in the wake of the recent spate of terrorist attacks in the country, Kenya has begun to use its police force to crackdown on illegal immigrants, particularly those of Somali origin.

“Scapegoating and abusing Somalis for heinous attacks by unknown people is not going to protect Kenyans, Somalis, or anyone else against more attacks,” HRW’s Gerry Simpson

The Human Rights Watch has noted in dismay that Kenya is deporting many Somalis back to their country without fair legal process and has noted that this isnt fair.

In a statement, the HRW accuses Kenya of disregarding the rights of the Somalis sent back and of keeping them detained in appalling conditions and the Kenyan police have apparently also been seen  ”whipping, beating, and verbally abusing detainees”, and asking for bribes and keeping them detained past the allowed 24 hour limit.

In response to this Joseph Ole Lenku, Kenya’s interior minister, has said close to 4,000 people have so far been detained in the operation, and 82 of them flown back to Somalia’s capital Mogadishu. He said hundreds more were still undergoing identity checks.

The US State department has released a travel advisory to Kenya citing the numerous terrorist attacks as the reason for their renewed concern.

In the past year and a half, there have been numerous attacks involving shootings, grenades or other explosive devices in Kenya.

US citizens in Kenya should be extremely vigilant with regard to their personal security, particularly in crowded public places such as clubs, hotels, resorts, shopping centers, restaurants, bus stations and places of worship

This comes after a tumultuous week that saw a Muslim cleric killed, at least a dozen people killed and several more injured in suspected terrorist attacks in the country.

President Uhuru Kenyatta has pledged to upgrade our airports in hopes that this will lure tourists to the country despite the threats and boost the tourism industry by promoting travel. The president announced thos as he launched a new Boeing 787 Dreamliner intended to boost trade with the world through its long haul flights.

Sheikh Abubakar Shariff, also known as Makaburi, has been shot and killed outside the Shanzu law courts in the port city of Mombasa in Kenya. Witnesses say they saw three men in flowing white robes pull up and open fire, they then sped away toward Mombasa. Riots have broken out in several parts of the city in protest.

Makaburi, a religious leader known for his radical views and his involvement in radicalizing the youth had been arrested several times in relation to incidents of terror but had, however, never been charged.

Makaburi has most recently been connected to the Likoni church killings that happened last week, he was also accused of inciting the youth to violence in an incident last year  in connection with the chaos that followed the murder of Sheikh Aboud Rogo.

Seven people have been killed and 25 others injured in an attack in Nairobi’s Eastleigh area, this came after a man allegedly blew himself up while assembling a bomb.

Eastleigh is a predominantly Somali part of Nairobi, known particularly as a market. The Al Shabaab militant group is suspected to be behind this as part of a series of attacks in Kenya, however, no one has claimed responsibility for this attack so far.

The attack comes in the wake of several terrorist attacks in the country, where the people have been asking questions about the country’s security systems and raising serious concerns over the state of the country’s defense forces. 

This follows an attack in Likoni, Mombasa where six people died in an attack on a church, this was also a suspected Al Shabaab attack.

675 suspects have been arrested in relation to the incident.
