Today I have a Clean and Simple card to share with you. I went for a monochromatic, slightly vintage look for this card - perfect for Father's Day or a male birthday card. The Tool Shed background stamp is a natural match-up with the Totally Tool stamp set. Totally Tool is a great stamp set for masculine cards. Unfortunately, it is retiring at the end of the month. I'm so sad... this is one I won't be selling! I love the sentiments that accompany the images! Of course, you can always use markers on just the tools to stamp them alone, which I did on the inside of the card. Enjoy!

GARDEN PARTY PETITE PURSES: Tips on Keeping the Pattern Straight with the Petite Purse Die...

Tomorrow night it is my turn to host my monthly Bunco group. I always make little favors for everyone to go home with. This year my theme is a Garden Tea Party, so I decided that the adorable purses made with the Petite Purse Die were just the the thing! Two Ghiradelli Chocolate Squares will fit perfectly inside the purses. Unfortunately I didn't check the pictures I took and they are a little fuzzy. So there are two photos, one with the front four purses in focus and one with the back purses in focus. Sorry about that!

I used the Dotted Scallop Ribbon Border Punch for the base under the purse handle for added strength and a lacy touch. Most of the brads I used are retiring on May 31. They are available while supplies last only and many of them are on sale!

The cutting pattern for the purse is tipped at an angle on the die. That is not a problem when cutting solid colored card stock. However, when using Designer Series Papers with patterns that are not random, if you place the DSP straight on the die, your purse pattern will look crooked once it is assembled.

How can you cut the paper so that the pattern will be straight?
Try this tip for placing DSP on the die, so that your purse pattern will be straight. Be sure to bookmark this post, so that you can use it once you can order these dies again on June 1.

Place a strip of masking tape on your die that is parallel with the straight part of the bottom of of the die cut and about 1/2" away from it. This will allow the paper to completely cover the cutting area of the die. Use a ruler to be sure it is perfectly aligned. Please note: I allow for a very narrow margin in covering the cutting area on my die. The measurements given are a bit more than you see on my die. You may be more comfortable with an even more generous allowance.
Place another strip of masking tape perpendicular to the purse bottom. I used a square to determine the angle. Be sure to allow for enough space that the paper will completely cover the cutting area.
You can place another strip of masking tape on the left side perpendicular to the purse bottom, if desired. After you have placed all masking tape, you can trim the outside edges until even with the edge of the foam as I did.

Cut a piece of DSP to 5-3/4" x 8". Place the DSP so that it just meets up with the bottom and right pieces of masking tape and cut.

FANCY FOLDS FRIDAY, Graduation Day Cap Fold & Punch Art...

My youngest daughter graduated from college tonight and this is the card I made for her. I cased the fold from Dawn Olechefske.and then used Colleen's favorite colors - red & black for the card. For the tassels, I just frayed or "shredded" grosgrain ribbon.

This is what you see when you open the card up. Of course, I had to include a little punch art with this wise little owl in his cap & gown! To pump up his eyes, I added Crystal Effects to the black circles.

GRADUATION CAP FOLD DIRECTIONS:
1. Cut Basic Black Card Stock to 4-1/4" x 9-3/4". In the landscape position, score the card @ 5.5".
2. Place your card on your Stampin' Up! Grid with the fold at the left and the shorter front facing up.
3. On each side of the card, make a pencil mark 2-1/8" from the fold.
4. Turn the card over and repeat the pencil marks on each side.
5. Open the card up and mark the center point (2-1/8") of the top edge (short side) of the card.
6. With the scoring blade on your paper trimmer, or your Simple Scored Board, score diagonally from the upper left side pencil mark to the lower right side pencil mark.
7. Now score diagonally from the upper right pencil mark to the lower left pencil mark. This will form an X with the center on the fold line. Fold on the diagonal score lines.
8. With your paper trimmer, cut from the mark made earlier on the top edge of the card (short side) diagonally to the top of your right score line (2-1/8" as marked). Repeat on the other side. Erase any remaining pencil lines.
9. Fold the sides of the cap in towards the center. You are finished! Decorate as desired.

Today I have a frilly card to share with you from one of my beginner stamping classes. I kept the sentiment generic so that it could work for different occasions. It features the retiring Triple Treat Flower stamp and 5-Petal Punch. It is such a fun stamp! It makes it so easy to build a nice dimensional focal piece with just one stamp! It took me a while to warm up to this one, but once I did, I really loved it. So sad now that it is retiring! Ditto for the gorgeous Flirtatious Specialty DSP. Those lacy doilies are just to die for. Q. What’s included in the new version of the software?

Q. What is the difference between MDS 2 and MDS 2+?

COLLEEN'S ANGRY BIRDS PUNCH ART BIRTHDAY CARD...

Happy Birthday to my baby girl who is 26 today! I always struggle with making her cards. She's not a girly girl and I've already done cards with many of her interests. I thought about a Mario card and I still may do that one in the future. I ended up deciding on an Angry Birds card as she has been playing it a lot after finding it recently. So, of course, that meant I would be using Punch Art for this one. I found a picture online (see below the card) and used it as my inspiration. I did have to move the birds around to fit them all on the card, but otherwise, they are pretty close to the picture.

The sentiments I used were from the fun Smarty Pants stamp set for the front and On Your Birthday set for the inside. These have been two of my favorite sentiment sets and I am so sad that they are retiring at the end of the month - especially Smarty Pants! Be sure to get them before they go! Here is the inside of the card:

This card was definitely a labor of love! There was a lot of hand-cutting in this one to shape the beaks especially. They all started with one petal of the 5-Petal Punch and were then cut and shaped. This punch and several others are retiring. Don't miss out on them! As a punch art enthusiast, I am a firm believer in needing EVERY punch! LOL. Most of the other punching was just done on the edge and around as most of my punch art. Enjoy!

SIMPLE SUNDAY, Tea for Two

Today I wanted to use up some scrap pieces that have accumulated on my desk, so I pulled out some previously rejected teacups I made with the Tea Shoppe stamp set from the Occasions Mini Catalog ending tomorrow. All I had to do was stamp the sentiment, run the card front through the Big Shot with the embossing folder, add some color specks with the Color Spritzer and pop the teacups out on Dimensionals.

To get the mirror image tea cup, I simply stamped the teacup and cut it out. Then I inked up the teacup with VersaMark and pressed the BACK of the teacup piece down onto the stamp. Since the cup part is symmetrical, it was easy to do and I only had to add more VersaMark to the handle before embossing with Clear Embossing Powder. Enjoy!

CAS FRIDAY, Baby Girl Footprints...

It's Friday– and that means it's CAS time! This is a card I made for a friend of Jenni's who recently had a baby girl. I kept it really simple. The flower uses the Faux Suede technique. Looking at the picture, I'm thinking I should have added a leaf. I'm sure I will go back and add it later, knowing me! TECHNIQUE THURSDAY, Emboss Resist High Tea Thanks...

Today I have a monochromatic thank you card I did with Tea Shoppe stamp set from the Occasions Mini Catalog. It is one of my favorite sets from the Mini. I am really hoping that it comes back in the new catty! For this card, I used a simple Emboss Resist technique (tutorial at the end) for the Hello Doily stamp. It is a perfect stamp for this technique. After embossing the doily, I sponged Concord Crush over it, to highlight it. Then I added the tea cup and teabag (the tag punch is awesome for this) and stamped the sentiment. Enjoy!

For those who may be new to stamping and don't know the Emboss Resist Technique, here it is:

EMBOSS RESIST TECHNIQUE:
1. Stamp your image with Versamark or Craft Ink onto card stock. This technique works especially well on Glossy card stock.

2. Emboss using White (with Versamark) or Clear (with Craft Inks) Embossing Powder and your Heat Tool. Allow to cool.

3. Sponge or bray any color(s) classic ink around the embossed image.

4. Buff off any remaining or excess ink from the embossed image with a paper towel or tissue.

TECHNIQUE THURSDAY, Mixed Bunch Butterflies for Mom...

Today is my Technique Thursday class. This week I am featuring the Faux Mother-of-Pearl technique. It is such a simple technique to do, but it really adds a lot to your project. I find it especially fitting for Mother's Day cards.

For the card we are doing, I opted to leave the Top Note piece white Mother of Pearl. However, the butterflies were sponged with colors after using the technique on a square piece of Shimmery White card stock. The "butterflies" were then stamped with one of the flower images from the Mixed Bunch Stamp Set from the Occasions Mini Catalog which ends on April 30. I used the Blossom Punch to punch out the flower and then cut out two petals from the flower to form the butterfly.

In the photo below, you can see a version of the card where the petals cut off were different for each butterfly. The Wisteria Wonder butterfly was formed by cutting out a "top" and a "bottom" petal (cutting each petal into the center of the blossom) leaving two petals on each side of the blossom. The Blushing Bride butterfly was formed by cutting off two "top" petals that are next to each other leaving four petals around the bottom. Ultimately I liked the Blushing Bride version, but I will show both versions and let the class attendees choose which ones they want to use.

And isn't the Pleated Satin Ribbon from the Occasions Mini Catalog fabulous behind a die cut? I love the look of gathered ribbon without all the work! Be sure to check out the FREE tutorial on the Faux Mother of Pearl technique at the end of the post. Enjoy!

FAUX MOTHER-OF-PEARL TECHNIQUE:

Pour a few drops of Frost White Shimmer Paint onto a CD or plastic tray of some sort.
Scrunch up a piece of plastic wrap, wax paper or cellophane and dip it into the Shimmer Paint. Dab off the paint a bit on another part of the plastic tray.
Dab paint coated plastic wrap onto Glossy White or Shimmery White card stock randomly covering the card stock evenly, but not completely—you want white spaces. Allow to dry.
Apply classic ink color of your choice over the entire surface with a Sponge Dauber, Stampin’ Sponge or Brayer.
Tip: Try using multiple colors for a watercolor look. See the butterflies on the Technique card above.

WATERCOLOR WEDNESDAY, Romantic Indigo Blossoms...

Today I have a Watercolor Wednesday card to share with you. It features the Bordering on Romance Stamp Set and the Sweet Shop Specialty Designer Series Paper from the Occasions Mini Catalog which ends on April 30, so don't miss out!

This image really lends itself to watercoloring. You can experiment with so many different techniques. For this one, I mostly used Classic Ink with my Aqua Painter. I added accents with a White Signo Gel Pen, but it was really running dry, so it didn't turn out exactly how I wanted, but it's okay. I was going to pop-out the flowers with another layer as my upline had done, but I decided to keep it a little simpler. Hope you enjoy it!

Today is Watercolor Wednesday! I can't believe I haven't done an Easter card for my blog yet, so I had to do one for you today. The Everybunny Stamp Set in the Idea Book & Catalog is just adorable! I tried to keep it simple to let the watercolor image be the focus, although it was hard not to add embossing or pearls, etc. I'm still struggling with KISS (Keep It Simple Stamper), but I'm trying! I did end up pulling out my Crimper though to give my eyelet border a ruffled appearance.

I used Shimmery White card stock for the watercolored piece - my favorite for watercoloring with Aquapainters and Classic Ink! The Aquapainter just glides across it. I know lots of you got Everyday Enchantment DSP during Sale-A-Bration, so Easter projects are perfect to use it on. Hope you enjoy this one!

STAMPIN' UP! CATALOG CHANGES & RETIRED LIST DATES ANNOUNCED...

Great things are happening at Stampin' Up! Recently it was announced that there will be changes to the way that the catalogs run. These changes are in direct response to consistent requests from demonstrators and customers. We are thrilled about these changes, and are looking forward excitedly to June 1, 2012, when the new annual catalog goes live!

In a nutshell, starting June 1, 2012, Stampin' Up! will release one annual catalog, comparable to (but smaller than) the current Idea Book & Catalog, and two seasonal catalogs, comparable to (but larger than) the current mini catalogs. Pretty simple, right? Here are the details:

Annual Catalog

The annual catalog will run from June 1, 2012 through May 31, 2013.
The annual catalog will be reduced from over 240 pages to 208 pages. Many of the seasonal collections will be moved into the seasonal catalogs to make room, and some products and product lines, including Décor Elements and Simply Adorned will be discontinued.

Seasonal Catalogs

The Occasions, Summer, and Holiday Mini Catalogs will be replaced by two seasonal catalogs called the Holiday Catalog and the Spring Catalog.
- The first Holiday Catalog will run from August 1, 2012 through the beginning of January, 2013
- The first Spring Catalog will run from the beginning of January, 2013 through May 31, 2013.
The seasonal catalogs will be larger in both size (8 1/2" x 11") and page count (about 40 pages) than the current mini catalogs.

Can you believe that the new catalog is only two months away? And with new catalogs always come retiring products! To help you prepare for the upcoming retired lists, here are the release dates:

The Retired Stamp List will be released on April 15, 2012. The retiring stamp sets will be available through May 31, 2012.

The Retired Accessories/Décor Elements Lists will be released on April 25, 2012. Retiring Accessories and Décor Elements will be available WHILE SUPPLIES LAST ONLY, so be sure to place your orders early.
