Bitten By A Ninja

My first accident of the new year came at the hands of a ninja. That's right, a ninja! I was looking for a banana on the kitchen counter and out of nowhere I felt like I got bit. I jerked my hand back and looked down and my middle finger was bleeding.

I had this puzzled look on my face and Debbie asked what happened. I said, "Something bit me!!". Of course her first reaction was to laugh. We both went to look and after moving the clutter on the kitchen counter from all of the holiday cooking we lifted up the dish towel that was concealing the culprit. There it stood, one of the most dangerous of all kitchen appliances, the blades of a Ninja (you know the blender/food processor). Ouch!!

Meanwhile, after several paper towels and three bandaids later I finally got the bleeding to stop. Lesson learned is don't leave your Ninja naked.

Proud To Be An American

Veteran's Day has been more on my mind this year than any prior year. Perhaps it was the buzz around the recent mid-term elections or President George W. Bush's interview on NBC as he talked about the key decision points he made during his presidency or it was the funeral I attended this past week of very special family member Hubert G. Comer former World War II veteran who passed away. I think it's all of the above.

Each one of these experiences allowed me to reflect just how proud I am to live in America, vote in America, and give thanks to those who have come before us and currently serve in the military that provide us all the blanket of freedom that makes this country great. We should not have to be reminded of this just on Veteran's Day but every day. My hope and prayer each day is for God to watch over those who serve all over the world and protect them and their families.

How 'bout that Cowboy!

It was inevitable that Emmitt Smith #22 running back for the Dallas Cowboys and the NFL's all-time leading rusher would be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. The only uncertainty would be how it would all play out for him during the emotional events this past weekend. As I listened to his acceptance speech and the others before him there were several themes that I found interesting that most of them had in common that I wanted to share.

Most of them professed to be born again Christians with Jesus Christ being the primary leader in their life.
They all were blessed by God with amazing raw talent and through their commitment and dedication became great football players.
They all had signifcant role models in their life that motivated and stretched them to be the best they could be.
In their own way each of them were gracious and humbled by the opportunity to play the sport they love the most at the highest level.
Finally, as a football fan (and a Cowboy fan) I felt honored to have witnessed most of their glory days as players and the joy and excitement they have brought to me through a sport I love with a passion.

These are amazing takeaways. As we all reflect on our own God-given talents and we must recognize we all have the opportunity to experience a hall of fame career in our own little corner of the world. ETALK #2 - Jon Duffy, Founder of Duffy Plan

In episode #2 of our ETALK series I had the pleasure of sitting down with Jon Duffy who recently started his new educational planning business. We talk about how his new startup is going and learn more about how he helps aspiring college students and the need for an educational planner. Here is a little backgrounder on Jon Duffy.

Jon earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from West Virginia University in 1991 and a master’s degree in school counseling from Marshall University Graduate College in 1998. His professional experience includes coordination of a school-to-work program in Kanawha County, nominated as Youth Service Provider of the Year by the Bureau of Employment Programs.

Jon has also coordinated professional health science student rotations in Kanawha County, served as a school counselor and has spent the past seven years serving as an educational consultant to colleges and universities throughout the U.S.

Notably in 2005, Jon co-authored research published in The Journal of the First-Year Experience & Students in Transition—investigating factors contributing to college freshmen achievement. Jon most recently served as co-chairman for the 2008 Higher Education Symposium on Emotional Intelligence at Georgetown University.
