Yeah, so I can’t even remember how many lawnmowers we’ve gone through in recent years. And it’s not much consolation if the guarantee is still valid or not, if you have to wait 2 months as they fix it.  And the whole while your lawn is turning into a jungle.  When you get it back, what happens?

You don’t even get through mowing the whole yard before it breaks again!

I’m going back about 4 months to when this Göteborg thing all started.  I had only talked through emails and over the phone with Alf, the Senior Artist for the company and had no idea what he actually looked like.   I was really trying to think what a game creator nerd would look like.  All the creators I’ve seen or met in Fonland look exactly like the stereotypical, pizza eating, cola drinking nerd…

Luckily they had my picture from my CV…

I FINALLY got internet.  The trouble I had to go through to get it though. They promised me a home connection from work, but that didn’t seem to be happening… So I planned to just get it myself.

Everywhere I went it was the same answer… “Sorry you need a Personnummer” In other words a social security number.  Everyone kept telling me that you can’t get one until all the immigration stuff is settled. But on the other hand I also need one to get PAID… so I dig around and find out that I can get a temporary social security number… WHOOHOO! I put the papers in and  a few days later I get it and off I go to  buy an internet subscription.

In goes my temporary social security number at the store computer and everything comes to a halt… “Oh… you have to be in the country for at least 8 months before you can have an internet connection”

A little more time goes by and then I find a “cheap” pre-paid connection at Gigantti.  I had to by the USB moden hub thingy as well, but by now I don’t care…

So now after almost 2 months I’m able to talk to the family without sky high telephone bills.

Well, with today’s technology, Skype etc. you might say, but it’s harder than you might think.  First of all I showed up when a majority of the staff were on vacation, so a lot of stuff (paperwork) couldn’t be done until they got back.  Second, I can’t get internet connection without a (swedish) social security number.  To get that done means some paperwork and possibly months of waiting.

So ALL internet stuff I do, (Skype chat with the wife, strip updates etc. ) is done on the worksite.  Luckily they’re a bunch of understanding people, but I can’t spend ALL day doing my personal stuff so…

Stick with me, there’ll be tidbits along the way and I’ll/we’ll be back!

And what the heck do I want to move there for?

Well, it’s a big game company, it’s not in Finland and they want to hire me. I think those are three reasons good enough.  Nothing is 100% certain yet, but if all goes well, I shall go over for the trial period of six months and Kirsi and the kids will follow some months after that.  So yes that means some pretty HUGE amount of time away from the family. Besides the fact that Kirsi and I have basically been together 24/7 since we met (long before we were even a couple) and being away from the family for that long of a time will be pure hell, it also means that there will be fewer strips going up. I don’t even know if/when I’ll have my own computer/ internet.  These things might take some time and I hope that you (once again) understand, that if all of this happens, I’ll have a lot of things taking up my time.  Especially at the beginning.

I’m not sure how things will go, but I’ll keep you guys N’ gals posted.

(A little bit of collective finger cossing wouldn’t hurt either )
