The Festa della Repubblica is celebrated on the second day of June, and it commemorates the institutional referendum of 1946 when (by universal suffrage) the Italian population was called to decide what form of government (monarchy or republic) to give to the country after the second world war and the fall of Fascism.

After 85 years of monarchy, with 12,717,923 votes for and 10,719,284 votes against, Italy became a Republic, and the monarchs of the House of Savoy were deposed and exiled. This is one of the most important Italian public holidays which, like July 14th in France and July 4th in the USA, celebrates the birth of the nation. A grand military parade is held in central Rome.

Information Session for Slow Food and Italy's University of Gastronomic Sciences

Italy's University of Gastronomic Sciences will hold an information session for prospective students interested in learning more about the school's programs and application procedures. Staff and alumni will be on hand to explain the educational philosophy of the university, present the undergraduate and graduate programs, and answer questions. The University was founded in 2003 by the international nonprofit Slow Food and the Italian regions of Piedmont and Emilia-Romagna.

Rosa from De'Santis Farms in Fresno has offered to give a little presentation (in Italian, of course) of her fruit stand for children in the Italian community. There will be lots of samples of her fruits for the kids.

We will meet at the market Sunday morning, April 6 at 10:15 and wander to her stand together. After we could eat, listen to music together, or whatever seems nice to do. Victoria's Stables with the petting zoo and pony rides will also be there, so that could be a nice option, too.

Mondo Bambini: Italian for Kids is again offering an Italian program for children 2.5 - 5 years old.

MONDO BAMBINI FALL 2008 SCHEDULE AND ENROLLMENT

WHAT: Fall classes for 2.5-5 year olds
WHEN: Friday am 8:45-11:30am
Sept. 12th to Dec. 12th (no class on Nov. 28th)

COST: $525 + $35 materials fee (+ some parental involvement)
LOCATION: Finnish Hall, 1970 Chestnut St., Berkeley

APPLICATION DEADLINE: August 30th 2008

WHAT IS MONDO BAMBINI?
We are the only Italian-immersion programfor young children in the EastBay. Children need not be exposed to Italian before enrolling, but a careful balance is maintained to ensure that Italian is the primary language used by the children. Teachers will only speak Italian to the children. Please let us know if you have any questions.

An Italian-immersion childcare center that provides very young children a nurturing and stimulating environment in which to grow and learn. How
Teachers take a developmentally appropriate play-based approach to early childhood education. The "negotiated curriculum" features projects as its cornerstone, allowing for both autonomy and collaboration as children build self-esteem and respect for one another.
Children at La Piccola Scuola Italiana learn Italian and live Italian culture through every day interactions and play. "We don't just learn Italian, we learn in Italian!"

Who

The families and children at La Piccola Scuola Italiana range from Italian citizens living in San Francisco, to families who simply love Italian language and culture. Children do not need to speak Italian before enrolling at La Piccola Scuola Italiana. All of the teachers are fluent in Italian; the majority are native speakers.

Why

Research shows that early childhood offers a unique opportunity to learn languages, as well as providing a critical basis for all future development and learning. Furthermore, immersion in a second language supports children to excel in linguistic, academic, social and cognitive development. By exposing your child to Italian at an early age, you stimulate brain activity which can open doors of opportunity later in life.

The long-term goal of PARLIAMO ITALIANO! - Scuola Materna (2 - 4 ½ years old) is to bring the children to fluent bilingualism.

Bilingual students have more success in school due to the innate understanding of varied patterns and organization of language which helps them decode the various disciplines they will encounter in school. We work hard to help our children develop a natural transition from one language to the other.

PARLIAMO ITALIANO! - Scuola Materna Grand Opening
on Saturday, March 22nd 2008

WHEN:

Classes are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:15-1:15.
A healthy snack will be provided, but children need to bring their own lunch.
The program will be offered in four trimesters and the Academic year goes from April to April with a graduation party and performance at the end of the year. First day of school will be April 7, 2008
Spring session will go April to June
Summer session will go July to September
Fall session will go October to December
Winter session will go January to March

COST:

$650/a month (3 times a week)
$500/a month (2 times a week)

An annual enrollment fee of $200 (or $50 per trimester)

In 2003, Rosella Pusateri first started an Italian based play-group in Sausalito called, “Bambini let’s play in Italiano.” The goal of the play-group was to provide a safe and loving environment that enriched the lives of the children, with a unique opportunity to learn a second language/culture while celebrating the time-honored traditions of Italy. A strong sense of community among the families and friends of these children was formed and with it a respect and awareness of diversity and multiculturalism.
