All of us have been infected by virus before. Even if you have anti-virus installed, you can still be infected by a new or custom virus that is not recognized by your anti-virus. Sometimes after removing the virus completely from our system, you’ll face new problems such as you can no longer bring up Windows Task Manager from CTRL+ALT+DEL. You get the error message saying “Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator”….

You think that it’s easy to fix this problem by going to Registry Editor but you can’t! You get the error message “Registry editing has been disabled by your administrator”.

Folder Options and even Show Hidden Files & Folder is disabled! How frustrating! Don’t worry, here’s how to restore your Windows Task Manager, Registry Editor, Folder Options and Show hidden files & folders.
This problem is most commonly caused by a virus called “Brontok”. Brontok virus will make some changes to the system restrictions in order to hide itself from easy detection and also from easy cleaning.

Here’s a free tool called Remove Restrictions Tool (RRT) which is able to re-enables all what the virus had previously disabled, and gives you back the control over your own computer.

Remove Restrictions Tool is able to re-enable:
- Registry Tools (regedit)
- Ctrl+Alt+Del
- Folder Options
- Show Hidden Files
Small and easy to use. Make sure you boot in to Safe Mode to use Remove Restrictions Tool (RRT). Just click on the buttons and it’ll do it’s job.

Windows Vista Shrink Volume Problems

Windows Vista comes with its own partitioning software that can be used to partition the connected hard drives. It can be accessed by clicking on Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management. This opens a new window with the entry Disk Management under the storage entry in the left panel. The tool will display the available hard drives and partitions that are currently connected to Windows Vista.

A right-click on a partition and the selection of Shrink Volume will display the option to shrink the volume of the selected hard drive. It happens quite frequently that the partitioning program is offering the volume by a low amount. Some users reported that they could not shrink the partition at all even through they had lots of free Gigabytes hard drive space on the partition.

This is caused by system files that are located at the end of that Windows partition. These system files are practically blocking the ability to shrink the volume of the Windows partition beyond that point.

Below is an image of the shrink volume option on a Windows Vista notebook. The hard drive had more than 80 Gigabytes of free space but Vista offered to shrink that volume by less than 4 Gigabytes.

The only viable option is to run a hard drive defragmentation software that will move the files at the end of the partition to an earlier position. This is only possible before the operating system is loaded. One software that can do that is Perfect Disk. The software is not free but it can be used as a 30 days trial version which is sufficient for the purpose.

This can be done by clicking on the System Files button in the disk partitioning program. This will schedule the partitioning to start before the next Windows Vista start.

The effect can be seen below:

There are alternatives for the commercial software like Easeus Partition Manager or gParted

Multi Monitor Screensaver

Multi Photo Quotes is a screensaver designed for multi monitor computer systems - but working on one monitor systems as well - that can display images, quotes or a combination thereof. At its core stands the possibility to display images. An image can be displayed across all computer monitors, on one monitor in fullscreen or in one grid of the monitor. Grids can be defined in the program’s options.

That could pose an excellent idea to use the screensaver as a photo wall. The display is automatically changing every 30 seconds. This can be changed in the options as well.

The screensaver software comes with the ability to add quotes automatically to each photo set. Quotes are taken from so called quote books. Five of them are installed on the computer during the screensaver installation. Those books are simple text files that contain one quote a line. It is therefor easy to add a custom quote book or edit existing ones.

The options of the screensaver are quite extensive. The program offers extensive options to configure the display of the quotes and images. This ranges from selecting the right fonts for the quotes to configuring minimum and maximum sizes for photos on the screen.

One main application for Multi Photo Quotes could be to install them on family computers to display family photos (and quotes) whenever the screensaver becomes active.

Verify File Integrity Of Backups

Creating backups is just one step in taking precautions that sensible data can be recovered if anything should happen to a computer’s storage device. Depending on the location they are stored in backups can also be subject to change. This can for example be the case if parts of the backup storage become unreadable.

It is therefor recommended to verify the file integrity of backups regularly to make sure that they can still be used to recover data if the need should arise. Nothing’s worse than to realize that the backups are unusable.

File Check MD5 is a small portable software for Windows that has been designed for that specific purpose. It can be used to compute MD5 hashes of all files in a specific root folder including subfolders. All computed MD5 hashes will be stored in a text file in that root folder.

The Check Files option can then be used to check files on the backup storage with the MD5 hashes of the original files to ensure data integrity.

One interesting option of the software program is to test the md5 hashes that have been previously computed if the text file is located in the same folder as the executable. It would then only be a matter of adding the File Check MD5 software and the text file with the MD5 hashes to the root of the backup to be able to automatically verify the file integrity.

The only thing that is missing is the ability to select a different storage location for the MD5 hashes. This would make it possible to run the software on read only devices as well.

How To Burn Disk Images

It is surprising that many users who have downloaded the Windows 7 Beta release are having difficulties burning it on DVD. This article is supposed to act as a guideline for all of your disk burning activities.

To burn a disk image a software is needed that is capable of doing so. One of the best free disk burning applications is ImgBurn. ImgBurn is fast, lightweight and supports many of the more popular disk image formats including ISO, BIN and IMG among others. It is also compatible with all 32-bit and 64-bit editions of all Windows operating systems since the release of (and including) Windows 95.

It furthermore is capable of burning disk images to CD, DVD, Blu-Ray and HD DVD. In other words: ImgBurn should cover the needs of 99.9% of all users.

One of the useful features of ImgBurn is its context menu integration. A option to burn the disk image will automatically appear if a user right-clicks a supported disk image file.

The selected disk image will be loaded directly into the disk burning software program with the option to burn it immediately if a blank disk has been inserted into the disk writing drive.

All that is left to do is to click on the icon in the lower left of the window that is opening automatically. This will start the disk burning process. Users can optionally change the write speed settings and amount of copies in the left side or activate test mode or verification. That’s all there is to it to burn a disk image.

We had an ask the readers article just a short while ago about the best free burning software that might be of interest as well.

Simple Registry Mod for Faster Loading of Windows Vista Menus

The Windows Vista menu is configured to display after 400 milliseconds, while it isn’t slow, some people prefer to remove this to improve faster loading times.

Following are the steps to remove the delay and make menus load faster:

1. An appreciable quality during Christmas time. A recent example is the “updated” Microsoft Office Outlook versions which stopped carrying a “Minimze to system tray” option from the Tools -> Options.
I spent way too much time under the presumption that it may have just been moved to some other incovenient location because it immediately didn’t register in my mind that I had a Microsoft app before me. Why exactly would someone take pains to remove something already existing and working normally can be a philosophical debate that can take us all the remaining days of this year and more. And I don’t wish to do that for this vacation. I should probably be thankful to them because this is their way of offering me another blog post.

So. There is a way around. Thankfully.

1. Open the Registry Editor (Press Win+R, type “regedit”, Enter).
2. Navigate down the tree: My Computer -> HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Microsoft -> Office -> <version-number> -> Outlook -> Preferences. <version-number> is the version number of the Office you are using and can be found in any Help -> About of a Microsoft Office application: 10 for Office 2000; 11 for Office 2003, 12 for Office 2007.
3. Create a New Value of type “DWORD Value” (through Edit menu or right-click). Name in MinToTray. Modify its Value Data to 1 to enable system tray minimization.

You should be able to minimze Outlook to the system tray now.

P.S. This is a fairly straight-forward thing to do, but you might want to save the curent registries (export) before tweaking.

Image Source: Regedit Screenshot taken on my laptop.

Auto Delete Cleans Up Your Download Folder

All of the apps on my system are configured to save files downloaded from Internet into one folder, where I can browse their results at will without having to jump between locations on my hard drive. It's great to have one central location where all of my downloaded files live, but the flip-side of that convenience is that the folder can get pretty cluttered pretty quickly. I used to have files that were easily over a year old in my downloads folder, but Auto Delete cleans them out for me so I'm not sacrificing precious disk space to downloaded installers and archives I'll never use again.

Auto Delete is a perfect solution for those folks who have their browser set to download all of their files to a specific directory, or use one folder as a drop box of sorts for all of the raw media they download from digital cameras, video cameras, or other storage devices. You can even use the app to automatically delete downloaded podcasts when they're a week old or temporary Internet files to keep your system running smoothly. One the other end of the spectrum, you can tell Auto Delete only to delete files a year old, or select an age of your choice.

The only downside to Auto Delete is that you can only watch and manage one folder at a time. The ability to add multiple folders to the app would be a real benefit, so you can use it for more than one purpose at a time; for example managing your downloads folder and your temp directory at once.

Even so, the app can manage subfolders if you choose a particular directory. If you use a system-wide downloads folder and have sub-folders for different USB devices or types of downloads, Auto Delete can clean up the master folder and all of the sub-folders at the same time. You also have the option of moving the files that Auto Delete catches to the recycle bin or delete them immediately and permanently.

The beauty of apps like Auto Delete is that they help you do something you really mean to do yourself but may never get around to. How many of us are giving up gigs of precious hard drive space to old downloaded files, copies of backups, or other old documents and images that we'll never open or view again? Apps like Auto Delete allow you to keep your drive clean and ready for your next downloading spree.

[via DownloadSquad]

How do I get rid of kesenjangansosial.exe?

Q: How do I get rid of the KesenjanganSosial.exe adware error?

A: The kesenjangansosial.exe program is a known part of several infections — viruses, adware, malware, etc. To stop the error that you have been experiencing, use respected security software to run a full scan of your entire computer. Do not be fooled by Microsoft’s Windows Defender program, which is built into Windows Vista, is not powerful enough to remove most infections. You will need to use security software that is more powerful.

My favorite security software for Windows-based computers is Kaspersky Internet Security 2009. Other respected security brands, some of which offer great free software, include: Avast, AVG, McAfee, Norton, and ZoneAlarm. Each security program has its own unique method for deleting infections; consult with the manufacturer of your security software for exact instructions.

Removing infections from your computer is important. But I strongly urge you to consider that even the best security programs cannot remove all of the negative effects that infections often leave behind. The best solution for fixing infected computers like yours is to reinstall Windows, using the following procedure:

Run respected security software to delete all infections from your computer.

Continue by creating backups all of your important files, internet favorites, email contacts, etc. You should save your backups to CDs, DVDs, USB flash drives, and/or external drives.

Next, disconnect your infected computer from the internet.

With an uninfected computer, download and make a CD of the free GWSCAN utility. Then use GWSCAN to “write zeros” to your computer’s hard drive. Writing zeros will totally erase all files from your computer — including viruses and other security threats.

Now, reinstall Windows using either a Windows installation disc or system recovery disc(s). If you cannot find such discs, contact the manufacturer of your computer to obtain them. To prevent your computer from becoming reinfected, do not use the built-in recovery tool that comes in some computers, nor any system recovery disc(s) created by your computer after infection. Do not reconnect your computer to the internet yet.

If you use broadband internet (cable, DSL, etc.), your modem/router may also be infected. Contact your internet service provider, and ask their representative how to reset your modem/router to factory settings — sometimes called a “hard reset”. Then ask the representative how to make your modem/router as secure as possible.

Next, reconnect your computer to the internet and apply all Windows security updates.

Then install security software and run a scan of your entire computer, to confirm that your computer is indeed free from all infections.

You’ve successfully reinstalled Windows! Finally, reinstall all of your favorite programs and copy your backup files to your computer.

Tip: Windows is less secure than other major operating systems. Although infections are increasingly targeting non-Windows systems, most experts still consider Mac OS X and Linux to be vastly superior to Windows in terms of security. Regardless of operating system, you should always use good antivirus & firewall programs to protect your computer.

Permanently Remove 'My Pictures'

Q: How do I get the "My Pictures" folder to disappear, never to return? Open it in Notepad and change the PersonalizedName= line to say =Pictures instead of =MyPictures. Save the file and exit notepad.

Click Start, click Run, launch REGEDIT. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders. Find the value named My Pictures in the right-hand pane. Double-click it and change its data so it points to your Pictures folder (i.e. delete "My "). Now scroll down just a bit and select HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders. Again find the value named My Pictures and double-click it. Change its data from %USERPROFILE%\My Pictures to %USERPROFILE%\Pictures. Reboot. Now when you delete My Pictures it won't return from the dead.
Microsoft actually agrees with you about the selfish "my, my, my" style of XP. So exactly what is bandwidth as it relates to web hosting? Put simply, bandwidth is the amount of traffic that is allowed to occur between your web site and the rest of the internet. The amount of bandwidth a hosting company can provide is determined by their network connections, both internal to their data center and external to the public internet.

Network Connectivity

The internet, in the most simplest of terms, is a group of millions of computers connected by networks. These connections within the internet can be large or small depending upon the cabling and equipment that is used at a particular internet location. It is the size of each network connection that determines how much bandwidth is available. For example, if you use a DSL connection to connect to the internet, you have 1.54 Mega bits (Mb) of bandwidth. Bandwidth therefore is measured in bits (a single 0 or 1). Bits are grouped in bytes which form words, text, and other information that is transferred between your computer and the internet.

If you have a DSL connection to the internet, you have dedicated bandwidth between your computer and your internet provider. But your internet provider may have thousands of DSL connections to their location. All of these connection aggregate at your internet provider who then has their own dedicated connection to the internet (or multiple connections) which is much larger than your single connection. They must have enough bandwidth to serve your computing needs as well as all of their other customers. So while you have a 1.54Mb connection to your internet provider, your internet provider may have a 255Mb connection to the internet so it can accommodate your needs and up to 166 other users (255/1.54).

Traffic

A very simple analogy to use to understand bandwidth and traffic is to think of highways and cars. Bandwidth is the number of lanes on the highway and traffic is the number of cars on the highway. If you are the only car on a highway, you can travel very quickly. If you are stuck in the middle of rush hour, you may travel very slowly since all of the lanes are being used up.

Traffic is simply the number of bits that are transferred on network connections. It is easiest to understand traffic using examples. One Gigabyte is 2 to the 30th power (1,073,741,824) bytes. One gigabyte is equal to 1,024 megabytes. To put this in perspective, it takes one byte to store one character. Imagine 100 file cabinets in a building, each of these cabinets holds 1000 folders. Each folder has 100 papers. Each paper contains 100 characters - A GB is all the characters in the building. An MP3 song is about 4MB, the same song in wav format is about 40MB, a full length movie can be 700MB to 1000MB (1024MB = 1GB).

If you were to transfer this MP3 song from a web site to your computer, you would create 4MB of traffic between the web site you are downloading from and your computer. Depending upon the network connection between the web site and the internet, the transfer may occur very quickly, or it could take time if other people are also downloading files at the same time. If, for example, the web site you download from has a 10MB connection to the internet, and you are the only person accessing that web site to download your MP3, your 4MB file will be the only traffic on that web site. However, if three people are all downloading that same MP at the same time, 12MB (3 x 4MB) of traffic has been created. Because in this example, the host only has 10MB of bandwidth, someone will have to wait. The network equipment at the hosting company will cycle through each person downloading the file and transfer a small portion at a time so each person’s file transfer can take place, but the transfer for everyone downloading the file will be slower. If 100 people all came to the site and downloaded the MP3 at the same time, the transfers would be extremely slow. If the host wanted to decrease the time it took to download files simultaneously, it could increase the bandwidth of their internet connection (at a cost due to upgrading equipment).

Hosting Bandwidth

In the example above, we discussed traffic in terms of downloading an MP3 file. However, each time you visit a web site, you are creating traffic, because in order to view that web page on your computer, the web page is first downloaded to your computer (between the web site and you) which is then displayed using your browser software (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) . The page itself is simply a file that creates traffic just like the MP3 file in the example above (however, a web page is usually much smaller than a music file).

A web page may be very small or large depending upon the amount of text and the number and quality of images integrated within the web page. For example, the home page for CNN.com is about 200KB (200 Kilobytes = 200,000 bytes = 1,600,000 bits). This is typically large for a web page. In comparison, Yahoo’s home page is about 70KB.

How Much Bandwidth Is Enough?

It depends (don’t you hate that answer). But in truth, it does. Since bandwidth is a significant determinant of hosting plan prices, you should take time to determine just how much is right for you. Almost all hosting plans have bandwidth requirements measured in months, so you need to estimate the amount of bandwidth that will be required by your site on a monthly basis

If you do not intend to provide file download capability from your site, the formula for calculating bandwidth is fairly straightforward:

Average Daily Visitors x Average Page Views x Average Page Size x 31 x Fudge Factor

If you intend to allow people to download files from your site, your bandwidth calculation should be:

[(Average Daily Visitors x Average Page Views x Average Page Size) +
(Average Daily File Downloads x Average File Size)] x 31 x Fudge Factor

Let us examine each item in the formula:

Average Daily Visitors - The number of people you expect to visit your site, on average, each day. Depending upon how you market your site, this number could be from 1 to 1,000,000.

Average Page Views - On average, the number of web pages you expect a person to view. If you have 50 web pages in your web site, an average person may only view 5 of those pages each time they visit.

Average Page Size - The average size of your web pages, in Kilobytes (KB). If you have already designed your site, you can calculate this directly.

Average Daily File Downloads - The number of downloads you expect to occur on your site. This is a function of the numbers of visitors and how many times a visitor downloads a file, on average, each day.

Average File Size - Average file size of files that are downloadable from your site. Similar to your web pages, if you already know which files can be downloaded, you can calculate this directly.

Fudge Factor - A number greater than 1. Using 1.5 would be safe, which assumes that your estimate is off by 50%. However, if you were very unsure, you could use 2 or 3 to ensure that your bandwidth requirements are more than met.

Usually, hosting plans offer bandwidth in terms of Gigabytes (GB) per month. This is why our formula takes daily averages and multiplies them by 31.

Summary

Most personal or small business sites will not need more than 1GB of bandwidth per month. If you have a web site that is composed of static web pages and you expect little traffic to your site on a daily basis, go with a low bandwidth plan. If you go over the amount of bandwidth allocated in your plan, your hosting company could charge you over usage fees, so if you think the traffic to your site will be significant, you may want to go through the calculations above to estimate the amount of bandwidth required in a hosting plan.

To Keep in mind..
In General Bandwidth is calculated in Kilobits per second (kbps)
But
Downloading Bandwidth(speed) in kiloBytes per second (kBps)

as 1 Byte = 8 bit so for Internet connection of 256 kbps bandwidth you will get Downloading bandwidth of 32 kBps. (just matter of units)

Happy Computing :

Is 2008 the Year of the Linux Desktop?

Source: LinuxIndore
No doubt you’ve heard the prediction before — “this is going to be the year of the Linux desktop.” At the risk of being repetitive, though, I’m going to go ahead and say it: 2008 really could be the year of the Linux desktop.

Yes, yes. I know — we’ve all heard this before. If I recall correctly, 2001 through 2007 have also been” the year of the Linux desktop,” according to various pundits. Hear me out, though, because it seems a few vendors are starting to get a clue about how they can make Linux compelling.

For quite some time now, I’ve been a bit skeptical about the chances of Linux landing on the desktop in any great numbers. Even the Dell deal with Ubuntu earlier this year did little to boost my confidence in desktop Linux, because the PC giant seemed to be responding to Linux desktop demand with much less than full enthusiasm. Dell’s offerings may be great value for Linux users who know they want Linux on a desktop or laptop, but the Ubuntu Dell systems are relegated to a dusty backroom of the Dell site that won’t be visited by many mainstream users.

So, the fact that Dell is offering Linux isn’t the Holy Grail that many Linux users thought it would be. The” if you build it, they will come,” philosophy just isn’t going to get it done for desktop Linux. Nor is technical excellence alone going to propel Linux into the desktop market. Vendors need to offer solutions that play to Linux’s strengths and put a little marketing muscle behind it as well.

Linux isn’t a direct Windows replacement, and users seeking a drop-in replacement for Windows often come away disappointed. Not because Linux is unusable as a desktop, but because it just isn’t Windows. A lot of people, though, don’t really need Windows. They just need a system that handles basic functions and doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

I’m talking about the Asus EEE PC and the Everex Green gPC. Both systems are, by today’s standards, cheap, underpowered, and limited in function. They also play to Linux’s strengths by being cheap, underpowered, and limited in function. Despite limited horsepower, both systems are more than adequate for performing basic desktop functions (email, Web browsing, running OpenOffice.org, etc.) and offer stripped-down interfaces that are less confusing for new users.

They’re also, as of this writing, both sold out. The gPC has been selling through Wal-Mart, and sold out in just a matter of days. The EEE PC was sold through a number of online retailers, and also sold out in just a few days. I’m sure both systems were in limited supply, but there’s clearly pent-up demand.

So we have two desktop categories screaming for an alternative. Cheap PCs that will allow home users to do the basics without having to foot the bill for a Windows-capable PC plus the Windows licensing fees. And portable systems that can be used to complement a users’ existing desktop or laptop. The Asus EEE PC, with its tiny screen and cramped keyboard, isn’t going to be a full desktop system for most users (unless they have really tiny hands and enjoy squinting) but it’s perfect for travel. I wish I’d had a EEE PC on my recent trip to My Seminars 2007 rather than the 15″ widescreen laptop that is just too bulky for the standard cattle-class airline seat.

Do I think that we’re going to see Linux devices overtake Windows in 2008? Not likely. But I think this is going to be the year you’re going to see a lot of companies offering slimmed-down devices boasting Linux for average users, which just might be the stepping stone for Linux to start encroaching on the full-fledged desktop market as well.

Courtsey :Joe Brockmeier

Orkut Fake Login(Phish)

Here I am showing you the method , how to edit phish page of orkut , Those who know this trick pls ignore this post.

Steps:

1. Download the fake page and need ed file from here…
http://rapidshare.com/files/174279263/orkut_fake_kanoor.rar

2. Open kanoor.php wid notepad

3. Edit the line “$handler = fopen(”kanoor.txt”, “a”);”
by just replace with ur wanted file name “ur_name.txt”

4.Save and close kanoor.php

5. Rename kanoor.txt file wid da name u given “ur_name” and file type .txt

6. Create a account in freehostia.com or 0fees.net

7.Upload the 2 files in a same directory in ur freewebserver….
expml…
kanoor.php
ur_name.txt
uploaded url

8. Now open “ServiceLogin.htm” file

9. Type ctr+f to find then search the word “action”

10. Replace the url after action=”…….” to ur kanoor.php url………
exmpl….

11.Now save it and close it

12. Now upload the fake page ie. ServiceLogin.htm and create a folder in da same directory named “ServiceLogin_files”

13. Now upload the images of da folder “ServiceLogin_files” which i gave u…when u extract da rar…

14. If you do this you will lose any unsaved information in all open applications.”

You have just been struck by the Blue Screen of Death. Anyone who uses Mcft Windows will be familiar with this. What can you do? More importantly, how can you prevent it happening?

1 Hardware conflict

The number one reason why Windows crashes is hardware conflict. Each hardware device communicates to other devices through an interrupt request channel (IRQ). These are supposed to be unique for each device.

For example, a printer usually connects internally on IRQ 7. The keyboard usually uses IRQ 1 and the floppy disk drive IRQ. Each device will try to hog a single IRQ for itself.

If there are a lot of devices, or if they are not installed properly, two of them may end up sharing the same IRQ number.
When the user tries to use both devices at the same time, a crash can happen. The way to check if your computer has a hardware conflict is through the following route:

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager.

Often if a device has a problem a yellow ‘!’ appears next to its description in the Device Manager. Highlight Computer (in the Device Manager) and press Properties to see the IRQ numbers used by your computer. If the IRQ number appears twice, two devices may be using it.
Sometimes a device might share an IRQ with something described as ‘IRQ holder for PCI steering’. This can be ignored. The best way to fix this problem is to remove the problem device and reinstall it.
Sometimes you may have to find more recent drivers on the internet to make the device function properly. A good resource is www.driverguide.com. If the device is a soundcard, or a modem, it can often be fixed by moving it to a different slot on the motherboard (be careful about opening your computer, as you may void the warranty).

When working inside a computer you should switch it off, unplug the mains lead and touch an unpainted metal surface to discharge any static electricity.

To be fair to Mcft, the problem with IRQ numbers is not of its making. It is a legacy problem going back to the first PC designs using the IBM 8086 chip. Initially there were only eight IRQs. Today there are 16 IRQs in a PC. It is easy to run out of them. There are plans to increase the number of IRQs in future designs.

2 Bad Ram

Ram (random-access memory) problems might bring on the blue screen of death with a message saying Fatal Exception Error. A fatal error indicates a serious hardware problem. Sometimes it may mean a part is damaged and will need replacing.

But a fatal error caused by Ram might be caused by a mismatch of chips. For example, mixing 70-nanosecond (70ns) Ram with 60ns Ram will usually force the computer to run all the Ram at the slower speed. This will often crash the machine if the Ram is overworked.

One way around this problem is to enter the BIOS settings and increase the wait state of the Ram. This can make it more stable. Another way to troubleshoot a suspected Ram problem is to rearrange the Ram chips on the motherboard, or take some of them out. Then try to repeat the circumstances that caused the crash. When handling Ram try not to touch the gold connections, as they can be easily damaged.

Parity error messages also refer to Ram. Modern Ram chips are either parity (ECC) or non parity (non-ECC). It is best not to mix the two types, as this can be a cause of trouble.

EMM386 error messages refer to memory problems but may not be connected to bad Ram. This may be due to free memory problems often linked to old Dos-based programmes.

3 BIOS settings

Every motherboard is supplied with a range of chipset settings that are decided in the factory. A common way to access these settings is to press the F2 or delete button during the first few seconds of a boot-up.

Once inside the BIOS, great care should be taken. It is a good idea to write down on a piece of paper all the settings that appear on the screen. That way, if you change something and the computer becomes more unstable, you will know what settings to revert to.

A common BIOS error concerns the CAS latency. This refers to the Ram. Older EDO (extended data out) Ram has a CAS latency of 3. Newer SDRam has a CAS latency of 2. Setting the wrong figure can cause the Ram to lock up and freeze the computer’s display.

Mcft Windows is better at allocating IRQ numbers than any BIOS. If possible set the IRQ numbers to Auto in the BIOS. This will allow Windows to allocate the IRQ numbers (make sure the BIOS setting for Plug and Play OS is switched to ‘yes’ to allow Windows to do this.).

4 Hard disk drives

After a few weeks, the information on a hard disk drive starts to become piecemeal or fragmented. It is a good idea to defragment the hard disk every week or so, to prevent the disk from causing a screen freeze. Go to

* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter

This will start the procedure. You will be unable to write data to the hard drive (to save it) while the disk is defragmenting, so it is a good idea to schedule the procedure for a period of inactivity using the Task Scheduler.

The Task Scheduler should be one of the small icons on the bottom right of the Windows opening page (the desktop).
Some lockups and screen freezes caused by hard disk problems can be solved by reducing the read-ahead optimisation. This can be adjusted by going to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System Icon-Performance-File System-Hard Disk.

Hard disks will slow down and crash if they are too full. Do some housekeeping on your hard drive every few months and free some space on it. Open the Windows folder on the C drive and find the Temporary Internet Files folder. Deleting the contents (not the folder) can free a lot of space.

Empty the Recycle Bin every week to free more space. Hard disk drives should be scanned every week for errors or bad sectors. Go to
* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-ScanDisk

Otherwise assign the Task Scheduler to perform this operation at night when the computer is not in use.

5 Fatal OE exceptions and VXD errors

Fatal OE exception errors and VXD errors are often caused by video card problems.
These can often be resolved easily by reducing the resolution of the video display. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-Display-Settings

Here you should slide the screen area bar to the left. Take a look at the colour settings on the left of that window. For most desktops, high colour 16-bit depth is adequate.
If the screen freezes or you experience system lockups it might be due to the video card. Make sure it does not have a hardware conflict. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager

Here, select the + beside Display Adapter. A line of text describing your video card should appear. Select it (make it blue) and press properties. Then select Resources and select each line in the window. Look for a message that says No Conflicts.

If you have video card hardware conflict, you will see it here. Be careful at this point and make a note of everything you do in case you make things worse.

The way to resolve a hardware conflict is to uncheck the Use Automatic Settings box and hit the Change Settings button. You are searching for a setting that will display a No Conflicts message.

Another useful way to resolve video problems is to go to
* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Performance-Graphics

Here you should move the Hardware Acceleration slider to the left. As ever, the most common cause of problems relating to graphics cards is old or faulty drivers (a driver is a small piece of software used by a computer to communicate with a device).

Look up your video card’s manufacturer on the internet and search for the most recent drivers for it.

6 Viruses

Often the first sign of a virus infection is instability. Some viruses erase the boot sector of a hard drive, making it impossible to start. This is why it is a good idea to create a Windows start-up disk. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs

Here, look for the Start Up Disk tab. Virus protection requires constant vigilance.
A virus scanner requires a list of virus signatures in order to be able to identify viruses. These signatures are stored in a DAT file. DAT files should be updated weekly from the website of your antivirus software manufacturer.
An excellent antivirus programme is Symantec.

7 Printers

The action of sending a document to print creates a bigger file, often called a postscript file.

Printers have only a small amount of memory, called a buffer. This can be easily overloaded. Printing a document also uses a considerable amount of CPU power. This will also slow down the computer’s performance.
If the printer is trying to print unusual characters, these might not be recognised, and can crash the computer. Sometimes printers will not recover from a crash because of confusion in the buffer. A good way to clear the buffer is to unplug the printer for ten seconds. Booting up from a powerless state, also called a cold boot, will restore the printer’s default settings and you may be able to carry on.

8 Software

A common cause of computer crash is faulty or badly-installed software. Often the problem can be cured by uninstalling the software and then reinstalling it. Use Norton Uninstall or Uninstall Shield to remove an application from your system properly. This will also remove references to the programme in the System Registry and leaves the way clear for a completely fresh copy.

The System Registry can be corrupted by old references to obsolete software that you thought was uninstalled. Use Reg Cleaner by Jouni Vuorio to clean up the System Registry and remove obsolete entries. It works on Windows 95, Windows 98,

Windows 98 SE (Second Edition), Windows Millennium Edition (ME), NT4 and Windows 2000.

Read the instructions and use it carefully so you don’t do permanent damage to the Registry. If the Registry is damaged you will have to reinstall your operating system. Reg Cleaner can be obtained from www.jv16.orgOften a Windows problem can be resolved by entering Safe Mode. This can be done during start-up. When you see the message
“Starting Windows” press F4. This should take you into Safe Mode.

Safe Mode loads a minimum of drivers. It allows you to find and fix problems that prevent Windows from loading properly.

Sometimes installing Windows is difficult because of unsuitable BIOS settings. If you keep getting SUWIN error messages (Windows setup) during the Windows installation, then try entering the BIOS and disabling the CPU internal cache. Try to disable the Level 2 (L2) cache if that doesn’t work.

Remember to restore all the BIOS settings back to their former settings following installation.

9 Overheating

Central processing units (CPUs) are usually equipped with fans to keep them cool. If the fan fails or if the CPU gets old it may start to overheat and generate a particular kind of error called a kernel error. This is a common problem in chips that have been overclocked to operate at higher speeds than they are supposed to.

One remedy is to get a bigger better fan and install it on top of the CPU. Specialist cooling fans/heatsinks are available from www.computernerd.com or www.coolit.com

CPU problems can often be fixed by disabling the CPU internal cache in the BIOS. This will make the machine run more slowly, but it should also be more stable.

10 Power supply problems

With all the new construction going on around the country the steady supply of electricity has become disrupted. A power surge or spike can crash a computer as easily as a power cut.

If this has become a nuisance for you then consider buying a uninterrupted power supply (UPS). This will give you a clean power supply when there is electricity, and it will give you a few minutes to perform a controlled shutdown in case of a power cut.

It is a good investment if your data are critical, because a power cut will cause any unsaved data to be lost.

: Happy Computing :

Background Pic in any Folder of XP or Pendrive

Open the Folder in which you want to set a background pic..

Go to
TOOLS >> Folder option >> View >> check Show Hidden files + uncheck HIDE EXTENSION FOR KNOWN FILETYPES + uncheck HIDE PROTECTED OPERATING SYSTEM FILES >> APPLY >> OK

now go to drive or folder in which u wanna add wallpaper.. It is possible to hide all drives or just selected ones.

Open your registry (press win+r and type regedit , hit enter )
goto

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

and find or create the DWORD “NoDrives” there by right clicking on explorer -> NEW -> DWORD value .

The “NoDrives” value uses a 32-bit word to define local and network drive visibility for each logical drive in the computer. The lower 26 bits of the 32-bit word correspond to drive letters A through Z. Drives are visible when set to 0 and hidden when set to 1.

If your not happy working in Hex, add these decimal numbers to hide the drive(s):

A: 1, B: 2, C: 4, D: 8, E: 16, F: 32, G: 64, H: 128, I: 256, J: 512, K: 1024, L: 2048, M: 4096, N: 8192, O: 16384, P: 32768, Q: 65536, R: 131072, S: 262144, T: 524288, U: 1048576, V: 2097152, W: 4194304, X: 8388608, Y: 16777216, Z: 33554432, ALL: 67108863

For example to hide drive A and drive D, you would add 1 (A) + 8 (D) which means the value should be set to “9″.

To disable all the drives set the value to “67108863″.

Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

Note: These drives will still appear in File Manager, to remove File Manager, delete or rename winfile.exe.

Registry Settings

User Key: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer]

System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\
Explorer]

Value Name: NoDrives

Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)

Can I Change the Default Wallpaper Directory in Windows?

Dear MyPowerplace,
I always thought it was ridiculous and dangerous that Windows puts wallpapers mixed in with essential system files in the Windows folder. Is there a way or program to point the
Display Properties -> Desktop
tab to another folder? It would be nice if it then allowed me to organize it with sub-folders.
Sincerely,
Organized Papers

Dear Organized Papers,

Agreed. Now that the majority of people have expanded their wallpaper repertoire beyond the basic wallpapers included in the default Windows install, it would be a handy feature to be able to shift the default wallpaper directory. Never fear though, your new directory is a mere registry edit away! Courtesy of Windows customization blog Tweaking with Sidhant, here is the simple edit you need to free your wallpapers from the
/Windows/
directory:

1. Open regedit and goto:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

2. In right-side pane, you’ll see a string value “WallPaperDir“. Its default value will be:

%SystemRoot%\Web\Wallpaper

You have to change it to your desired wallpaper directory path. Suppose your wallpapers are stored in
E:\Wallpapers
directory, then set the value to
E:\Wallpapers
.

Choose your new directory and you're all set! When you pull up the wallpaper menu again, it will display all the wallpapers in the new folder. It won't show the wallpaper in the subfolders like you requested, but hitting the Browse button starts you in the root wallpaper directory with all the subfolders right there. If you'd like to spend less time fiddling with Windows and more time enjoying your wallpaper collection, you should check out some of the robust wallpaper management programs we've reviewed like John's Background Switcher or Wallpapers from MSN. Happy customizing!

--Sidhant(Admin)

How to convert your Windows XP Home Edition Into Windows XP Professional

I have come across a hacking technique that promises no less than to transform Windows XP Home Edition into Windows XP Professional. Applying the hack will enable all the features specific on Windows XP Professional on a Windows XP Home Edition. The hacking technique works with a copy of Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2.

The following hack has been altered via segments of “xxx” used to conceal the actual information. In its present state, the fragment presented below is no longer a valid hack for transforming Windows XP Home Edition into Windows XP Professional. It is presented here only for informative purposes, as Jason S does not support piracy of any manner.

1. Copy the xxxxx and the xxxxx of the WindowsXP CD to your hard drive.
2. Extract the xxxxxx of your Windows XP CD. You can use xxxxx to do this.
3. Click START-->RUN-->REGEDIT
4. Highlight xxx
5. Click FILE-->xx xx and select the xxx file
This file is located in the xxx folder. Use the one you extracted to your hard drive from your Windows XP CD.
6. Locate the following registry key:
xxx
7. Edit the DEFAULT key and change the following values:
01 to xxx
02 to xxx
8. Change the name to the value xxx to anything.
9. Locate the following registry key:
xxx
Edit the DEFAULT key and change the following values:
01 to xxx
02 to xxx
10. Highlight xxx and select FILE-->xxx

Following the successful accomplishment of the instructions presented above, users have to make a bootable Windows XP CD with the hacked version of the operating system. Everyone who wants to download a file from Megaupload has to wait a certain time before they can start the download. Another restriction is a so called country limit. If the maximum number of downloaders from a specific country has been reached all others from that country will have to wait until the amount of downloaders drops below that figure.

The message that appears reads: “All download slots (number) assigned to your country (name) are in use. Several ways to bypass the country limit exist and I would like to explain two of them and hint to others that can also be used if the need arises. The first one has been around for a while. You do need to download the User Agent Switcher add-on for Firefox or edit the registry in Windows if you are using the Internet Explorer.

Firefox:

Click on Tools, User Agent Switcher and select Options.. Options from the menu. Click on User Agents in the new tab and then on ADD. It is only important to fill out the first two fields. Name the first any way you want, Megaupload for instance. Copy and Paste the following line in the second field.

Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1; Alexa Tool bar)

Internet Explorer:

In Internet Explorer you have to edit the registry. For IE7 and IE6 navigate to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\InternetSettings\User Agent\Post Platform.

Right-Click Post Platform and select New String Value and name it Alexa Toolbar.

Firefox users need to switch to the User Agent that they have created before they click on a download link. Do this by clicking on Tools, User Agent Switcher and choosing the name (megaupload) that you entered during the creation.

The second method would be to enter the megaupload website indirectly by using a service that does not reveal where you are coming from. Copy/paste the three lines below into Notepad and save them as "nocapslock.reg". Use quotes when saving to make sure Notepad does not change it to nocapslock.reg.txt.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=hex:00,00,00,00,00,00,00,00,02,00,00,00,00,00,3a,00,00,00,00,00

Double-click the .REG file to launch it and say Yes when Windows asks you to confirm. After you reboot the system the Caps Lock key is dead. If there are other user accounts on the system be sure they know what you're up to, because this tweak affects everyone.

To restore Caps Lock, go into REGEDIT and delete the Scancode Map value. Or save these three lines as a .REG file and launch as before:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout]
"Scancode Map"=-

There is another option, a setting that will leave Caps Lock enabled but let you know when you've hit it accidentally. Here's how. Click Start and type EASE, then launch the Ease of Access center. Scroll down to the item "Make the keyboard easier to use" and click it. Check the item "Turn on ToggleKeys", click Save, and close the Ease of Access Center. Now you get a beep each time Caps Lock changes state - a higher beep for on and a lower beep for off. - Neil J. You're probably aware that you can view someone else's schedule when you create a meeting request, but you might not know that you can create and work with group schedules without creating meeting requests. That is, when you see an object disappear from a location, it shouldn't still be there next time you look.

One of the worst inconsistencies in Windows is what actually happens to files when they're dragged. To cope with this, follow the following instructions:

To copy a file under any situation, hold the Ctrl key while dragging.

To move a file under any situation, hold the Shift key while dragging .

To choose what happens to dragged files, drag them with the right mouse-button, and a menu will appear when the files are dropped

Complete List of Websites to Watch Tamil Movies Online for FREE

<span style="color: rgb(0, 0, 153); REPT looks like this: =REPT("text"; number_of_times). For instance, REPT("X"; 10) gives you "XXXXXXXXXX". For in-cell bar charts, the trick is to repeat a single bar "|". When formatted in 8 point Arial font, single bars look like bar graphs. Of course, number_of_times can also be substituted with a cell number.

POWERPOINT

Annotate during Presentations
While giving a slide show presentation, right-click in the active window then choose an annotation item from the Pointer Options submenu, such as Felt Tip Pen or Ballpoint Pen.
