How to Make Your WordPress Site a Static Site with a Blog

1. Login to your WordPress dashboard. At the lefthand side of your screen click Page, then Add New. Name your new page Blog.

2. Go to Settings. Select Reading.

3.  See below. For Front page displays, select A static page. For Posts Page, select Blog. You may have options in the dropdown list under Front Page. Select whatever is appropriate.

4. Remember to hit Save changes!

You’re done.

Now you should have a static page for your Home Page with a blog attached (a link to the blog should appear at the top of your site).

Optimizing blog posts with well chosen keywords, links, graphics, audio and video will help to attract visitors to your site via the search engines, etc. If you’re new to internet marketing, you’ll see this for yourself over time. This will be a cool thing. You’ll start to see why something worked well compared to something else that you did.

Add decent content/copy and promote the kinds of products that people are looking for, and you’ll up the odds that you’ll make some money. How much money will depend on many things. You just need to have the bare basics in place to have a reasonable shot.

It’s all about upping the odds. But that’s the practical, see-able, down to earth conclusion of course.

If there is a hidden element (for example, “fate” as the ancients were more likely to say), we can’t know for absolute sure. Anyone who claims they know for absolute sure is probably … selling something.

Back to the reality that plays out concretely: if you DON’T do some of the key things that are needed to attract visitors to your site, odds are good that you won’t get the visitors and sales that you want. UNLESS by accident you hit on keyword phrases, etc. that people are searching for, of course. Or maybe you’re so famous that anything you say is of interest to people. If that’s the case, then you can be mundane or totally insane – things you might be ignored or hated for if you weren’t famous. Even then, people got to your site because you were findable online. That is where keywords come into play once again. Always the keywords. Your name simply becomes a keyword to search for.

Sometimes it’s tiring to be so ‘good’ about optimizing. The research and care it takes to put in the right elements aren’t done in seconds. They can also curb the flow of creativity.

Naturally you don’t want to break the rules to the extent that you’ll likely have few or no results that benefit you. But sometimes it’s nice to let loose and just throw something out there with very little planning. Maybe you’re going crazy from the contraint of being so ‘good’ all of the time.

I’m feeling tired today. Maybe you can relate if you’re an online business person doing what you can to succeed. There is a LOT of stuff that needs to be covered.

I’m not a millionaire yet, but I know that some of the things that I’ve done have worked which is why I made money.  It hasn’t been a total mystery. But I couldn’t predict it to the dollar. And I only tell people about products that I personally use and feel good promoting and/or that others I trust like too. I just hope that my sincerity comes across. I am a careful shopper. I’m happy to help readers who are decent people. I can’t see you and know for sure, I just hope that most of the people who want to read my site are that way.

As you may have guessed, this post isn’t optimized. Unless by accident I’ve hit on something that people are ravenously searching for, and that leads them to find other things here that they want to buy and I make millions overnight – lol. But of course this blog has stuff on it that IS optimized, so if people find this and it ranks, it isn’t based on the post alone, most likely.

No Keyword Research, No Links, No Products, No Graphics, No Audio, No Video?

It’s easy to find complaints about online marketing scams, tips on how to avoid being duped, and lots of talk about being ethical and the value of “transparency”.

What about internet marketing that doesn’t hit the criminal level of an out-and-out scam?

What about the common practice of using pen names? Is it an acceptable business practice or more misleading marketing?

The use of a pen name, also known as nom de plume, by professional writers is common and, in general, accepted. As you probably know, one of the most famous examples is American author and humorist Samuel Clemens who used the pen name Mark Twain.

Let’s look at some of the common reasons why authors use pen names and then explore how they apply to online marketers.

• privacy and/or protection – the latter may be important if the content of the work is controversial or an exposé
• catchier/more evocative name for a particular genre
• disguise gender or race or anything that might limit acceptance by publishers and the public - as you may know, it was more common in the past for female authors to assume male names to ensure that their work was accepted by publishers and readers. Today female writers may adopt a male name and male writer may adopt female names to suit whatever genre they are contributing to. Or they may take a gender neutral approach by using initials such as The Outsiders author S.E. Hinton (Susan Eloise Hinton)
• credibility - this one is ironic, but it’s a feature of human psychology (unfortunately in my view): by using different pen names authors can publish works in different genres or multiple works in the same genre and readers will find this to be more believable than if they used the same name. Yes, this is where seeming like a one trick pony can be advantageous.
• branding to allow flexibility if for any reason a writer does not continue to write a series, column, etc. A notable example is the famous advice column Ask Ann Landers. Ann Landers is a pen name that was created by Ruth Crowley, the first of many writers to assume the role.
• collective names - similar to the above, some series fiction is published under one name even though two or more authors write the series. The first book in the series might by written by one author, subsequent books by ghost writers. This allows a series to continue if the first book is popular but the author cannot write more books for any reason.
• creative expression or whim -  Edward Gorey’s use of multiple pen names apparently were for his own amusement and were simply anagrams of his real name

Pen Names in Online Marketing:

What is Acceptable and What Crosses the Line?

The reasons above, and more, apply to online marketers who use pen names. Replace ‘author’ with marketer, ‘genre’ with niche and ‘works’ or ‘books’ can be product or service. In reference to branding, marketers will either have a pen name or business name so it’s possible to sell their business without selling the rights to their real name with it.

Top marketers might use their real name in certain niches (the make money online/internet marketing niche for example) and pen names in the rest. When you learn about internet marketing, you will probably be advised to do the same thing, and to be secretive about the names you use of course.

But where do YOU draw the line?

In online business, marketers can be their own publishers and editors. This may eliminate certain obstacles, but they still have to appeal to their readers and customers. Some of the reasons authors use pen names might not, on the surface, seem unethical in internet marketing. It depends on how far things go.

Here are a few specific ways that top reputable marketers use pen names that may or may not strike you as unethical:

• hire ghost writers to write their blog content, copy, etc.
• use multiple fake identities online to author content for their sites, products, article marketing, social media accounts, blog and forum posts, etc. (the names might just be catchy user names, not human names, but often they are human names for greater credibility)
• create characters with backgrounds, personality differences, age and gender differences, etc. if it suits the niche they are in. They sometimes use fake photos to represent these characters.
• hire people to promote their business with an assumed name or even their real name
• create “competitors” to banter back and forth with them on their blogs, etc. – they might do this themselves or hire someone to do it
• start online forums and invent characters who post a few times so new, real members will be encouraged to participate in the forum

This is only a smattering of what marketers might do with pen names, of course. They might not do this in all of the niches and sites they own, but more than you might think. Again, I am not talking about the fly by nights that all of us should avoid. I’m talking about some of the marketers who want to provide value to customers.

Profit is a motivating factor, but marketers may also justify the more blatent use of pen names (when they create a persona perhaps complete with a picture) by saying that they are doing more “good” this way – the persona appeals to the target market so potential customers will feel more trust and buy the great products(s) and benefit from them. So, it’s for the greater good, they say.

My ideal is more transparency than is the norm

I don’t have an issue with using a pen name for privacy. I also realise that some marketers have a public persona that customers enjoy. Marketing can be show business. However, I want them to be honest about who they really are and, if they invent characters, to be clear about that.

The dilemna is that people respond well to this kind of deception. If it goes too far, no, but usually they never find out and never question it. I don’t want to participate in this – Lillea is my REAL name. I use it in other niches. Woodlyns is my pen surname (I just happen to like it!) – but I know that the use of pen names in a myriad of ways helps many online marketers succeed.

I like Twitter because it’s easy to use and it helps me with my online business in several ways, which I share in this post.

There are hundreds of sites and programs that tell you how to make money with Twitter, but I believe in being genuine and posting and replying to Tweets in real time, so anything that promises to automate that process, bring in an insane number of followers (I believe in quality, not quantity!) or pulls what I consider to be a sneaky trick is not for me and won’t be discussed here.

It’s interesting to look back at the time when I was just getting into online business and dreading social media. I knew that I was ‘supposed to’ participate in popular social media sites, like Twitter, but it seemed shallow to me.  I rolled my eyes, and sometimes still roll my eyes, at what I call ‘tuna fish sandwich tweets’. I’m referring to the messages that many Twitter users post about mundane things like what they had for lunch. Comedians love to poke fun at this for good reason. I imagine that I’ve ‘tuna fish sandwiched’ a few times on Twitter, but I do my best to avoid it.

What I’ve found, as I’ve become more active on Twitter, is that it isn’t simply a shallow and tuna fish sandwich-y place, if you know how to use it properly. Instead, you can find valuable information and meet like-minded people who can help you to improve your business whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned marketer.

3 Natural Ways to Use Twitter to Make Money with WordPress Blogs

1. Research Your Blog’s Niche

By entering what you want to research in the Search feature in Twitter you can see what people are talking about in the niche you’re targetting. This can help you gather ideas for blog posts, articles and products and/or you can deliver interesting content to your Twitter followers by simply retweeting the tweets that are appropriate.

If you want to conduct searches that are more comprehensive and automated than what Twitter offers out-of-the-box, you can use a service like Tweet Scan. Tweet Scan analyzes information on Twitter and several other sites such as identi.ca, bleeper.de and MicroCiaran with the keywords you specify, then e-mails you the results daily or weekly. Tweet Scan has a free 14-day trial. If you upgrade to the paid service it’s only $20/year and will scan information as far back as 2007.  It also has an option to backup your Twitter account for safekeeping. I’m quite new to Tweet Scan but like it so far.

2. Network

Twitter allows you to network with people in your niche(s) from around the world easily and quickly in real time.

To find people to follow in your niche you can use the free program Twellow. Select up to 10 categories and Twellow will tell you is in that particular niche.

It’s great to be friendly and chatty with fellow Tweeters, trade tips and techniques and use Twitter for entertainment, but if you’re serious about making money with your WordPress blog and growing your business, it’s wise to use Twitter to find the best people who can help you with that.

To learn more about anyone you meet on Twitter be sure to:

• read a few pages worth of their tweets
• read a good number of their retweets
• see how they interact with other Twitter users when they reply to them. Do they reply at all, or often, or do they simply churn out pitches/tweet their own horn for the most part? Are they a real person tweeting in real time, or possibly a bot or perhaps someone a marketer has hired to tweet on their behalf who doesn’t fully understand the business they are representing.
• visit the website they list in their profile and find out more about them in the About section, or similar, of their website .
• look at who they follow. Do they seem to be doing reciprocal follows (the number of followers they have is close to the number of people they follow) or are they more selective about who they follow? (much smaller number of followings than followers). If it’s the latter, you can get a sense of what and who they value by visiting the pages of the people they follow.

Tip: Send out personal, relevant replies to other people’s Tweets, not spammy Direct Messages, to introduce yourself. It’s also good to occasionally retweet other people’s tweets if the information is suitable for your followers. Retweeting is an easy, fast, non-invasive way to show interest in, and respect for, what they are doing.

Note: Visit me on Twitter and check out some of the people that I am following if you’re interested in WordPress and meeting online business people who are successful and helpful. Some of the people in my following list are from the old days when I thought I had to reciprocal follow so they may not have much weight for me. I don’t reciprocal follow any more; I only follow people who I truly want to follow, including several members of the private internet marketing coaching forum where I got most of my training.

The more experience you have with the quick Twitter way of communicating, the more you’ll see that you can meet like-minded people who are happy to share information that can help you promote your WordPress blog. You may find yourself engaged in some pleasant back and forths, and eventually some of those interactions can lead to very lucrative business partnerships, or at least free promotion of your blog.

3. Promote your blog and products

I save this for last because you should do it, absolutely, but it’s one of the most misused and abused things on Twitter. If you’re in online marketing, and even if you aren’t, at some point you will get a spammy follower who direct messages (DMs) you with an offer that is neither personal nor useful and just wastes your time. Some marketers tweet offer after offer, often nothing more than an affiliate link, to try to sucker people into buying yet another get rich quick system, etc. Ideally you should promote your blog in a variety of ways on Twitter, not only by posting links to products for sale. Provide value and interesting content, not just offers. Post links to articles on your blog that also promote your products and services, or your views, etc. I can’t stand it when a marketer doesn’t seem to care that their customers are people, not just PayPal and credit cards. I hope that you can relate.

Yes, there are many sites and articles that are devoted to how to use Twitter to make money, but if you care about delivering value to your customers and potential customers, and you want to form solid business relationships, then using Twitter in a more natural way, in my view, is the better way to go. If you don’t believe me, follow one of my favorite internet marketers, (he’s a big WordPress user too!) on Twitter and see genuineness in profitable action.

3 Natural Ways to Use Twitter to Make Money with WordPress Blogs

When I log into my WordPress blogs and see a notice at the top of the screen that there is a new version of WordPress, I feel excited and nervous at the same time.

WordPress is ever-improving. With each upgrade I happily anticipate the new features and fixes. At the same time, I feel anxious because sometimes the upgrade process causes problems.

Fortunately there are steps that you can take to up the odds that your upgrade will be successful.

How to Upgrade WordPress

Note: If you want to be extra careful, follow the advice of WordPress expert Leanne King: install the new version of WordPress on a test site before you install it on your real site. Upload the plugins and theme that you’re using on your ‘real’ blog to the test site and activate them. If everything goes well on the test site, all should go well with your upgrade.

If you have a recent version of WordPress you’ll be able to do an Automatic Upgrade to the latest version. You’ll see the alert at the top of your screen when you log into your WordPress blog. You can also go to the Tools -> Upgrade menu.

If an automatic upgrade isn’t possible for any reason, or you run into problems, you can try the Three Step Manual Upgrade on the WordPress Codex.

STEP 1: Backup your WordPress blog’s database AND the rest of your WordPress files

Why? Sometimes something goes wonky during an upgrade, ruining part or all of your blog. Having backup copies of your blog files will be essential if you need to restore something that is damaged or deleted. Don’t count on your web host for a full backup. Have your own on hand!

STEP 2: Deactive ALL of your plugins

Why? Plugins can cause conflict with the upgrade process.

STEP 3: Upgrade WordPress using the Automatic Upgrade option or Three Step Manual Upgrade

STEP 4: Reactivate your plugins one by one, checking to see if everything is fine after each activation

If you notice any problems, deactivate the plugin that seemed to cause the problem. If the problem resolves, it’s the plugin. Continue to activate ALL of your plugins one by one to see if more problems occur. If any plugins seem to be causing issues, keep them deactivated and visit the plugin developer’s site(s) to see if they will give you a fix.

STEP 5: If the problem isn’t resolved by deactivating or updating plugins:

• it may be a problem with the WordPress theme that you’re using. Visit the theme developer’s site to see if they have a fix
• it may be one of the common problems that can occur with WordPress upgrades. See the link below to the WordPress Codex for more information. The descriptions on the Codex can be very technical, but there are often helpful links to sites that offer clear directions: WordPress Common Installation Problems

In general, you’re less likely to have problems if you’re using WordPress plugins and themes that are made by reliable developers.

For example, one of my favorite developers, Eric Hamm of frugal Theme, offers regular updates of his theme to address possible problems. Proactive developers like Eric often test the beta version of each WordPress update so they can adjust their product when the new version is available to the rest of us.

FAQs

Is upgrading WordPress free? Yes, and upgrading your theme and plugins is usually free too, but sometimes there is a fee if you’re using premium themes and plugins.

Do I have to upgrade WordPress? It’s best that you do. Each upgrade offers important improvements and fixes. Often there are security fixes, so if you don’t apply them your blog will be vulnerable to hackers.

Do I need to upgrade WordPress right away when I see the notice that there is an upgrade available? The sooner the better, yes. If you must delay for any reason, don’t wait longer than a month.

Can I go back to older versions of WordPress after the upgrade? Yes, but it’s usually not recommended to rollback (revert) to older versions. The fixes and changes in structure in each upgrade will make it more likely that you’ll have problems when reverting.  Also, if you don’t have a backup of your WordPress database and files prior to your upgrade, a successsful rollback is almost impossible.

My blog is a mess after the upgrade. How do I restore it? You may have to delete everything, do a manual install of WordPress (see: Upgrading WordPress), reinstall your plugins and theme and restore your database.

How to Upgrade WordPress: Steps and FAQs

I’ve been searching for a simple, affordable web analytics service so I can monitor my sites easily.

I use Google Analytics, and often check the stats that my Hostgator account provides, but I’m never satisfied with the way that the data displays or the limitations for what those services scan.

Recently he developed a  free WordPress plugin that promises to offer more options than Google Analytics, and many unique, advanced tracking features when you upgrade to the paid version of the analytics service that it’s affiliated with.  The service is called Clicky.

You can use the free version of Clicky on 1 website with somewhat limited, but adequate, features.

To get ALL of the features that Clicky offers for about $59 a year an upgrade to Pro will allow you to put Clicky on 10 sites, and add many advanced features such as:

- Twitter analytics

- web analytics for iPhone and other mobile devices

- secure (https) tracking support

- advanced visitor segmentation and analysis

-  spy (see every action by every visitor!)

- goal tracking

- alerts via e-mail and Twitter

EVERYONE who signs up for Clicky gets a 21-day trial of the Pro version with no obligation to buy.

After registering for free, you download the Clicky WordPress plugin from the site, upload it to your plugins folder,  install, activate, then enter the tracking codes from your Clicky account into the the Clicky plugin interface.

The yearly fee is quite reasonable compared to other analytics services.  I like Clicky’s simple, option-rich interface.  I also like the plugin’s  interface (no wonder Joost de Valk is one of the best WordPress plugin developers!). I chose to receive a full report daily about my site via e-mail.
