But we've had a few crisp, sunny days. Yesterday I headed out into the Surrey Hills for a short walk before getting to the boozer at lunchtime for an afternoon of sport: the Man Utd-Liverpool game, and England-Italy in the Six Nations.

Finally I catch up on my last year's diaries just in time for my next expedition. This is the story of my second (rather more successful) attempt on Aconcagua by the False Polish Glacier Route, or as it should more properly be called, the True Peruvian Route. Thanks, Augusto!

I'd just come off a big group expedition on Cho Oyu with Jagged Globe. By contrast this was a less formal affair: just the two of us accompanied by a great team of Nepali staff and an ever-shrinking army of porters.

Cut apart by a series of picturesque reservoirs in the Elan Valley, sweeping grasslands stretch for miles, and their remoteness make them a great area for backpacking and wild camping.

Read how events unfolded in one of the least successful climbing seasons the world's 6th highest mountain has ever seen, as blizzards battered the mountain and many climbers were caught in avalanches. In 1879 the Victorian explorer Edward Whymper set sail across the Atlantic bound for the high Andes of Ecuador, where he ended up making first ascents of nearly all of the country's highest mountains. He described the peaks he climbed as hilly rather than mountainous, citing the fact that it's possible to get a donkey up one or two of them as evidence of their inferiority over the mountains of the Alps. But this doesn't bother me. Whether heaving yourself up with an ice axe or straddling a donkey, the views are just as good, and I resolved to follow him and have a go at a few of them myself.
