href="http://www.ypulse.com/">Ypulse listed my SXSW panel (Getting the Kids Behind You) as one of their picks for the conference. So exciting! Vote now, or you may not get to see my lovely face in Austin next year!

In other news, the nonprofit I work for, PETA, will be featured on tomorrow night's episode of Lewis Black's Root of All Evil in a show titled "NRA Vs. PETA". From the looks of the preview, it looks like Mr. Black takes a few jabs at PETA.

Many people ask me whether I think this type of attention is good or bad. I say good, and this is why. Every time PETA is mentioned in the press, our site gets a boost in traffic, which results in our videos getting viewed more, which often results in people wanting to get more involved in helping animals.

Some coming to the site may be looking for something to make fun of, but leave actually learning something about the ways in which animals are treated on factory farms, labs, circuses, etc...

So long story short- you can't please the haters all of the time, but you can teach them something some of the time.

Hey, if Project Runway can have an Olympic themed show, why can't nonprofits get in the game too?

Today, "Songs for Tibet" (a benefit compilation featuring Sting, Moby, Dave Matthews, John Mayer and more) topped iTunes. Put out by nonprofit The Art of Peace Foundation to raise awareness about China's role in Tibet, this campaign had absolutely perfect timing.

PETA just unleashed its very beautiful, very patriotic, and very naked anti-fur PSA starring Olympian Amanda Beard. The controversial PSA has received international attention and a ton of press.

Actress and activist Mia Farrow is Web-casting her own "Darfur Olympics" alternative opening ceremony from a refugee camp on the Sudan border with her nonprofit Dream for Darfur in order to bring attention to the role China plays in Sudan's economics and politics.

Which campaign had the best use of the Olympics to gain the world's attention to their cause? It's been an exhausting couple of weeks, but I missed you, so I'm back. As I said in my last post, I was on Warped Tour with the nonprofit I work for, peta2. I may not have liked the music, and I came back with a bit of a farmer's tan, but I did enjoy all the great feedback and incite I got from it. Here's a lil' breakdown of the three most popular nonprofits (besides peta2) that were/are on this year's Warped Tour:

Truth: Truth was there in all its orange glory. Truth consistently attracted large crowds by playing crazy games and giving away a ton of free tees and booty shorts. I was not really sure how the games exactly drilled into the audience that smoking was bad (Thriller dance off?), but they did do a good job of secretly branding all that partook in the festivities. *Their Warped site is pretty good too.

To Write Love On Her Arms: Their t-shirts were EVERYWHERE. From the people attending to the bands to the catering staff. Everyone was sporting TWLOHA. Their booth was always packed. Unfortunately, their booth offered nothing more than tees for sale, and left me thinking where does all the suicide prevention stuff come into play?

Keep A Breast: Another very popular t-shirt on the tour was Keep A Breast's "I Love Boobies" tee. But unlike, TWLOHA, Keep A Breast had plenty of information available about breast cancer prevention when I visited their booth. Keep an eye on this one...

Don't worry, I've packed some earplugs.

I went on Warped Tour last year, and learned a lot about what young adults think of the nonprofit I work for (peta2). It was an amazing experience with incredible, direct feedback- far surpassing any survey or study that comes past my desk about youth.

Nothing beats talking to your prime demographic in their prime element for 10 hours a day. I admit, it does help that I look a bit younger than I actually am- gotta get this field research will I still can!

The best part of going on the tour is that I get to evaluate first hand how peta2's outreach is doing. I also get to scout out what other nonprofits (and more importantly- other corporations) are doing to get the youth's eyes and ears.

So for the next few days I will be M.I.A. in the blogging world, but will make sure to tell you all the juicy details when I get back.

Widgets are amazing. They drive traffic, raise funds, play videos, provide info, and even feed your cats while you're on vacation (OK- maybe not the last one). The only things I don't like about widgets is that they can be both pricey and complicated to create, which is not good news for nonprofits with a small staff and small budget.

However, there is a widget god. If you are looking to create an easy and effective widget on a shoestring budget (i.e. no budget), look no further than Gydget.

I made the following widget in less than an hour, with little nohow, and it has already had over 100,000 unique views since launching in June.

Gydget is free and easy, which is music to ones ears if they are a non-developer marketer like myself.

P.S. The peta2 Woof widget is ranked 3rd on top grabbed widgets this week right behind Lil Wayne. That being said, Obama's campaign (so far) has been absolutely brilliant. Change We Can Believe In is the perfect slogan. It has the perfect sentiment, and most importantly has perfect timing.

I can't tell you how many times I have stared at his site and watched the "Yes We Can" video in awe. When I look at his campaign, the thoughts that come to mind are: positive, young, optimistic, empowering, and strong.

Nonprofits take heed- this is what the people want. They want to feel like that can make change. They want to feel good about themselves. Slightly disturbing, but gets the point across. Nothing says pay attention to me like a baby in a roasting pan.

This PSA is currently running in Texas, where there have been several recent baby deaths due to parents leaving their children locked in hot cars.

People also do this to dogs. A lot. Which brings up the very important question: who is cuter- buttered baby or Simon Cowell?

Not sure myself.

The shock value and creativity that Truth had in their 2006 ad campaign has been replaced with singing unicorns and dancing leprechauns. I just don’t get it.

Sure is it slightly funny, but the point of the campaign is completely lost. I can’t really even make out what they are singing about. Is tobacco bad or good? Are musicals the new black?

I think they need to go back to the drawing board on this one. The ads they had in 06 were much more relevant- they should continue on that path again. They got the money- make it happen.

The apps range from readable bibles to Starbucks locators, but alas, the closest nonprofit related app I could find was "Survivors 1 and 2"- here is the description for it:

What if the animal’s in Noah’s Art could teach us something about Global Warming and Saving the Planet?

Slim pickings now, but I am looking forward to seeing what nonprofit is the first to break into this realm. I hope it’s mine! I think it would be wise to get in at the start. My dream would be to have an app that could tell you what vegetarian friendly restaurants were near your current location.

P.S. So amazing that when I Googled AMAM several articles about the campaign came up before their own site. Some have said that this campaign crossed the line, but I say there really is no line to cross anymore. If it gets people talking- it gets people talking. Since then, I continue to keep tabs on how the school is doing by checking out their website, which I am happy to report is leagues ahead of what it was during my time there.

I absolutely love the new blog feature of the site (although it’s not updated as frequently as I would like)- I think it's essential for students, parents, teachers, and donors alike to get these sorts of informal updates about what the school is up to. I also enjoyed the fact that they had an online donation page. However, I do think that they should promote this feature on the front page, and not keep it hidden in the back pages.

My favorite part of the site is their news and events updates- simply for that fact that they never fail to make me smile.

My old high school’s site seems so sad in comparison!

P.S. Donate to them if you can. They do amazing work- see the WSJ article here.

The number is now the name of the nonprofit he established to combat the AIDS epidemic in Africa.

During the concert, messages wishing Mandela a Happy Birthday scrolled across the jumbo trons on either side of the stage. Viewers could either text their message, or fill out a form on the site to essentially create the world's largest birthday card. After sending a message, you then could download an exclusive free song from Queen + Paul Rodgers. Clever!

The concert was great. The cause itself is great. But the site for the cause needs a bit of work. The most surprising thing I saw after visiting the 46664 site, was that the 46664 tee that everyone from to Will Smith to Mandela himself was wearing was not more predominately displayed for sale. I am sure everyone and their mum was looking for that tee if they saw the concert. I know I kinda fancied it.

The campaign is so innovative, and so very different than anything I have seen in this area of nonprofits. Instead of invoking pity, it accomplishes their mission statement, "We are people with developmental disabilities, who want nothing more than to control our own destinies and live in our own communities."

Below is the ad featuring my coffee shop's (Fairgrounds) local celebrity Hollywood.

A few weeks ago while I was coming home from work, I saw a bunch of people standing on the side of the road holding up picture frames and waving to passing cars. I quickly recognized that they must be from Hope House, and as I got closer, I saw that I was right. They were out promoting an upcoming arts festival, whose proceeds go to Hope House. It made me so happy. Very positive and clever campaign.

If these games are geared towards young adults, the makers really need to take this into consideration a bit more.

Never underestimate the fun factor. There is only so much "education" that one can take before getting bored and resorting to playing Dance Off! on Viva Pinata.

There’s the American Marketing Association’s Nonprofit Marketing Conference and the Orange Conference, and of course NTEN, which just took place. My question is: is the travel, time off of work, and expense worth it?

I attended NTEN last year, and was slightly disappointed at the amount of usable information I gathered from it. It was nice to network with other nonprofits, but I did not come back fully inspired. On the flip side, I attended SXSW Interactive last March and was completely blown away at all of the nerdy and useful info I was bombarded with as soon as I stepped in the Austin Conference Center.

Are the nonprofit specific conferences simply not worth it? Would I rather get my advice from Google and Facebook then other nonprofits? Sadly, right now the answer is yes.

I find that taking advice from those most successful at reaching the most people (usually of the corporate persuasion) and transitioning it to the nonprofit world is the way to go.

This does not mean you won’t find me at any upcoming nonprof conferences- you just might. However, it does mean that you will definitely find me at SXSW next year…twittering.

This seemingly simple form of marketing can mean big bucks and a ton of exposure for the nonprof if the “look” catches on.

Here are my top 5 best nonprofit tees at the moment:

1. A lil’ old, yes, and somewhat of a questionable success, Gap’s (Product) RED tee is still one of my faves. I like the look, and dig the cause.

2. This vintage style WWF tee has two things going for it: It features its incredibly cute and recognizable panda logo and is being sold at trendy stores such as Urban Outfitters and Delias.

3. I see this To Write Love on Her Arms tee everywhere. I didn’t even know it was associated with a nonprofit until I looked it up (not sure what that says about the tee). Regardless, I still like the look.

4. An oldie but goody- this Rock the Vote tee makes me reminiscent to the time when I trusted politicians.

5. I just had to throw in a tee from PETA- this one has been spotted on everyone from Paul McCartney to me. Simple, cute, and not aggressive.

Answer: Get yourself on a hit reality TV show.

Granted, if you are not the sort of nonprofit that might bring some drama into the mix, then reality shows might not be banging down your door to get you on their show. But if you are say PETA, that’s another story…

Tonight on Morgan Spurlock’s award winning show 30 Days, a hunter named George spends a month living with a co-worker of mine named Melissa and her all vegan family. In my very biased opinion, it was amazing. Don’t believe me? Mr. Spurlock himself said that this was one of the most compelling hours of television he has ever watched.

So check it out! It airs tonight on FX at 10:00 PM EST. And if you are a nonprofit- start bringing the drama!

P.S.
