It won't be a verification call. Expect to be interviewed about your small business. Afterward, you will be given access to the Google AdWords on-demand training course, consisting of informative YouTube videos. (Though simple and basic, Google mixes labels and terms in these fast paced sessions that can make it a bit hard to follow in places).

There are 4 lessons to complete to become a member of Google Engage, each ending with a code. Jot down all 4 codes and enter the the codes into a form to become a member of Engage.

Lesson # 1: The Introduction, with a runtime of 24:02 minutes.

The first tutorial (aka course) introduces the online world and explains where Google fits into it. They discuss important trends. According to Google the economic downturn is fueling online growth. Or, "staying in is the new going out." Staying in saves on travel and other expenses. In other words, there is a massive captive audience out there eager to go online to make Google searches and see your ads. There was nothing surprising in other facts presented, such as, "online ads have cannibalized traditional newspaper ads" and, "TV is the biggest driver of online searches." Great reasons to commit your ad dollars to online ad campaigns with Google AdWords. Google calls itself, "one of the top 3 global Internet Platforms" (along with YouTube as the 2nd largest search engine in the world after Google, with 2 billion videos viewed per day globally, and Facebook also mentioned as number two, in an apples and oranges comparison--and this is where it can get confusing at time in a blur of so much information to process).

Google does state quite clearly that the "Google Display (Ad) Network is the largest in the world, exposing each internet user to an average of 30 ads per day."

Google allows ads within Google Maps (aka Places), YouTube, Gmail, and Google Checkout. If you own a brick and mortar business in any city or town, aka a local business, it makes sense to advertise on Google Maps so that your ad appears in online searches only within a reasonable radius of your business.

There is The Science of Search that includes Search Framework, Psychographics, and Targeting options, including placement targeting from hand selected websites to advertise on, and category advertising--a list of sites within a category to select from.

Keywords figure into many aspects of creating any pay-per-click ad campaign. In fact, Google used the phrase "keyword advertising campaigns." With keywords, you also have options to choose when and where your ad appears on the page when someone does a search, and how much you pay per click, as well as other options. The more targeted your list of keywords raises your ad on the page and lowers your costs. Google AdWords offers 6 ad sizes and shapes or formats--banners, and a variety of boxes-- text ads, image ads, video ads, and rich media ads that encourage interaction with the user.

Lesson one contained lots more about how "Search Drives Results," Google Network Structure, SEO and Google page ranking, and looked at Google Search, Google Display Network, YouTube, Google Places, and Mobile advertising solutions.

With mobile phone ads, "Smart Phones are taking over the market with highest number of users", according to Google. Google has a new mobile phone Click to Call feature in a beta trial ad campaign. Apparently, a user sees an ad which contains a button and with one click the user can connect with the company in the ad.

Lesson # 2: Generating business with Google AdWords had a runtime of 18:09 minutes.

Lesson #3: Optimizing Adword accounts, with a Runtime 17:11 minutes.

Google recommends organizing your ad campaigns by topic--returning to keywords, but more in-depth. How to Optimize keywords--use different keyword match types to meet your needs: such as avoiding duplicate keywords across ad groups (for tracking the effectiveness of each ad and keyword), broad and expanded match keywords, high traffic keywords, negative keywords, phrase match, and [exact match] using brackets. The brackets tell Google to bring up your add for the search whenever the exact words in the brackets appear in the search. Google states that what makes a good keywords list are keywords that are directly related to each other.

In this lesson they teach methods for getting the most out of your text ads, Bidding Strategy--how much will you pay per click and how to calculate the best amount to pay. Optimizing Ad Text, including calls to action, targeting the right languages and locations, and creating highly specific ad groups. Then there is performance, tracking, budgeting and strategic budgeting.

Google states that for effectiveness, an AdWords ad account structure should mirror the structure of the website being advertised.

Also, some ad campaigns are not intended to generate sales, but are dedicated specifically to promoting and branding, to create online awareness of a company.

Lessons #4: Multiple Accounts Managements, Runtime 15:45 minutes.

An AdWords tool called My Client Center is a single user online interface for managing a few or hundreds of AdWords Accounts, dashboard style, for individuals or agents who manage client AdWord campaigns for a fee.

My Client Center is a behind the scenes management center for all the ads online placed via Google.

AdWords Editor is a free application that enables offline viewing or editing and managing multiple accounts (one at a time). You can share (with clients) and receive feedback within the AdWords Editor, where you can experiment with ad changes before they go live.

At the end of lesson #4 find the 4th code and enter all four into the form to become an Engage member and access that "portal to the world of online advertising."

Postcards an Effective Marketing Tool for Your Business

It goes without saying that for a business to thrive they must have reliable customers that continue to use them on a regular basis. The most savvy business minds will want to generate more business through their already established customer base by delivering an outstanding service that their consumers will want to rave to their friends about.
A clever marketer will look to use what information they have gained from their loyal consumers and apply it so that they can expand their market and generate more business. To tailor a service or a product to a particular segment of the market it is important to know as much as you can about the people that make up that segment and try to meet their needs as fully as possible.

A great option for smaller businesses

One hurdle that a marketer in a smaller business must overcome is restricted finances. In smaller companies the marketing budget is likely to be much tighter than in larger firms and so it is important to be creative with the marketing campaign. Far too many marketing departments feel that they must have grand TV advertising campaigns or radio ads when this is not necessarily the case. It is easy to generate interest and increase business in other, less expensive ways.

One idea that has shown excellent results in the past has been to use postcards to draw attention. If they are created well with the customer in mind, pitching the product, service, or brand correctly, then a postcard can make the world of difference. If you are aiming for a specific demographic then find out what you can about your target audience. Where are they financially and what can they spend? What are their interests and activities? Find out what their average earnings are too. If you can identify what they are likely to think they need then you can position your product or service as a possible solution.

When to send out your cards
Once you have created your postcard you can then think about how often or when you are intending on sending it. You will want to mail enough so that your postcard is seen on a regular basis and strikes a chord with the customer but not so much that you have overwhelmed and bombarded your customers. Striking a balance is ideal. Your target audience need to recognise your brand without feeling pestered or frustrated with junk mailing.

One option is to send out your postcards and then make a follow-up call to see how they were received and introduce yourself properly. You could also provide your customers with the opportunity to direct their enquiries toward you and answer any questions they may have had about your service or product.

Building great relationships for the future
If you create a purpose for your postcards, so as to add value to them, then why not add in a discount or incentive or advertise a sale you have on. You could even enclose a coupon that your customers can use with that postcard, for instance. If you can effectively market yourself with postcards, incentives and follow up calls then you are likely to build up a strong relationship with your targeted audience and increase your customer base over time.

Most of the doctors' offices that I have walked into over the past few years make me feel like a low class citizen. I walk in the office, smile at the receptionist, and she says "Sign in" and turns away. At a local dermatologist's office, I walked in one day with my daughter, signed in, and the young lady immediately slid a glass partition to the closed position and went back to doing her nails.
As a consultant, I had a mini stroke right then and there, and after being revived (just kidding) I almost walked out of the office. I was shocked at how little the staff cared about the patients. But in these days of managed care and discount services, maybe I was expecting too much.

In my own dental practice, we made the effort to greet every patient who walked in the door, and when a new patient entered, we knew to expect them and my office manager made the effort to shake hands, introduce herself, and sit with them and just talk for a minute or two. My staff made sure that they greeted each patient by name, introduced themselves, and presented a genuine air of caring -because they did care, it was quite easy. We all had an understanding that we were there for the patients and we were thankful they were there for us! This attitude was instilled into each and every person who worked for us.

As a customer, or dental patient, you will tend to observe the employees of the business you are working with. If the staff seems downtrodden, unhappy, or downright miserable, you are far less likely to refer friends or family to that business. But, if you walk into a business in which the staff is upbeat and really seems to want to be there, your mind equates this to be a good place to do business. This is free advertising folks! And it is so simple to do. And if the business owner is walking around the restaurant talking to customers, asking how they like their food, and just having fun with everything, this goes a long way. Customers notice these things, and even if it is just on a subconscious level, it works!

Let's run a few scenarios of some my own experiences. First of course is that wonderful dermatology office where the receptionist closed the glass partition in my face so her nails could be done in private. To date, no one in my family has been back to that office. My next experience is at the local grocery store - two minutes from the house. One day, I went there and had to use their restroom. It was so disgusting that I decided it was time for a change. Now, we shop at Wegman's - their restrooms are very clean. My third experience was at the local Greek hole-in-the-wall restaurant - a place called 'Pan Am Family Restaurant' - the staff there said hello, asked about our children, and were generally nice. They all focused on the customers at all times. Now, if anyone asks me where I shop, I tell them "Wegman's" and why, and just this past week I gave out the restaurant's name to two people.

This is part of what internal marketing is about - setting a tone in the business that says you care about the customers without actually saying it. Most of my own consulting work is with medical or dental practices. Generally, the staff in most dental practices is pretty good to work with since they understand what is expected of them. For some reason, it is the medical practices that need a little repair to their staff. I think this is because they are worked hard and have to deal with all these discount insurances - if you ask a staff member for an honest answer, they will usually tell you that dealing with insurance really stinks. This can easily bring a person down, so a good business owner will keep an eye on her insurance handler.

A good way to keep tabs on how you 'present' your business to the world is to do surveys and find out what your customers or patients or clients think about you. In your survey, have them express what they think of your attitude, service, staff, products, fees, etc. You may not like what you hear, but this is a great way to determine what people are looking at and what you can possibly improve. Sure, your feelings will be hurt once in a while....maybe a lot in the beginning.....but as time goes by you can make positive changes. I will admit that my first surveys as a dentist really did bother me a lot) So, be strong, buck up and take it like a business owner, and just find out what people are saying about you - it's worth it!
