According to a study in Michigan, bacon is an effective way to treat nasal hemorrhaging. You don’t get the benefit of the marvelous taste and smell, but hey – you can’t have everything.

A new medical study recommends a method called “nasal packing with strips of cured pork” as an effective way to treat uncontrollable nosebleeds.

Ian Humphreys, Sonal Saraiya, Walter Belenky and James Dworkin, at Detroit Medical Centre in Michigan, treated a girl who had a rare hereditary disorder that brings prolongued bleeding. Publishing in the Annals of Otology, Rhinology and Laryngology, they pack the essential details into two sentences:

“Cured salted pork crafted as a nasal tampon and packed within the nasal vaults successfully stopped nasal hemorrhage promptly, effectively, and without sequelae … To our knowledge, this represents the first description of nasal packing with strips of cured pork for treatment of life-threatening hemorrhage in a patient with Glanzmann thrombasthenia.”

They acknowledge a long tradition of using pork to treat general epistaxis, ie nosebleed. The technique fell into disuse, they speculate, because “packing with salt pork was fraught with bacterial and parasitic complications. As newer synthetic hemostatic agents and surgical techniques evolved, the use of packing with salt pork diminished.”

Dozens of Occupy Oakland demonstrators burned an American flag and marched through the streets Saturday night, a week after police fired tear gas to quell violent demonstrations and hundreds were arrested following a mass break-in at City Hall.

About 70 Occupy demonstrators began marching around 9 p.m. from City Hall en route to police headquarters, but a line of officers quickly blocked their path. Protesters veered off and began a winding, five-mile walk through city streets that ended nearly two hours later at their starting point. Following close behind was a caravan of police cars and vans, but there were no clashes between the groups or any other signs of violence.

Saturday’s action was aimed at protesting what they claim was abuse at the hands of officers during last Saturday’s protest that peaked with rock and bottle throwing from protesters and volleys of tear gas in response from the police. Following the march, the demonstrators congregated around City Hall as the protest wound down.

“It went well,” said Chris Moreland, who used a bull horn to help lead the march. “As long as we don’t destroy anything, the police don’t care.” ”It’s a win-win situation for everybody,” Moreland, 23, told The Associated Press. “We get our message across and they (police) get paid.” Police said that they had a strategy in place in the event the protest got out of hand, warning that vandalism and violence will not be tolerated.

“Although social media sites had indicated that individuals or groups planned a, `militant, radical march’ and asked peaceful bystanders to not interfere with criminal tactics, the march this evening overall was peaceful,” police spokeswoman Johnna A. Watson said.

Television stations said that at one point some protesters threw a bottle of urine at a KTVU truck and a wooden board at a KPIX truck.

Improvement or not, I don’t see this kind of activity as a win for anybody. Funny – I never learned in my upbringing and schooling that throwing rocks and bottles at the police, destroying property, urinating on police vehicles and burning the American flag constituted a legitimate form of protest. If these people hate America so much, and feel that they just can’t tolerate living here, why don’t they just go somewhere that people embrace this kind of foolishness, like Europe?  That Democrats showed any support for these people is disturbing.

Meanwhile, the unemployment rate fell to 8.3%. That is the lowest since February 2009.

Hiring was much stronger than expected, and once it was apparent the job gains were broad based across several sectors, economists and investors called it a “nice surprise,” “fantastic,” and even “a touchdown!” Stocks climbed at the market open.

Yay! Hurrah! That’s great news. Love the Super Bowl weekend touchdown metaphor. Obama is leading us back from the precipice, or something. But wait – it’s all phony. The Bureau of Labor Statistics is basically ignoring the fact that the denominator in the unemployment equation got a lot smaller last month. A month ago, we joked when we said that for Obama to get the unemployment rate to negative by election time, all he has to do is to crush the labor force participation rate to about 55%. Looks like the good folks at the BLS heard us: it appears that the people not in the labor force exploded by an unprecedented record 1.2 million. No, that’s not a typo:1.2 million people dropped out of the labor force in one month! So as the labor force increased from 153.9 million to 154.4 million, the non institutional population increased by 242.3 million meaning, those not in the labor force surged from 86.7 million to 87.9 million. Which means that the civilian labor force tumbled to a fresh 30 year low of 63.7% as the BLS is seriously planning on eliminating nearly half of the available labor pool from the unemployment calculation.

President Obama’s former Chrysler 300C failed to sell for $1 million in an eBay auction.

The 2005 Chrysler, that Obama leased while he was a both an Illinois state senator and a U.S. senator, was listed on eBay last week by its current owner for a million dollars — up dramatically from the $100,000 price that it listed for on eBay in 2008. The owner is likely to try to sell the car again.

“We’re trying to talk him into rerunning it now and making some changes to (the listing),” the eBay selling conducting the auction on behalf of the owner told the Chicago Tribune. “Lowering the price, and contacting Obama to find out if there’s a charity he’d like us to donate some of the profits to.”
