The question I have is should some content be expired?
I raise this question in concern to local police blotters that track arrests and traffic infractions. In most cases these are dropped from public records or can be expunged after a period of time.
Sure, I can go look at microfiche of old newspapers at the library but should this type of content be expired online on purpose after a specific period of time?
I believe we are at a turning point in media as more print publications realize the strength of the distribution network online. As high as the costs may be for the killer servers needed to run the best database of articles the current distribution network has to be even more costly.
Since the media are at this turning point now this is the best time to look at this ethical question, see what the law suggests that can be used as guidelines, and make a decision on how this type of information should be removed when it’s relevance has expired.

David Szetela followed me three times now...

...That's 3 strikes and your BLOCKED!

When I first joined Twitter in the middle of last year I did a few searches to find people to follow. Of course this included some nationally recognized people in online marketing, including David Szetela. While working for Moveo Integrated Branding I was never suprised when people at other agencies wouldn’t follow me back, so I thought nothing of the fact that he never bothered to follow me back.

In one of my “You don’t follow me back and I don’t find you that usefull” purges I unfollowed David, I think it was late December last year. To my surprise I was followed by David within 24 hours! Now, I use the web interface so I flip through my follower pages on a regular basis. When I noticed David had slipped off of page 1 of the most recent followers he suddenly unfollowed me. Since then @Szetela has proven he is all about using cheap tricks and not real conversation to keep his numbers high and his exposure maximized.

His strategy: stay on people’s first page of followers so when others check their followers for people to follow they will find him more often.

His tactics: serial follow/unfollows to keep him on the first page.

His results: as of this post’s publication he has 9,252 followers and is following 10,149.

This sort of tactic is just plain rude!

David Szetela followed me three times now…

…That’s 3 strikes and your BLOCKED!

I love a good linkbait title, don’t you?

But seriously, it’s not about sharing…not entirely.

I had someone Follow me on Twitter today, I followed back and received a DM. These DMs when I just follow people back are annoying at the very least (unless I actually know who you are) and offensive/block-worthy at worst. This one was neither, it was actually intriguing!

There was a mini-link and it said I’m not an autoresponder and I thought, what the hell, right? So I click the link and it’s about how the dude understands Twitter.

Thanks, but I was interviewed by ABC in October because I understand the s**t out of Twitter. So, instead of just unfollowing or deleting, I decide to ask a question. (I know, I’m a glutton for punishment.)

"Why did you share that with me? I don’t understand the intended value."

The response (paraphrased) "We’re supposed to be sharing, at least that’s what I do in social media."

After I was done laughing, I blocked him.

Social Media and Networking are about (seriously, if you never hear anything else I say – listen to this)

Sharing something the recipient WANTS to receive!

Such a subtle difference, but really, it means everything.

Everything.

I mean it’s the basic difference between push and pull marketing, right?

The real rub is that this guy owns a marketing company and doesn’t get it. That’s unforgivable, especially when your tweet and follow up show me you don’t get it but your semi-snotty retort is that you get the sharing what’s my problem?

Seriously. I don’t know you…why would I give a rat’s behind that you think you get Twitter? I mean, where’s the value in that?

Next I’ll have to applaud when I see people on the street slip but not fall on ice. "Good for you for not falling! You’re a rockstar!"
