We were really happy to see the North Kitsap Herald pick up the story on George Othur Snow, a resident at Martha & Mary Health and Rehab Center who is celebrating his 103 birthday on February 26. This makes George one of the oldest residents of the city.

George Snow Celebrates 103 Years

George Othur Snow, a resident at the Martha & Mary Health and Rehab Center, celebrates his 103 birthday on February 26, 2012. Mr. Snow was born in Gilroy, California on February 26, 1909, the youngest of six children. His birthday will be honored at the facility for a special dining party with other residents on Thursday, February 16, 2012 in the Health Center Chapel. His three children, his daughters-in-law Donna & Charlene Snow and his granddaughter Justine Snow will celebrate his 103rd birthday at lunch at Martha & Mary on February 26th.

Below is a brief biography prepared by family:

George Othur Snow was born in Gilroy, California on February 26, 1909, the youngest of six children. After his father died when George was very young, his mother remarried the family moved to Sacramento, CA

He attended Sacramento High School, where he was a member of the Junior ROTC rifle team and selected to participate in the national target shooting contest. He traveled by train with one other competitor to the East Coast for the event. After completing two years at Sacramento Junior College he entered the University of California Dental School, San Francisco, graduating as a Doctor of Dental Surgery.

He married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Nix, of Sacramento. He completed his residency at the Weimar Tuberculosis Sanatorium near Auburn, California, before he was commissioned as a first lieutenant in the US Army prior to WW II. After a short tour with the Army, he began his private dental practice in Sacramento, CA.

After the World War II broke out George volunteered for the US Navy and was commissioned a Navy Lieutenant in the Dental Corps. He served at the Del Monte Pre-Flight School in Monterey, CA. He was then detailed to the US Marine Corps as a Captain serving at a overseas staging camp near Camp Pendelton, CA. He spent the rest of the war at the Naval Air Station, Barbers Point, Hawaii, performing dental work for injured naval aviators.

He returned to private practice in Sacramento after the war, where he was a family dentist and a specialist in bridge work for more than 30 years.

He was one of four national rifle team champions, as well as being a national individual champion in the William Randolph Hearst Civilian Marksmanship competition.

His other hobbies included photography, boating, amateur radio, fishing and he enjoyed unusual cars. For many years he designed and made jewelry in gold and silver using the lost wax casting method. He moved to Port Townsend in the early 1990s.

George and Margaret lived in many places over the course of their long marriage, including Sacramento and Aptos, CA, Beaverton, OR, and Port Townsend, WA. They raised three children, Robert, living in Port Ludlow, WA, Michael, in Beaverton, OR and Kathleen, in Port Townsend, WA.

Currently living at Martha & Mary in Poulsbo, George still enjoys reading, looking at cars and jewelry, and visits from family and friends.
