On September 17, 2009 (New York, NY) – macbar, a new restaurant fully dedicated to gourmet macaroni and cheese, opens in the bustling shopping district of SoHo. Tucked within a macaroni shaped nook on Prince Street, macbar adds high style to comfort food. The visual impact of macbar is as bold as the idea itself. With a staff outfitted in custom Vans sneakers, bright yellows and dark browns set the scene for 12 gourmet flavors served in custom created, macaroni shaped packaging including custom designed interlinked forks and knives. Marque have created all branding, graphics, illustrations, animations, interactive menus, website, uniforms, signage and merchandise for Macbar.

Oliver Spencer's new website, art directed and designed by Marque is now online. Oli founded the label in 2002. He wanted a collection that mirrored his own wardrobe: a bridge between popular streetwear and traditional tailoring. Quality fabrics. Modern fits. Old-school construction. Characteristic details. Exquisite craftsmanship. The recipe abides.

There is no escaping the fact that Oliver Spencer is a modern British brand. More than half the line is made in the UK. Oliver Spencer clothes are worn by music icons, from The Rolling Stones to Paul Weller and The Doves, and by movie stars from Orlando Bloom to Benicio Del Toro.

Seamus McGarvey is an award winning Director of Photography. His list of credits include 'Enigma', 'The Hours', 'Along Came Polly', 'Sahara' and 'World Trade Center'. Solution:

Marque created a new website for Seamus using the popular blogging platform Wordpress and an entirely custom theme. It is common place today for DVD releases to feature director commentary as an added extra. Seamus can record an audio commentary to accompany each video featured on his web site. Given the amount of media content on the website Amazon's S3 web storage service provides fast loading multimedia files, scalability and reliability.

Marque recently created a complete signage and way finding solution for RMJM’s 2009 RIBA Award Winning Building, North Glasgow College.

The scheme consisted of 61 individual painted wall signs, a 1.5 metre tall galvanised steel directional monolith, an 8 metre LED internal information display, an 11.5 metre wide suspended front entrance lettering and 447 individual door signs of various designs. The doors have a changeable information system to allow the college to change classroom information.

Working with the architects ensured sympathy towards the overall vision. In turn the solution embraced a minimal colour palette that complements the building’s architectural features. The applications became very much part of the fabric of the building, presented onto various substrates including plasterboard, concrete slab and concrete blocks.

Marque have developed an Institutional Style Manual and Guidelines for Edinburgh, London and New York fund managers, Baillie Gifford. Baillie Gifford is one of the UK's leading independently owned investment management firms with assets under management exceeding £40 billion. The document was created to help build a coherent look and feel for the organization and develop a new communications strategy and visual identity system for Baillie Gifford.

Ultimately it has resulted in a wider set of design and brand choices for Baillie Gifford when producing new communications for their clients and the public – and ultimately result in maintaining a clear, unified and consistent voice.

Marque's digital team also played an integral consultancy role on the systems development for the automation of reports and data visualization and also developed the online blog for the firm.

A Little Piece of Mind

For a few years now, we have been obsessively tracking the infiltration –often very positive – of modern techniques into craft forms. Quiltmaking is one area that has been at the forefront of this with young designers such as Julie Floersch exploring, pushing and redefining the language of the medium. While these designers are forward thinking, a traditional and historic aspect still remains through the use of natural materials and an insistence on age-old hand craft.

Although this exciting tendency is widely acknowledged, no one it seems has been prepared to champion this within the creative industries or on a worldwide, collaborative level. Important to us, was the challenge of an idea to take, and then piece together, seemingly disparate influences and inputs to make a coherent, influential output. As an aesthetic philosophy, this has engaged both us and our creative collaborators.

The premise was simple. Leading creatives were asked to supply ‘a little piece of mind’ in the form of a 6 inch square of fabric. From a diverse array of such contributions by iconoclasts and innovators, Floersch has composed a Quilt that reinforces the fact that all it takes to make a big difference is a little personal time

On 7 April, the Quilt created through our 'A Little Piece of Mind' project was auctioned to benefit two homeless charities Shelter and The Bowery Mission. The Quilt had been intricately and quite beautifully put together by NY Artist Julie Floersch, using swatches sent in from around the world by leading creatives in Fashion, Design,Music and the Arts. Held at the Londonewcastle Project Space in Shoreditch, London and attended by many of the contributors, the lively and competitive Auction, raised a total £9,800.

The winning bidder, a recognised Contemporary Art Buyer, speaking on the condition of anonymity said '' I was very moved by the nature and craft of Floersch's piece but not in a sentimental way. I bought this because it is a fantastically powerful statement not only from an Artist who is on her way to establishing an international reputation and but also one in collaboration with some of the best creative talent in the world.''

Alta Pampa creates home accessories for contemporary living. They are driven by three essential values in their work: Quality, beautiful practicality and enduring design. They are passionate about well-made objects that are built to last. Marque have worked with Alta Pampa to create a similarly beautiful, practical and enduring visual direction that reflect these values.

Inspired by the traditions of making of their country, London-based Argentine designers Eduardo Ardiles and Diego Scaro embrace local craftsmanship and style from Argentina – echoing the diverse culture of its people and the wealth of the land. Produced in the company’s own workshop in northwest Argentina, and by artisans across the region, the Alta Pampa collections are authentic descendants of this centuries-old heritage.

Marque has designed the brand identity and packaging for Víctor by Víctor Alfaro women’s collection. The collection was designed exclusively for Bon-Ton Stores operating 269 department stores in 23 states throughout the northern United States. The collection includes luxury clothing in Italian merino wool, silk, leather and cashmere, plus a range of accessories including shoes, bags and jewellery.

The custom logotype was created to feel contemporary yet have a slightly retro feel to it. The abbreviated VA logomark was defined, and from this a pattern was created. This VA repeat pattern adds a textural quality, whether through debossing, spot varnishes or as full color with a matt bronze streak through it on the packaging. Rich earthy colorways: brown self-colored
stocks and bronze foil detailing to work with the sumptuousness of the materials being used in his collections.

Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) are responsible for the protection and promotion of Scotland’s nature — from inner city green space to the lochs, hills, glens and abundant wildlife that are famously associated with Scotland. SNH approached Marque to consult on a major visual realignment of the organisation, this involved auditing and examining all of their current
communications, the creation of a refined brand marque, new brand assets and a comprehensive guideline document.

Working closely with the communications and publishing team, Marque looked at every aspect of SNH’s visual output — from information leaflets and reports to publications, books, vehicle livery, stationery and internal communications. In conjunction with a fresh approach to the organisations values we provided guidance and implemented design rules that would drive consistency and achieve a high level of effective brand communication.

We are also delighted that, following the success of their design for the celebrated Hotel on Rivington, renowned Architects Grzywinski and Pons have also been retained on the projects. Both briefs to Marque cover all brand communications, including name concepts for the properties.

The Hotels, which are being developed in Soho and Nolita, will open late 2009 with the brand launch and marketing activity beginning early next year.

The result is a content laden 64 page assessment of the institution's activities spanning the last year. The piece has been digitally printed with French-folded pages and Japanese stab-bound. A triangular device was employed in the top right and left corners of the pages to signify where a new section starts. This was echoed on the candy pink dust-jacket where the corners have been cut off to reveal the Magenta end-papers.

Marque have created the branding for rare, limited edition or hard-to-find denim, vinyl, trainers and sunglasses for asos.com’s ‘Untitled’ initiative.

The brand needed to convey the limited edition aspect of the items, and be flexible enough to withstand the development and growth of the range. The logo is based on a customized hash symbol which is the prefix to an edition number for each of the brands being sold. The concept was developed after researching the way art editions are catalogued, adding value to the products and creating demand. In addition we art directed the product shoot and designed a full range of print including a press book, customer booklets, packaging solutions, website and press gifts.

Marque produced the identity and marketing materials for the gallery's inaugural show, Abstract Expressionism, A World Elsewhere curated by UK art historian David Anfam.

Our work includes a catalogue, private view invitations, title graphics and advertising for the show. By looking back to typography of the time, as well as by using photography that had previously been unpublished, we set out to capture the provenance of the Abstract Expressionist period. The photography was largely that of the late Fred McDarrah and was very kindly supplied by his wife Gloria.

Abstract Expressionism - A World Elsewhere, runs until 12 November and features key pieces by Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, among others, on loan from private collections, as well as from Tate and New York's Museum of Modern Art.

Where We Are

Where We Are is a celebration of the people and places that are creating Scotland’s new design landscape and includes introductions to some of the country’s best designers accompanied by contributions from the design–conscious locals to each city. Not intended to be a regular travel guidebook, Where We Are is a traveller's companion, a local who knows their city inside out, telling you the unique places to visit, sleep, eat and shop in each of these Scottish cities.

The concept and development of the book was a very collaborative process between Marque and editors Emma Halliday and Stacey Hunter of The Lighthouse.

As an introduction to the cities, six commentaries have been included, which discuss current design topics. In the spirit of the Internet and the desire to be inclusive and democratic, the city listings rely on contributions from design–aware locals who created the listings, with all photos from flickr. Their comments are printed exactly as we received them.

The publication was launched in September at the la Biennale di Venezia.

London based photographer Lee Mawdsley needed a new website to showcase his bold portfolio of work at as large a scale as possible.

Solution:
Marque utilised Daniel Eatock and Jeffery Vaska's Indexhibit content management system to create an easily updated site. The Long Tail took form over nearly two years as an "open-source research project" on Wired editor, Chris Anderson's blog at www.longtail.com. This experiment in book development, where Anderson shared data and ideas in progress and his readers helped improve them, fleshed out the theory and stress-tested the analysis. Working with Apt Studio for the book's UK publisher, Random House, the brief was to create a an online experience to raise awareness of the book and drive visitors to the website at longtailbook.co.uk.

Solution:
We created an abstract animation that demonstrates the basic principle of The Long Tail which was posted on You Tube, Google Video and the main site at longtailbook.co.uk.

Results:
The You Tube video has been viewed more than 18 thousand times and has a score of 4.5 stars and the version posted on Google Video has a 5 star rating.

The website needed to be fun and beautiful while communicating the Delicatessen brand, and have room for expansion.

Solution:
Playing off the butcher paper theme created for much of the Delicatessen branding, Marque built a website playful in its movement but clear in its style and branding. The layout was designed to allow for significant growth as the site matures.

The Marque studios in London, New York and Glasgow have identified, commissioned and briefed several of the leading local exponents of quilting to create a series of contemporary quilts. We are then asking internationally recognised leaders in the creative arts from the fields of design, fashion, art and culture to collaborate; to provide a little piece of their mind, by submitting the fabric swatches for the quilts.

After this process, in the winter, the quilts will be exhibited, firstly in London, then in New York and Glasgow.

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is more than just the world’s largest arts festival. Its an annual celebration of global culture, an iconic institution which has been running for over sixty years. The Festival Fringe Society required a means of publicising the availability of pre-order copies of the official Fringe Programme in a way that matched the quirky personality of the festival itself.

Solution:
Embracing the playful visual identity Marque and Chrissie Macdonald created for the media campaign, the result was an interactive viral game where users create and exchange messages by arranging a random selection of letters. Implemented in Flash and using the open-source Box2D physics engine to simulate a realistic dragging effect, we encourage repeated plays by awarding special bonus shapes as well as additional letters depending on how many replies a user has sent.

Results:

For One More Day, The New York Times No. 1 Bestseller from Mitch Albom, explores the themes of family, regret and the wish that we could have just one more day with a lost loved one. Publisher Little, Brown needed a website to support and broaden awareness for the book.

Solution:
Devised in collaboration with Apt Studio, the web concept is an honest and beautiful interpretation of the book which allows viewers to engage with the book and other readers by creating a star to dedicate to a loved one.

The site’s back end is based on an open-source forum software, for which we wrote a custom API, then interpreted in three-dimensional space using the Papervision 3D engine for Flash.

Results:
Over 500 stars have been created since For One More Day launched in November 2007. The book has sold over 125,000 copies, reached #29 in the TCM PB charts, and reached #4 in the Republic of Ireland PB Fiction chart and remained in the Top 20 for 4 months.

The Chicago Spire Website

Brief:
The Chicago Spire is the most significant residential development in the world, with over 1200 unique apartments towering at over 600m, the building’s scale is a challenge in itself. The website needed to communicate Calatrava’s passion and immerse the user in the natural world that inspired the building, at the same time functioning as an inlet for potential buyers.

Solution:
The Flash-based site Marque has produced effectively communicates the building’s scope while doing justice to its beauty and depth. The information gathering via the website is closely tied to a back-end Microsoft CRM system that is also used in Podium. A page-by-page HTML fallback site has ensured a high search engine performance.

Results:
The website has had 315,000 unique visitors and over 1,600,000 page views in 2008, with 1,800 visitors registering for The Chicago Spire mailing list.

Podium for The Chicago Spire

Brief:
Marque was asked to develop a creative solution to aid sales agents working across the world that would allow simple management of the 1200 individually unique apartments in the world's tallest residential building, including plans, availability, views and pricing. The challenge was to create a system that was simple enough for non-technical users, delivered seamless rich user experiences including high definition video, and flexible enough to receive live data as well as continual content changes.

Solution:
Marque created and licensed to The Chicago Spire, Podium, a fully-fledged desktop application that now serves as the main presentation and apartment-finding tool in hundreds of installations worldwide.

Using a combination of traditional multimedia, live apartment data backed by a Microsoft CRM system, and an intelligent global updating system Podium, has become an invaluable sales tool for the Spire agents.

Results:
As of June 2008, over 30% of apartments (352 units) had been sold, with completion not due until 2012.

A spin on traditional comfort food from around the world was the inspiration behind Marque’s branding for Delicatessen at the crossroads of SoHo and Nolita – taking a contemporary position on the traditional delicatessen’s of New York. The typeface, a modern interpretation of the neon signage that is a prevalent feature on most of the city's deli facades, was created specifically by German typographer Hubert Jocham and developed into a full character set for use across all materials. Materials and specifications were also chosen that had the inherent crafted qualities and detailing of traditional delicatessens, yet set in a contemporary world.

Other collaborators included: ANYK Architects; Charlotte Ronson for uniforms; Photographer Terry Richardson; and local artist, Juan José Heredia.

The new menu designs include portraiture of clientele photographed by Terry Richardson. The restaurant in fashionable Nolita, which focuses on international comfort food, opened with a party for 800 and was sponsored by Interview Magazine, Belvedere Vodka and Carrera Sunglasses.

Marque’s long-term relationship (since 2004) with iconic outerwear manufacturer Mackintosh has included the development of their graphic identity, packaging, brand iconography and notably key textile patterns. In 2007 this led to the launch of the first ever Mackintosh online experience and store, which demanded a refined yet contemporary interpretation of the brand while delivering a reliable and secure shopping environment.

Solution:
Marque created an online store where users can create bespoke jackets, tailoring everything from size and colour to the lining and collar, all the time being presented with a preview of their customised Mackintosh. Flash is used to deliver an engaging experience with fast load times and instant feedback on jacket options, integrated with WorldPay as the payment gateway.

Elsewhere on the site seasonal collections are showcased in an interactive look-book that allows visitors to request further information on individual items featured in each photograph.

Oliver Spencer makes clothes to a template. A template of traditional values; Quality, Practicality & Invention. Quality in the materials chosen and the time taken to craft. Practicality in that every piece is infinitely wearable. Invention is the added spark that provokes curiosity. This is why we work with him.

Our response to this unique and inspiring brand character is a detailed approach and execution that has drawn upon both Oliver's love of National Geographic and explorers from a forgotten age.

The Stag Beetle illustration by Janine Trott, commissioned by Marque is a lovely and intriguing reference to Victorian/Edwardian insect collectors, framing & cataloguing.

The logotype is a re-cut typewriter font inspired by a pre-school, utilitarian explorer aesthetic. The new brand can be seen across all merchandising, no more so than in Oliver's flagship store on Lamb's Conduit Street in London.

London-based art historian David Anfam has curated the exhibition which will feature more than 30 works by artists including Mark Rothko, Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, Clyfford Still, Lee Krasner and David Smith.

Marque was appointed in February and has been commissioned to develop the identity and supporting materials both for the New York launch and the inaugural exhibition.

The opening in New York is the latest phase of the international expansion of Haunch of Venison following the recent acquisition of the gallery- founded in London in 2002 by Harry Blain and Graham Southern-by Christie's International. Totaling 17,000 square feet, Haunch of Venison New York was designed by New York architect Steven Learner and features a double-height atrium and five exhibition galleries.

Welcome

On June 1st, Third Eye Design changed its name to Marque.

We decided to do this because, over the past 18 months, we came to recognize a subtle but significant shift in our business. This was driven primarily by the people that we have engaged with and by our response to them.

Our clients, tending invariably to be entrepreneurial in their outlook, have identified the need for a specialized, dedicated and, above all, a particularly crafted approach to the development and communication of their brands.

Our organization has enjoyed and embraced these exciting, although at times, demanding changes, as we also want our business to behave and grow dynamically not mechanically.

Over this period we've come to believe that being adaptive – attuned to change – is now one of our strongest qualities. We have become so, not only because it will make us better at how we fulfill clients' needs but also better at how we will better understand and fulfill our own.

More so, after having been together for 14 years as Third Eye Design, we came to recognize that our company was actually re-configuring.

And that our own identity must adapt also.

Welcome.

Vying for the coveted D&AD pencils has finished for 2008. Hoss Gifford, Marque's Digital Director, helped judge the website category, along with Creative Directors from 18 of the top digital creative companies in the world. The website category saw a big increase in entries with over 600 projects from across the world.

A pre-judging stage saw the entries culled to less than 100 - plenty for the judges to spend three days arguing over. The final results were revealed at a ceremony on Thursday 15 May 2008 in the Royal Festival Hall in London. Here are some of Hoss’s favourite entries.

Louis Vuitton Journeys

It's refreshing to see a luxury brand using narrative to such great effect. Don't miss the Keith Richards profile that's been added since the judging.

Uniqlock
If you're going to spend your entire marketing budget on a website, this is how to do it. Any site that has us staring at cardigans for 15 minutes is doing something right.

HBO Voyeur

When a network invests this much on content for a project that only exists as a website and an installation, you know they are looking beyond the limited world of television.

Get The Glass

North Kingdom quite rightly won a black pencil for this masterpiece which truly sets the new benchmark when it comes to production values on a website.

The photography, which included modern takes on The Macallan's six brand pillars: natural colour; the spiritual home; the finest cut; exceptional oak casks; curiously small stills; and peerless spirit, reinterpreted The Macallan as a product that also fits comfortably in a contemporary world. Marque went on to develop provenance photography of the distillery and pack photography of The Macallan in Lalique – the most expensive single malt in the world.

During August 2007 over 1.3million tickets were sold for 1,800 different shows. 261 venues across one of the world's most historic and famous cities showcased over 28,000 performances.

For the third year, we were once again proud to be commissioned to create and produce the media campaign theme, the accompanying marketing materials and the advertising.

To do this we devised a brand language through a partnership with the hugely creative talent of Chrissie Macdonald. Primarily, this has to be able to support the immense diversity of activity. However it also has to be immediately understandable by an international audience while at the same time be sophisticated enough to be used across a range of marketing platforms.

Our brief has been to help Simon carefully target a design conscious, modern market through his expanding range that incorporates innovative flavours – including lemon and pepper, and orange and cardamom.

Through an engaging, ongoing relationship Marque have worked to develop this British brand success from the base up, creating the brand identity, positioning and a range of over fifty different pieces of packaging

Kshocolat now export to two dozen luxury markets worldwide and can be seen in places such as British Airways First Class, Harvey Nichols, Liberty and Wholefoods Market.

The Common Guild are dedicated to producing a dynamic programme of contemporary visual arts projects.

In reference to the organizations name and the idea of a group of craftsmen or a governing body, we aimed to create an identifying mark, which could be stamped, etched or embossed. This would serve to 'authenticate' the diverse range of Common Guild activities: exhibitions and events, including gallery-based exhibitions, non-gallery projects, interventions and collaborations. The delicate line-work and application of the logo mark are a direct reference to a printers 'chop marks'.

The logo mark works alongside a palate of 3 typefaces to allow for an adaptive tone of voice across all future design work and importantly, to accommodate and respect the intent of the respective artists involved in CG projects.

Marque’s long-term relationship (2004-2008) with iconic outerwear manufacturer Mackintosh has included the development of their graphic identity, packaging, brand iconography and notably key textile patterns. As such our roles have been many with Mackintosh. Amongst the highlights: the launch of the first ever Mackintosh on line experience and the art direction of a sophisticated visual approach for the Brand across its seasonal press books.

Begg are recognised as the manufacturer of the finest cashmere accessories in the world. Based in Ayrshire, Scotland, they are renowned in the textile industry for producing a unique cashmere material using a combination of contemporary design coupled with technology, craft and process that dates back many hundreds of years. Unsurprisingly, their clients include other very well known French and Italian 'Craft Houses'.

In recent years however Begg has been faced with an interesting and familiar problem. With the demise of the Multi Fibre trade agreement, countries with a large cheaper labour forces have been handed the potential to dominate the textile industry.

In response to this and in order to sustain growth, Begg have devised a strategy to strengthen its own brand. With this in mind, Marque was brought on board to help launch Begg own branded products. The result is a perfect combination of craft and dynamism, evoking the spirit of the brand – the identity evolving into a beautiful array of foil blocks, die stamps and textured paper stocks – the photography and art direction looking at the cashmere as art.

We worked with River Island one of
the UK's leading high street fashion retailers, with over 200 stores, during 2006 and 2007 on the art direction and production of press books, for both menswear and womenswear collections. Our purpose was to expose the range to the widest possible audience, to demonstrate practical ways of using the collection while also resonating with the Fashion press through contemporary styling.

Over three seasons, we art directed a creative team which included the fashion photographer Barnaby Roper, with styling by French GQ Fashion Editor, James Sleaford.

Following the acquisition of Factiva by Dow Jones, the three business units of Dow Jones Enterprise Media Group now represent a global user base in excess of 2 million individuals who engage with subscription financial reporting both on and offline.

Marque was appointed last summer to develop a major communications framework and visual identity system that would unify but differentiate the group. The rebranding activity involved extensive workshops and focus groups with Dow Jones’ international marketing teams in London, New York and Princeton.

Through this process we produced an extensive brand tool kit and a set of guidelines that repositioned the group visually and that consolidated all its materials, both in print and digital.

Working with Dalton Maag, this also necessitated the creation of a new version of the Cooper Typeface for Dow Jones.

Entirely because of the dynamic partnership between two men – Shelbourne Development’s Chairman Garret Kelleher, and Architect, Santiago Calatrava – The Chicago Spire, when it opens in three years time, will be not just the world's tallest and most spectacular residential building but an enduring, global icon of engineering and sculpture.

Marque were commissioned by Shelbourne Development in February 2007 to articulate, through a comprehensive programme of branding, advertising, identity and marketing, the vision for The Chicago Spire.

Our approach to this has been inspired and energized by the two key drivers which underpin this remarkable building: a progressive, entrepreneurial spirit and a dedication to a design for humanity within a kinetic sculpture.

Over the course of a strong and responsive relationship, our brief and role has been extended to cover a broader branding and advisory responsibilities. This has included regular brand workshops, an international traveling exhibition and the development of a unique offline application and presentation tool that can facilitate and keep pace with a dynamic international Sales and Marketing drive.
