How Did the Greeks Know About Kerala 2,300 Years Ago?

This morning, while going through my copy of Malayala Manorama, a small “Knowledge Bite” caught my eye. It mentioned that Megasthenes, a Greek ambassador at the Mauryan court around 300 BCE, referred to the Cheras and their neighbours in his book Indica. The idea that Greeks knew about South India—and our famous products—over 2,300 years ago immediately aroused my curiosity.

Did Europeans actually travel to Kerala that early?

That question led me down an interesting historical trail.

Who Was Megasthenes?

Megasthenes was sent by Seleucus I (a successor of Alexander the Great) as an ambassador to the Mauryan capital, Pataliputra—the city we now know as Patna in Bihar. He spent time in North India observing political systems, culture, geography, and trade.

However, there is no evidence that he travelled to South India personally.
The information he recorded about kingdoms like the Cheras came from:

Europeans did not reach Kerala during Megasthenes’ time. But they already knew about our kingdoms and products through vibrant ancient trade routes.

In the beginning, you will be invited for the introduction of your role. Please explain your role as an Ah Counter. Prepare for a 1–2-minute introduction speech.

In the evaluation session, you will be invited to present the Ah Counter report. You can mention the name of the speaker while providing your report. You have 3 minutes to present the report.

What is the ideal number of companies you should have in your portfolio? I would say 20 to 30. Because nobody can be a hundred per cent sure about the future of any company. If you have a very concentrated portfolio with a limited number of companies, you may get into trouble if any of it sinks.

2. Maintain a maximum 50% of value in the top 10, 80% in the top 20, and 100% in 30 companies. In other words, 50% the first 10 companies, 30% in next 10 and 20% in next 10.

3. For the above, consider the current value, not the invested amount.

4. Don't invest more than 20% in a single industry.

Should children carry textbooks to schools? Is classroom meant for reading textbooks? Do children learn anything more by bringing textbooks to the class? What is the use of textbooks in the class?

In the class, let them learn by listening to teachers, discussing, and taking notes. Let teachers do the job. Encourage more discussion, asking questions. Encourage students to ask questions.

Teachers can give reference to the pages and chapter in textbooks for the day's portion and students can note it down in their notebook so that they can read textbooks at home. If this is given in advance, they can come to class after reading the portion in advance.

If students study looking or reading textbooks in the class, then it is better to do homeschooling.

My child carry a bag with full of notebooks and textbooks which weighs more than one-fourth of his body weight!

Today, The Times of India carried on its front page a news regarding Kerala High Court's notice to the centre on heavy schoolbags.

CBSE already have a directive in place to reduce the weight of school bags, but it is never followed by many schools.

Back to the hobby of reading books

Getting back to the rhythm of reading books, the hobby which had lost its steam past many years! Though I never stopped buying books, these often remained in the shelf! The reading had reduced to reading the articles on the internet, academic books related to studies, social media posts. However, it has changed this year! I am delighted to realise that I read five books already this year and a couple of books are in the queue which I can complete before the end of this year! I could not stop writing about this!

Now completely shifted from Any.do to Google Reminder.

Advantages:
Reminder appears in the google calendar. So one app for appointments, schedules and reminders. More over now Google calendar have new feature for goal settings.

One app less. Saving battery charge and notifications.

What I would miss:
Any.do has subtasks option which is very useful to split one task to multiple tasks and strike off one by one. This option can be used creatively for different purpose. For example: I create a task 'buy ' and all items to be bought is created as subtasks. When I buy any item I strike it off. If I have multiple things to be completed for vacation, I make one task as vacation and create subtasks under it.

I appreciate Any.do is a great app to organise and follow up things to do. For me, I extensively use Google Calendar and it is only convenient to have reminders for things to do within the Calendar itself. It is easy to schedule any day.

Socialising while riding metro? Really?

Opportunity to socialise with others is one thing that normally people count as one of the benefits of riding metro. You meet people from all walks of life. You see people of different culture, nationality and background. And a journey on the metro is perfect opportunity to talk and socialise with them! But is it really the case?

Today I started to work as usual, but car didn't start! Without a second thought, I decided to walk up to the Ibn Battuta metro station and get on Dubai Metro. Temperature outside is just over 20⁰ C and it is jut over a kilometre to walk. Commuting on the metro - I always wanted to do but seldom did!

It was about seven in the morning. I have ridden metro before, but I think it was the first time to ride in the morning on a working day. I saw a few children in the school uniform and with school bag at the station. I never knew small children go to school by metro as my perception was that children here usually go to school by school bus or in parent’s vehicle! It may be an exceptional case?

I am not a person who begins conversation with someone! (I will be happy if somebody initiates a conversation though). So, I was not very excited about the opportunity to socialise with strangers. So next option for me is my smart phone! I checked my email and checked notification on my Google+ and Facebook. Then when I had a glance outside, I realised that I will be missing a great deal if I continue to play with my smart phone – yes the unseen scenes of Dubai from the elevated metro line! Aerial view of the roads, junctions and internal roads, progress of the construction of buildings and roads, spoiled and unspoiled spaces on the interior! A lot to see what you would not normally see when you travel on a car or a bus!

Coming back to socialising – everybody or most of them must be talking to each other, yeah? From Jabel Ali towards Rashidiya, it is off-peak time in the early morning, so there was no many people, may be just half of the seats are occupied. Most of them have managed to sit alone or at a distance from each other. There were nine people directly visible to me. Except two including me, everybody was busy with their smart phones. One lady was just sitting, looking straight in front or above. I was thinking about my changed perception about riding the metro, what she might be thinking about? Three of them were talking over phone and rest of them were doing something with the phone! With the advent of smart phones, we can’t say what people are doing on the phone! If they are with an earphone, it could be talking to someone or listening to music. If they are busy typing on the phone, it could be chatting on an instant message service, commenting on an online social network posts or writing a blog or email! Or they may be doing even some office work! It could be gaming or reading an e-book or a newspaper! Yes, possibilities are countless! So I don’t want to judge anyone!

Anyhow, one thing was clear to me - to say that metro ride would foster socialising is hypocritical! Or am I too judgemental? Or is everyone just like me who is not at ease to start a conversation with a stranger?

Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya is 250km away from Nairobi, the capital city. We started from Nairobi at 8am and reached the reserve at 2pm.

mostly grass and bushes

and occasionally trees,

We can see animals in its own environment where a variety of animals live together. Seeing this, what came to my mind is that animals like lions do not kill other animals unless they want to eat, otherwise they live together in the same wild, unlike human who do not hesitate attack and kill people for any reason!

In the same wild, we saw lions,

Steenbok,

Wildebeest,

Giraffe,

Impala,

Topi,

Ostrich, Thomson's Gazelle,

Elephants,

African Buffalo,

Zebra, wildebeest,

Thomson's Gazelle,

Birds.

Vulture,

Dik Dik,

and many more!

I hate this

Google Chrome return this when I visit Google sites or sites like Facebook etc. This happens not every time but most of the time. I tried searching for help on the web, but there is no definite solutions. But I knew one thing, many people face the same problem!

ഇവിടെ ഞങ്ങളുമായി അടുത്തിടപഴകുന്ന അയല്‍വാസികളില്‍ ഒരു റഷ്യന്‍ ഫാമിലിയും ഒരു പാകിസ്ഥാനി ഫാമിലിയും ഉണ്ട്. ഈ രണ്ട് ഫാമിലിയിലേയും കുട്ടികളെ ഈ സെപ്റ്റമ്പറില്‍ കെ.ജി യില്‍ ഒരേ സ്കൂളില്‍ ചേര്‍ത്തു, ഒരുമിച്ച് പോയി വരുന്നു. ഈയിടെ പാകിസ്ഥാനി സ്ത്രീ എന്റെ ഭാര്യയെ വിളിച്ച് ഒരു സങ്കടം പങ്ക് വച്ചു. റഷ്യന്‍ സ്ത്രീ പാകിസ്ഥാനി സ്ത്രീയോട് ചോദിച്ചുവത്രെ, നീ എന്തിനാണ് നിന്റെ കുട്ടിയെ ഫെനെറ്റിക്കല്‍ മുസ്ലിം ആയി വളര്‍ത്തുന്നത് എന്ന്. കാരണം എന്താണെന്ന് വച്ചാല്‍ സ്കൂളില്‍ ഒരുമിച്ച് ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കുമ്പൊഴായിരിക്കണം ഈ പാകിസ്ഥാനി കുട്ടി റഷ്യന്‍ കുട്ടിയോട് പറഞ്ഞത്രെ ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങുമ്പോള്‍ ബിസ്മി കൂട്ടണമെന്ന് (മുസ്ലിംകള്‍ ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങുമ്പോള്‍ ദൈവത്തെ സ്മരിക്കുന്നതാണ്‍ ഇത്). ആ കുട്ടി വീട്ടില്‍ നിന്ന് ഭക്ഷണം കഴിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ബിസ്മി കൂടിയത് കൊണ്ടാകാം ആ സ്ത്രീ അതറിഞ്ഞത്. അങ്ങിനെ ഒരു ചോദ്യം ആ പാകിസ്ഥാനി സ്ത്രീയെ വല്ലാതെ വിഷമിപ്പിച്ചു എന്ന്‍ പറയേണ്ടതില്ലല്ലോ. താന്‍ എന്താ ചെയ്യുക എന്ന ഒരു നിസ്സഹയാവസ്ഥയിലായിരുന്നു ആ സ്ത്രീ, എങ്ങിനെ ഈ സാഹചര്യം കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്യാം എന്നൊരു ഉപദേശവും ചോദിച്ചു.

3-4 വയസ്സുള്ള ഒരു കുട്ടി തന്റെ വീട്ടില്‍ കണ്ടത്/ചെയ്യുന്നത് നിഷകളങ്കമായി തന്റെ സുഹൃത്തിനോട് പറയുന്നത് തികച്ചും സ്വാഭാവികമാണ്. അത് വികാരപരമായും വര്‍ഗീയമായും എടുക്കുന്ന മുതിര്‍ന്നവരാണ് കുറ്റക്കാര്. ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്കും കുട്ടികള്‍ ഈ പ്രായത്തിലായിരുന്നപ്പോള്‍ ഇത് ഒരു വലിയ പ്രതിസന്ധിയായിരുന്നു. കുട്ടികള്‍ വര്‍ഗീയമായോ വേര്‍തിരിഞ്ഞോ ചിന്തിക്കാനും പാടില്ല, പക്ഷെ അവരുടെ ചുറ്റുപാടില്‍ കാണുന്ന വിവിധ വിശ്വാസ-ആചാരങ്ങളുമായി ബന്ധപ്പെട്ട ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് മറുപടി നല്‍കുകയും വേണം. ആ പ്രായത്തില്‍ ഇവിടെയുണ്ടായ ഒരു ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് കുട്ടിയില്‍ നിന്ന് കിട്ടിയതാവണം കുട്ടികള്‍ ചില സന്ദര്‍ഭങ്ങളില്‍ 'ഓഹ് ജീസസ്' എന്ന് ഉപയോഗിക്കുമായിരുന്നു. ചിലപ്പോള്‍ ഹിന്ദു കീര്‍ത്തനം പറയുമായിരുന്നു. അതൊന്നും ആ കുട്ടികളെ റിലീജ്യസ് ഫെനറ്റിക് ആയി വളര്‍ത്തിയത് കൊണ്ട് ഞങ്ങളുടെ കുട്ടികള്‍ക് പറഞ്ഞ് കൊടുത്തതാണെന്ന്‍ കരുതുന്നത് മണ്ടത്തരമല്ലേ. പിന്നെ അവരുടെ ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍ - ധര്‍മജന്‍ അങ്കിള്‍ വരുമ്പോള്‍/കാണുമ്പോള്‍ നമസ്കാരമെന്നോ ഗുഡ് മോര്‍ണിംഗ് എന്നൊക്കെയല്ലെ പറയുന്നത്, ശുഐബ് അങ്കിള്‍ വരുമ്പോള്‍ അസ്സലാമു അലൈകും എന്നാണല്ലോ പറയുന്നത്. അപ്പുറത്തെ അര്‍ജുന്‍ വെള്ളിയാഴ്ച പള്ളിയില്‍ പോകുന്നില്ലല്ലോ, മൈക് വേറേ ദിവസത്തിലാണല്ലോ പള്ളിയില്‍ പോകുന്നത്, ക്ലാസിലെ ആ ഫ്രന്റ് സന്ധ്യയാകുമ്പോള്‍ വേറെയാണല്ലോ ചൊല്ലുന്നത്. അങ്ങിനെ ഒരുപാട് ചോദ്യങ്ങള്. പക്ഷെ ഇത്തരം സാഹചര്യങ്ങളില്‍ നിന്ന് ഒളിച്ചോടിയിട്ട് കാര്യമുണ്ടോ? മറ്റുള്ളവരെകുറിച്ച് പരാതി പറയുന്നതില്‍ അടിസ്ഥാനമുണ്ടോ?

വിവിധ മത വിശ്വാസികളും വിശ്വസിക്കാത്തവരും ഒക്കെ ഒരുമിച്ച് കഴിയുന്ന ഒരു സമൂഹത്തില്‍ വിവിധ പശ്ചാതലത്തില്‍ നിന്ന വരുന്ന കുട്ടികള്‍ അവരുടെ വീട്ടില്‍ നിന്ന്‍ പഠിക്കുകയും മനസ്സിലാക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്ന ആചാരങ്ങ്ങ്ങളും മറ്റും നിഷ്കളങ്കമായി മറ്റൂള്ളവരുമായി പങ്ക് വെക്കുക്കയോ, അതനുസരിച്ച് പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുമ്പോള്‍ മറ്റു കുട്ടികള്‍ അത് സ്വായത്തമാക്കുകയോ ചെയ്യുക തികച്ചും സ്വാഭാവികമാണ്. ഇത്തരം ഒരു സാഹചര്യം വിവിധ മതങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ചും ആചാരങ്ങളെ കുറിച്ചും കുട്ടികള്‍ക്ക് മനസ്സിലാക്കി കൊടുക്കാനുള്ള ഒരു അവസരമായി എടുക്കുകയാണ് വേണ്ടത്. പക്ഷെ അങ്ങ്ങ്ങിനെ പറഞ്ഞുകൊടുക്കുന്നതോടെ അടുത്ത പ്രശ്നം തുടങ്ങും. പിന്നെ ആരെയെങ്കിലും കണ്ടാല്‍ അത് ഹിന്ദുവാണോ, മുസ്ലിമാണോ എന്നൊക്കെ ചോദിച്ച് കളയും! പുതുതായി ഒരു കാര്യം അറിഞ്ഞതിന്റെ ഒരു കൌതുകം മാത്രമാണതെന്ന്‍ നമുക്ക് മനസ്സിലാകും , പക്ഷെ കേള്‍ക്കുന്നവര്‍ക്ക് മനസ്സിലാക്കാന്‍ പറ്റിയെന്ന് വരില്ലല്ലോ. അങ്ങിനെ അവര്‍ ആരാണെന്ന് ചോദിക്കേണ്ടതില്ലെന്നും അവര്‍ ആരാണ് എന്നത നമ്മെ സംബന്ധിച്ചിടത്തോളം പ്രസക്തിയില്ലെന്നും അത് അറിയേണ്ടതില്ലെന്നും ഒക്കെ അവര്‍ക്ക് മനസ്സിലാകുന്ന രീതിയില്‍ മെല്ലെ മെല്ലെ പറഞ്ഞ് മനസ്സിലാക്കി കൊടുത്തു. ഇത് മതത്തിന്റെ കാര്യത്തില്‍ മാത്രമായിരുന്നില്ല. അയല്പക്കത്തെ കുട്ടികളുമായി ഇടപഴകി തുടങ്ങി അവര്‍ പലരും വിവിധ ഭാഷകള്‍ ആണ് സംസാരിക്കുന്നത് എന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കി തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോഴും ഇത്തരം ചോദ്യങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അപ്പോള്‍ വിവിധ നാഷനാലിറ്റിയെ കുറിച്ചും മാതൃഭാഷയെ കുറിച്ചും ഒക്കെ പറഞ്ഞ് കൊടുത്തപ്പോള്‍ പിന്നെ ആരെ കണ്ടാലും അയാള്‍ മലയാളിയാണോ, ഇന്ത്യനാണോ, പാകിസ്ഥാനിയാണോ, ബ്രിടീഷ് ആണോ എന്ന് ചോദിക്കുമായിരുന്നു.

നാട്ടിലാകുമ്പോള്‍ ഇങ്ങിനെ ഒരു പ്രതിസന്ധിയുണ്ടോ? ഇല്ലെന്നാണ് എനിക്ക് തോന്നുന്നത്. അതിന്റെ കാരണാം എന്തായിരിക്കാം? എന്റെ ഒരു നിരീക്ഷണം നാട്ടില്‍ നാമൊക്കെ മലയാളം പഠിച്ചത് പോലെ ഇത്തരം കാര്യങ്ങളും വളര്‍ന്ന് വരുമ്പോഴെ നാച്വറലായി മനസ്സില്ലാക്കുന്നു എന്നതാണ്. ഇവിടെയാകുമ്പോള്‍ അടച്ചിട്ട ചുവരുകള്‍ക്കുള്ളില്‍ വളര്‍ന്ന് പിന്നെ സ്കൂളില്‍ പോയി തുടങ്ങുന്ന പ്രായത്തില്‍ മാത്രമാണ് ഇത്തരം ചുറ്റുപാടുകളുമായി ഇടപഴകാന്‍ സഹചര്യം ലഭിക്കുന്നത് എന്നതിനാലാവാം.

കുട്ടികള്‍ നിഷ്കളങ്കരാണ്‍, അതില്‍ നമ്മളായിട്ട് മായം ചേര്‍ക്കാതിരിക്കുക.

You don’t have to get poorer!

‘The rich get richer and the poor get poorer’ – this is a catchphrase that people often use to criticize uneven economic development. It may be a fact though. I am not going to write a scholarly discussion on the economic theory here, but just to discuss from a common man perspective how does it happen!

How do rich get richer? If you have one million and deposit it in a bank fixed deposit at a rate of 5% per annum, it becomes 1.28 million in five years. When you have one million you will be able to invest in shares which will give you better return. When you have one million you will be able to invest in real estate or rental property which will give you regular rental income besides capital appreciation. You will be able to start a business or invest in a business which may again multiply your wealth. This is how rich becomes richer! It is only natural and there is no meaning in complaining about it.

So it is obvious that the rich get richer. Does it mean that you have to get poorer? How does it happen? You spend on what you can’t afford. When you try to imitate others, you fail to recognize that others do it because they can afford it after saving enough to build their wealth. You take loan to spend and pledge your future income for present luxuries, while others save from their present income to meet their future expenses. You pay interest while others earn interest. You misunderstood that living the life means spending on luxuries! You go behind ‘get rich quick’ schemes and lose everything. Yes, it is you who make you poorer.

So how to avoid becoming poorer? First thing that you need to do is live an affordable life. Keep yourself away from debt. Never pledge your future income by taking loan to meet present expenses. Keep a portion of income as savings – treat it as a necessary and unavoidable expense. Understand that there is no quick way or short cut to make money – It needs years of hard work. Realise your hidden potential, polish the skills that you already have and find some way to generate additional income.

Warren Buffet, the self-made billionaire

Rich made their first million by sweating, by doing their hard work, going that extra mile, deferring their gratification. Read about any rich people, there is a hard work behind them – at least by their parents or grandparents. Warrant Buffet, one of the top five world billionaires, has gone door to door selling chewing gum, soft drinks or magazines. He has worked in grocery shop. Every rich has a beginning from the low.

I know there are people who get rich by unscrupulous methods. I know there are poor people who are in trouble too deep to come out of it themselves. Forget about the former, they can’t enjoy their life too long peacefully. Help the later, it will help you to live peacefully rest of your life.

What will you do first when you want to build a house?

Constructing or buying a house is one of the most important decisions in one's life. It is everybody's dream to have a house of their own. However it is a most dead investment one can make as it does not provide any direct return while it is the largest capital expenditure in one's life. You may use up all your savings and you may even commit your future income by way of a loan! An house can not provide you income for buying food or send your children to school. Many end up in debt traps and lose their peace of mind at the end.

That is why it is very important to have a good planning from the beginning. It will be difficult to change any part or design at a later stage and any change may be too expensive and can delay the completion. Here comes value management study to optimise our requirement and resources for the maximum benefit. Value management is not about building cheap, but finding value for the money spent.

There are four stages or steps for a value management study for any construction project - Concept, Space, Element and Component. You don't need a professional or you don't have to be an experienced person to do a value management study before you build a home - at least at Concept and Space stage. However you can get professional advice from your architect or civil engineer for a value engineering study at Element and Component stage. In western countries, value engineering studies are very common for civil engineering projects and it is gaining momentum in the Middle East too. At Space level, you brainstorm for ideas for the spaces you required in your house. How many bedrooms do you need? Do you want a store room along side the kitchen? Or a spacious kitchen and a 'work area'? Do you want all the bedroom with attached bathroom or one or two common bathroom? Do you want a separate dining room or just a hall combining living and dining? Do you want a large veranda or a small one would be okay for you. There is no rule here, all depends on your requirements, your interests, your concept, your values! Yes it varies from person to person. You will have to see who are going to stay in the proposed house. If you have aged parents to stay with you, you need minimum two bedrooms ground floor. Requirements may be different if you are in early middle-age with young children and if you are late middle-age with your children working or settled out of town. It may be highly likely that the children will settle down there and you may not require a bigger house. Staying in a large house as an aged couple would be like staying in a ghost house!

Then comes Elements and Components. You may require advice from a professional or experienced persons at this level. Your architect, civil engineer or contractor can help you to take a better decision. Here is where you decide about the doors and windows, external and internal walls, floors, other elements and components of the building. You would weigh cost and benefits of various options. Eg. Floor - there are many materials used for flooring like stone flooring, wood flooring or tile flooring. In each of these categories there are further options - for eg. in stone flooring, you have options such as marble, granite and so on. Your selection will depends on your budget, your requirements, your interests and your values.

ഇപ്രാവശ്യം നാട്ടില്‍ പോയാല്‍ വാടകയ്ക്ക് കാറ് എടുക്കില്ലെന്ന് ഉറപ്പിച്ചിരുന്നു. കാറുണ്ടായാല്‍ നാട്ടില്‍ പോയതിന്റെ ഒരു ഇഫക്റ്റ് കിട്ടുന്നില്ല. വീട്ടില്‍ നിന്ന് ഇറങ്ങി വണ്ടിയെടുത്ത് എത്തേണ്ടിടത്ത് ഇറങ്ങി തിരിച്ച് വന്ന് - എന്തോ ഒരു കുറവുണ്ട്. നാടുമായി ഒന്നു അടുത്തിടപെടാന്‍ കഴിയില്ല. എപ്പോഴും കരുതും അടുത്ത തവണ വണ്ടി എടുക്കില്ലെന്ന്, പക്ഷെ സാധിക്കില്ല. ഇപ്രാവശ്യം അത് നടപ്പിലാക്കി.

എന്റെ ഗ്രാമത്തില്‍നിന്ന് അടുത്ത ടൌണിലേക്ക് രണ്ട് കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ ഉണ്ട്. നടക്കാം അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ ആട്ടോ പിടിക്കാം. വന്നതിന്റെ പിറ്റേന്ന് തന്നെ മകനുമായി നടന്നപ്പോ വഴിയിലും റോഡിനരികിലെ വീടുകളില്‍ പുറത്തിരിക്കുന്നവരേയും കണ്ടു, സുഖാന്വേഷണങ്ങള്‍ കൈമാറി, കൊച്ചുവര്‍ത്തമാനങ്ങള്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. വളരെ സന്തോഷം തോന്നി. പ്രായമായവരാണ് കണ്ടവരില്‍ കൂടുതലും. പത്ത്-പതിനഞ്ച് വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കിപ്പുറം വളര്‍ന്ന ചെറുപ്പക്കാരെ വലിയ പരിചയമില്ല. സമപ്രായക്കാരായവര്‍ മിക്കവരും നാട്ടിലില്ല.

റോഡരികില്‍ നിന്നും ഒരു ദൃശ്യം

നടക്കുമ്പോള്‍ മകന് നാട്ടിനെ കുറിച്ചും, വയലുകളെകുറിച്ചും, മരങ്ങളെകുറിച്ചും, പക്ഷികളെകുറിച്ചും ഒക്കെ പറഞ്ഞ് കൊടുക്കാന്‍ പറ്റി. കൂടെ ഓര്‍മകള്‍ അയവിറക്കലുമായി.

അല്പം നടന്നപ്പോള്‍ ദേവി ടീച്ചറെ കിട്ടി കൂടെ നടക്കാന്‍. വിഷേശങ്ങള്‍ പറഞ്ഞ് നടക്കവെ കുറച്ച് കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ ഗള്‍ഫില്‍ നിന്ന് വന്ന ഒരു സുഹൃത്ത് കാറുമായി അത് വഴി വന്നു. ഞങ്ങള്‍ നടക്കുന്നത് കണ്ട് അവന്‍ വണ്ടി നിര്‍ത്തി. പിന്നെ അതില്‍ കയറുകയല്ലാതെ വേറെ വഴിയില്ല. അത്ര അഹങ്കാരം വേണ്ടല്ലേ.

നാട്ടിന്‍പുറത്തിലൂടെയുള്ള നടത്തം, ബസ്സില്‍ യാത്ര, ബസ് സ്റ്റാന്‍ഡ്, ആട്ടോ അങ്ങിനെ സ്വകാര്യ വാഹനം ഇല്ലെങ്കില്‍ അത് ഒരു ഹരമാണ്. ഇതിനിടയില്‍ പല അനുഭവങ്ങള്‍ - ആശങ്കകളും പ്രതീക്ഷകളും തരുന്ന സമ്മിശ്ര അനുഭവങ്ങള്‍. കുട്ടികളേയും കൂട്ടി ട്രെയിനില്‍ യാത്ര ചെയ്യണമെന്ന പ്ലാന്‍ മാത്രം നടന്നില്ല.

ഗള്‍ഫ്കാരന്‍ നാട്ടില്‍ വരുമ്പോള്‍ സ്വന്തമായോ വാടകയ്ക്കോ ഒരു വണ്ടി എടുത്തിരിക്കണമെന്നത് നാട്ടില്‍ ഇപ്പോള്‍ ഒരു അലിഖിത നിയമമായിട്ടുണ്ട്. അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ നാട്ടുകാര്‍ക്ക് വലിയ വിഷമമാണ്. ചിലര്‍ സഹതാപത്തോടെ നോക്കും, ചിലര്‍ പുഛത്തോടെയും. ചിലര്‍ നേരിട്ട് ചോദിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യും. ശരിക്കും നല്ല ഗഡ്സ് വേണം.

ഗ്രീന്‍ ബില്‍ഡിങ്ങ്: മനോഭാവം മാറണം

സുസ്ഥിര വികസനം (sustainable development), ഗ്രീന്‍ ബില്‍ഡിങ്ങ് (Green Building) എന്നൊക്കെ കേള്‍ക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയിട്ട് കാലം കുറെയായി. പക്ഷെ അത് വെറും മാധ്യമങ്ങളില്‍ മാത്രമാണ്, നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടില്‍ ഇത് പ്രായോഗിക തലത്തില്‍ എത്താന്‍ ഇനിയും കാലമെടുക്കും എന്നാണ് അനുഭവത്തിന്റെ വെളിച്ചത്തില്‍ എനിക്ക് തോന്നുന്നത്.

നിര്‍മ്മാണ വസ്തുക്കളുടെ പുനരുപയോഗവും പ്രാദേശികമായി ലഭ്യമായ നിര്‍മ്മാണവസ്തുക്കളുടെ ഉപയോഗവും ഗ്രീന്‍ ബില്‍ഡിങ്ങ് തത്വങ്ങളില്‍ വളരെ പ്രാധാനപ്പെട്ടതാണ്. വീടെടുക്കുന്ന ഉടമസ്ഥന്‍ മനസ്സ് വെച്ചാല്‍ മാത്രം പോരാ പണി എടുക്കുന്നവര്‍ക്കും എടുപ്പിക്കുന്നവര്‍ക്കും അതിന്റെ ബോധം വേണം, മനോഭാവം മാറണം എന്ന് എന്റെ അനുഭവം അടിവരയിടുന്നു. പഴയ തറവാട് പൊളിച്ചാണ് ഞാന്‍ വീട് പണി തുടങ്ങിയത്. തറവാട് പൊളിച്ചപ്പോള്‍ കവുക്കോല്‍, വണ്ണം കൂടിയ കട്ടിളകളും വാതിലുകളുമൊക്കെയായി മോശമല്ലാത്ത തടികള്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നു. പുതിയ വീടിന് കട്ടിളയും ജനലും ഉണ്ടാക്കാന്‍ ആവശ്യമായ മരം അതില്‍ നിന്ന് തിരഞ്ഞെടുക്കാന്‍ ആശാരിയെ കൊണ്ട് വന്നാപ്പോള്‍ ഒരു കാര്യം മനസ്സിലായി അയാള്‍ക്ക് പരമാവധി പഴയ മരം എടുക്കുന്നത് ഒഴിവാക്കാനാണ് താത്പര്യം എന്ന്. പഴയ മരം ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നത് വഴി എത്ര മരങ്ങള്‍ മുറിക്കുന്നത് ഒഴിവാക്കാന്‍ പറ്റുമെന്ന് ചിന്തിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കില്‍! ഈ പഴയ മരങ്ങള്‍ പാഴായി പോകില്ല എന്ന് ചിന്തിച്ചിരുന്നെങ്കില്! പഴ വീടിന്റെ വരാന്തയുടെ കവുക്കോല്‍ കൊണ്ട് മാത്രം പുതിയ പുരയുടെ വരാന്ത കവുക്കോലും ഓടുമാക്കാമായിരുന്നു. ഞാന്‍ എന്റെ പ്ലാന്‍ ഉണ്ടാക്കിയത് പോലും അതിന്‍ പറ്റുന്ന വിധത്തിലായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷെ മേസ്തിരിക്ക് അത് ശരിയാവില്ല എന്ന് പറയാനേ കഴിഞ്ഞുള്ളൂ. കുഴിനാട്ടയ്ക്ക് മതിയായ കാട്ട്കല്ല് (പാറ) സൈറ്റില്‍ തന്നെ ലഭ്യമാണ്. പക്ഷെ അതുപയോഗിക്കുന്നതിലും കുറെ എക്സ്ക്യൂസസ് ആണ്.

അങ്ങിനെ പുനരുപയോഗിക്കാവുന്ന മരങ്ങള്‍ ഉണ്ടായിട്ടും പുതിയ മരങ്ങള്‍ വാങ്ങണം, പ്രാദേശികമെന്നല്ല സൈറ്റില്‍ തന്നെ ലഭ്യമായ പാറ കല്ലുകള്‍ ഉണ്ടായിട്ടും കുഴിനാട്ടയിടാന്‍ ‘സെക്കന്റ് ചെത്ത് കല്ല്’ (അങ്ങിനെയാണ് അതിന്‍ പറയുന്നത്) വാങ്ങണം.

എനിക്കും തെറ്റുപറ്റി എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ മതിയല്ലോ. തുടക്കത്തില്‍ ഞാനും ഇക്കാര്യമൊക്കെ ശ്രദ്ധിക്കേണ്ടതായിരുന്നു. ഇങ്ങിനെയൊക്കെയാണ് നാട്ടിലെ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ എന്ന് മനസ്സിലാക്കാന്‍ ഞാനും വൈകി. അല്ലെങ്കില്‍ പ്രൊജക്ട് മാനേജറെ തെരഞ്ഞെടുക്കുന്ന അവസരത്തില്‍ തന്നെ കുറച്ച് കൂടി ശ്രദ്ധ പുലര്‍ത്തുമായിരുന്നു. പക്ഷെ പ്രൊജക്ട് മാനേജരില്‍ മാത്രം ഒതുങ്ങുന്നതല്ല ഇത് എന്നത് മറ്റൊരു കാര്യം. മരപ്പണിക്കാരും, കല്‍പണിക്കാരും എന്ന് വേണ്ട കെട്ടിട നിര്‍മ്മാണത്തിന്റെ ഓരോ സ്റ്റേജിലും ഏര്‍പ്പെടുന്ന പണിക്കാരും കോണ്ട്രാക്ടര്‍മാരും അവരുടെ മനോഭാവം മാറ്റുകയും പുതിയ കാര്യങ്ങള്‍ പഠിക്കുവാനും മാറുന്ന പാരിസ്ഥിതിക സാമൂഹിക അവസ്ഥകള്‍ മനസ്സിലാക്കുവാനും തയ്യാറാകിടത്തോളം ഇതിന്‍ മാറ്റം ഉണ്ടാകുകയില്ല.

യഥാര്‍ത്ഥില്‍ ഈ മേഖലയിലെ പ്രൊഫഷണലുകള്‍ക്കാണ് അവരുടെ ക് ളൈന്റിനെ മാറുന്ന സാഹചര്യങ്ങള്‍ ബോധ്യപ്പെടുത്തി കൊടുക്കേണ്ട ഉത്തരവാദിത്തം. പക്ഷെ അവര്‍തന്നെ ഇങ്ങിനെയായാലോ?

കണ്ണൂര്‍ ടൌണില്‍ എത്തിയപ്പോള്‍ കൂടെയുണ്ടായിരുന്ന മകന് മൂത്രശങ്ക. വീട്ടിലെത്തുന്നത് വരെ നീട്ടി വെക്കാന്‍ പറഞ്ഞപ്പോള്‍ ഒരു രക്ഷയുമില്ല. അടുത്ത് കണ്ട ഒരു പെട്രോള്‍ സ്റ്റേഷനില്‍ തീരെ പതിവില്ലാത്ത വിധം ഭംഗിയായി ഒരു ബോര്‍ഡില്‍ റ്റൊയ്ലെറ്റ് എന്ന് എഴുതിയത് കണ്ട് അവിടെ കയറാം എന്ന് കരുതി. പക്ഷെ ഒരു വാതില്‍ കാണാത്തതിനാല്‍ അവിടെ കണ്ട ഒരു സെക്യൂരിറ്റിയോട് ചോദിച്ചു. പക്ഷെ ഒരു അക്രോഷമായിരുന്നു മറുപടി - ‘ഞാന്‍ ടൊയ്ലെറ്റിന്റെ ആളല്ല’. എന്തോ ടൊയ്ലറ്റിലേക്കുള്ള വഴി ചോദിച്ചത് അദ്ധേഹത്തിന്റെ അഭിമാനത്തിന് ക്ഷതം ഏല്പിച്ചെന്ന് തോന്നുന്നു! അയാളോട് സംസാരിച്ച് കൊണ്ടിരുന്ന ആള്‍ എന്നോട് സൌമ്യനായി പറഞ്ഞു ആ പെട്രോള്‍ സ്റ്റേഷന്‍ അറ്റന്‍ഡറൊഡ് അന്വേഷിക്കാന്‍.

"കുട്ടിക്കാണോ അതാ അവ്ടെ ഒഴിച്ചോളൂ, റ്റൊയ്ലെറ്റ് തുറക്കാന്‍ ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടാണ് "- അവിടെയുള്ള കെട്ടിടത്തിനെ വശത്ത് ഒരു ഓപണ്‍ സ്പേയ്സ് ചൂണ്ടിയാണ് അയാള്‍ പറഞ്ഞത്. നമ്മുടെ നാട്ടിന്റെ ഒരു കാര്യം!

നല്ലൊരു ടൊയ്ലറ്റ് ഉണ്ടായിട്ടും, മൂത്രമൊഴിക്കാന്‍ കാണിച്ച് തന്ന ഓപണ്‍ സ്പേയ്സ്. ഈ ഫോട്ടോ സെക്യൂരിറ്റി ഇഷ്യുവൊന്നും ഉണ്ടാക്കില്ലെന്ന് കരുതാം.

വേറെ വഴിയില്ല. മകനോട് അവിടെ ഒഴിക്കാന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു. ഒരു കൌതുകം തോന്നിയതിനാല്‍ ആ ഇടത്തിന്റെ ഒരു ഫോട്ടൊ എടുത്തു. പിന്നെ ഭംഗിയായി ടൊയ്ലെറ്റ് എന്ന് എഴുതിയ ബോര്‍ഡിന്റെയും ഒരു ഫോട്ടോ എടുത്തു ഞാന്‍ അവിടെ നിന്നും ഇറങ്ങി റോഡിന്റെ അരികില്‍ നില്ക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ആ സെക്യൂരിറ്റി വന്ന് എന്റെ കൈക്ക് പിടിച്ച് ഫോട്ടോ എടുത്തോ എന്ന് ചോദിച്ചുകൊണ്ട് റോഡിനരികില്‍ നിന്ന് പെട്രോള്‍ സ്റ്റേഷന്റെ കോമ്പൌണ്ടിലേക്ക് കയറി. പോലീസിനെ വിളിക്കുകയാണെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ് അയാള്‍ ഫോണില്‍ നമ്പറടിക്കാന്‍ തുടങ്ങി. ചേട്ടാ കാര്യമെന്താണെന്ന് പറയൂ എന്നിട്ട് പോലിസിനെ വിളിച്ചാല്‍ പോരെ എന്ന് ഞാനും പറഞ്ഞു. ആ ടൊയ്ലെറ്റിനോട് ചേര്‍ന്ന് ഒരു എ.ടി.എം ഉണ്ട് അവിടുത്തെ സെക്യൂരിറ്റിയാണ് ഇയാള്‍. എ.ടി.എമ്മിന്റെ ഫോട്ടോയാണ് നിങ്ങള്‍ എടുത്തത്, ഇവിടെ പലതും നടക്കുന്നുണ്ട് എന്നൊക്കെ അയാള്‍ ചൂടായി പറഞ്ഞു. ചേട്ടാ അങ്ങിനെയെങ്കില്‍ അത് പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ പോരെ ഞാന്‍ അത് ഡിലീറ്റ് ചെയ്തേക്കാം എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ് ഞാന്‍ അത് ഡിലീറ്റ് ചെയ്യുകയും ചെയ്തു. ടൊയ്ലെറ്റിന്റെ വഴി ചോദിച്ചതിന് ചേട്ടന്‍ എന്തിനാ ചൂടായത് എന്ന് ഞാന്‍ ചോദിച്ചു. അയാള്‍ മറുപടിയൊന്നും പറയാതെ പോയി.

പിന്നെയാണ് അതിന്റെ ക്ലൈമാക്സ്. സെക്യൂരിറ്റിക്കാരന്‍ പോയ ഉടനെ രണ്ട് ചെറുപ്പക്കാര്‍ എന്റെടുത്ത് വന്നു എന്താണെന്ന് ചോദിച്ചു. ഞാന്‍ കാര്യം പറഞ്ഞു. പിന്നെ അവര്‍ ചൂടാകന്‍ തുടങ്ങി - അത്രയെ ഉള്ളൂ, അതിനാണോ അയാള്‍ നിന്റെ കൈയില്‍ പിടിച്ചത്. ഞങ്ങള്‍ കരുതി നീ എ.ടി.എമ്മില്‍ എന്തെങ്കിലും തട്ടിപ്പ് നടത്തിയിട്ടാണ് എന്ന്. നീ എന്തിനാണ്‍ അങ്ങിനെ വെറുതെ വിട്ടത്. വാ നമുക്ക് ചോദിക്കാം. ഞാന്‍ പറഞ്ഞു വിട്ടേക്ക് - കുഴപ്പമില്ല. പക്ഷെ അവര്‍ വിടാന്‍ ഭാവമില്ല. എന്നല്‍ ഞങ്ങള്‍ പോയി ചോദിക്കും എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു അവര്‍ അയാളുടെ അടുത്തേക്ക് ചെന്നു.

അവര്‍ അയാളോട് വല്ലാതെ ചൂടാവുന്നുണ്ട്. പിന്നെ ഞാന്‍ അങ്ങോട്ട് ചെന്നു. അയാള്‍ ന്യായികരിക്കാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നുണ്ട് പക്ഷെ അവര്‍ വിടുന്നില്ല. ഒരു കുട്ടിയുമായി പോകുന്ന ആളോട് ഇങ്ങിനെയാണോ പെരുമാറുന്നത്, കുറച്ച് കൂടി മാന്യമായി പെരുമാറിക്കൂടെ. നിങ്ങള്‍ ഫെഡറല്‍ ബാങ്കിന്റെ മാത്രം സെക്യൂരിറ്റിയാണ് അല്ലാതെ കണ്ണൂര്‍ ടൌണിന്റെ മൊത്തം സെക്യൂരിറ്റിയാവണ്ട, ഇത് കണ്ണൂരാണ് എന്നൊക്കെ അവര്‍ പറയുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അവസാനം നിങ്ങളുടെ പേരെന്താണ് ഞങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് എന്ത് ചെയ്യാന്‍ പറ്റുമെന്ന് നോക്കട്ടേ എന്നൊക്കെ അവര്‍ പറയാന്‍ തുടങ്ങിയപ്പോള്‍ സെക്യൂരിക്കാരന്‍ മെല്ലെ പിന്‍-വലിയാന്‍ ശ്രമിക്കുന്നത് കണ്ടു. അവസാനം ഞാന്‍ അവരെ സമാധാനിപ്പിച്ച് അവിടെ നിന്ന് കൊണ്ട് പോയി.

ഞാന്‍ അവരെ പരിചയപ്പെടാന്‍ ശ്രമിച്ചു. പക്ഷെ അവര്‍ കൂടുതല്‍ പരിചയപ്പെടാന്‍ താത്പര്യം കാണിച്ചില്ല. പിന്നെ എനിക്ക് കുറച്ച് ഉപദേശവും - “അങ്ങിനെ പേടിക്കേണ്ടതില്ല, ഇവിടെ നാട്ടുകാരില്ലെ. നിങ്ങളുടെ കൈയില്‍ അങ്ങിനെ പിടിച്ച് നടക്കുമ്പോള്‍ കാണുന്നവര്‍ എന്താണ് കരുതുക. ഞങ്ങള്‍ കരുതിയത് നിങ്ങള്‍ എ.ടി.എമ്മില്‍ എന്തെങ്കിലും തട്ടിപ്പ് നടത്തി എന്നാണ്. അങ്ങിനെയല്ലേ എല്ലാവരും കരുതുക. നിങ്ങളുടെ കൂടെ ഒരു കുട്ടിയുമില്ലേ. ഞങ്ങള്‍ ശരിക്കു വിഷമമായി അത്കൊണ്ടാണ് ഞങ്ങള്‍ ചോദിച്ചത്“. ശരിക്കും പറഞ്ഞാല്‍ ഇതിന്‍ അങ്ങിനെയും ഒരു മാനമുണ്ടെന്ന് അപ്പോഴാണ് ഞാന്‍ ചിന്തിച്ചത്.

ഇപ്പോഴും ഞാന്‍ കണ്‍ഫ്യൂഷനിലാണ് ആരാണ്‍ ശരി, ആരണ് തെറ്റ്! നിങ്ങള്‍ക്കെന്ത് തോന്നുന്നു?

അയാള്‍ അയാളുടെ ജോലി ചെയ്തതാകാം. പക്ഷെ പൊതുജനങ്ങളോട് ഇടപഴകേണ്ട ഒരു ജോലിയാകുമ്പോള്‍ കുറച്ച് കൂടി മര്യാദ ആവാമായിരുന്നു. എങ്ങിനെ സംസാരിക്കണം എങ്ങിനെ ഇടപെടണം എന്നതിനെ കുറിച്ച് ഒരു മിനിമം പരിശീലനമെങ്കിലും ബാങ്കായാലും സെക്യൂരിറ്റി ഏജന്‍സി ആയാലും നല്‍കേണ്ടതാണ്.

ചോട്ടയുമായി ഒരു ബസ് യാത്ര

കണ്ണൂരില്‍ നിന്ന് ചെറുകുന്നിലേക്ക് എന്റെ അഞ്ചുവയസ്സുകാരനുമായി ഒരു ബസ്സ് യാത്ര.

ബസ്സില്‍ കയറിയപ്പോള്‍ തന്നെ അവന് ആദ്യം ശ്രദ്ധിച്ചത് വിന്‍ഡൊയ്ക്ക് ഗ്ലാസില്ല എന്നതായിരുന്നു. ബസ്സ് നീങ്ങിതുടങ്ങിയതിന്‍ ശേഷം ഗ്ലാസില്ലാത്ത അതിവിശാലമായ ജനാലയിലൂടെ നേരിട്ട് വളരെ വ്യക്തമായി കാണുന്ന കാഴ്ചകള്‍ ദുബായിലേതില്‍ നിന്നും വളരെ വ്യത്യസ്ഥമാണല്ലോ.

“ഉപ്പാ, ഇതൊക്കെ കാണാനാ നമ്മള്‍ ബസ്സില്‍ പോകുന്നത്?”

“അതെ”

കുറച്ച് കഴിഞ്ഞ് ബസ്സിന്റെ വേഗത കൂടി (മരണപാച്ചിലാണ് ഈ റൂട്ടിലെ ബസ്സുകളുടെ ഒരു രീതി)

“വേഗം കാണിച്ച് തരാനാ ഇതു സ്പീഡില്‍ പോകുന്നത്?”

“അതെ” :)

“പക്ഷെ സ്പീഡില്‍ പോകുമ്പോള്‍ എനിക്ക് ശരിക്കും കാണാന്‍ പറ്റുന്നില്ല”

We do not spend all of our earnings, but save. We save for the future - to meet planned and unplanned future requirements importantly for the bright future of our children. But what about preserving an habitable climate for our children? What about conserving the natural resources which are finite in supply? Think about a situation that we have saved a considerable amount for the future needs of our children but they don't have enough clean water, pure air, other basic resources even an habitable climate that they can buy with our savings!

Sustainable development means meeting our present needs without compromising the ability of the future generation to meet theirs. So, how is our race for a comfortable living for us and our family going to compromise the comfortable living of our children and generations to come?

We have read and heard a lot about the climate change and global warming and we know its consequences. People around the world have already started to taste the sample of future to come - drastic changes in the climate and soaring temperature! It has been identified that major cause of climate change is greenhouse gas emission. Carbon Dioxide is the predominant greenhouse gas. Carbon dioxide is emitted when the fossil fuels are burnt. Coal, oil and gas are major fossil fuels. Mainly, fossil fuels are burnt to generate electricity, to run motor vehicles and to operate machines in the factory etc.

The government can not ban production of electricity, vehicles or running factories. But we the people can reduce the need for setting up more electricity plants and factories and in turn need for more fossil fuels to be burnt! Yes! use less, save and preserve!

Another reason why we should preserve the natural resources are that they are not unlimited in supply. We use fuels, water and other natural resource quicker than it is replenished by the nature. Resources are there to meet the need of every living creatures, but not our greed.

So how can we do justice to our future generation! Conserve the natural resources and preserve our environment. Consume less. Any products that we buy reach us after long manufacturing process and transportation where it has caused emission of carbon either directly or indirectly and has used up so much natural resources.

Use public transport and bicycles. It saves fuels and reduce the carbon emission from using your own vehicle. 10 people driving 10 cars and 10 people travelling in a single vehicle make lots of difference! Save electricity, it will reduce the need for more generation capacity and thus save fuels and reduce carbon emission. Use energy efficient equipments and lights. Use renewable energy, utilise the products that works on renewable energy like solar, wind etc. Renewable energy do not use depleting fuels and do not burn fuel that cause carbon emission. Make your building - home, office or factories - more energy efficient. Buildings are where most of the energy is used - for lighting, heating, cooling and so on! Follow green building norms when you construct your home or any other building. Refurbish your existing building incorporating some of the green building features!

യു.എ.ഇ. നാഷണല്‍ ബോണ്ട്സ് ലാഭ വിഹിതം നല്‍കുന്ന രീതിയില്‍ മാറ്റം വരുത്തുന്നു. നിക്ഷെപ കാലയളവ് അനുസരിച്ച് ഇനി ലാഭവിഹിത നിരക്കില്‍ വിത്യാസമുണ്ടാകും. ഇതനുസരിച്ച് കുറച്ച് കാലത്തെക്ക് മാത്രം നിക്ഷേപിക്കുന്നവര്‍ക്ക്, വാര്‍ഷിക ലാഭവിഹിതത്തിന്റെ ഒരു നിശ്ചിത ശതമാനം മാത്രമേ ലഭിക്കുകയുള്ളൂ. അതായത് സ്ഥിര നിക്ഷേപത്തിന്‍ മേല്‍ (Fixed deposit) ലഭിക്കുന്ന പലിശ/ലാഭവിഹിതം 3 മാസം, 6 മാസം, 1 വര്‍ഷം എന്നിങ്ങനെ വിവിധ കാലയളവിലേക്ക് വ്യത്യസ്ത നിരക്കുള്ളത് പോലെയായിരിക്കും ഇനി മുതല്‍ നാഷണല്‍ ബോണ്ട്സിലെ ലാഭ വിഹിതവും. പുതുക്കിയ രീതി 2011 മുതലുള്ള ലാഭത്തിനായിരിക്കും ബാധകമാകുക. ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ രീതിയനുസരിച്ച കാലയളവ് വ്യത്യാസമില്ലാതെ വാര്‍ഷിക നിരക്കനുസരിച്ച് തന്നെ നിക്ഷേപിച്ച കാലയളവിന് ലാഭ വിഹിതം കിട്ടുമായിരുന്നു.

3 മാസത്തില്‍ താഴെ (Tier 1) വാര്‍ഷിക നിരക്കിന്റെ 40%, 6 മാസത്തില്‍ താഴെ (Tier 2) വാര്‍ഷിക നിരക്കിന്റെ 60%, 1 വര്‍ഷത്തില്‍ താഴെ (Tier 3) വാര്‍ഷിക നിരക്കിന്റെ 80%, ഒരു വര്‍ഷം (Tier 4) തികച്ചും പൂര്‍ത്തിയാക്കുന്നവര്‍ക്ക് പൂര്‍ണ്ണമായും എന്നിങ്ങനെയാണ് പുതുക്കിയ ലാഭവിഹിത വിതരണം ഉണ്ടാകുക.

മിനിമം ഒരു മാസത്തിന് ശേഷം എപ്പോള്‍ വേണമെങ്കിലും പിന്‍-വലിക്കാം എന്ന സൌകര്യം തുടര്‍ന്നും ഉണ്ടാകും. ലാഭവിഹിതത്തില്‍ കുറവുണ്ടാകും എന്ന് മാത്രം. കഴിഞ്ഞ വര്‍ഷങ്ങളില്‍ സ്ഥിര നിക്ഷേപത്തിനോളം തന്നെ ലാഭ വിഹിതവും, ഒരു സേവിങ്സ് അക്കൌണ്ടിന്റെ പിന്-വലിക്കുവാനുള്ള സൌകര്യവും തന്നിരുന്നു എന്നത് നാഷണല്‍ ബോണ്ട്സിന്റെ അത്യാകര്‍ഷണമായിരുന്നു. പുതുക്കിയ രീതിയനുസരിച്ച്, ഒരു വര്‍ഷത്തില്‍ താഴെ നിക്ഷേപിക്കുന്നവര്‍ക്ക് സ്ഥിര നിക്ഷേപത്തിന്റെ ആദായം ലഭിച്ചില്ലെങ്കിലും, സേവിങ്സ് അക്കൌണ്ടില്‍ നിക്ഷെപിക്കുന്നതിനേക്കാളും ആദായകരവും സൌകര്യപ്രദവും ആയിരിക്കും എന്നതില്‍ സംശയമില്ല.

വര്‍ഷത്തിന്റെ ഇടയ്ക്ക് നിക്ഷേപിക്കുന്നവര്‍ക്ക് വര്‍ഷാവസാനം Tier 4 ന്റെ നിരക്കില്‍ (അതായത് പൂര്‍ണ്ണ വാര്‍ഷിക നിരക്ക്) തന്നെ ലാഭ വിഹിതം നല്‍കുന്നതായിരിക്കും. പക്ഷെ ലാഭവിഹിതം ലഭിച്ച ശേഷം ഒരു വര്‍ഷം പൂര്‍ത്തിയാകുന്നതിന്‍ മുമ്പ് (അതായത് നിക്ഷേപിച്ച തീയതി മുതല്‍ ഒരു വര്‍ഷം) പിന്‍-വലിക്കുകയാണെങ്കില്‍, അധികം നല്‍കിയ ലാഭവിഹിതം ബോണ്ട്സില്‍ നിന്ന് കുറക്കുന്നതായിരിക്കും.

നാഷണല്‍ ബോണ്ട്സില്‍ മിനിമം 100 രൂപമുതല്‍ എത്രയും നിക്ഷേപിക്കാം. ഒരു മാസത്തിന് ശേഷം എപ്പോള്‍ വേണമെങ്കിലും പിന്‍-വലിക്കാം. ലാഭവിഹിതം വര്‍ഷാവസാനം മാത്രമേ ലഭിക്കുകയുള്ളൂ. ആഴ്ചതോറും നടക്കുന്ന നറുക്കെടുപ്പാണ് ഇതിന്റെ മുഖ്യ ആകര്‍ഷണം. ആഴ്ചതോറും നറുക്കെടുപ്പില്‍ വിജയികളാകുന്ന 5,135 പേര്‍ക്ക് 100 ദിര്‍ഹം മുതല്‍ 10,000 ദിര്‍ഹം വരെയും മാസത്തില്‍ ഒരാള്‍ക്ക് 1 മില്ല്യന്‍ ദിര്‍ഹവും സമ്മാനമായി ലഭിക്കുന്നു. കൂടാതെ ബോണ്ടില്‍ നിക്ഷെപിക്കുന്നവര്‍ക്ക് ലൈഫ് ഇന്‍ഷുറന്‍സ് (Islamic Insurance - Takaful) പരിരക്ഷയും ലഭിക്കുന്നു.

A trip to Liwa, Abu Dhabi

I first heard about Liwa a couple of years ago while reading about the date festival which is conducted in Liwa during summer. Since then I was looking to visit there. I tried to know more about Liwa, I googled with different key words, browsed through a number of Abu Dhabi's official websites, but there was no much information available. All I could knew was that it is a large oasis consists of some 50 villages, with date farms and other agricultural activities. I recently read that the Liwa has the one of the largest dunes in the world. I also could read that it has come in the radar of tourism and some efforts are being made by the authorities to promote its tourism possibilities.

I am very passionate about beauty of nature with natural water resources, rivers, hills, forests and greeneries, agriculture and the likes. It is nostalgic to see all those things as being in the Dubai for last 10 or more years leaving such a beautiful village in southern Indian state of Kerala where I was born and brought up and lived for more than 24 years!

I discussed about visiting Liwa with a couple of family friends, but I could not find much interest from them to see such an unknown place which have nothing exciting to boast about which is some 350 km far from Dubai. Finally I decided to go alone with my family. She is very much with me for my passion to drive through the villages and our children enjoy it too.

Liwa is in the western region of Abu Dhabi which is know as Al Gharbia, 240 km away from Abu Dhabi City. I started from Jebel Ali at 7.30am setting my trip odometer to zero. The route is E11 (Sheikh Zayed Road) from Dubai toward Abu Dhbai and head towards to Gweifat/Tariff staying in E11 without turning to E10 which goes to Abu Dhabi City. When we usually go straight to Abu Dhabi from Dubai, at the Shahama, the road becomes E10 without you notice it and a bridge that turns to left is actually E11. I realised this fact only on this trip as I reached Abu Dhabi city and wasted more than 50 km drive.

Instead of taking the route marked green, I missed the exit at Al Shahama and headed towards Abu Dhabi City and then got back in to the right route travelling through the route marked in red. If you are in Abu Dhabi City, drive towards direction of airport/Al Ain looking for the direction sign towards Gwaifat (E11). Once turned right towards Gwaifat, the direction boards shows Al Ain (E22) and Tariff (E11). Then after a few kilo meters, turn right at the direction sign Tariff and Gwaifat. At this point, it was 158 km in my trip odometer. (Started from Jabel Ali, came through Abu Dhabi City. I drove approximately 50 km more by going to Abu Dhabi City).

This route is to the Sila, the boarder town with the Saudi Arabia. The sea on right side, the desert on the left, small palm trees on both sides of the road - This is the view throughout this route.

After driving further 76km, take the exit at the direction sign Madinat Zayed and Liwa (Mezaira'a). 3km before this exit, there is a petrol pump at Abu Al Abyed. From this exit, it is 50km to Madinat Zayed and 120km to Mezaira'a, the centre of Liwa. You can see the alternation of forest belts, agriculture and sand dunes throughout this route.

When we reached the village Thamaniya which is about 20km before Liwa, it was time for Friday Prayer. We found a mosque there. It was bigger than expected and the people were even more than it can accommodate. Most of them were labours working in the farms in the village. They seems to be from Bangladesh.

Finally we reached at Liwa at 1.30pm and it was 355km in my trip odometer. Before reaching the town is the Liwa Hospital, Liwa Palace and Liwa Souque.

Mureeb Dunes (Tal Mireb) some 25 km away from the city is one of the largest dunes in the world. About 20km road to the Mureeb Dunes is through small and large sand dunes and it is a pleasant driving experience.

We returned from Liwa at 4.10pm and it was 440km in trip odometer. We took the different route back to Abu Dhabi through the eastern villages of Liwa. We reached Hameem which is 65km from Liwa city and end of the Liwa oasis at 4.45pm. On reaching here, the first sign board appears for direction to Abu Dhabi. It is 195km to Abu Dhabi from here. 141km stretch from Hameem to the entry point on E11 is two-way and speed limit is 80kmph. But I don't think any one would drive below 120km/h as it was that smooth and free of any vehicle. This road intersects with the E11 at 20km from Abu Dhbai.

പുസ്തകങ്ങള്‍ വായിക്കാന്‍ ...

വര്‍ത്തമാന പത്രങ്ങളും വാര്‍ത്താധിഷ്ടിത പ്രസിദ്ധീകരണങ്ങളും മാത്രം വായിക്കാറുള്ള ഞാന്‍ നല്ല പുസ്തകങ്ങള്‍ വായിച്ചുതുടങ്ങണം എന്ന ആഗ്രഹത്തോടെയാണ് ദുബൈ പബ്ലിക് ലൈബ്രറിയില്‍ ഒരു മെംബര്‍ഷിപ്പ് എടുക്കുവാന്‍ തീരുമാനിച്ചത്. മാസങ്ങള്‍ രണ്ട് കഴിഞ്ഞെങ്കിലും ഞാന്‍ പുസ്തകം മാത്രം വായിച്ചില്ല. എങ്കിലും അന്ന് ഫാമിലി മെംബറ്ഷിപ്പ് എടുക്കുവാന്‍ തോന്നിയത് ഏതായാലും നന്നായി - ഞാന്‍ വായന തുടങ്ങിയില്ലെങ്കിലും കുട്ടികള്‍ വായന ആസ്വദിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നു, എന്തിന് പുസ്തക കൈ കൊണ്ട് തൊടാത്ത റുബീന ഇപ്പോള്‍ വായിച്ചു തുടങ്ങിയിരിക്കുന്നു. ഏതായാലും മെംബര്‍ഷിപ്പ് വേസ്റ്റായില്ല. അവരെ മൂന്നാഴ്ചയിലൊരിക്കല്‍ അവിടെ കൊണ്ട്പോകണമെന്ന് മാത്രം.

കഴിഞ്ഞാഴ്ച പോയപ്പോള്‍ റുബീനയും കുട്ടികളും പുസ്തകം സെലക്സ്റ്റ് ചെയ്യുന്ന സമയം ഞാന്‍ അവിടെ കണ്ട ടൈംസ് ഓഫ് ഇന്ത്യയുടെ മുംബൈ എഡിഷന്‍ വായിച്ച് ഇരുന്നു. പത്രങ്ങള്‍ ഓണ്‍ലൈനില്‍ ലഭ്യമാണെങ്കിലും നാട്ടിലെ എഡിഷന്‍ വായിക്കുന്നത് ഒരു പ്രത്യേക സുഖമാണ്. അതിലെ പരസ്യങ്ങളും ഫീച്ചറുകളും നാട്ടിലെ മാറുന്ന ജീവിത രീതികളിലേക്കും പുതിയ ഡെവലപ്പ്മെന്റ്സുകളിലേക്കും വെളിച്ചം വീശുന്നു. ശരിക്കും പരസ്യങ്ങളും വാര്‍ത്തകളെ പോലെ തന്നെ വിവരങ്ങള്‍ നല്‍കുന്നതില്‍ പ്രധാനമാണെന്നാണ് എന്റെ വിശ്വാസം. ഇന്റലിന്റെ ഏറ്റവും പുതിയ പ്രോസസറുള്ള ബ്രാന്റന്റ് കമ്പ്യൂട്ടറുകളുടെ ഒത്തിരി പരസ്യങ്ങള്‍ കണ്ടു. വില ഇവിടെത്തേതിനേക്കാളും കൂടുതലാണ്. റിയല് എസ്റ്റേറ്റ് ഫീച്ചറുകളും പുള്‍ഔട്ടുകളും പരസ്യങ്ങളുമൊക്കെ കണ്ടപ്പോള്‍ രണ്ട് വര്‍ഷം മുമ്പത്തെ ദുബൈ ഓര്‍മ്മ വന്നു.

ഇക്കഴിഞ്ഞ വാരന്ത്യത്തില്‍ കുട്ടികള്‍ കുറച്ച് വരയുടെയും ക്രാഫ്റ്റ്സിന്റേയും ഒക്കെ പുസ്തകങ്ങള്‍ കൂട്ടത്തില്‍ എടുത്തു. തിരിച്ച് വന്ന ഉടനെ വളരെ ആവേശമായിരുന്നു. പുസ്തകത്തില്‍ നിന്ന് കിട്ടിയ ഇന്‍സ്പിരേഷനില്‍ എന്തൊക്കെയോ വരച്ചും എന്തൊക്കെയോ ഉണ്ടാക്കിയും ഓരോ ആളും മത്സരിച്ച് കൊണ്ട് വന്ന് കാണിക്കുന്നുണ്ടായിരുന്നു.
