Gone are the days when people balk at you if you say you met your partner online. Pennsylvania has taken the unusual step of suing an AI company for practicing medicine without a license.

In a lawsuit filed May 1, the state is targeting Character.AI after an investigator found a chatbot on the platform posing as a licensed psychiatrist and providing what the state characterizes as medical advice.

According to the complaint, filed by the Pennsylvania Department of State and State Board of Medicine, a Professional Conduct Investigator for the state created a free account on Character.AI and searched for psychiatric characters. He selected one called "Emilie," described on the platform as a "Doctor of psychiatry."

The investigator told Emilie he had been feeling sad, empty, tired, and unmotivated. The chatbot mentioned depression and offered to conduct an assessment to determine whether medication might help.

When pressed on whether she was licensed in Pennsylvania, Emilie said she was and even provided a specific license number. The state checked and found that the number doesn't exist.

The complaint also states Emilie claimed she attended medical school at Imperial College London, has practiced for seven years, and holds a full specialty registration in psychiatry with the General Medical Council in the UK.

In a similar case, 404 Media reported last year that Instagram AI chatbots were pretending to be licensed therapists, even inventing license numbers when prompted for credentials by the user.

Pennsylvania is seeking an injunction ordering Character.AI to stop allowing its platform to engage in the unlawful practice of medicine. The company has more than 20 million monthly active users worldwide and hosts more than 18 million user-created chatbot characters, according to the complaint.

In an email to Mashable, a Character.AI spokesperson declined to comment on the lawsuit. Further, they added that "our highest priority is the safety and well-being of our users. The user-created Characters on our site are fictional and intended for entertainment and roleplaying."

The spokesperson added that the company "prioritizes responsible product development and has robust internal reviews and red-teaming processes in place to assess relevant features."

A much bigger legal battle looms over AI health

The Pennsylvania lawsuit lands in the middle of an already messy legal debate over what AI is actually allowed to tell you — and whether any of it is even admissible in court.

As Mashable's Chase DiBenedetto reported, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has publicly advocated for "AI privilege," arguing that chatbot conversations should be afforded the same legal protections as conversations with a therapist or an attorney. Courts have so far been split, with two federal judges reaching opposite conclusions on the question within weeks of each other earlier this year.

The stakes are high on both sides. Legal experts warn that sweeping AI privilege protections could effectively shield companies from accountability, making it harder to subpoena chat logs and internal records when something goes wrong. Meanwhile, health AI is booming — $1.4 billion flowed into healthcare-specific generative AI in 2025 alone, according to Menlo Ventures — and much of it operates outside of HIPAA protections.

Pennsylvania is one of several states to have introduced an AI Health bill this year, following a trend of states that aren't waiting for Washington to act.

There's only one thing more shocking than The Bear dropping surprise episode "Gary," and that's the ending of the episode itself.

Written by The Bear stars Ebon Moss-Bachrach and Jon Bernthal, "Gary" flashes back to a work trip Richie (Moss-Bachrach) and Mikey (Bernthal) once took to Gary, Indiana. Their worst impulses soon derail their mission, culminating in Mikey drunkenly (and publicly) dressing down Richie's penchant for fucking up, and Richie missing the birth of his daughter.

The entire episode takes place long before The Bear Season 1, except for one somber coda that could have massive repercussions for The Bear Season 5. "Gary"s final scene cuts from Richie and Mikey sitting in Mikey's car to Richie sitting alone in his car in the present day. He stares at his empty passenger seat, reminiscing about Mikey. Then, as he pulls forward into an intersection, another car careens straight into him. Cue the credits, along with my incredulous yell, "Did Richie just die?"

So, did Richie really just die in The Bear?

Here's the thing: The Bear probably isn't going to kill off Richie, one of its most beloved leads, during a surprise episode that dropped between seasons. Especially not when the show is gearing up for its fifth and final installment. However, Richie's car crash could be the major event that sets Season 5 in motion.

At the end of Season 4, Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) quit The Bear, choosing to step away from the kitchen in the hopes of healing himself. He turned full control of the restaurant over to Sydney (Ayo Edebiri), along with Richie and Natalie (Abby Elliott). What does Carmy's upcoming journey of self-discovery look like? Even he's not sure. He just knows it should take place far, far away from the stressful environment of any restaurant kitchen. That includes his family, both work and blood-related.

But you know what could bring Carmy back into the fold in Season 5? A need to be there for an injured Richie, and to support the rest of the reeling restaurant staff. Basically, the end of "Gary" appears to be a bridge to the start of Season 5, and the catalyst that will reunite Carmy with the people he walked away from in Season 4.

It's a bit of a bizarre move on The Bear's end, in no small part because a car-crash cliffhanger sends the show skidding into soap territory. But it's also a strange choice heading into Season 5. Why relegate such a key incident to a standalone episode, instead of keep it as part of the season itself? Plus, in tacking such a shocking moment onto the end of "Gary," the episode loses some of its power. Instead of leaving viewers contemplating Mikey and Richie's dynamic, they're left with the WTF factor of the car crash and questions about what's next. There's no meditation on The Bear's past, just a collision with its future.

"Gary" is now streaming on Hulu. The Bear Season 5 premieres this June on Hulu.

Last week, OpenAI managed to stop ChatGPT from talking about goblins all the time. This week, there's a whole new model for users to play with.

The company announced in a blog post on Tuesday that ChatGPT 5.5 Instant has begun rolling out to all users as the new default model for the popular AI chatbot. The new model is a follow-up to GPT 5.5, which was released in April.

GPT-5.5 Instant replaces 5.3 Instant, which will remain available for the next three months for paid users but will otherwise be sunsetted.

Unlike Claude Opus 4.7 from Anthropic and GPT-5.5, which are only available to paid customers, GPT-5.5 Instant is "available to everyone." OpenAI says it should produce fewer hallucinations and better overall results for everyday ChatGPT usage.

"This update makes everyday interactions more useful and more enjoyable: stronger and tighter answers across subject areas, a more natural conversational tone, and better use of the context you’ve already shared when personalization can help," OpenAI's blog post said.

According to OpenAI, GPT-5.5 Instant produced 52.5 percent fewer hallucinated claims in internal testing than GPT-5.3 in "high stakes" topics like law, finance, and medicine. In addition, the new model "reduced inaccurate claims by 37.3% on especially challenging conversations users had flagged for factual errors."

The company also says the new model is better at deciding when to use web search for a prompt and analyzing image uploads than before. The new model is also allegedly more concise in its answers, while also maintaining something of a personality in how it talks to the user. GPT-5.5 Instant should also be better at understanding and referencing context from a connected Gmail account and other integrations to provide quality answers.

And, again, most importantly, it should avoid mentioning goblins unless absolutely necessary.

Apple Maps: Ads and Suggested Places

Two new features are coming to Apple Maps with the release of iOS 26.5 — that is, if you consider the introduction of ads on the platform as a new feature, as Apple does.

Apple is bringing ads into its proprietary Apple Maps app with the latest iOS. We first reported on this in March, and Apple is now actively seeking advertisers.

Ads will be clearly labeled, according to Apple. Businesses will be able to run paid advertising on Apple Maps in a similar way to how app developers can run ads in Apple's App Store. Local ads will show up in Apple Maps based on a user's location. Ads will show in Apple Maps search results and in Suggested Places.

Speaking of Suggested Places, this is another new feature coming to Apple Maps with iOS 26.5. While ads will also show up in this section, it's not purely an advertising space. Suggested Places will provide users with recommendations based on the user's most recent searches, as well as what other nearby Apple Maps users are searching for.

RCS end-to-end encryption

RCS, or Rich Communication Services, is basically the messaging protocol that enables iPhone and Android users to message each other with high-quality media, read receipts, and typing indicators. Basically, it provides iPhone users with the familiar Messenger experience when texting with Android users.

With iOS 26.5, Apple is introducing a layer of protection by enabling end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for those RCS messages. 

E2EE will be turned on by default with iOS 26.5. However, iPhone users will be able to turn the feature on or off by going to their Settings app and toggling the End-to-End Encryption option in the Messages section. 

With E2EE for ‌RCS‌, messages sent between iPhone and Android users will be encrypted, meaning they cannot be read by third parties.

Other new features

While those are the major new features coming to iOS 26.5, there are other new additions on the way as well.

For example, when a user connects Apple accessories like the Magic Keyboard to an iPhone via USB-C, the device will automatically connect via Bluetooth as well with iOS 26.5.

Transferring from an iPhone to an Android device with iOS 26.5 provides a new option setting to select which message attachments to include in the transfer. Users can pick all, 1 year, or 30 days as options.

Apple Books also has a new Trophies and Medals feature that rewards users based on their audiobooks and reading habits.

Finally, Apple will also release a new iPhone wallpaper celebrating Pride with iOS 26.5. The Pride wallpaper will match the previously announced Apple Watch Pride band and watch face. 

iOS 26.5 may also potentially bring a new feature for users in the EU. Under the EU's Digital Markets Act, Apple must allow iPhone features like notification, Live Activities, and AirPods pairing to work with third-party headphones and smartwatches. While this has been included in previous iOS beta releases, including the beta for iOS 26.5, it has yet to be included in any public release. We'll see if Apple includes it this time with the iOS 26.5.

Finally, iOS 27 is also coming later this year, and we may learn more about it during WWDC 2026 in June.

Vine is back. Sort of. Which is a strange sentence to say in 2026.

Almost a decade after the popular short-form video app had its doors shuttered by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, it has been relaunched as Divine, funded by the very same man who killed it.

Divine serves as both a new host for Vine's famous six-second videos and an archive of 500,000 videos from OG Vine, which are also hosted on the app. Additionally, one of the stated mission goals with the relaunch of Vine is "freedom from AI slop."

So, on top of the archive of old Vines, new videos must be human-made, and there's even a filter for that specifically in the app.

To enforce the no-AI rule, Divine requires users to either record videos directly within the app or run them through a human verification tool before posting, according to The Guardian. The verification tool is powered by the human rights nonprofit, the Guardian Project.

The project is being led by Evan Henshaw-Plath, a former Twitter employee known online as Rabble, who originally set out to give old Vines a permanent home. Funding flows through Dorsey's nonprofit, and Other Stuff, which backs open-source social media projects. Dorsey acknowledged the original platform's shortcomings in a statement to The Guardian, saying a core principle of the relaunch is that creators will always own their content and followers, while also being able to build their own revenue off of them.

Divine had a test launch back in November of last year that we covered at the time. In an interview with TechCrunch during the 2025 test launch, Henshaw-Plath told the outlet that the goal was to recapture an era of social media built around real people, algorithm control, and authentic content. Not unlike what Vine represented before it was sent to an early grave.

Vine peaked at 100 million monthly active users and helped launch the careers of creators like Logan Paul before Twitter pulled the plug in 2017. Its DNA lives on pretty visibly in TikTok, and Elon Musk once floated the idea of rebooting Vine to compete it. That never happened, and now Dorsey has beaten him to it, ironically enough.

Still, Divine enters a short-form video landscape that looks nothing like 2013. TikTok is entrenched. Instagram Reels is entrenched. YouTube Shorts averages more than 200 billion daily views. Six seconds of human-made video is a bold proposition against that backdrop — but maybe that's exactly the point.

The Met Gala has always been fashion’s biggest stage, but in 2026, it might also be its most online.

This year's dress code, "Fashion Is Art," tied to the museum's new Costume Institute exhibition opening May 10, set the tone for a night where the line between garment and gallery piece all but disappeared. There was double Sabrina last night as the singer wore a dress inspired by the 1954 Audrey Hepburn film Sabrina, Vogue reported. The gown was a custom Dior made of tulle and actual bedazzled film strips, and according to Vogue, if you zoom in, you could see Sabrina stars Humphrey Bogart and William Holden.

The "House Tour" singer was praised for the film references, and also harkened back to film and TV references in her recent Coachella set. Carpenter

Chamberlain wore a custom Mugler by Miguel Castro Freitas, according to Vogue, and squarely fit the dress code "Fashion is Art." The top of the dress looks like sweeping yellow brushstrokes around her torso, cascading to the multicolor, blue-dominant skirt. The sleeves were also unique, with long, thin fringe.

Some X users said Chamberlain understood the theme better than other attendees, with others even calling her the best-dressed.

One of the most unique looks of last night's Met Gala was Bad Bunny's. While he's in the midst of his Debí Tirar Más Fotos World Tour, Benito took to the red carpet last night in a sleek all-black suit, looking…considerably older. 

Bad Bunny wore prosthetics to appear elderly, with white hair and sagging skin. The look is meant to harken to the Costume Institute's 2026 exhibition and the different body types explored within, particularly the aging body, according to Vogue. Makeup artist Mike Marino transformed Bad Bunny into a grandpa version of himself, complete with realistic age spots and wrinkles.

The monochromatic suit was adorned with a large pussy bow, which is a reference to designer Charles James's garment "Bustle," Vogue reported.

Some online commentators commended Bad Bunny on the look. Men's style blog @dieworkwear said it was, "Like an elegant version of Johnny Knoxville's gag in Jackass."

Google I/O is set for May 19, but the company is once again going to provide some Android news a week ahead of time, too.

The company announced on Tuesday that it will host "The Android Show" on May 12 at 1 p.m. ET. Google didn't provide a lot of specifics about what to expect, but the basic idea is to showcase "why this is one of the biggest years for Android yet." Last year, Google also hosted The Android Show ahead of I/O, showing off the new Material 3 Expressive design language alongside new Gemini features like screen sharing.

You can watch The Android Show live when the event starts streaming on YouTube, and there's also an event webpage on Google's site. Mashable will be providing live coverage during both The Android Show and Google I/O, so check back for the latest updates from Google-land.

If last year is any guide, by hosting an Android-specific event ahead of I/O, Google can then focus on Gemini and all things artificial intelligence during its annual developers conference. The main I/O keynote is usually where Google drops its biggest Android news each year. However, AI was the main focus of Google I/O 2025, and that's also what we expect from Google I/O 2026.

Based on public betas, we know that Android 17 is bringing a new multitasking UI to Android devices, as well as some new options for screen recording. There will probably be a lot more than that, but we'll have to wait until later this month to find out for sure.

Perhaps Google will give us some fun Android 17 tidbits ahead of the proper I/O keynote this year.

Prominent leaker billbil-kun published a report detailing the specs of previously unknown new headphones from Sony, which could be called "Sony 1000X The ColleXion" (first reported by The Walkman Blog). The headphones may also be part of a larger collection of products with the tagline, "Master the art of listening."

These premium 1000XM headphones also appear to have leaked visually via photos of British actor Damson Idris, who was seen allegedly wearing them in NYC (via Reddit).

Photos of Idris in New York City over the weekend show an unknown pair of Sony headphones and a travel case, which match the details reported by billbil-kun. The headphones have white ear cups and a metal headband, a departure from Sony's usual headphone style.

It seems like every week another app or digital platform shuts down unexpectedly, and this time social media app Threads may be experiencing an outage.

On the morning of May 5, multiple Mashable editors were unable to access the Threads app.

DownDetector showed a spike in user error reports for Threads beginning around 8:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday morning. (Disclosure: DownDetector and Mashable are both owned by the same parent company, Ziff Davis.)

A majority of DownDetector users reported problems accessing the Threads app.

Threads, Meta's answer to X, reported having more than 400 million monthly users in 2025.

Mashable reached out to Meta for comment, and we'll update this story if we receive a response.

Password managers are supposed to make life easier for users by remembering their passwords and keeping them secure.

However, one cybersecurity researcher has discovered a quite concerning development regarding Microsoft Edge and how the web browser's password manager behaves.

According to researcher Tom Jøran Sønstebyseter Rønning, Microsoft Edge loads every saved password into memory at startup — in plaintext.

In a thread on X, Rønning detailed how the credentials are decrypted even if a user doesn't visit a site that uses the password manager during the user session.

"If an attacker gains administrative access on a terminal server, they can access the memory of all logged‑on user processes," ​​Rønning writes.

Edge is Microsoft's proprietary web browser based on the Chromium open-source project, the code base developed and maintained by Google. However, as Rønning shared, this issue involving plain text credentials does not appear in other Chromium-based browsers like Google Chrome.

"Edge is the only Chromium‑based browser I’ve tested that behaves this way," says ​​Rønning. "By contrast, Chrome uses a design that makes it far harder for attackers to extract saved passwords by simply reading process memory."

​​Rønning says he first reached out to Microsoft regarding his findings before publicly disclosing the issue. According to the cybersecurity researcher, Microsoft responded by saying this behavior in Microsoft Edge was "by design."

The German tech website Heise Online replicated the password issue. The site also noted that, according to well-established cybersecurity best practices, "passwords should only be decrypted at the time of use and deleted from memory very shortly thereafter."

Given Microsoft's alleged response to Rønning, users concerned about the potential issue should consider alternative password managers.

Crypto exchange Coinbase is laying off 14 percent of its workforce.

The decision has been made public by CEO Brian Armstrong. In a post on X, he explained that the layoffs are mainly due to two concerns: Bear market, and AI.

"Coinbase is well-capitalized, has diversified revenue streams, and is well-positioned to weather any storm," he wrote. "However, our business is still volatile from quarter to quarter [...] we’re currently in a down market and need to adjust our cost structure."

Cryptocurrencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum, are currently recovering after a sharp downturn that started late last year. The price of Bitcoin is currently at about $81,400, down from its highs of about $127,000 in August 2025.

Armstrong also explained that AI is changing how the company works. "Over the past year, I’ve watched engineers use AI to ship in days what used to take a team weeks (...) all of this has led us to an inflection point, not just for Coinbase, but for every company. The biggest risk now is not taking action," he wrote.

Affected workers will get a "comprehensive package" which includes a minimum of 16 weeks base pay for U.S. workers (plus 2 weeks per year worked), their next equity vest, and 6 months of COBRA, wrote Armstrong.

Coinbase is scheduled to release its Q1 2026 earnings report on May 7. The company reported a big revenue decline last quarter, and analysts, for the most part, expect another weak quarter.

Beyond that, his life and writing inspired the 2006 TV series Kitchen Confidential, starring Bradley Cooper; the 2015 drama Bone in the Throat; and the 2021 biographical documentary Roadrunner, which sparked controversy for its use of AI. Now, Tony will explore the early days of Bourdain's career, featuring The Holdovers' Dominic Sessa playing the man himself.

Directed by Matt Johnson (Nirvanna: The Band - The Show - The Movie), Tony begins with a 19-year-old Bourdain, spinning out after his ambition to become a writer hits a speed bump. But a job in a kitchen — working under a beguiling Antonio Banderas — will change everything.

To illustrate just how truly bizarre a place the president's Truth Social feed is, Jimmy Kimmel spent a couple of minutes breaking down what Trump posted between 11pm and midnight last Friday.

"At 11:13 he posted a thinly veiled, but definitely racist note about House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, followed two minutes later with a warning to Iran that said 'I have all the cards', holding a bunch of Uno cards — which is a game you win by having no cards," says Kimmel in the clip above. "This is what happens when you don't play with your children."

Summarising the president's posting habits, Kimmel goes on to reference a recent Daily Beast article that claimed Trump could only have gotten a full night's sleep five days in April, based on his feed.

"Last month he posted an average of 18 times a day," says Kimmel. "If you had a relative who was posting 18 times a day, you'd be worried about him, right?"

Amid the second phase of a high-profile child safety trial in New Mexico, Meta is announcing new measures designed to ensure teens on its platforms are subject to age-related protections.

Meta announced in a blog post Tuesday that parents in the U.S. on two of its social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram, will receive a notification with details about how to check and confirm their teens' ages on the company's apps.

All users that Meta has identified as a parent, not just adults who supervise a Teen Account, will receive the notification. The notification will include a link to a blog post Meta published a year ago on how to talk to teens about the importance of providing their correct age.

Meta also announced that age-detection technology will roll out to 27 countries in the European Union and Brazil. Additionally, the technology will apply to U.S. Facebook users for the first time.

In April 2025, Meta began using AI to identify teen users who listed an adult age in their account. The technology re-assigns those users to Meta's Teen Account product, which the company says has more stringent safety protections.

In the fall, independent experts who tested Teen Accounts published a report alleging that the product doesn't work as advertised. Among their findings, the researchers documented instances in which the guardrails failed to prevent inappropriate contact with strangers.

On Tuesday, Meta said that its AI technology would begin to analyze user profiles for "contextual clues" of their age, simplify the process for reporting suspected underage accounts, and strengthen its ability to stop underage users from opening new accounts.

Meta noted in its blog post that it believes lawmakers should require app stores to verify user age and provide that information to apps and developers.

Meta back on trial

Meta lost the first phase of the New Mexico trial in March when a jury found the company liable for misleading consumers about the safety of its platforms and endangering children. The suit was filed by the state's attorney general.

Meta has been ordered to pay the maximum penalties for each violation of New Mexico’s consumer protection laws, amounting to $375 million. The company has said it plans to appeal the decision.

In the bench trial, New Mexico's Department of Justice is seeking injunctive relief requiring Meta to pay additional damages of $3.75 billion and implement specific changes to protect children.

The proposed policies include effective age verification, blocking children under 13, limits on end-to-end messaging encryption for minors, and permanent bans for adult users who engage in or facilitate child exploitation.

Last week, Meta threatened to shut its platforms down in New Mexico in response to the state's demands.

"Many of the requests are technologically or practically infeasible and would essentially force Meta to build entirely separate apps for use only in New Mexico," the company said in its court filing, according to The Guardian. "Therefore, granting onerous relief could compel Meta to entirely withdraw Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp from the state as the only feasible means of compliance."

In court on Monday, Meta's counsel Alex Parkinson reiterated that stance, arguing that granting the state's injunctive relief in full would "genuinely make it untenable to continue offering Meta's products" in New Mexico.

State Attorney General Raul Torrez said that Meta is putting advertising revenue and profit ahead of the "safety of children."

"We know Meta has the ability to make these changes," Torrez said in a statement. "This is not about technological capability."

Don't expect photographs; the images are just simple graphics, but they do tell us a lot about these new phones. In particular, the Samsung Wide Fold looks significantly wider than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, which looks really skinny in comparison.

The designs are in line with previous leaks, renders, and mockups, including the dummy units that surfaced in late April.

Samsung's Wide Fold is widely (no pun intended) expected to clash with Apple's rumored, upcoming foldable iPhone, which will likely have a similar, wide design. This design might make the phone feel a little clunkier in the hand, but should pay off when you unfold it, as you'll get something akin to a small tablet.

As for the Galaxy Z Fold 8, it looks more or less unchanged compared to its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

The rumored specs for the Samsung Wide Fold include a dual, 200/50-megapixel camera, a 10-megapixel selfie camera, a 5.4-inch cover display, a 7.6-inch foldable display, a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chip, and 12/16GB of RAM.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 will probably have similar specs as the Z Fold 7, but it should get a larger, 5,000mAh battery, as well as 45W charging.

Samsung is likely to unveil its new foldable phones in July.

Is The Drama worth watching?

A24's The Drama has drawn in moviegoers around the globe, crossing the $100 million mark. It's only the studio's fifth film to ever hit the century mark in over a dozen years. So far, it's earned a 77 percent critic and 78 percent audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which means people aren't just showing up for the film — they're actually enjoying it.

That being said, The Drama dabbles in some heavy themes and uncomfortable emotions, so it's certainly not for everyone. Whether it's worth a watch is debatable, as always, but one should certainly check trigger warnings before going in.

Xfinity Internet and TV customers can also get in on the bundle action with Xfinity StreamSaver packages. The package with Netflix Standard with ads ($8.99 per month), Peacock Premium ($10.99 per month), and HBO Max Basic with Ads ($10.99 per month) can be added to your existing Xfinity service for only $22 per month. It typically costs $30.97 for all three, so you'll save about $8.97 monthly.

Earlier this year, I found the Google Pixel 10a somewhat disappointing compared to previous Pixel A-series devices. Google's mid-range phone is almost always one of (if not the) best in the category every year, but the Pixel 10a felt compromised due to a lack of AI feature parity with the flagship Pixel phones and other noteworthy improvements.

Now, Google can rest easy because the Pixel 10a looks a good deal better now that the Samsung Galaxy A57 5G is here. The higher-end of two mid-range devices announced in late March, the A57 purports to bring a premium feel at a relatively modest $549 starting price. In some respects, it accomplishes this; the display is nice, and performance in most circumstances isn't bad.

However, in other respects, the A57 falls short not just of feeling like a premium device, but of competing with other mid-range devices, too. If you're an Android fan, you'd be better off with a Pixel 10a, which is $50 cheaper. If you're platform-agnostic, the $599 iPhone 17e is certainly worth the extra cash. And if you want something with a bit more personality, grab the new Nothing Phone (4a) Pro, only $499.

The A57 5G isn't an outright failure, but it doesn't provide many reasons to consider it over the competition.

Samsung Galaxy A57 5G: Price and specs

As mentioned above, the A57 starts at $549. That's $50 more than the Pixel 10a and $50 cheaper than the iPhone 17e. Here are the basic specs:

• 6.7-inch Super AMOLED display with up to 120Hz refresh rate

• Exynos 1680 chipset

• 6GB or 8GB RAM

• 128GB or 256GB storage

• 5,000mAh battery

• Three rear cameras: 50MP wide, 8MP ultrawide, 5MP macro

• 12MP selfie camera

The display is more or less unchanged from last year's Galaxy A56 device, which is fine. A big, 6.7-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate is about as good as you can ask for from a phone in the $500 range, and it looks crisp, clear, and smooth in my experience. Those RAM and storage numbers are also pretty competitive in the category, though I should mention that the phone hits a price of $609 if you want 256GB of storage. At that point, you should probably just get an iPhone 17e.

One other point of interest is the processor. Rather than a top-end Snapdragon processor like you'd find in a Galaxy S26 Ultra, you get the less powerful Exynos 1680 instead. This comes with all sorts of compromises that we'll get into shortly. This is pretty disappointing compared to the Pixel 10a and iPhone 17e, which come with Google's Tensor G4 and Apple's A19 chips, respectively. While the Tensor G4 is not the same chip powering the regular Pixel 10, the A19 is what's inside a regular iPhone 17. Samsung's mid-range phone represents a larger step down, by comparison.

One last note: The A57 only comes in one color, called "Awesome Navy." I think it's pretty boring! There isn't really much else about its design that stands out to me. The vertical ringed housing for the three rear cameras looks a little generic, and like other phones of its size, I find it a little unwieldy to use with one hand. It's nice and light, though, and not too thick.

It's to be expected that a mid-range device would not have access to all the same fancy software features as its more expensive brethren, but the A57 5G goes a little too far in this direction.

It runs Android 16 via One UI 8.5, like other current Samsung phones, but it's missing many of the more advanced AI features that you'd get on something like a Galaxy S26. Rather than harnessing the power of Galaxy AI, the A57 gets a more limited suite of features called "Awesome Intelligence." Like the phone's "awesome navy" color, the AI tools don't really earn that adjective.

You get a basic object eraser for photos, voice transcription for audio and phone call recordings, and other already existing basic AI features from other Samsung devices, like Best Face for group photos and Circle to Search. Of course, you can also talk to Gemini if you want.

That's not nothing, but it's a far cry from what's available on a Galaxy S26, software-wise. There's no AI image generation, and you can't use the object eraser to move objects around in a photo. On the non-AI front, it's also missing the privacy display feature from the Galaxy S26 Ultra, though that's not necessarily a surprise. Overall, this is a pretty middling set of AI features that's made worse by spotty performance.

Performance on the A57 is a bit strange. On one hand, basic, everyday activities like scrolling through social media, watching YouTube videos, or sending messages work fine. Apps load quickly, and the phone never felt overloaded from too much multitasking in my time with it.

On the other hand, some basic performance features leave a lot to be desired. For instance, facial recognition for unlocking the phone is painfully inconsistent. Sometimes it works perfectly, opening the phone as soon as it sees your face. Most of the time, though, it either takes around four seconds to recognize you or simply fails to recognize you at all. This is a pretty maddening thing for a phone to get wrong in 2026.

I also had some issues getting the limited set of AI features to work properly. In particular, the object eraser simply would not work for me. I'd show it a simple photo of a beverage can on a table, tap the can, and then the phone would do nothing for minutes at a time. In my testing, I never actually got it to remove anything from a photo. I'm open to the possibility that I'm just missing something here and that other people won't encounter this, but I can only speak to what I experienced.

Another big problem I encountered was a spotty WiFi chip in the phone. This won't affect all or even most users, since my home's WiFi network is a bit awkward. To be specific, my bedroom is about three walls away from the router, meaning signal strength in here can be iffy.

In my testing, the A57 would very frequently lose WiFi signal in this room, to the point that it wouldn't or couldn't fall back to cellular data, leaving me effectively disconnected from the internet. The only way to fix this was to manually turn off WiFi and turn it on again, which would inevitably lead to the same thing happening a few minutes later. Cellular 5G signal was literally more reliable in my bedroom than WiFi.

Again, my network environment isn't ideal, but I live in this room. I use several WiFi-connected devices in it every day, and I have never once encountered this behavior on another device.

Samsung Galaxy A57 5G: Cameras

As stated above, you get a 50MP main lens, an 8MP ultrawide lens, and a 5MP macro lens on the back, with a 12MP selfie camera. It's best not to expect too much from cameras on a mid-range device, but I will say that this is another area where the Pixel 10a is a better value.

Under normal circumstances, though, it does take pretty decent daytime photos. Objects are crisp, colors are vivid, and everything looks about how it should, at least to my eyes.

Like I said, you shouldn't expect too much from a mid-range set of cameras, but even so, there are better options in this price range.

Samsung Galaxy A57 5G: Battery life

One area where I can't find much at fault with the A57 is battery life. I was able to wring about 24 hours of solid use out of it on a single charge, which isn't remarkable, but is right in line with what I'd want or expect out of a phone at this price point in 2026. You can probably extend that by a few hours if you're really careful, too.

In case I haven't already made this abundantly clear, I don't think the Samsung Galaxy A57 5G is worth much consideration if you're in the market for a mid-range device. If you like Android, get a Pixel 10a. If you like iOS or don't care, consider an iPhone 17e.

Between janky software performance, missing AI features, and a middling camera array, this device is pretty hard to recommend. It's possible this phone is another victim of the ongoing memory crisis, with Samsung sacrificing features to offset higher RAM costs. Regardless, you could probably do worse, but you can definitely do better.

In April, Instagram removed sex toy shop Bellesa's account — and it appears to be part of a pattern of Meta removing posts and accounts that have to do with sex and LGBTQ issues, advocates warn.

Nonprofit Repro Uncensored told Mashable that last month it received over 130 reports on its website about social media platforms censoring accounts. In this context, "censored" includes account removal, post removal, or shadowbanning, in which a platform deprioritizes an account (such as not showing it in Search or Explore). 

The vast majority of these reports were about Instagram.

Repro Uncensored's executive director, Martha Dimitratou, confirmed to Mashable that the organization has received more reports in April 2026 than in any other month since it began collecting reports in early 2024. 

What's happening on Instagram?

The influx of reports is partly because people are now more aware of Repro Uncensored's project to monitor and track digital censorship and how to report it, Dimitratou said. But generally, there have been a lot of cases recently; at least five or six reports a day, she added.

Instagram banning or shadowbanning sex workers, sex educators, LGBTQ accounts, and others isn't exactly new. After the twin laws FOSTA/SESTA were passed in 2018, major social platforms began cracking down on sexual content — or content perceived as sexual — even more than previously. 

FOSTA/SESTA states that online platforms are liable for user content that enables sex trafficking or solicits prostitution. While supporters of FOSTA/SESTA claimed it would fight online sex trafficking, the reality is that there's one reported federal prosecution because of it (as of 2021, there doesn't appear to be another report since). 

Instead, platforms overcorrected and began wiping sexual content in general, including non-soliciting discussions of sex, sex education, and sexual expression. Due to sex workers and sex-adjacent accounts getting wiped from online spaces, the humans behind them are less safe, according to two studies, one from the Fordham Law Review and the other from the Anti Sex Trafficking Review.

While FOSTA/SESTA has been the law for about eight years now, Instagram's crackdown is intensifying, according to Repro Uncensored and others. Last year, porn performer Siri Dahl told Mashable she was on her eighth Instagram account, and the platform was getting more strict. OnlyFans model Lily Phillips's Instagram account was taken down in early May, and she told Mashable that she noticed fellow performers had their accounts taken down as well. 

A 2025 study by the Center for Intimacy Justice titled The Digital Gag found that of the sexual and reproductive health groups studied, 63 percent had organic content (not ads) removed from Meta platforms, and 84 percent of businesses and 76 percent of nonprofits had ads rejected by Meta.

Meta didn't respond to a question about whether it is removing more accounts now than in the past.

"It's very unfortunate," said Dimitratou of the account removals, "it's something we need to think of critically as a society." This is happening globally, she said, including the U.S. and Europe. These are "supposed to be places that are respectful of human rights and freedom of speech and freedom of expression," she said, "and presumably care about reproductive health and other issues."

Meta's policy response

Just weeks ago, head of Instagram Adam Mosseri told The Mirror why OnlyFans creators are getting booted off the platform: "They're promoting explicit content…You can't promote, you can't solicit, so you can certainly be on Instagram, but obviously, we have very clear rules about what is and what is not allowed on the platform."

In terms of Meta's rules, its rationale for adult sexual solicitation and sexually explicit language policy states:

"People use our services to discuss and draw attention to sexual violence and exploitation. We recognize the importance of and allow for this discussion. We also allow for the discussion of sex worker rights advocacy and sex work regulation. However, we draw the line…when content facilitates sexual encounters or commercial sexual services between adults or when content asks for or offers pornographic or sexual content. We do this to avoid facilitating transactions that may involve trafficking, coercion and non-consensual sexual acts."

A Meta spokesperson told Mashable, "Every organization and individual on our platforms is subject to the same set of rules, and any claims of enforcement based on group affiliation or advocacy are baseless. We also give people the opportunity to appeal decisions if they think we've got it wrong."

Meta also told Mashable that it's been clear it wants to allow more speech and reduce enforcement mistakes, and that it's committed to doing so.

A viral post shared by Repro Uncensored and the @feminist Instagram account included the handles of 51 accounts that reported censorship from Instagram. Meta told Mashable that of the 51, one was Bellesa (which Meta claims was correctly removed for multiple violations), three handles didn't exist, and the majority of the remaining accounts are fully active.

Some of the accounts and content were disabled in error and have been reinstated; others were correctly enforced, Meta said. 

Meta stated that it, of course, sometimes makes mistakes, but since some instances included content on the borderline of its policies, it's understandable that its systems flagged them.

Given the reinstatements, Dimitratou said it's concerning that Repro Uncensored has to run campaigns both digitally and in the press to gain attention and get accounts reinstated.

"We want citizens from any country to be able, on their own, to use the tools and mechanisms that are supposed to have been set in place to reinstate their accounts," she said. Often, account holders go through the standard appeals processes but don't get answers. 

Repro Uncensored is calling for improved appeals processes, as well as more transparent, accountable content moderation systems. Dimitratou says the group believes AI moderation often fails to account for context, particularly in discussions of women’s health and queer issues, and instead flags content based on keywords alone.

She also noted that coordinated reporting by bad actors, such as anti-rights groups, may play a role in account removals.

And the stakes of this kind of moderation extend beyond social media visibility. For activists and educators, losing access to platforms can directly affect how people find critical health information. Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, conservatives have been pushing to limit abortion access in the states. (As of May 4, the Supreme Court has restored access to the mail-order abortion pill.) 

"Access to reproductive health and abortion has been dramatically, even more so, under threat," she said. "There is a larger picture of how [our] rights are very much being threatened, and so censorship is the battleground of how a lot of this information is being accessed."

So these aren't isolated incidents, nor is it merely about posting online. According to Dimitratou, it's about the foundation of how we communicate, share information, and access healthcare.

However, the Met Gala fashion wasn't the only thing turning heads on Monday. Bezos' involvement drew significant attention to this year's gala, provoking considerable criticism beyond the traditional fashion commentary. The Met Gala has previously come under fire for revelling in ostentatious opulence while the rest of the world burns, drawing comparisons to the severe class divide in dystopic YA novel The Hunger Games. 

Now that the fourth richest man in the world has reportedly dropped $10 million to sponsor the event, the vibes for the 2026 Met Gala were even more off than usual.

Bezos' Met Gala met with pee bottle protest

Bezos' decision to bypass the Met Gala's famous red carpet may have been informed by the loud backlash to his involvement in the event. On Friday, activist group Everyone Hates Elon left approximately 300 bottles of fake urine inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a reference to allegations that Amazon workers have been forced to pee in bottles to keep on schedule amidst gruelling working conditions.

"Jeff Bezos's company Amazon is literally being sued for forcing workers to urinate in bottles," the group said in a statement posted to Instagram. The protestors partook in their own guerilla installation art outside the museum as well, attaching a basket of empty plastic bottles to a lamppost alongside a sign encouraging people to use them as toilets.

"Met Gala VIP toilet," read the sign. "Installed in honor of Met Gala chair Jeff Bezos. Go ahead, it's good enough for his staff."

Even so, few invitees publicly bowed out of the event, much less cited Bezos as the reason. While some former Met Gala attendees were absent this year, this could be due to any number of reasons other than protest, such as not being invited, having a clash in their schedule, or simply because they didn't feel up to it.

However, previous attendee Taraji P. Henson did explicitly express her distaste for Bezos' involvement in the Met Gala, sharing a post on her Instagram Story juxtaposing the billionaire's wealth with poor working conditions in Amazon warehouses. 

Forbes reports that former gala guests Bella Hadid and Cara Delevingne also liked an Instagram Reel from creator Meredith Lynch, in which she called out celebrities planning to attend this year's gala after also protesting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Despite this, Delevingne attended anyway, co-hosting the official livestream.

"If you are a celebrity and you attend the Met Gala and you wear the ICE Out pin, please note that I will be dragging you in perpetuity," said Lynch. 

"You cannot wear the ICE Out pin to the Jeff Bezos-backed Met Gala. Jeff Bezos is part of the reason we're in this fucking mess… I know that the funds from the Met Gala go to a good cause in that the Met is a wonderful institution in New York city. But it is wild to me that this event is sponsored by Jeff Bezos, who has backed Trump, who has slashed arts funding."

Sarah Paulson attended the Met Gala as well, wearing a Matières Fécales ballgown with a leather mask designed to look like a one-dollar bill. According to the designer, the collection was "a reflection of the greed and corruption that comes with extreme power." However, Paulson's apparent dig at the ultra wealthy received mixed reactions on social media, with some finding it tone-deaf in light of the context.

One notable person who skipped the Met Gala was New York's favourite mayor Zohran Mamdani. While his predecessors traditionally attended the event, Mamdani told Hell Gate in April that he wanted to keep focusing on his work to make the city affordable. His office also released a spotlight of New York fashion industry workers timed to coincide with the Met Gala, focusing on celebrating the people behind the scenes.

The mayor didn't explicitly state that the Met Gala's association with a tech billionaire accused of exploiting his workers weighed into his decision. However, a source told Page Six that though Mamdani had been invited, the event "goes against everything he believes in."

The conditions you have to meet are specific to the color-coded spaces. For example, if it provides a single number, every side of a tile in that space must add up to the number provided. It is possible — and common — for only half a tile to be within a color-coded space.

Here are common examples you'll run into across the difficulty levels:

• Number: All the pips in this space must add up to the number.

• Equal: Every domino half in this space must be the same number of pips.

• Not Equal: Every domino half in this space must have a completely different number of pips.

• Less than: Every domino half in this space must add up to less than the number.

• Greater than: Every domino half in this space must add up to more than the number.

If an area does not have any color coding, it means there are no conditions on the portions of dominoes within those spaces.

White House officials are exploring official government oversight of new AI models, according to the New York Times.

U.S. officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told the publication that the Trump administration is forming an AI working group composed of tech leaders and government representatives. The group will be tasked with outlining potential oversight procedures for new models launching to market, including formal review processes, the Times reported.

The proposed plans were discussed at a White House meeting last week with representatives from Anthropic, Google, and OpenAI.

Potentially influenced by regulatory processes announced by UK regulators, which relegate AI oversight to relevant government bodies, the working group would also determine which U.S. agencies would be tasked with oversight. Some officials have suggested the National Security Agency (NSA), the White House Office of the National Cyber Director, and the director of national intelligence take the lead, while others have even suggested revitalizing the Biden-era Center for A.I. Standards and Innovation, according to the Times.

The administration has reversed its stance on AI regulation in recent months, despite announcing a federal AI action plan that pulled back on regulation of tech companies and threatened to reduce federal funding for states that impeded AI infrastructure efforts through regulation. Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill also included limits on state governments' AI regulation, originally proposing a 10-year moratorium on state action in favor of federal oversight.

Trump appointee and FCC chairman Brendan Carr has also advocated for a light-touch approach to AI regulation.

Spirit Airlines is officially out of business. The budget airline carrier ceased operations on May 2, 2026 due to financial troubles. The company has now begun winding down after filing for bankruptcy twice and failing to secure a government bailout.

If you're a Spirit Airlines customer, you may be asking yourself: "I booked a flight with Spirit…what do I do now?"

Here's how to get your refund or book your flight with a different airline.

Spirit Airlines refunds

According to Spirit Airlines, anyone who booked tickets for an upcoming flight will automatically receive a refund to the credit card or debit card they used to make their purchase. 

Spirit's official website, Spirit.com, now forwards to a new URL, spiritrestructuring.com. However, existing customers can still login to their account at https://www.spirit.com/my-trips/find-trip in order to view the status of their refund.

Customers who booked a Spirit flight through a travel agent must contact their agent for a refund.

It's currently unclear how Spirit will handle any vouchers, credits, or points used to book flights.

Book a 'rescue fare' flight

Finding out that your Spirit Airlines flight home in the middle of your trip has been canceled because the company is no longer operating is certainly not a fun experience.

However, many airlines are trying to make things simple for travelers so they aren't left stranded. Airline carriers like American Airlines, Delta, Frontier Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines are all offering "rescue fares" or discount flight tickets for Spirit customers.

For example, JetBlue is offering discounted $99 one-way flights for anyone with a valid itinerary through May 6. Some airlines, however, are offering these discounts only to traveling Spirit customers who show up in person at the ticket booth during their trip.

Companies like Allegiant, American Airlines, Delta, and Frontier are also temporarily offering reduced fares on routes that Spirit once flew.

At this point, most home robots are either glorified vacuums or far-off concepts that may never become commercially available. However, we just got a look at a new home companion robot potentially coming to market next year, and its inventor has a proven track record of putting robots into homes.

Colin Angle, co-founder of Roomba maker iRobot, fully unveiled his new company Familiar Machines & Magic at the Wall Street Journal's The Future of Everything event this week.

FM&M's goal is to make home robots that act more as emotional companions than chore machines. Its debut product is an unnamed four-legged robot companion. The robot looks like a cross between a dog and a bear, and it's designed to spark a connection with its human owner.

"The next era of robotics is not just about dexterity or humanoid form — it's about machines that can build and sustain human connection," Angle said, per an official press release.

The companion bot probably won't launch until next year at the earliest, and we don't have a price point yet, but it's still quite fascinating to look at. In addition to its Roomba pedigree, a Familiar Machines & Magic press release states that the company's employees have also worked with Disney Research, MIT, Amazon, Boston Dynamics, Bose, and Sonos.

The robot animal has 23 degrees of freedom and can move its head, ears, and eyes.

According to The Verge, it can't grasp objects or climb stairs, which would severely limit its usefulness, if it existed to be useful, anyway. It uses on-device generative AI to learn about its owner and respond to the owner's needs on an emotional level.

One very important detail is that it doesn't speak, instead purring and making other pet-like noises. A pet seems to be the best point of comparison here, as the robot seems almost totally incapable of performing practical tasks, and instead exists to make people feel less lonely.

Some other crucial points include a touch-sensitive coat that should, in theory, be pleasurable to pet, and onboard cameras and microphones that help the robot react to situations without streaming that audio or video anywhere. It doesn't have to connect to the internet to work.

The idea of using AI to cure the loneliness epidemic isn't necessarily new or without merit, even if it can sometimes feel a bit dystopian.

Last year, Mashable reported on a service that allowed the elderly to talk to an AI over the phone, just for the sake of providing company. Multiple companies are creating AI-powered robot companions for elder care applications, including startups like ElliQ and Abi.

Anthropomorphizing robots and artificial intelligence can be dangerous, especially given what we know about AI psychosis. However, some experts believe that companion robots could prove beneficial in specific settings.

It's not often that we get a good Apple deal on a non-big-sale day (e.g., Prime Day), but yesterday Amazon dropped the Apple iPad Air 11-inch (M4) to an all-time low of $519.99. That's a 13% discount, or an extra $79.01 in your pocket.

A 19-year-old University of Tennessee freshman is suing the makers of a social matchmaking app after the company allegedly lifted a video from her TikTok page and used it — without her knowledge or consent — in an advertisement suggesting she was looking for casual sexual encounters. The company then supposedly targeted that ad at men living in her own dormitory.

Kaelyn Lunglhofer filed the lawsuit on April 28 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee against Quantum Communications Development Limited, a British Virgin Islands-based company, and its Chinese affiliates. The defendants own and operate a social media and messaging app called Meete. Per the lawsuit, Meete claims to have 17 million users worldwide.

According to the complaint, Lunglhofer posted a video to her public TikTok account on May 31, 2025 — the day of her high school graduation — showing off an orange outfit from her bedroom while music played in the background. Defendants allegedly pulled a 10-second clip from that video and used it as the backdrop for a Meete advertisement that ran on social media platforms like Snapchat.

The ad, per the complaint, featured female narration stating, "Are you looking for a friend with benefits? This app shows you women around you who are looking for some fun. You can video chat with them." Lunglhofer's face was on screen, and the Meete logo was prominently displayed.

According to the suit, Meete allegedly used geolocation technology to serve the ad specifically to male users within the Knoxville, Tennessee area. This includes men living on other floors of her on-campus dormitory building. Lunglhofer found out about the ad because one of the male residents in her dorm alerted her to it, she said in an interview with local ABC affiliate, WKRN.

The suit brings claims under the federal Lanham Act (which addresses businesses' use of misleading claims), Tennessee's right of publicity statute — known as the ELVIS Act — and Tennessee common law defamation. Lunglhofer is seeking compensatory damages of $750,000, disgorgement of Meete's profits tied to the ad campaign, and punitive damages. She is also seeking to have the ad removed entirely.

Mashable reached out to Meete but did not receive a response in time for publication. The firm representing Lunglhofer also did not yet respond to a request for comment.

GameStop, a chain of physical video game and merchandise stores, is also well known for achieving legendary status among meme stocks. Now, the games retailer is looking to buy eBay in a surprise acquisition.

The company announced its intention to purchase the e-commerce giant at $125 per stock, a 46 percent premium to eBay's closing stock price on Feb. 4, 2026. The deal values eBay at approximately $55.5 billion, which will make everyone ask the same question: Where will GameStop, whose own market cap is roughly $11.8 billion, get that kind of money?

To understand this, we need to take a step back. Once a giant with more than 6,000 stores globally, GameStop started declining in the 2010s as folks started getting their games predominantly from the internet. This made it one of the most shorted stocks ever, with investors betting its value would plummet further as its business continues to decline.

In 2021, however, GameStop was revived by a Reddit community of traders who started buying the stock en masse, driving short sellers out and pumping GameStop's stock to new all-time highs. The stock price has since declined, and the business still faces serious headwinds, but the company pivoted to collectibles and digital assets, as well as a Bitcoin treasury strategy.

Now, GameStop has about $9.4 billion of cash and liquid investments on its balance sheet, as well as third-party financing that goes up to $20 billion. That should be good enough, GameStop claims, for half the offer; the other half will come from GameStop common stock. Finally, GameStop has quietly been buying eBay shares, and it already owns a 5 percent stake in the company.

GameStop plans to improve eBay's business, which has been doing better on its own lately, with a combination of cost-cutting measures. GameStop will also leverage its remaining retail locations to "give eBay a national network for authentication, intake, fulfillment, and live commerce."

ShinyHunters have struck once again. This time, the hacker group says it has breached systems belonging to one of the biggest educational tech companies.

Edtech giant Instructure, the company behind the popular Learning Management System (LMS) Canvas, announced that it was experiencing a service disruption on April 30. 

The next day, on May 1, the company confirmed that it experienced a "cybersecurity incident perpetrated by a criminal threat actor." 

Instructure largely addressed the issues by May 2 and shared that it would continue to monitor its platforms and investigate how the cyberattack occurred. The company said it patched its security system, revoked certain credentials and access tokens, and rotated API keys "out of an abundance of caution."

ShinyHunters, the now-infamous hacking collective known for social engineering and ransomware, claimed responsibility and uploaded 3.65 terabytes of related stolen data to its website on May 3, as reported by SecurityWeek.

What data was stolen?

Instructure says that passwords and other private credentials were not stolen in the breach. 

However, the affected data reportedly includes users' names, email addresses, student IDs, and private messages exchanged on the platform.

According to ShinyHunters, the stolen data is associated with 275 million users at nearly 9,000 schools around the world. These users include students, teachers, and staff.

ShinyHunters also claimed that billions of private messages between users, including students and teachers, were stolen as well, according to Bleeping Computer. The group says Instructure's Salesforce instance was also breached, and related data was stolen.

ShinyHunters have been involved with several high-profile data breaches recently. Companies ranging from the bakery chain Panera Bread to the security firm ADT have all experienced data breaches tied to the group. Anime streaming service Crunchyroll and the dating app Bumble have been breached by ShinyHunters as well.

Last month, ShinyHunters were also behind the breach into Rockstar Games, the video game developer behind the GTA series, including the long-awaited Grand Theft Auto VI.

All of these ShinyHunters data breaches have occurred since the beginning of the year.

The lawsuit, filed in 2021, alleged that Sony cut off third-party retailers from selling game-specific download vouchers starting April 1, 2019, effectively funneling consumers to the PlayStation Store and driving up prices in violation of federal antitrust law. Sony has denied any wrongdoing.

U.S. District Judge Araceli Martínez-Olguín granted preliminary approval to the deal on April 8, after previously rejecting two earlier versions of the settlement — first over concerns about service awards for plaintiffs who were no longer part of the class, and again over questions about whether PlayStation Store credits amounted to coupons under the law.

The settlement covers U.S. consumers who bought eligible PlayStation games through the PlayStation Store for which a retail voucher existed before April 1, 2019, and for which prices increased by at least 50 cents over a set period. More than 4.4 million people are covered under the deal.

How to collect

For most class members, getting paid requires no action at all. Those with active PlayStation Network accounts will automatically receive credits redeemable in the PlayStation Store. Players with deactivated accounts, however, must contact the settlement administrator to request a paper check — and that deadline is Aug. 27, 2026.

Anyone who wants to opt out of the settlement and preserve their right to sue separately must submit an exclusion request by July 2, 2026.

The court is scheduled to hold a final approval hearing on Oct. 15, 2026. Compensation won't be distributed until after that approval is granted and any appeals are resolved. Plaintiffs' attorneys are seeking up to one-third of the settlement fund in fees.

Samsung foldables just can't stop leaking before they're announced.

This time, it's the rumored follow-up to last year's Galaxy Z Flip 7. A report by Korean leaker Lanzuk included a few hints about what to expect from the device, which has so far been out of the spotlight a bit compared to the rumored Z Fold 8 and a new "Wide Fold" device.

According to this new leak, you can expect a Z Flip 8 that's a little bit wider than before, as well as one that has shed some weight, coming in at approximately 180 grams, compared to 188 grams a year ago.

On top of that, the report hints at a new hinge mechanism, though it doesn't go into any detail about what it might be. Perhaps most excitingly is the indication that the Z Flip 8 will have a true crease-free display. Highly visible creases were a big problem for foldables as they became a relevant market category, but over the years, that's become less and less of an issue. If the Z Flip 8 can make further improvements on that, then that's great.

Samsung is widely expected to announce the Z Flip 8, the Z Fold 8, and the Wide Fold at an event this summer, most likely in July.

We think the Z Fold 8 will look pretty similar to last year's model overall, while the Wide Fold will be another book-style foldable that's, well, wider than the Fold 8. It's expected to have a similar size and shape to the also-unannounced iPhone Fold, expected to launch later this year.

Andy Serkis isn't done with Middle-earth just yet.

The upcoming prequel film The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum sees Serkis pulling double duty — more so than he already does in the dual part of Gollum/Sméagol. On top of reprising that iconic role, he's also stepping into the director's chair, making him the only person aside from Peter Jackson to helm a live-action Lord of the Rings movie.

Before The Hunt for Gollum's production gets underway in New Zealand, Serkis spoke with Mashable Entertainment Reporter Belen Edwards about what viewers could expect from the film.

"The joy of [The Hunt for Gollum] is that it's entirely its own story, but it fits perfectly into the lore, the tone, the feel of the Middle-earth films that were created by Peter Jackson 25 years ago," Serkis said.

According to Serkis, the film "sits between The Hobbit trilogy and the Lord of the Rings." It will follow Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and Aragorn's (Jamie Dornan, replacing Viggo Mortensen) search for Gollum in the lead-up to the War of the Ring. J.R.R. Tolkien wrote about this hunt in The Fellowship of the Ring and the trilogy's Appendices, and Jackson's films briefly mention it.

The Hunt for Gollum is the latest step in Warner Bros. Pictures' expansion of their Middle-earth titles. 2025 saw the release of anime film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. Then, on March 25, Warner Bros. announced The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past (working title), a Lord of the Rings sequel written by Philippa Boyens, Tolkien superfan Stephen Colbert, and his son Peter McGee.

The deluge of Lord of the Rings titles might raise alarm bells about the dilution of a beloved franchise. For Serkis' part, this isn't the case with The Hunt for Gollum.

"The story, and therefore how we see the story, is different and unique to this particular tale," Serkis said. "It's not just a nostalgia film. We're seeing plenty of those, and laying heavily into the nostalgia and the things that we loved about those movies of 25 and 30 years ago. [The Hunt for Gollum] adheres to that world, but it certainly has a freshness and a newness in terms of the actual story."

The newness also extends to the cast. The Hunt for Gollum features the return of several familiar faces: Serkis, McKellen, Elijah Wood, and Lee Pace reprise their roles from the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies. However, the film also invites several newcomers into Middle-earth. Kate Winslet and Leo Woodall play Marigol and Halvard, two characters who aren't named in Tolkien's original novels or films, while Jamie Dornan takes over the role of Aragorn from Viggo Mortensen.

"We're calling him Strider in our movie. He is at a different point in his journey, so he is slightly different to the Aragorn that we see later on," Serkis explained. "It's a version of himself that's been out in the wilderness as a Dúnedain Ranger. I'll leave it at that for the moment, but Jamie is perfect for this part of the journey of the character."

Love them or hate them, the Kardashians are cultural drivers, and a new book releasing tomorrow dissects why.

Dekonstructing the Kardashians: A New Media Manifesto is written by psychotherapist MJ Corey, who runs the Instagram account, Kardashian Kolloquium. When she discovered the Kardashians while in grad school, Corey was so struck by their content and found it uncanny. Her sister told her to read postmodern theory, and Corey deep-dived into self-study and started documenting it online. Now, she has nearly 50,000 followers, helps run the Kardashian Data Koalition, and has become a premier Kardashian intellectual. 

"Kardashian intellectual" may sound like an oxymoron, but as Dekonstructing the Kardashians demonstrates, it's important for us to examine pop culture. There must be reasons why something is popular, after all. "I don't psychoanalyze the Kardashians, but if anything, they might hold a mirror to the rest of us," Corey said in an interview with Mashable. 

The Kardashians trace culture with their narratives, she said, and it actually began with sex work. 

The infamous sex tape

Cast your memory all the way back to 2007, when Kim Kardashian's sex tape with singer Ray J was leaked. Kim rose to fame, and Keeping Up With the Kardashians (KUWTK) premiered months later. 

There's a current legal battle between Kardashian and Ray J, which may shed new light on why the tape was made and how it was released. But regardless, whereas some may have been embarrassed and shied away from the public eye after such an invasion of privacy, Kim did the opposite. She refused to be ashamed. 

"Why did you make a sex tape?" Kim's sister, Kourtney, asked in the very first episode of KUWTK ahead of an upcoming talk show appearance. 

"Because I was horny and I felt like it," Kim said.

A reason why people are angry at the Kardashians is that they made money from the tape instead of living in shame or disassociating from it, Corey said. 

"People have a different feeling towards female icons that are tragic or humiliated than the ones that are like, 'No, I'm good, I'm gonna make money from it,'" Corey said. "It's another nuance that people have been forced to sit with when it comes to the Kardashians and their relationship to sex — that the tape didn't break them."

And the sex tape was far from the only time the Kardashians associated themselves with sex — and sex work — especially in the early years of their fame. In the first season of KUWTK alone, members of the family: played on a stripper pole, hired a porn performer to babysit the Jenner sisters, participated in a Girls Gone Wild photoshoot, and also shot photos for Playboy. 

When we break down the story of the Kardashians intellectually, Corey said, we look at cultural appropriation of race and ethnicity. But in the beginning, they appropriated sex work, as well. Corey spoke with a sex worker who wanted to remain anonymous, who believed Kim is a sex worker, though Kim would never call it that. In Kim's time in the spotlight, she's stigmatized the profession while fully idealizing, glamorizing, and profiting from sex workers' aesthetics, Corey said.

When researching for this book, "it was impossible to ignore this middle-class woman's fascination with sex work," she said of Kim in the early days of KUWTK.

Kim Kardashian and OnlyFans

Kim K isn't on OnlyFans, but there is a connection between the two. As Corey writes in Dekonstructing the Kardashians: 

"Sexual accessibility is, apparently, most alluring when there's a sense that no woman is profiting from it, which is probably at least one reason why the Kardashians…became more reviled the richer they got, and also why people would one day rag on the sex industry social media website OnlyFans, which came out in 2016 in the thick of Kardashian-driven influencer culture and offered a space for many sex workers to own the means of their production."

There's a larger discourse beyond the Kardashians around OnlyFans, its place in culture, and its influence on women and how they view and potentially commodify their bodies. "I've just noticed in the larger discourse, [shaming] of women who are entrepreneurial on their OnlyFans accounts. There's a similar shaming that people throw at the Kardashians sometimes for making money on their sexuality." 

"And I think that it's threatening to see that women can be independent from men," Corey added.

The difference between Kim Kardashian and the typical OnlyFans model, however, is fame, money, and access. Kim K seemingly gets a pass to post whatever she wants; this is a complaint sex workers and other sex-adjacent Instagram users have told Mashable in recent years. While Kim is boosted in our algorithms, non-famous people are shadowbanned — deprioritized — if not banned entirely. 

How the Kardashians won culture

The influence of the Kar-Jenners is undeniable, and in her book, Corey follows the lineage between a variety of American icons — like the Disney brand and Marilyn Monroe — and what they have in common with the family.

Every icon she references in the book typically evokes anxiety about race, death, or sex. This is even true of Mickey Mouse, who has, for example, sparked conversations about how the Disney mascot is racially coded.

"The Kardashians, in a really high-scale way, and in a way that will ensure their legacy, evoke all of these anxieties that all the other icons that came before also have," Corey said. "It just tells us that there's something about us that craves, that is drawn to it, is agitated by it, and that's why they also are so popular, because they play these things out for us at such scale, so relentlessly."

Because there are so many Kar-Jenners, the machine never stops, Corey continued. The family has become figures of catharsis, or release. There are touchpoints, like the SKIMS pubic hair underwear release last fall, that allow us to ask: How do we feel about that?

We're really trying to figure out what kind of society we want to live in, Corey said, and the Kardashians offer us opportunities to chew on and try to sort it out. Everything they do, at this point, conjures up some discourse — so much so that Corey already wants to write another book.

When The Audacity star Sarah Goldberg first met with series creator Jonathan Glatzer, he summed up the show in an unexpected fashion: The real-life tech titans whom The Audacity skewers are so focused on creating immortality that they can't face the fact that everyone — including them — has, at some point in their lives, pooped their pants.

That juxtaposition — a "denial of our base humanity," as Goldberg described it in a Zoom call with Mashable — attracted her to The Audacity's warped take on Silicon Valley.

In The Audacity's ensemble of tech founders, Goldberg's Dr. JoAnne Felder is the odd person out. She's a therapist to the Valley's "billionaire man-children," a renter in a sea of obscenely wealthy homeowners who don't care if their Napa house burns down, because they have several other homes to run back to.

Due to her outsider status, you might think JoAnne would serve as The Audacity's voice of reason. But by the end of the show's first episode, it's clear she's willing to bend the rules for personal gain just as much as her clients. One of them, Hypergnosis CEO Duncan Park (Billy Magnussen), learns she uses confidential client information to conduct insider trading.

"In this completely morally bankrupt world that JoAnne finds herself in, she feels like her tiny little transgressions are harmless, or even justified," Goldberg said.

Coming into The Audacity, Goldberg wanted a "big departure" from her Emmy–nominated role as Barry's struggling actor Sally Reed. When she first read for Sally, she felt she knew that character right away. For JoAnne, Goldberg was more drawn to her rhythm, an element that usually pulls her towards roles.

In her professional life, JoAnne's rhythm is slow and intentional. Goldberg describes her using silence "as a tool," wielding it to create space so her clients can open up... and give her valuable information information in the process.

"I didn't feel huge pressure to do major research and become this really qualified therapist, because that ship has sailed for JoAnne," Goldberg laughed. "It's sunk!"

Rhythm-wise, JoAnne's personal life is another story. As she weathers blackmail from Duncan, the possibility of losing her home, and her thorny relationship with son Orson (Everett Blunck), she grows more erratic. She drives off the road, snaps at every inconvenience (many self-inflicted), and browses the web for guns during session with clients. She's a picture of volatility, her blunt bob swaying with each panicked snap.

"It's a real cheat, but honestly, the hair really helped me. I found myself gesticulating a lot, and there's this staccato quality to her that was born out of the hair," Goldberg said. "[Key Hair Stylist] Sanna [Seppanen] told me, 'I'm gonna give you hair so great, you don't have to act.' She was not wrong."

While JoAnne differs wildly from Sally Reed, Barry fans may catch glimpses of her in JoAnne's increasingly nervous, occasionally explosive interactions with others. Like with Sally's decline, JoAnne is also a woman fraying at the edges.

"I love a frayer. I'm attracted to fraying people," Goldberg said.

She's also attracted to the dichotomy between The Audacity's characters' external and internal lives.

"So many people in this world are similar to Barry in some ways," she said. "They're living two lives, one with a very thick veneer to perform who they need to be in their business or job."

Goldberg continued: "I'm always interested in that duality. I'm interested in how we do it day to day. Why, when someone calls you, does your voice go high? Why do you speak one way when you're ordering your coffee, and then when you're in the doctor's office, it's different? I'm always fascinated by our external behaviors and what's going on underneath."

Goldberg is a self-described "technophobe." She has no apps and no social media, and she wasn't incredibly familiar with Silicon Valley prior to filming The Audacity. However, even before working on the show, she had been reading up on the rise of AI, especially how it pertains to the entertainment industry.

"I'm hoping that this doomsday feeling that was setting in is overblown. I don't know that it is," she said. "My hope I always hold on to is that television and film didn't kill theater, and I think that we're always going to crave a kind of connection and nuance that's not going to be available through AI."

The Audacity tackles AI through a storyline that JoAnne hasn't figured into much yet, one where Martin Phister (Simon Helberg) is essentially raising and nurturing an AI child. As the show goes on, he sees potential for it as a therapeutic tool that can do good, like when it listens to Deputy Under Secretary of Veterans' Affairs Tom Ruffage (Rob Corddry) about his wartime experiences.

"The AI aspect of the show is being developed with such purity and passion and focus. Seeing what happens if it falls into the wrong hands is where it all gets so frustrating," said Goldberg.

That frustration carries over to real life for Goldberg as well.

"I feel very resistant to it," she said. "My instincts as an animal are like, 'Where are we heading?' and it makes me quite uncomfortable. At the same time, I'm trying to keep a little bit of realism. We can't avoid the march of change, right? These things are happening, so how do we move forward productively?"

That's the question Glatzer, Goldberg, and The Audacity keep coming back to. What is the road map forward for humankind as it keeps dehumanizing itself? JoAnne, with her proximity to the reality-warping world of Silicon Valley, proves a perfect, if troubling case study.

Goldberg believes that JoAnne was once an idealist hoping to help her clients, but upon moving to Silicon Valley, she grew more "jaded and corrupted." Still, even in her early days as a therapist, she wasn't totally incorruptible.

"There was something in her that drew her to this world," Goldberg noted.

JoAnne's descent into corruption highlights Glatzer and The Audacity's central thesis about the future of humanity.

"What does it take to lose your humanity, and can you get it back?" asked Goldberg.

"There was an easier version of this show where [Glatzer] steps back, points the finger, and goes, 'Here's this small group of sociopaths who are making so much money doing terrible things,'" Goldberg said. "Actually, he chose the harder task of asking bigger questions about our moral compass as a species. What's innate in all of us? What creates this bad decision-making, and once you develop the tech that commodifies it, where does it go? He really gets down to the fact that these people didn't invent human behavior. They're exploiting and commodifying it, but the seeds are in all of us to, say, invade each other's privacy. He holds a mirror up to that in a way that I think is really brave."

New episodes of The Audacity are available to stream Sundays on AMC+, and air at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.

Everyone knows children are capable of savagery at the best of times, but Jack Thorne's Lord of the Flies — adapted from William Golding's famous 1954 novel — really ups the stakes.

The four-episode BBC miniseries, now streaming on Netflix, follows a group of British schoolchildren stranded on an island after a plane crash. Although they're semi-organised at first, the relationship between elected chief Ralph (Winston Sawyers) and lead hunter Jack (Lox Pratt) eventually breaks down, with things quickly escalating into violence.

But what happens at the end of the miniseries, what does it all mean, and how does it compare to the end of the novel? Let's unpack.

How does the Lord of the Flies show end?

In the final episode of Lord of the Flies, Ralph is outnumbered and in danger. Following the deaths of his allies Simon (Ike Talbut) and Piggy (David McKenna), the former chief spends the last part of episode 4 on the run from Jack and his tribe, who appear determined to hunt him to the death.

When Ralph hides out in the forest, the boys set a fire to try and smoke him out. Just as he's ready to give up, he encounters two actual adults who have landed on the beach in their small boat. They've seen the smoke and come to help.

One of the adults (Tom Goodman-Hill), not realising that Ralph was on the verge of being murdered, chastises him for not knowing how many boys there are on the island.

"I would have thought you could put on a better show than that," he barks, in peak cold British fashion.

"It was like that at first," Ralph responds. "Before things... we were together then."

"Let's get you boys out to the boat," says the man, leading Ralph away. In the background, the other kids put down their spears and slowly follow.

How does William Golding's book end?

The show is fairly faithful to the book. The novel also ends with the boys being rescued as Ralph is hunted, and there's a similar scene in which a naval officer chastises Ralph because he expects more from a group of British boys.

The book, like the TV show, ends with us knowing that the surviving boys are safe. What we don't know is what the consequences of their actions on the island will be, or what will happen to them when they get back home.

What does the ending of Lord of the Flies mean?

The reason we don't see what's next for the boys after they leave the island is, presumably, because it's not the main point of the story. Like the novel, Thorne's miniseries is really about how quickly society can break down when you remove its basic structures.

As Ralph says to the naval office at the end, "It was like that at first." But if Ralph and Piggy are representative of order, Jack's allure of chaos and savagery quickly proves too strong for the others to resist.

The naval office's reference to "British boys" and what he expects of them shows that he thinks Western society, in particular, is in some way too enlightened to devolve into violence. Lord of the Flies is a clear rejection of that idea.

How to play Pips

If you've ever played dominoes, you'll have a passing familiarity with how Pips is played. As we've shared in our previous hints stories for Pips, the tiles, like dominoes, are placed vertically or horizontally and connect with each other. The main difference between a traditional game of dominoes and Pips is the color-coded conditions you have to address. The touching tiles don't necessarily have to match.

The conditions you have to meet are specific to the color-coded spaces. For example, if it provides a single number, every side of a tile in that space must add up to the number provided. It is possible — and common — for only half a tile to be within a color-coded space.

Here are common examples you'll run into across the difficulty levels:

• Number: All the pips in this space must add up to the number.

• Equal: Every domino half in this space must be the same number of pips.

• Not Equal: Every domino half in this space must have a completely different number of pips.

• Less than: Every domino half in this space must add up to less than the number.

• Greater than: Every domino half in this space must add up to more than the number.

If an area does not have any color coding, it means there are no conditions on the portions of dominoes within those spaces.

According to NASA, the Moon takes roughly 29.5 days to circle Earth once, going through eight distinct phases in the process. Even though we always see the same side of the Moon, the amount of sunlight hitting it changes as it moves in its orbit. The shifting light creates the changing shapes we know as full, half, and crescent Moons. Altogether, there are eight main lunar phases.

New Moon - The Moon is between Earth and the sun, so the side we see is dark (in other words, it's invisible to the eye).

Waxing Crescent - A small sliver of light appears on the right side (Northern Hemisphere).

First Quarter - Half of the Moon is lit on the right side. It looks like a half-Moon.

Waxing Gibbous - More than half is lit up, but it’s not quite full yet.

Full Moon - The whole face of the Moon is illuminated and fully visible.

Waning Gibbous - The Moon starts losing light on the right side. (Northern Hemisphere)

Third Quarter (or Last Quarter) - Another half-Moon, but now the left side is lit.

AI companions are quietly becoming a staple across the industry, and OpenAI is now joining the trend. The company has launched Codex Pets, an optional animated companion baked into its AI coding tool.

Like most AI companions, it isn't doing any heavy lifting. But Codex Pets earns its keep as a floating overlay that surfaces project status updates in real-time, so you don't have to switch tabs. Users can monitor active threads and track whether Codex is running, waiting on input, or ready for review, all without ever leaving whatever they're working on.

Getting started is straightforward. Head to Settings, select Appearance, then choose Pets to pick from the built-in options. Once activated, the floating overlay can be toggled on or off by typing /pet in the composer, using Wake Pet or Tuck Away Pet in Settings > Appearance, or by pressing Cmd+K on Mac or Ctrl+K on Windows.

The feature ships with eight built-in variations — including a cat and dog — but the more interesting play is the custom pet creator. Users can prompt Codex directly to generate their own companion, then share it online. A quick scroll through the homepage reveals the community has already gotten to work. Current creations include Goku, Patrick Star, Microsoft's long-retired Clippy, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, and — naturally — a goblin.

Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update has always been a reliable source of joy — or at the very least, a place to laugh — in what continues to be a genuinely strange moment in history. The jokes are great, but they're also, increasingly, hitting a little too close to home.

Hosts Michael Che and Colin Jost do their level best to navigate the week's headlines, tackling the abrupt collapse of Spirit Airlines and the continued, inexhaustible chaos emanating from the Trump administration. The latter is fertile ground at this point, and the pair works through them with ease.

Personally, the best bit from this involves King Charles' recent meeting with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, and the conspicuous absence of any attempt by the British Crown to walk away with yet another piece of Indian cultural heritage.

Everyone has at least one bad breakup they'd rather forget. For Olivia Rodrigo's character Saturday night, that breakup was very much front and center.

The sketch finds Rodrigo at a party, freshly face-to-face with an ex she's determined to make jealous. Her solution is to recruit the perfectly nice, completely game guy standing next to her, played by Tommy Brennan. A solid plan, all things considered.

Her ex, played by Ben Marshall, has the exact same idea. Unfortunately, the woman he recruited for his scheme is being played by Ashley Padilla. So, while Rodrigo and her easygoing pretend date have a genuinely lovely time, the ex's night devolves into something approaching a minor psychological crisis. Padilla has a particular gift for playing characters who exist just slightly outside the bounds of normal human behavior, and this sketch is a showcase for exactly that.

A great time all around.

Another day, another pop star doing a Shop TV sketch on Saturday Night Live.

Much like fellow pop girly Sabrina Carpenter before her, this weekend's host Olivia Rodrigo pulled double duty as both host and musical guest. And also like Carpenter, the Guts singer found herself behind the counter of Shop TV — the show's recurring QVC-style segment featuring hosts Rhett and Bev, played by Mikey Day and Ashley Padilla, hawking products that have absolutely no business existing.

This week's offering comes from Daisy, played by Rodrigo, who's selling lava cakes innocently shaped like buttholes.

There are several lines of dialogue in this sketch that, personally, did not need to exist and cannot be unheard. The bit is a great time, genuinely — but as Rhett and Bev themselves might say, the less time spent discussing the specifics, the better. So, consider this your warning and your recommendation simultaneously.

Released in August 2025, Pips puts a unique spin on dominoes, creating a fun single-player experience that could become your next daily gaming habit.

Currently, if you're stuck, the game only offers to reveal the entire puzzle, forcing you to move on to the next difficulty level and start over. However, we have you covered! Below are piecemeal answers that will serve as hints so that you can find your way through each difficulty level.

How to play Pips

If you've ever played dominoes, you'll have a passing familiarity with how Pips is played. As we've shared in our previous hints stories for Pips, the tiles, like dominoes, are placed vertically or horizontally and connect with each other. The main difference between a traditional game of dominoes and Pips is the color-coded conditions you have to address. The touching tiles don't necessarily have to match.

The conditions you have to meet are specific to the color-coded spaces. For example, if it provides a single number, every side of a tile in that space must add up to the number provided. It is possible — and common — for only half a tile to be within a color-coded space.

Here are common examples you'll run into across the difficulty levels:

• Number: All the pips in this space must add up to the number.

• Equal: Every domino half in this space must be the same number of pips.

• Not Equal: Every domino half in this space must have a completely different number of pips.

• Less than: Every domino half in this space must add up to less than the number.

• Greater than: Every domino half in this space must add up to more than the number.

If an area does not have any color coding, it means there are no conditions on the portions of dominoes within those spaces.

Today's Connections: Sports Edition will require some knowledge of popular U.S. sports and pop culture.

As we've shared in previous hints stories, this is a version of the popular New York Times word game that seeks to test the knowledge of sports fans.

Like the original Connections, the game is all about finding the "common threads between words." And just like Wordle, Connections resets after midnight and each new set of words gets trickier and trickier — so we've served up some hints and tips to get you over the hurdle.

What is Connections: Sports Edition?

The NYT's latest daily word game has launched in association with The Athletic, the New York Times property that provides the publication's sports coverage. The sports Connections can be played on both web browsers and mobile devices and require players to group four words that share something in common.

Each puzzle features 16 words, and each grouping of words is split into four categories. These sets could comprise anything from book titles, software, country names, etc. Even though multiple words will seem like they fit together, there's only one correct answer.

If a player gets all four words in a set correct, those words are removed from the board. Guess wrong and it counts as a mistake — players get up to four mistakes before the game ends.

Players can also rearrange and shuffle the board to make spotting connections easier. Additionally, each group is color-coded with yellow being the easiest, followed by green, blue, and purple. Like Wordle, you can share the results with your friends on social media.

Saturday Night Live returned from a brief hiatus Saturday with a cold open depicting a joint press conference between Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and FBI Director Kash Patel, with "Master of None" creator Aziz Ansari playing the latter.

Colin Jost's Hegseth hit the familiar beats at the podium — performative machismo, military bravado, and repeated jabs at the secretary's well-documented drinking habits. This time, Hegseth arrived at the mic hauling an oversized pitcher of scotch, which he assured the room was his one for the day. He then fielded questions from the press about the administration's handling of U.S. strikes on Iran, dismissing each reporter with the particular brand of smug confidence that has become central to Jost's portrayal of the character.

Ansari's Patel proved to be the sketch's standout, arriving to defend his tenure at the FBI and proceeding to do so poorly. The bit's centerpiece involved Patel simultaneously denying and admitting that he had locked himself out of his work email for 36 hours after forgetting he had changed his password to "kashmeoutside69."

Funnily enough, Patel was reportedly locked out of his FBI email in real life and believed, at least momentarily, that he was being fired. As the sketch demonstrated, the distance between SNL's Cold Open and the actual news cycle has rarely felt smaller.
