyboard with no gesture typing, etc., But when you compare my experience to get better battery life and app management in nexus 7, most people will be happy to live with iPad's battery life and its iOS limitations than to fiddle around the OS to get better out if it. I'm a developer and I would be happy to dig more with any device I'm using, but for normal users iOS provides complete experience without having to know technically more and that's where iOS stands out being user friendly OS and more enjoyable.

iPhone - a month later and iOS7

Have been using iPhone for more than a month now. It's been a mixed-bag so far.

Things I like:

Safari and Reader mode.
Phone and message interface (clean and simple)
Camera
Battery life

Things I dislike:

App store interface and experience in general is sub par and very slow to search and update.
Apps are not updating properly and I had to retry multiple times.
Keyboard - I now know how much I liked gesture typing in Android.
Settings - too many steps.
iTunes. Used once to upload songs and haven't opened again ever since.

The difference between Apple as a product company and Google as internet company really shows in the way Apple manufactures hardware and Google creates cloud-based software.

Apple's cloud based services like App store, Maps and iCloud always has been a sub-par experience and nowhere near Google's offering. And not to forget Apple Store going down to add new products??? I mean, we live in 2013 and company which is regarded as best can't update their website without taking it down!!

In Google IO and in D11, Google executives were clear and stated, they see iOS users as a potential Google user too. Most of Google made apps in Android is available in iOS or in the pipeline. Apple has no such interest in other platforms, though Tim cook said in D11 things might change. Google has placed its interests quite clear in iOS and is finding a way to win the war within. Google Sees Payoff From Its iPhone Strategy

iOS7 was announced yesterday. Apart from looking like a MIUI-themed Android, I don't see much in the offering. Android status bar settings is coming in iOS7 in name of Control center. Chrome's tile view of open tabs and full screen mode comes to Safari. Like these, most of the features they introduced are available in Android for so long. Let's see how the overall experience improves with these changes.

Tim cook's view of android fragmentation is an exaggeration in my opinion. Fragmentation is a problem in both Android and iOS. It's not about software, it's old hardware limiting the software.

If you see these basic things like multitasking, settings toggle, notification is available from Gingerbread, means all these things are available in almost all Android phones. With iPhone 3GS and Apple iPad 1 neglected for iOS7 upgrade, Apple is fragmenting those users with such simple features. Though I agree letting the operators and phone makers install bloatwares in Android is limiting the overall experience, recent trend of Google flavored GS4, HTC One and rumored Xperia Z is a welcome change.

I really like the way Google is separating key features from Android core and releasing as apps like Google Calendar, Maps, GMail, Search and Google keyboard recently so that they can focus on these key areas separately and continuously improve without waiting for it to introduce in major release in yearly conferences like Google IO.

My first android phone was LG Optimus 2x, happens to be world's first dual-core phone too. Was I happy with the purchase? I think the way the Android and smartphones are moving along, whenever you buy a phone, the next one comes out better in few months time. It'll be always like 'only if I had waited for few more months' on every mobile purchase.

Optimus 2x was stuck in Gingerbread for so long because LG didn't provide the ICS upgrade in time. But once the ICS sources and update was out in November 2012, many developers were able to build custom ROMs. Now I've got CM 10.1 (Jelly Bean 4.2.2) on my 2x which is on par with latest and greatest android phones. The phone is with latest software and faster than ever before. I couldn't be happier.

When my brother in law came from US for a short visit to India last week, he brought phones to us, specifically Nexus 4 and iPhone 4S to mention. The only iOS device in our home thus far is my sister's iPod touch. I've occasionally played with iPod touch to use Flipboard (when it was only available in iOS). I personally have many Android devices in varying sizes (5" Galaxy Player, Nexus 7, 4" Optimus 2x). So I had a choice, I can choose either Nexus 4 or iPhone.

Nexus 4 is fast, very good phone, well worth the money. But I always wanted to try iOS. So I chose to try iPhone.

First thing to notice on iPhone is the responsive UI. No matter how many apps I had opened earlier, when I switch apps, the phone always remained responsive. Optimus 2x with Jelly bean is now as good as iPhone 4S, but iPhone still feels more responsive. May be it's their memory and background app management, I've seen iPhone 4S with 512MB RAM is as responsive as Nexus 4 with 2GB RAM.

And Camera, my 8MP Optimus 2x was no slouch either and takes crisp photos. But iPhone 4S camera is faster and better on color and accuracy. Overall better camera experience compared to my 2x.

But iPhone is not without shortcomings, simple things I was able to do in Android was not available in iPhone, namely.

Widgets and Home screen customization
Easy File transfer (I don't like to use a software to transfer files)
Notification drawer switches (WiFi on/off, etc.,)
Contacts and SMS transfer.
Apps (You might wonder when I say this, but most of popular apps are avaiable in free and paid version in Android. But in iOS, mostly you have to purchase, purchase,...)

I always felt Android is a better choice for phones and iPad is my tablet choice. iOS is better experienced on a bigger screen than a smaller one. My current tablet, Nexus 7 is portable and easily affordable, but browsing web and reading is best enjoyed on iPad because of form factor, retina display and iOS experience.

I don't know whether I'll continue to use iPhone for longer. Let's see what Google has in Google-IO conference this week in Android 4.3 and Apple WWDC in June to see what's in store on iOS 7.

Be it Nexus 4 or iPhone 4S, guess I'm left with good choices either way ;-)

நான் திரையரங்கில் பார்த்த மிஷ்கினின் ஒரே படம், அஞ்சாதே. யுத்தம் செய் திரையரங்கில் பார்க்க முடியாததில் இப்போது வருத்தம் தான்.

பார்க்க விரும்பவில்லை என்றே சொல்லலாம், காரணம் நந்தலாலா (என் பார்வையில் மிஷ்கினின் மோசமான படம்) மற்றும் யுத்தம் செய் 'Memories of Murder' படத்தின் தழுவல் என்ற வதந்தி.

படத்தின் ஆரம்பக் காட்சி நியூ இயர் கொண்டாத்ததை இவ்வளவு சீரியஸ் இசையுடன் பார்த்ததில்லை. அப்போதே படம் கொஞ்சம் வித்தியாசப்படத் தொடங்கியது. அதன் பிறகு வரும் எதார்த்தமான சேரனின் விசாரணை, இண்டர்வல் சண்டை, கொலைகளை கட்டவிழ்க்கும் காட்சியமைப்பு ரசிக்கும்படி இருந்தன.

அஞ்சாதே என் நினைவுக்கு திரையரங்கில் கை தட்டல்களோடு பார்த்த இரண்டாவது படம். முதல் படம் 'அண்ணாமலை' (அந்த சவால் காட்சிக்கு கைத்தட்டாமல் எவனாவது இருப்பானா?) இப்படத்தை அஞ்சாதே-2 என்றே சொல்லலாம். இசை, ஒளிப்பதிவு என எல்லாம் Typical Myshkin making.

கண்டிப்பாக இந்த படத்தில் பல நேரத்தில் திரையரங்கில் கைதட்டல்கள் கிடைத்திருக்கும், உ.தா, சேரன் கேரம்போர்டு கொண்டு ஒரு ரவுடியை அடித்து விசாரிப்பது, ஒரு சாட்சி வீட்டில் சேரன் கெஞ்சுவதும் கான்ஸ்டபிள் மிரட்டுவதும், இண்டர்வல் சண்டைக்காட்சி, இறுதிக் காட்சி என நிறைய காட்சிகள் இருந்திருக்கக்கூடும்.

மொத்தத்தில் மீண்டும் ஒரு சிறப்பான படத்தைக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறார் மிஷ்கின். நந்தலாலா போன்று மற்ற படங்களை அப்படியே இன்ஸ்பிரேஷன் என்று காப்பியடிப்பதை விட இம்மாதிரியான படங்கள் கொடுங்கள்.

சினிமா, பயணம்

சென்ற வாரம் சில படங்களை பார்க்க நேர்ந்தது. குறிப்பிட வேண்டியவை, மந்திரப் புன்னகை, சோசியல் நெட்வொர்க் மற்றும் கேட்பிஷ்.

கரு. பழனியப்பன் படங்கள் எப்போதும் குடும்பப் பாங்கான படங்களாக இருக்கும். அவரது முந்தைய படங்களான பார்த்திபன் கனவு, பிரிவோம் சந்திப்போம் ஒவ்வொரு முறையும் டி.வி.யில் திரையிடும் போது குடும்பத்தோடு பார்த்திருக்கிறேன். ஆனால் இந்த படம் கண்டிப்பாக குடும்பத்துடன் பார்க்க முடியாது என்று நினைக்கிறேன், காரணம் ஹீரோவின் கதாபாத்திரமும் அவன் பேசும் வசனங்களும். ஆனால் இந்த படம் பிடிக்கக் காரணமும் வசனங்களே. நறுக் வசனங்கள்! ரொம்ப நல்ல படமா என்றால் இல்லை, ஆனால் ஒரு முறை பார்க்கலாம்.

மற்ற இரு படங்களும் பேஸ்புக் பற்றியது. முன்னது பேஸ்புக் உருவான கதை மற்றொன்று பேஸ்புக்கினால் வரக்கூடிய பிரச்சனை குறித்தது. இரண்டுமே நன்றாக இருந்தது. குறிப்பாக சோசியல் நெட்வொர்க்கில் ஜுகேர்பெர்க் ஆக நடித்தவர் சிறப்பாக செய்துள்ளார்.

சொல்லாமல் விட்ட படங்கள் சிறுத்தை, காவலன். Obviously, nothing much to mention about those!

சித்தி பெண் திருமணத்திற்காக மதுரை சென்று வந்தோம். ரெயில் பயணம் எப்போதும் இனிமையானது, காரணம் சிறு வயது ஞாபகங்கள் பயணம் முழுவதும் நினைவுக்கு வருவது. நீண்ட இடைவேளைக்குப் பிறகு பல சொந்தங்களை காண முடிந்தது சந்தோசமாக இருந்தது. திருமணம் எளிமையாக நடந்தது. சிறு சிறு இடையூறுகள் ஆங்காங்கே இருந்தாலும், கடைசியில் All is Well :)

டென்னிஸ்

சிறு வயதில் நாங்கள் முதலில் இருந்த சம்பத் நகர் வீதியில் சக்தி யுவராஜ் என்ற நண்பன் (ஒரே கல்லூரி கூட, ஆனால் வெவ்வேறு துறை) சுவற்றில் டென்னிஸ் ப்ராக்டிஸ் செய்வதைப் பார்த்திருக்கிறேன். அவனிடம் அந்த மட்டையை சில முறை வாங்கிப் பார்த்திருக்கிறேன். டென்னிஸ் நான் விளையாடியது அவ்வளவு தான்.

டென்னிஸ் தீவிரமாக பார்க்க ஆரம்பித்தது கல்லூரிக்குப் பிறகு தான். அதற்கு முன்பு சிறு வயதில் சில முறை ஸ்டெபி கிராப், சாம்ப்ராஸ் விம்பிள்டன் விளையாடும் போது டி.வி.யில் பார்த்திருக்கிறேன். டென்னிஸின் முழு விதிமுறைகள் கூட அப்போது தெரியாது. பிறகு மெல்ல மெல்ல டென்னிஸ் பார்த்துக் கற்றுக்கொண்டேன்.

டென்னிஸில் எனக்குப் பிடித்த வீரர் பெடரர்.

பெடரர்-நடால் ரஜினி-கமல் மாதிரி, இருவரும் சிறந்தவர்கள் என்றாலும் ஒருவரை மட்டுமே நமக்கு அதிகம் பிடிக்கும். எனக்கு பெடரரை பிடிக்கும். பெடரர் ஆட்டம் அபாரமாகவும், அமைதியாகவும் இருக்கும். நடால் ஆட்டம் அதிரடியாகவும், ஆக்ரோஷமாகவும் இருக்கும்.

பெடரர் சிறு வயதில் மிகவும் கோபப்படுவார் என்று படித்திருக்கிறேன்.
பிறகு அவர் மாறியது, சிறப்பாக விளையாண்டு சாம்ப்ராஸ் சாதனையை முறியடித்தது எல்லோருக்கும் தெரியும். எவ்வளவு இக்கட்டான சூழ்நிலையிலும் மிகவும் அமைதியாகவும் பதற்றம் இல்லாமலும் விளையாடுவார்.

டென்னிஸ் விளையாட்டின் சிறப்பே கடைசி புள்ளி வரை வெற்றி எந்தப் பக்கம் என்று கூற முடியாதது தான். எந்த நேரமும் மிகவும் பின்தங்கிய நிலையில் இருந்து வெற்றி பெற வாய்ப்பு இருக்கிறது.

வருடத்தில் நடக்கும் நான்கு கிராண்ட் ஸ்லாம் போட்டிகளில் எனக்கு மிகவும் பிடித்தது ஆஸ்திரேலியா மற்றும் விம்பிள்டன். இதற்கு காரணம் அது ஒளிபரப்பாகும் நேரம் நம் நேரத்திற்குச் சரியானதாக இருக்கும். பிரெஞ்சு ஒபெனில் அதிகம் ஆங்கில வர்ணனையாளர் இல்லாததாலும், யு.எஸ் ஓபன் நேர வித்தியாசம் என்பதாலும் அதிகம் நான் பார்த்ததில்லை.

தற்போது ஆஸ்திரேலியா ஓபன் நடைபெற்றுக் கொண்டிருக்கிறது. முதல் சுற்றிலேயே நமது சானியா, சோம்தேவ் இருவரும் வெளியேறிவிட்டனர். ஆனால் சானியா சிறப்பாக விளையாடினார். அவர் தோற்றது ஜஸ்டின் ஹெனினிடம். ஹெனின் பல முறை கிராண்ட் ஸ்லாம் வென்றவர். பெண்களின் பெடரர் என்று சொல்லுமளவிற்கு சிறந்த ஆட்டம் கொண்டவர். அவரிடம் சானியா போராடித் தான் தோற்றார்.

இன்று நடந்த நல்பேன்டியன்-ஹிவிட் போட்டியும் அபாரமாக இருந்தது. முதல் சுற்றிலேயே இந்த அளவு போட்டி என்றால் இன்னும் போகப் போக இன்னும் விறுவிறுப்பாக இருக்கும் என்று நம்பலாம்.

புத்தக வாசிப்பும் நேசிப்பும்

எனக்கு புத்தகம் படிக்கிறது பிடிக்கும். ஏன் என்று கேட்டால் சரியாக பதில் சொல்ல முடியவில்லை, பிடித்திருக்கிறது... சிறு வயதில் இருந்தே தமிழ் மீது ஆர்வம். அதற்கு முக்கிய காரணம் எனது ஆசிரியை செண்பகவள்ளி. என் கையெழுத்து நன்றாக இருக்கும், அதனால் நான் என்ன எழுதினாலும் நன்றாக மார்க் போடுவார்கள். அதற்காக நான் அதை தவறாக பயன்படுத்தியதில்லை. 10வது மற்றும் +2வில் தமிழில் 90 விழுக்காடு மதிப்பெண் பெற்றேன். பத்தி பத்தியாக எழுதாமல், சரக்கு முக்கால் பங்கு என்றால் ப்ரசென்டேசன் மீதி.. அப்போதெல்லாம் சிறுவர் மலரில் சிறுவர்கள் கையால் எழுதிய மடல்கள் பிரசுரம் ஆகும். அதற்கு எழுதி அனுப்பச் சொல்லுவார்கள், நான் அனுப்பியதே இல்லை..

எனது முதல் வாசிப்பு சிறுவர் மலர் தான்.. வெள்ளி எப்போது வரும் என்றளவுக்கு தீவிர வாசகன். வீட்டில் தங்கை, அக்காவுடன் சண்டையெல்லாம் நடந்ததுண்டு. எக்ஸ்ரே கண், அசோக் துப்பரிகிறான், பலமுக மன்னன ஜோ போன்ற பலர் எனக்கு நண்பர்களாக இருந்தார்கள்.. அதன் பிறகு ரம்யா கிருஷ்ணனை ராமையா கிருஷ்ணன் என்று படித்ததிலிருந்து ஆரம்பித்தது குமுதம், ஆனந்த விகடன் வாசிப்பு.. பருவ வயதில் வார மலர் நடுபக்கம், சினிமா துணுக்கு செய்தகள் தான் எனது பேவரைட் ;-).. அதன் பிறகு மெல்ல மெல்ல வார இதழ்களில் வரும் சிறுகதைகள், தொடர்கள், கேள்வி பதில் என்று படிக்க ஆரம்பித்தேன்.. அதன் பிறகு ராஜேஷ் குமார் க்ரைம் நாவல்கள் சிலவென்று என் வாசிப்பு திசை தெரியாமல் போய்க்கொண்டிருந்தது.

எனக்கு எளிமையான வார்த்தை உபயோகங்களே பிடிக்கும். அதனால் தான் சுஜாதா என்னோட ஆல்-டைம் பேவரைட். தற்போது எஸ்.ரா கூட பிடித்திருக்கிறது. நவீன இலக்கியம் படிக்கலாம் என்று நான் வாங்கிய ஜெயமோகனின் 'ஏழாம் உலகம்' சில பக்கங்களுக்குப் பின் படிக்கவே இல்லை... செல்வராகவனின் ஆயிரத்தில் ஒருவன் செகண்ட் ஹாப் பார்த்த மாதிரி இருந்தது... இது தமிழ் தானா என்ற சந்தேகமும் வந்தது. அதன் பிறகு ஜெயமோகன் புத்தகங்கள் வாங்கவேயில்லை. யாராவது இலவசமாக அவரது புத்தகங்கள் கொடுத்தால் மட்டுமே படிப்பதாய் உள்ளேன். ஒரு வேளை முதலாக அந்த புத்தகம் படிக்க நினைத்தது தவறானதாக இருக்கலாம்...

வாசிப்பு பழக்கம் என் அம்மாவிடமிருந்து தான் வந்துள்ளது என நினைக்கிறேன். அம்மாவும் பாட்டியும் போட்டி போட்டுக் கொண்டு படிப்பார்களாம் . நான் ஏதாவது பழைய புத்தகங்களை குறிப்பிட்டால் பெரும்பாலும் அதைப்பற்றி ஒரு அபிப்பிராயம் வைத்திருப்பார். சமீபமாக நான் புத்தகம் வாங்கும் போது அவர்களின் தேர்வும் சிலது இருக்கும். பெரும்பாலும் அது விகடனில் தொடராக வந்ததோ, இல்லை படிக்காமல் விட்ட பழைய புத்தகங்களாக இருக்கும்.

எல்லா புத்தகங்களையும் ஒரு சேர படிக்க முடியாது. ஒவ்வொரு புத்தகமும் அதற்கான நேரம் வரும் போதுதான் படிக்கிறேன். சில சமயம் ஒரே நாளில் மூன்று புத்தகங்கள் வரை படிப்பேன். சில சமயம் பல மாதங்கள் எதையும் படிப்பதில்லை.. பல புத்தகங்களை முழுவதும் படித்ததில்லை.. இன்னும் பல வாங்கியதோடு சரி, படிக்கவேயில்லை. ஒவ்வொரு புத்தகமும் ஒவ்வொரு மாதிரி.. நண்பர்கள் என்றாலே அப்படித்தானே :)

கடந்த ரெண்டு வருஷமா நான் எழுதின பதிவுகள் பெரும்பாலும் எல்லாமே புத்தக கண்காட்சி பற்றியது தான். என்ன வாங்கனும்னு ஒரு பதிவு, வாங்கிட்டு வந்த பிறகு என்ன வாங்குனேன்னு ஒன்னு.

சரி இந்த வருஷம் உறுதிமொழியா தொடர்ந்து எழுதலாம்னு பார்த்தா, சமீபத்தில் எழுதுனதை பார்த்து நண்பன் தன் பெயரை எடுக்கச் சொல்லி ஒரே ரகளை.. கேட்டால் எனக்கு பப்ளிசிட்டி வேனாங்குறான். தினசரி நடக்குற சுவாரஸ்யங்களை பெயர் சொல்லாமல் எப்படி எழுதுவது? ஒவ்வொரு தடவையும் கவர் ஸ்டோரியில் வருகிற மாதிரி 'பெயர் மாற்றப்பட்டுள்ளது' ன்னா எழுத முடியும்?

எழுதுறவன் எந்த லெவல்-ல இருந்தாலும் இந்த நாட்டுல எழுத்துச் சுதந்திரம் மட்டும் இல்லைன்னு தெரிஞ்சுபோச்சு... ;-)

சென்னை புத்தக கண்காட்சி - பகுதி 2

சென்னை பயணம் குறித்த பதிவை நேற்று எழுதியிருந்தேன். சனி முழுவதும் ஓய்வெடுத்த பிறகு கொஞ்சம் தெம்பாக இருந்தது. ஐபிஎல் ஏலம் இருந்ததால் நன்றாக பொழுது கழிந்தது.

ஞாயிறு காலையில் சாப்பிடும்போது தமிழ் வந்திருந்தான். அவன் சனியன்றே கண்காட்சிக்கு சென்று விட்டான். அவனிடம் முக்கியமான புத்தகங்கள் என்ன வாங்கினான் என்று தெரிந்து கொண்டேன். நான் இலக்கிய புத்தங்கள் அதிகம் படிப்பதில்லை, அவனுக்கு அதில் ஆர்வம் அதிகம் என நினைக்கிறேன்.

காலை பதினோரு மணி வாக்கில் புத்தக கண்காட்சிக்கு நண்பன் கதிர் பைக்கில் அழைத்துச் சென்றான். கதிர், கல்லூரி நண்பன். எங்கள் வகுப்பை பொருத்தவரை அவன் (மட்டும்) தான் அதிகம் பதிவு எழுதி வருகிறான். அவன் எழுதுவது ஒரு ஆச்சர்யமே!! கல்லூரியில் இருந்த வரை அவனுக்குள் இப்படி ஒரு திறமை இருக்கும் எனத் தெரியவில்லை, அல்லது கவனிக்கவில்லை என்றே சொல்ல வேண்டும். அவன் எழுதும் கவிதைகளும், நகைச்சுவைகளும் நன்றாக இருக்கும். அவனது வலைப்பூ இங்கே.

புத்தக கண்காட்சி பச்சையப்பா கல்லூரி எதிரே நடக்கிறது என்று தெரியும், ஆனால் வழி தெரியவில்லை. கதிருக்கும் அந்த இடங்கள் பரிச்சயம் இல்லாததால் நுங்கம்பாக்கம் வரை சென்று வழி கேட்டுக்கொள்ளலாம் என்று புறப்பட்டோம். ஒரு வழியாக கண்காட்சிக்கு சென்றடைந்தோம். நல்லவேளையாக வெயிலும் அதிகம் இல்லை. கதிர் கண்காட்சிக்கு வருவது முதல் முறையாம். எண்டர் கவிதைகள் பெயர் காரணம், கவிதை எழுதுவது, கிழக்கு பதிப்பகத்தின் மார்க்கெட்டிங் என்று பேசிக்கொண்டே உள்ளே சென்றோம். சுஜாதா எப்படி இவ்ளோ புத்தகம் எழுதினார், நிறைய எழுத நிறைய படிக்கவேண்டும் போல, ஆனால் கவிதை எழுத அதிகம் கவிதை படிக்கக்கூடாது, நம்மை அறியாமலேயே மற்ற கவிதைகளின் தாக்கம் வெளிப்பட்டுவிடும் என்றான். தன் கவிதைகளை புத்தகமாக வெளியிட வேண்டுமென்றான்.... இப்போதே வாழ்த்துகிறேன்..

நான் குறித்துவைத்த அனைத்து புத்தகங்களையும் வாங்கவில்லை.. அதிகம் தூக்கி செல்ல முடியாதே... ஆன்லைனில் கிடைக்காத புத்தகங்கள், போன தடவை விட்டுப்போனவை மட்டும் வாங்கலாமென முடிவு செய்தேன்.

சுஜாதா கலக்குறார். எங்கு பார்த்தாலும் அவர் புத்தகங்கள் தான். செத்தும் கொடுத்தான்... இம்முறை அவருடைய சிறுகதை/நாவல் புத்தகங்கள் வாங்கவில்லை. நிறைய பதிப்பகங்கள் அவருடைய நூல்களை வெளியிட்டுள்ளதால், விலையில் நிறைய வித்தியாசம். நன்கு ரிசர்ச் செய்த பிறகே வாங்கவேண்டும்.

கிழக்கு, உயிர்மை, விகடனில் வழக்கம் போல நல்ல கூட்டம். எனக்குத் தெரிந்து கிழக்கு மட்டும் தான் நன்றாக மார்க்கெட்டிங் செய்து வருகிறார்கள். அவர்களுடைய எழுத்தாளர்கள் பெரும்பாலானவர்கள் ட்விட்டர், பேஸ்புக் மற்றும் ப்ளாக் போன்றவற்றில் உள்ளனர். மக்களிடம் உரையாடுகிறார்கள். புதிய புத்தகங்களை அறிமுகம் செய்கிறார்கள்.

நக்கீரன் பதிப்பகத்தில் 'நீங்களும் முதல்வராகலம்' வாங்கினேன். நீண்ட நாள் தேடிக்கொண்டிருந்தது. நக்கீரன் பேப்பர் தரத்தில் கவனம் செலுத்த வேண்டும். வார இதழ்கள் எவ்வாறு வேண்டுமானாலும் இருக்கலாம், ஆனால் புத்தகங்கள் கண்டிப்பாக நல்ல பேப்பரில் இருக்க வேண்டும்.

தினத்தந்தி வரலாற்றுச் சுவடுகள், 800 பக்க வண்ண புத்தகம் ரூ. 270. மினிமம் கேரண்டி. கண்டிப்பாக எல்லோரும் வாங்க வேண்டியது.

குறித்துவைத்த பதிப்பகங்கள் தவிர மற்ற ஸ்டால்களை சும்மா ஏறிட்டு பார்த்து நகர்ந்தேன். கண்காட்சி முழுவதும் எனக்காக கதிர் புத்தகங்களை சுமந்து வந்தான். நன்றி கதிர்.. இரண்டு நாட்கள் எனக்கு வேண்டிய உதவிகளை செய்த நண்பன் மனோஜுக்கும் நன்றி..

சென்னை பயணம் ஒருவிதமான ரோலர் கோஸ்டர் பயணம் தான். புத்தக கண்காட்சிக்காக இரண்டு மாதங்களுக்கு முன்பே டிக்கெட் எடுத்துவிட்டேன். எந்த புத்தகம் வாங்குவது என்ற லிஸ்ட்டும் ரெடி. கிளம்பும் வெள்ளியன்று இரவு அலுவலகத்திலிருந்து வீடு வரும்போது சிறு விபத்து. நாய் குறுக்கே வர, வந்த வேகத்தில் நிறுத்த முடியாமல் நாய் மீது மோதி கீழே விழுந்ததில் இரு கைகளிலும் சிராய்ப்பு. ஒரு கால் முட்டியில் அடி. வீட்டிலும் அம்மா இல்லை, அன்று காலை தான் ஈரோடு சென்றார்கள். என்னடா பண்றது என்று வீடு சேர்ந்து டெட்டால் போட்டு கழுவிய பிறகு ஒரு மனதாக சென்னை கிளம்பலாமென்று முடிவு செய்தேன். இருந்தாலும் மனதில் ஒரு கேள்வி. அடிபட்டிருக்கும் நிலையில் சென்னை போகணுமா? சரி அட்லீஸ்ட் பசங்கலாவது இருப்பாங்க, எதாவது வேணும்னா வாங்கி குடுப்பாங்க.. இங்கிருந்தா தனியா இருக்கனும் என்று நினைத்துக் கொண்டு கடவுள் மீது பாரத்தை போட்டு கிளம்பினேன்.

நல்ல வேலையாக ரெயிலில் கீழ் இருக்கை. ஸ்டேஷன் போய் சேர்ந்ததும் ஒரு வட இந்தியரிடம் பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தேன். அவர் தமிழர்கள் ஏன் ஹிந்தி பேசுவதில்லை, தெரிந்து வைத்தால் பயன் என்று தெரிந்த விஷயங்களையே சொல்லிக்கொண்டிருந்தார். இதற்கு காரணம் என்னவென்று கேட்டார். எனக்கு சரியாய் தெரியல, ஆனால் கருணாநிதி ஹிந்தி எதிர்ப்பு போராட்டம் செய்தார், அதனால் இருக்கும் என்றேன். பேச்சுவாக்கில் நமது அ. ராசாவை சூப்பர் ஸ்டார் (ஊழலிலா?) என்று வேறு குறிப்பிட்டார்.

டெல்லியில் கடும் குளிர் ஐந்து டிகிரி தான், அதனால் பல ரெயில்கள் தாமதம் என்றார்.. மேலும் நீங்கள் ஸ்நோ பார்த்ததுண்டா, வட இந்திய வந்ததுண்டா என்றார். நான் சுருக்கமாக டெல்லி சென்றுள்ளேன். ஸ்நோ பார்த்ததுண்டு ஆனால் இந்தியாவில் இல்லை பின்லாந்தில் -22 டிகிரி வரை பார்த்திருக்கிறேன் என்றேன். அதன் பிறகு என்ன காரணமோ அவர் அதிகம் பேசவில்லை. தூங்க சென்று விட்டார்.

காலையில் 4.40 மணிக்கெல்லாம் சென்னை சென்றடைந்தேன். நண்பன் ஸ்டேஷன் வந்து கூட்டிச் சென்றான். நான் பஸ்சில் வர்றேன் என்று கூறியும், அடிபட்டிருக்கு நானே வர்றேன் என்றான். வந்தவுடன் தான் தெரிந்தது அவனுக்கு கியர் வண்டி பழக்கமில்லை என்று. காயம் இருக்கும் வேளையில் அவனுடன் பயணம் செய்வது பேருந்து நெரிசலில் செல்வதை விட அபாயமானது என்று தோன்றியது. சரி, ஆனது ஆச்சு போவோம் என்று கிளம்பினோம். அவனுக்கு clutch control இல்லை, வண்டி சிக்னலில் கியர் மாற்றும்போது சில முறை நின்றது, பழகப் பழக சரிவரும். ஒரு வழியாக வேளச்சேரி ரூமுக்கு வந்தாச்சு. மறுபடியும் ointment தேய்த்துக்கொண்டு தூங்கப்போனேன். சனிக்கிழமை காலை எழுந்ததும் நானும் நண்பனும் டாக்டரிடம் சென்றோம். காயங்கள் சுத்தம் செய்து, ஊசி போட்ட பிறகு சில மாத்திரைகளை எழுதிக்கொடுத்தார். அன்று முழுவதும் ரெஸ்ட் தான். எங்கும் வெளியே செல்லவில்லை.

The Way Home, இந்த படத்தின் அறிமுகம் செழியனின் உலக சினிமா (பாகம் 1 என நினைக்கிறேன்) மூலம் கிடைத்தது. அம்மாவும் சமையல், சீரியல் என ஒரே மாதிரி பார்த்து பார்த்து அலுத்துப்போயிருக்கவே என்னுடன் சேர்ந்து இந்த படத்தைப் பார்த்தார். Subtitle ஆங்கிலம் புரியாமலேயே படத்தின் போக்கை அம்மா நன்றாக புரிந்து கொண்டார். படத்தில் அவ்வளவாக உரையாடல்கள் இல்லை என்றாலும் காட்சியமைப்பில் சொல்ல வருகிற விஷயத்தை உணர்த்திய பாங்கு சிறப்பாக இருந்தது. இந்த படம் பிடிக்க மற்றொரு காரணம் என் தாய் வழி பாட்டி. பேரன்களில் நான் மட்டும் வெளியூரில் இருப்பதால் என் மீது பாட்டிக்கு தனி பாசம் உண்டு. இந்த படம் பார்க்கும்போது பாட்டி வீட்டில் நான் கழித்த என் இளவயது கோடை விடுமுறை ஞாபகங்கள் வந்து சென்றன. ஒரு படம் நம்மை வாழ்வில் முன்னோகியோ அல்லது பின்னோகியோ பயணிக்கச் செய்தால் அது கண்டிப்பாக சிறந்த படமாகத்தான் இருக்கும். அந்த வகையில் இது ஒரு சிறந்த உலக படம் என்பதில் சந்தேகமே இல்லை. கண்டிப்பாக பாருங்கள்.

சென்னை புத்தக கண்காட்சி 2011

இந்த வருடம் சென்னை புத்தக கண்காட்சி ஜனவரி 4 முதல் நடைபெற உள்ளது. சென்ற வருடம் தான் நான் முதல் முறையாக சென்னை கண்காட்சிக்கு சென்றேன். கிட்டத்தட்ட ஐயாயிரம் ரூபாய் வரை புத்தகங்கள் வாங்கினேன் (எல்லாத்தையும் படிச்சியா என்று கேட்க கூடாது). இந்த முறையும் செல்லலாம் என்று முடிவு செய்துள்ளேன். சென்ற முறை தேவையில்லாத நிறைய புத்தகங்கள் அதீத ஆர்வத்தில் வாங்கினேன். இம்முறை அதே தவறை செய்யாமல் பொறுமையாக புத்தகங்களை ஒரு முறை புரட்டிய பிறகே வாங்க வேண்டும்.

bapasi இணையதளத்தில் கண்காட்சி பற்றி இன்று வரை எதுவும் செய்தி இல்லை. கிழக்கு பதிப்பகம் மட்டுமே சிறப்பாக கண்காட்சிக்கு தயார் செய்து வருகிறது. ட்விட்டரிலும் (பாரா, பத்ரி) ப்ளாகிலும் புதிய புத்தகங்களின் அறிமுகத்தை கொடுக்கிறார்கள் . அவர்களின் 2011 நூல் பட்டியல் இங்கே.

Google Updates - Google Shared Stuff

Google has launched a new social link sharing service called Google Shared Stuff. A Blogoscoped forum member has seen the link to this Shared Stuff when he was watching a Google Video... Interesting, how close people watch news related to Google!

"Shared Stuff" lets you share interesting links with your friends and the entire world. You need to drag a bookmarklet to your browser's link bar. A profile page is public and can include information about yourself, a photo, links to your sites. You can select the photo from one of your public Picasa Web Albums.

When you click on the button, a new window pops out and you can choose between posting the page to your profile, emailing it to your contacts or bookmarking the page using services like facebook, del.icio.us or furl.

Google Updates - Google Presentation, Multi-lingual Google Reader and GOOG 411

As usual, Google is making news every day, but this time for launch of Google Presentations. One cool feature I found in Google Presentation is that the presentation can be shared with everyone and any viewer can follow the presenter or take control of the presentation. The preview includes a group chat feature based on Google Talk's gadget that shows the active collaborators and viewers. If all the viewers click on "View presentation", they can watch the presentation at the same time. Google is taking Collaboration to a next level. Thanks Google!

Google Reader has now learned to speak some new languages. Currently, there is support for Japanese and French. I expect more to come sooner. Check out official Google Reader Blog for more. As well as adding new languages, the logo has now lost the “Labs” beaker icon and the interface appears to have gained the same top navigation bar as services like Search, Gmail, Calendar, Docs, Picasa Web Albums and Groups, although I’m not seeing any links to these other services yet.

From Blogs to Podcasts and Videos

Of late, I've been getting more interested towards Podcasts.

A podcast is a digital media file, or a series of such files, that is distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on portable media players and personal computers. The term "podcast," like "radio," can mean either the content itself or the method by which it is syndicated; the latter is also termed podcasting.

I've been watching the Web mainly through RSS feeds using my favorite Google Reader. Podcasts were everywhere, there were in the blogs I was reading, in tech talks and even conferences had its own podcasts. I've not tried podcast only because I don't have iPod. I finally started to give them a real try by subscribing to them and listening them during leisure timings in my PC. Soon after I started searching for podcasts, I came across Juice, a open-source cross-platform podcast receiver. Juice was amazingly easy-to-use podcast client software using which I could easily subscribe and download the podcasts.

I already knew some podcast sites (JavaPosse, SE-Radio, etc.,) but wasn't really subscribing to those Podcasts at all!. Was just browsing through the content and I didn't really have the intention to listen to those podcasts. . So now I should find enough time to listen to those podcasts alongside reading blogs. Most importantly it should not eat my productive office hours as it happened earlier when I had too many Blog subscriptions. So, I'm planning to listen to these podcasts only during my travel to make my commuting time more productive.

Inspired from Googleplex and Google Tech Talk videos, I've been watching many technical videos nowadays. I personally find Google Tech Talk videos really useful. They really provide lots of new information and I'm really impressed that they share with people outside Google. I also had a complete look at leaked Google Reader Video before it actually went offline. There are many channels in YouTube for Google related videos. You can see those and other interesting channels in my YouTube Profile subscription list.

Get Cricket Scores from Google Search

Now you can get cricket scores in Google Search results when you search for "Cricket". Official Google blog has posted about this new feature today.

Just type [cricket] in a Google search box and you'll see a brief score of all the current cricket matches. The Search results are powered by CricBuzz, CricInfo and Willow TV. Type [cricket India] or [cricket score India England] to get results for Indian matches. Of course, you can replace India with the country of your choice for country-specific results. The score card gives the Current score, Batsman at crease with individual scores, Current run rate, Last 2 overs run split, Required run rate and Remaining target. It is indeed sufficient for any cricket lover.

Google Time Onebox

I didn't know previously that there is a Time Onebox facility from Google. I got to know from Google Blogoscoped today and it seems they have improved a bit now.

In brief, Google onebox shows the current time in different locations around the world, across the different time zones. For instance, you can enter time in bangalore or time in erode, india or usa time. The new time onebox result now shows different possible locations if the query is ambiguous (e.g. for the query Australia time, locations range from Perth to Adelaide or Kingston). Also, there is a new clock icon which shows the actual time... in gray/ silver when it's night, and yellow/ gold when it's day, apparently.

PassPack gets Gears

There have been huge adoption of Offline support using Google Gears to the web applications these days. Zoho Writer provided offline support very recently and the latest being PassPack, an online password manager for people who travel or change computers often. It has released a fully functional Offline Version of it’s online password manager powered by Google Gears meaning that this will enable you to download a copy of your data, modify them, save them and sync them once you go online again.
