Mariah lends her voice to fight cancer

What would it sound like if 15 of the hottest female singers joined voices? The answer will be revealed Sept. 2.

That's when "Just Stand Up" hits airwaves and iTunes. The song features Mariah Carey, Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Rihanna, Fergie, Sheryl Crow, Miley Cyrus, Melissa Etheridge, Ashanti, Natasha Bedingfield, Keyshia Cole, Ciara, Leona Lewis, LeAnn Rimes and Carrie Underwood. All sales of the star-studded single will benefit cancer research.

The charity tune was conceived by Antonio "L.A." Reid, who produced it with longtime creative colleague Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds.

All 15 singers will share the stage to perform the song live on Sept. 5 during the "Stand Up to Cancer" television special, set to air simultaneously on ABC, NBC and CBS. Other stars expected to turn out for the hourlong fund- and awareness-raising program include Jennifer Aniston, Lance Armstrong, Katie Couric, Sally Field, Salma Hayek, Meryl Streep, Forest Whitaker and Reese Witherspoon.

Founded in 2007, Stand Up to Cancer is a program of the Entertainment Industry Foundation that calls on entertainment-industry people and platforms to help fight cancer.

J.J. Gets A Relly Nomination!

Early nominees for the 6th Annual Relly Awards were announced yesterday on the Regis and Kelly morning talk show. Mariah's puppy J.J. who joined her in her most recent appearance on the show (April 25, 2008) received a nomination in the "Best Non-Human Guest" category.

Voting for this Rellys category will take place online on Tuesday, August 26th following Live with Regis and Kelly. Good luck, J.J.!

Mariah to Perform at the 5th Annual FASHION ROCKS

Fashion Rocks first took New York Fashion Week by storm in 2004 and it still remains the hottest ticket of the season. Condé Nast Media Group celebrates the fifth anniversary of Fashion Rocks with an unprecedented line-up of performers including: Mariah Carey, Black Eyed Peas, Chris Brown, Justin Timberlake, Keith Urban, Beyonce and Rihanna among others.

The legendary Radio City Music Hall will once again play host to the star-studded live event on September 5, 2008, celebrating the powerful relationship between fashion and music. Lady Mariah's third single from 11th album "E=MC²"--following chart-topping "Touch My Body" and top 20 "Bye Bye"--energizes the beat following the previous pair of midtempo soul tracks. "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" offers a playful, beach-befitting groove, featuring a bright sample from DeBarge's "Stay With Me," lushly woven vocals and Carey's highs doting on fans with her sonic signature. T.I. joins the party with a rap that adds star power, if in a dated context. Beyond radio appeal, "Lovin' " is featured in an Indaba Music remix contest, with a ,000 prize for the victor. Curiously, it garnered dubious acclaim as Carey's first single to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 as low as No. 100, but that's surely a temporary blip; it's already charted as her 45th entry on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. Over the years, many have dismissed Mariah Carey as nothing more than a freakish vocal acrobat. Her melismatic runs commonly hit a dozen or more tones in a single syllable, and her range pierces the whistle register; few but dolphins can sing higher. Some sneered at her weakness for hot pants and halters in the 1990s; others called Carey a lightweight because of her kitschy passion for butterflies and Hello Kitty. (She has described herself as being "eternally twelve" innumerable times). Yet in fact, Mariah Carey is Long Island's answer to Dolly Parton, a woman whose bodacious body and over-the-top style have distracted many people from her rare and substantial talent.

By the time you read this, Carey's newest single will probably have inched her one notch closer to overtaking the Beatles' world record for the most number-one songs. (They had 20. This spring, she knocked Elvis Presley out of second place with "Touch My Body," her eighteenth.) At the age of 38, Mariah Carey is the best-selling female recording artist in history. She has written and produced more number one songs than any other female composer or producer, and was the first mainstream artist to blend pop with R&B and hip-hop.

Carey's multiethnic background is often cited as a source of her eclectic sound and style. (She was raised by her mother, an opera singer of Irish heritage, and barely knew her father, an aeronautical engineer who was part African-American and Venezuelan). Less noted, but equally important, is her ambiguous class identification. As with most bling-besotted female singers, Carey's aspiration to G4 style seems an effort to make up for her bridge-and-tunnel background. Unlike some other strivers', though, her reaching seems optimistic, not angry. Carey's appeal, again like Parton's, owes much to her mirthful candor about the longing that drives her. "From the time I was little, I had such a huge desire, and such an enormous ambition, driven mainly by the fact that I didn't have the money to get the latest outfits, or even really enough food," she says. When describing her new love -after a courtship that lasted exactly one month, Carey was married in April to the 27-year-old actor and rapper Nick Cannon - she roots her remarks within a childhood memory: "When I was a kid there was an ice storm in the suburbs," she says. "We went to Manhattan to stay with a friend of my mom's. There was nobody on the road. It was this moment that could have been scary for a kid, but she made it festive. That's what Nick is like: He takes the hard part of a situation and makes it celebratory."

These days, Carey has much to celebrate. In addition to the success of her new album, E=MC², which debuted at number one, she won praise at the Tribeca Film Festival for her performance as a waitress in the independent movie Tennessee. Next, she'll play a social worker in a film adaptation of Sapphire's verse novel PUSH, then make a feature-length HBO musical adaptation of Merry Christmas, her 1994 holiday album - which is, by the way, the best-selling Christmas album... of all time.--Michael Joseph Gross, Fashion Rocks magazine

Last night, Mariah performed at this year's Samsung AT&T SummerKrush series opener in Hollywood, California, where hundreds of fans, including fifty lucky HBF winners gathered to see a set of five of the best MC songs from her past two albums. Mariah started off the show with a medley of "Touch My Body" and "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time". She was then joined by Young Jeezy for a performance of "Side Effects" (E=MC²). Following those two songs which later aired on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Mariah entertained the crowd with extra performances of the fan-favorites "I'm That Chick", "Shake It Off" and "We Belong Together".

Jimmy Kimmel then interviewed Mariah who talked about her marriage, the experience of swimming with dolphins in Hawaii for the video of "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" and her new perfume "Luscious Pink". (Watch the interview: Part 1, Part 2.)

I thought the whole concert was absolutely amazing! Side Effects is by far my favorite song on the album and she was soo emotional during it!

fabulousmoolah: I've just seen the mashup and OMG MC is freakin amazing!!! Her voice was just soooooo on point, I can't get over it. Obviously performing at night suits her, the crowd looked so fun.

Mariah Carey Inspires An 'Amazing, Incredible Moment' For One MTV News Staffer

Yesterday afternoon, while John Norris was interviewing Mariah Carey in the greenroom after "TRL," I was in shock because I was able to attend. I was trying to get my eyes to adjust to the ice on her finger & wrist (which was pretty fantastic), when John asked how she felt about Barack Obama having a shot at the presidency. Being that I'm of mixed heritage as well, I perked up to hear her answer -- and I was in for a surprise.

First of all, you need to know that when John asks an artist a question, 10 times out of 10, the answer is about them -- even if the question is about someone else. So when John asked about Obama, I was not expecting Mariah to turn her head, look directly at me and say, "I have another biracial partner in this room right here, and we met on an MTV moment. I know I'm not directly [answering the question], but can we discuss this?" As my face flushed, the camera turned to me, and John put the microphone in my face. What was going on? This does not happen. "Can you tell us?" she asked. "Can you explain how we met and how we connected?" I was so embarrassed and I said so, not because Mariah asked me a question, but because everyone was suddenly staring at me.

"Why is it embarrassing?" she asked me.

Um, maybe because Mariah is supposed to be the focus of the interview, not me! But I put my game face on and told the story of how we met.

I began to rattle on -- at a very accelerated speed, I might add -- about how we met on MTV's "Shining Through the Rain" special back in 2002 when I was given the chance to interview her. I cried, she cried, we all cried. Hugs were given and a weight was lifted off of my chest because I was finally able to tell Mariah how she changed my life. She helped me to see the beauty of being mixed and how I could "make it through the rain" regardless of those trying to bring me down in my small town. Trying not to cry, yet again, I explained that ever since that moment, she has never forgotten me, always included me on events and made a point of making me feel special at every turn. A diva? Maybe for those tabloid stories. For me? Just an amazingly real woman who can make you feel love with every smile and embrace.

I continued on about my journey to get where I'm at now. I have a job here at MTV News and couldn't be happier. I had realized that I could do whatever I wanted and told her it was all because of her.

"Yeah!" Mariah said to me. "Look at that success story! Darling, it's because of you."

Then she turned back to John and said, "The point is, there's a lot of us [with biracial backgrounds]. It was difficult for me growing up to have someone where I could say, 'I look up to this person, I fully relate to this person,' and I felt like an outcast, an outsider." So Barack Obama having a shot at the White House, she said, "couldn't be more exciting to me. It's an amazing, incredible moment." As far as Mariah goes, I'll be lovin' her long time. And it was an incredible moment for me too.

Summertime is here and MC is heating things up again with her third single from E=MC2. The tempo-driven "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" was a track that we first picked when we heard the album and it's even better now with the addition of a new re-mix featuring Hip-Hop star T.I. It's a total "groove record" whose retro feel is a breath of fresh air for a format that often puts more emphasis on beats and not necessarily melody. This MC track has both and is sure to connect with MC's core fans and beyond. BET ON IT!

        Australia        Sunrise entertainment reporter James Tobin flew to Tokyo to interview Mariah and brought a special gift with him - a 1.2 carat, 114-diamond-encrusted butterfly brooch as a "get talking" gift. Mariah revealed that having a family has become her No. 1 priority.

On Wednesday, May 28th, Mariah threw the ceremonial first pitch in the Yomiuri Giants vs. Rakuten Eagles baseball match in Tokyo. Mariah will be appearing in the MTV Japan Video Music Awards which will take place on Saturday, May 31st in Tokyo.

The format icon claimed her first top 10 (and first of seven No. 1s) with "Dreamlover." Of the acts with at least 10 top 10s at the format, only Janet and R. Kelly have had head starts over Carey. Before "Dreamlover" bowed in August 1993, R. Mariah Attends The Operation Smile Gala

Last night, Mariah attended the 5th annual Operation Smile gala in New York City. Operation Smile ("Changing Lives One Smile at a Time") is a worldwide charity organization whose mission is to repair childhood facial deformities while building public and private partnerships that advocate for sustainable healthcare systems for children and families. Mariah has been a supporter of Operation Smile for the past five years and attended various fund-raising events including The Smile Collection fundraising event in New York in 2006. Last year, Mariah was named a Smile Ambassador by the operation.

Mariah Gets Ellen On Board Love Train

Dancing talk show host Ellen DeGeneres just hitched a ride on the Mariah Carey love train, which made a pit stop on her show today.

Carey, 38, who was recently swept off her feet by actor Nick Cannon, 27, who she secretly wed during a romantic ceremony on the beach, has been gushing about her wedding, her enormous rock and the possibility of having babies in the future.

Carey spread the love to DeGeneres when she surprised her with sexy lingerie for her birthday.

DeGeneres indulged Carey and her audience by trying it on over her clothes, which spiced things up for daytime TV and needless to say made for a good laugh since the quirky talk show host is usually very casually dressed.

During the interview, DeGeneres pointed out Mariah's eye-catching wedding ring.

"Let's talk about the ring first. Show this ring. Look at that ring! That is gorgeous and his ring is pretty amazing too," DeGeneres raved.

"I like his ring a lot," Carey said. "We designed each other's rings."

Cannon worked closely with Jacob Arabo of Jacob & Co. to create the one-of-a-kind ring, the company said in a statement.

The ring, which is valued at .5 million, is crafted from platinum and features a square emerald cut fancy light pink diamond as the center stone surrounded by 58 intense pink diamonds and two half moon diamonds on each side. The center stone alone weighs 10 carats, and the total carat weight of the ring is 17 carats.

To avoid hordes of media bombarding the wedding, Carey said that she and Cannon were telling everyone it was a video shoot.

"He pretty much did the secretive stuff that I wasn't aware of...but I did say (to the media) we are doing a video shoot, figuring that we might end up doing that (getting married), " Carey said.

According to Mariah, there weren't a lot guests in attendance at the wedding, but they managed to lure a few friends to the island.

"Mainly it was people there to do my hair and help me with the dress, Carey said. "And, then three of my friends and he had three people with him, so it wasn't a lot of people because we wanted to be on the beach and we didn't want other people taking pictures."

"We both experienced the Hoopla of trying to make something a publicity stunt, which is what everybody thinks, and will think anyway, but we don't really care about that. Instead of trying to be like, 'you're invited, but, shhh, don't tell anybody' we're just going to have another one (wedding) next year," Carey revealed.

There will be more wedding bells in the future for Carey - every year for that matter.

Since money is no object for the pop diva, the happy couple can afford to do just that.

"His plan is to have one every year," Carey said.

When DeGeneres asked who proposed to whom, Carey was quick to dismiss the idea that she would do the proposing.

"He proposed to me. I would never propose to someone," said Carey, who was previously married to music mogul Tommy Mottola from 1993 to 1998.

Cannon was also previously engaged to Victoria's Secret model Selita Ebanks for a few months in 2007.

DeGeneres inquired about the possibility of the couple having children.

"I always said ... if I found the right person who I felt would be on the same page as me in term of raising kids and having the same belief system and not having one parent going 'don't do this' and the other's going 'this is the best,'" Carey said. "I've always had a weird thing about it because my parents divorced when I was three and I didn't have many examples of what was the 'norm.' "

"Most of us didn't I think ... ," DeGeneres said.

That playful romp is followed by a reminder that Mimi is as capable of putting a weighty message in front without sacrificing melodic juice. "Bye Bye" offers comfort for anyone suffering loss: "This is for my peoples who just lost somebody, your best friend, your baby, your man or your lady/Lift your head to the sky, cos we will never say bye." A tinkly piano-driven groove escorts the lyrical embrace, with oozy synths, a flush of R&B via male shout-outs of "Eh!" and a vocal that builds to a fitting tour-de-force crescendo, though pushed down in the mix to maintain decorum. "VIBE and Mariah do go back like babies and pacifiers. There was a Mariah cover in April 1996, around the time of Daydream. That excellent story was written by Elysa Gardner (now of USA Today). In 2003, around the time of Charmbracelet, Lola Ogunnaike (now of CNN's American Morning) wrote another fantastic cover piece.

As for myself, in 1998, when I was editor-in-chief the first time, I flew to San Francisco (on Mariah time, you have to be ready to get up and go anywhere at a moment's notice) and then rode north to hilly Sonoma County, in Northern California's wine country. Carey and I drank red wine until late into the night. She'd just left her marriage. I think she was releasing a greatest hits package (#1's). She was in a good, if tough, space. That space from which good art and new beauty is sometimes born. She was fun. And open. Soon after, she went through some well-documented rough times. But she's been back for a while, and the new album is an homage to Einstein's theory of relativity, first introduced in a 1905 paper called, "Does The Inertia of a Body Depend Upon Its Energy Content?" I thought you knew.

People forget, because Mariah is so pretty and so about hair and boobs and antics, that she is a songwriter who will go down in history as one of the best, one of the most prolific, and one of the most successful. The sales and radio records she's breaking are mammoth, and crucial too--because with every one she topples, it's clearer that Miss Carey is the true People's Choice. She writes and sings music that people sing to themselves, music that we move our bodies to. She is redefining--in these complicated cultural times, times in which niches are nich-ier than ever, times in which even the sale of creative content is in question--what it is to be popular (believed, embraced, or perpetuated by ordinary people). She's buttah fly, for sure.

Mariah says the road to success wasn't easy. Earlier in her career, she often was unhappy but kept it to herself, she says. "When I was a little depressed inside, I would fake a smile and deal with the side effects," she says. "But nobody knew that--a lot of the worst times were not when people thought they were bad times."

Now, she says she is in a great place in her life. Her single "Touch My Body" has hit the number one spot on the Billboard charts, and Mariah says she's embracing her identity, which she says includes being a little bit of a diva. "I think I'm high maintenance, but I maintain my own self," she says. "It's not just the diva stuff; it's an emotional need that I have to protect myself."

Mariah attended the glamorous premiere with the film's producer Lee Daniels, director Aaron Woodley and the film's main cast members. The legendary Robert DeNiro who is the festival's founder also came to show his support. In the film, Mariah plays Krystal, a struggling waitress who aspires to be a singer. To honor Mariah Carey, the #1 most successful female recording artist of all time, The Empire State Building in NYC was lit up this past weekend (April 25th - 28th) in Mariah's honor. A lighting ceremony took place at the Empire State Building on Friday April 25th, where Mariah flipped the light switch on a scale model of the Empire State Building. The Empire State Building Tower was lit in lavender, pink and white lights all weekend to celebrate the album color motif of Mariah's new # 1 album E=MC2. Antonio "LA" Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group attended the ceremony with Mariah to help celebrate this momentous occasion.

Yesterday at the Empire it was sooo hot!!! Mariah was completely relaxed and she wasn't rushed so it was nice to meet her in a setting like that I won the tickets so me and Davidia were the only ones, besides the press, that went up to the top of the Empire with her... we actually went in the elevator with AJ who used to work on BET and now I think he is on E and he chatted with us for a little. Da Brat was there and Nick Cannon. After all the press was done, they brought Mariah over to us and she just stayed with us for about 10 min. I showed her my phone and she grabbed and she is like awwww how festive!! And then we take 2 pics and she is like are you sure you like them? Because we can take more if you don't like them... so I told her anything with you and me in it of course I will love lol and she laughed... it was so nice to have her in a relaxed environment because we could actually chat a little and no one was telling us no don't do this don't do that it was just so much fun!

Yesterday was the best day with Mariah ever! When we got to the Empire there was Press everywhere waiting for Mariah. It was so cool. I seen Maryann and said hi. L.A. Reid, Benny, Shawn, Mark, Rachel, Da Brat, AJ where all there. Everyone kept complimenting me on my shirt. All Mariah's people were all laid back which I really enjoyed. Lynn and I got interviewed by a few Press. One of them asked us why do we like mariah? U know we gave a flantastic answer! One of the best parts was going at the top of the Empire State Building with Mariah. We spent a good time up there with her. Pic time was the best lmao. Mariah told me she remembered me.
