Movie Review : Rocket Singh - Salesman of the Year

hey say, ‘Show class, have pride, and display character. If you do, winning takes care of itself.’ And whoever they are, they're often right. Like any other business, sales and service fundamentals are no rocket science. All it needs is honesty, dedication and integrity. But the blitzkrieg of cold calls and unsolicited offers on your phone everyday show that these virtues haves been mothballed for good. Poor Harpreet Singh Bedi (Ranbir Kapoor) who has ‘just’ passed his college hasn’t learnt these tricks of the trade yet. His mark sheet is an embarrassment but that never stopped him from dreaming of an exciting and adventurous career in ‘AYS sales’. He is like an honest professional, who lived in every one of us before those unreasonable deadlines, targets and peer pressure got better of us. Soon, his idea of success begins to clash with the ‘professional’ ways of his colleagues, team leader and the boss.
But Harpreet who has inherited nothing but integrity and a modest scooter from his fuddy-duddy grandpa (Prem Chopra) refuses to give in to this chicanery. Instead he forms his very own, at your service 24x7 Rocket Sales Corp. that works from the AYS premises itself.

With his honesty pep talk he also poaches the ‘best’ AYS talent which includes, his sales shark team leader (Naveen Kaushik), perennial lech techie Giri (D. Santosh), hot customer relations manager Koena (Gauhar Khan) and an office boy Chhote Lal (Mukesh Bhatt) better known as ‘cup-plate’.

Together they restore the idea that business is not just about numbers but it’s about people and when people are happy numbers surge anyway.

As the orders start pouring in and sales sky-rocket, AYS begins to feel the heat. What follows is Harpreet’s conquest over the ideas which AYS boss (Manish Choudhari) considers mainstays of any sales business.

Rocket Singh works fantastically due to Jaideep Sahni’s crisp story and dialogues, Shimit Amin’s taut direction and Ranbir’s pristine performance as he plays the desi Jerry Maguire. As for women, it is Gauhar Khan and not Shazahn Padamsee who steals the limelight. Prem Chopra is delight to watch after a long, long time.

Salim-Sulaiman's music & background score is easy on the ears and never hinders the pace of the story. All in all there is no stopping this Rocket Singh and if you like some uncluttered entertainment you know where to board this flight.

Business and pleasure mixed up by Amrita Rao

Amrita has taken a vacation almost after 3 years and this time it was a pleasure-cum-business trip. Amrita was seen letting her hair down at popular hangout spots, Brittos and Mambos, pampering herself to Aryuvedic spa treatments, riding bikes in the marrow by lanes, dancing to live goan music, and enjoying spicy food by the beach in the shacks at Hotel Cidade. What was most amusing was that many of her fans mistook her sister, Preeta for her due to their uncanny resemblance and asked Preeta for pictures and autographs who maintained a very low profile. Preeta will be foraying into Tollywood with her first Kannada big banner film next year March but unlike Amrita prefers to stay away from the public glare and is also an entertainment columnist. Amrita visited the famous Mangeshi temple to seek divine blessings before she left for Mumbai.

Our sources saw Amrita mingling with directors Vishal Bharadwaj, Madhur Bhandarkar, Amol Palekar and Gurinder Chaddha during IIFI. Wonder what's cooking? We also spotted Aftaab Shivdasani sharing a hearty laugh with her on the disastrous and unorganized fashion show of which she was the show stopper.

Amrita only received her outfits half an hour before the show and used her personal accessories but preferred to stick to her commitment and still walked inspite of receiving smses from the audience not to come on stage.

Speaking of IIFI Amrita was extremely upset about the IIFI organisation this year, as she had to wait almost for an hour for her room reservations to be sorted out followed by no escort and thereafter meaningless events.

Goa is Amrita's favourite holiday destination in India was wishing Madh or Alibaug were also converted into holiday destinations similar to Goa.

It is not clear if they have broken up or not, but good friend Sonam Kapoor is busy blowing the trumpet. According to a tabloid, the girl is messaging all of her close friends, “I told so”, about Ranbir Kapoor - Deepika Padukone's split. Yeh to hona hi tha and she knew it. Sources add that Deepika acted like a possessive girl friend and even used to screen Sonam’s call on Ranbir’s cell.
Sonam was away enjoying adventurous sports but on hearing about the apparent split, she was quick to express herself, or was she venting her disgust.

Akshay Kumar has always come across as a suave, charismatic and charming man, but this time, he adds an extra edge to his look in Shree Ashtavinayak Cine Vision Ltd.’s underwater action thriller ‘BLUE’.

To play this role, the director Anthony D’souza and Akshay Kumar sat down to create a look as never played by him before. Anthony envisioned Akshay sporting an edginess which was in tune with his character of a rich businessman who is ruthless and determined once he sets his sight on something.

That’s when Akshay suggested that they slash his eyebrows!

Needless to say the director was surprised at this unusual suggestion, but after deliberating over it, he decided to go along with it.And the end result was fabulous!

In the film, audiences will get to see Akshay sporting a slashed eyebrow, which lends him a menacing look.

Since Akshay plays a mature character who’s been around the block and is very street-smart and savvy, the director decided to do away with the clichéd French beards and goatees and instead opted for a very distinctive salt and pepper bearded look.

Playing his age, the cut eyebrows combined with the salt and pepper beard gave him just the right killer touch! A very calculating and shrewd look that added a lot of character to his on-screen persona!

In this day and age where actors are extremely particular about their looks and body, here’s one actor who sure doesn’t hesitate to go the extra mile to get the perfect touch!

Amrita Rao said No marriage for the next 10 years

She was rumoured to be dating Shahid Kapoor and then Hurman Baweja. But there is no one "special" in her life right now and she won't think about marriage for the next 10 years, says actress Amrita Rao, who is all set to don a glamorous avatar in Short Kut.

"I'm not getting married for the next 10 years. I don't have anyone special in my life at the moment and my complete focus is on my work," Amrita told over phone from Mumbai.

The 28-year-old entered the Hindi film industry seven years ago with Ab Ke Baras. She then featured in college love story Ishq Vishq, sex comedy Masti, shared screen space with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan in potboiler Main Hoon Na and social drama Vivah. She was also appreciated for her performance in Shyam Benegal's non-commercial Welcome To Sajjanpur.

Now the actress is all set for her first release of the year, Short Kut - The Con Is On, in which she has teamed up with Akshaye Khanna and Arshad Warsi.

Set in Bollywood, the film is about two strugglers - one who makes it big as a superstar (Arshad) after stealing a script and the other (Akshaye) who continues to struggle as a director after his script gets stolen.

"I am playing an actress in the film. Neeraj Vora wanted to highlight the personal life of an actress through my character," Amrita said.

The actress said that her bold avatar in the film was not a conscious decision.

"Everyone has been asking me whether I made a conscious decision to change my look. This is not the case. I haven't sat and decided that I'm bored with one kind of role so give me something else. It's just that I have got an opportunity to do different roles and I have moulded myself to suit the character," she said.

"The same is the case with my character in this film. I wanted to do something different with the styling of this character and so the new look. Nothing more," Amrita added.

Fashion designer Manish Malhotra is the one who has styled Amrita's new look.

Produced by Anil Kapoor, Short Kut... is scheduled for a July 10 release. Amrita says she was thrilled to work with the actor-producer who used to give her pep talks during the shoot.

"Many times he used to give me pep talks, encouraging and motivating me. The whole energy and aura about him is great. He is an incredibly positive personality," the actress said.

Talking about the two male actors in the film, Amrita said: "Akshaye is an actor who comes completely prepared and is a 'one take' actor so you also feel you should give your best.

"Arshad comes up with these impromptu additions to the dialogues which are just so funny. So matching that becomes a little difficult."

Sonia (Ishita Arun), Tina (Tejaswini Kolhapure), Puja (Gauri Karnik) and Om (Rohit Bhatia) are four home-mates in Dubai. They together share a huge apartment and are platonic best friends. While Puja is a host on an FM channel called Radio Hum, Tina is a stage actress, Sonia runs a boutique, and Om works in a corporate set up. While outwardly the four appear to live a carefree and modern lifestyle, there are many chinks in their respective armors. Puja wants to be the host of her own show, which she would like to call “Puja at 8″, but for that she may have to compromise and spend a night with her boss (Harsh Chhaya), at the same time she has promised her conservative India-based parents that she will meet the boy of their choice and settle with him. Tina’s skeleton in the closet contains her alcoholic dad (Om Puri), who is always asking her for money, though Tina would prefer to avoid him and never see him again, she has no option but deal with him whenever he suddenly shows up in their home unannounced; Sonia’s only male client, Rohit (Kiran Janjani) thinks she is hot and wants to marry her, however, Rohit is known as a womanizer and his affairs only last for a few nights. Om was in love with Shama (Dia Mirza) when he was in India, but then she had got married to Pawan. Now Shama and her daughter are in Dubai and both are about to re-kindle their romance for each other, not knowing that Pawan himself is on his way there. As problems arise, they tend to take a toll in their friendship as they start drifting apart. Finally it all boils down to a climax on the New Years’ Day. The film attempts to be a modern day take on friendships amongst today’s youth ala Dil Chahta Hai. While the friendship chemistry amongst the four friends has come out naturally well and some small sequences and lines shared amongst them have come out very identifiable, the overall impact is missing. The comic track between Tejaswini and Ali Asgar also falls completely flat. The culmination of Kiran and Ishita Arun’s story is unintentionally hilarious. Director Ajai Sinha who is a popular name in television circuit as a director who is a master in handling human emotions is let down here with a weak script. He does impress however in handling of some emotional sequences. The production values are fair but costumes especially worn by Gauri and Tejaswini are simply bad. Music by Vishal – Shekhar lacks the zing required for a youngsters flick. Newcomer Rohit Bhatia makes a confident debut. Tejaswini Kolhapure impresses a lot despite having been badly presented. Ishita Arun and Gauri Karnik barely get scope to showcase their acting talents. Dia Mirza in a small but important part is good. Harsh Chhaya is getting type cast in a lecherous boss roles. He has done similar type of parts earlier in Laga Chunari Mein Daag and Its Breaking News. Kiran Janjani fits the part. Himani Shivpuri, Om Puri and Anupam Kher lend able support as usual. While the film may not exactly be worth a visit to the nearest multiplex, it isn’t that bad either and can be caught up on home video on one lazy Sunday afternoon.

Spurned by the Race producers, Abbas-Mustan are planning to revive their long-forgotten shelved project Mr Fraud for Tips’ rival company Astavinayak which stars Bipasha Basu.

Says Bipasha, “If Mr Fraud is revived I’d be happy to give dates.The film was shot in London and the styling was not time bound.”

Not that Bipasha is mourning her absence in Race 2. “I heard even Abbas-Mustan are not doing Race 2. If the original directors are not doing the sequel, who am I? I haven’t been approached for Race 2. That’s fine.

In Bollywood the heroines are never signed for sequels. It’s a tradition. Just check the sequels. The guys get repeated. The girls don’t. It’s a man’s world. I don’t feel like a second citizen for that.

When Raaz 2 was made everyone kept asking why I wasn’t in it. But I never worried about that. No point in crying about it.”

Moving on from Race, Bipasha has just signed her second comedy. Coincidentally comedy reprises the Mr Fraud trio.

Laughs Bipasha, “That’s right Sanjay, Ajay and I are together again in All The Best. This is the one film I’ll enjoyed doing. I had a ball doing No Entry. Intially I had too many inhibitions about Bollywod.

No Entry made me drop those inhibitions. I’m sure Rohit Shetty’s All The Best will make me more uninhibited. …It’s a fun film and I don’t have to always do roles that reflect my personality. Sometimes it’s fun to do fun film.”

Bipasha has signed only one film this year. “I don’t want do any more work than my pace allows me. I don’t want to compete with anybody. I’ve made a niche right from my first film. I’m Bipasha Basu.

I don’t think there’s any replacement for that. I enjoy my work. But there so much more my vocation as an actor than just acting.

I can do stage shows, be a businesswoman, work for social causes. I keep busy 24 by 7. At this stage of my life I don’t need to sit and pine for a role.”

Clash between Chitrangada Singh & Kareena Kapoor

Kareena Kapoor now has to compete with a totally different actress in one of her forthcoming films.

This is simply because the director she’s working with next- Sudhir Mishra has decided to cast Chitrangada in his movie ‘Dhruv’.

Farhan Akhtar is the male lead of the film and director Sudhir Mishra found it interesting enough to team up two different leading ladies- Chitrangada and Kareena.

He’s been saying: “Both, Kareena and Chitrangada are so different in beauty, talent and personality that I’ve conceived two dramatic sequences featuring them. In terms of their look, screen presence and the characters, Kareena and Chitrangada are poles apart.”

And he has solid reasons behind casting Chitrangada.

He’s added: “How do you explain the fact that the Aishwarya Rai Bachchan that you see in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s films is so special? Similarly, I instinctively understand Chitrangada’s skills and personality. I’ve been dying to cast her again after “Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi’.”

And interestingly it’s not Kareena but the arty actress Chitrangada who goes glam in the film.

Reportedly she’s “pulling out all stops and portraying a wheeler-dealer on stilettos with not much on except the perfume and background music.”

He calls her role to be that of an escort and power-broker in politics, a very seductive and provocative role. While Chitrangada is a femme fatale of politics and the underworld, and sports a special look, Kareena is a plain politician.

The shooting begins on September 15 in Rajasthan and the styling of the two ladies is being decided upon.

But it’s not that Sudhir is not paying any attention on Kareena with whom he worked with on “Chameli’.

He’s added: “Kareena is a very special actress. Before I worked with her in “Chameli’ I had heard she was a difficult actress to work with. But she had surrendered completely to my vision, and stood in the rain for hours for the shooting. In this film too I can see her sharing a crackling chemistry with Farhan.”

Kareena or Chitrangada- it will be interesting to se who wins this battle Because no matter how much they deny, a battle is in the pipeline for sure.

Nandu (Bobby) and Shekhar (Pradeep Kharab) are childhood pals who have taken to crime and contract killing at a very young age. They get mentored by a goon Sawtya (Jackie Shroff) during their growing up years.

Now as grown ups, Nandu becomes the most dreaded assassin in town and Shekhar his accomplice who always helps him in getting away from the scene of crime within minutes. Opposition leader Anna Mhatre (Sachin Khedekar) to create a sympathy wave for himself in the forthcoming Vidhan Sabha elections hires Nandu to make a false attack on him.

According to the plan, Nandu aims a shot on Anna’s arms who is addressing a huge political rally but before he shoots, a bullets zips through Anna’s forehead killing him instantly. Now the Police present on the scene see Bobby fleeing and think of him as the assassinator.

When he tries to reach for Shekhar’s car, he sees it getting blown up after it hits a petrol tanker. Chased by cops Nandu enters a train heading towards Punjab. In the train Nandu meets Puran (Akshay Kapoor) who is going back home to Hoshiyaarpur after 18 years since the time he had runaway as a kid.

The talkative Puran narrates in short time everything about his home and shows Nandu his souvenirs from home. Just then Police arrives and in the commotion that ensues mistakenly shoot Puran. Nandu yet again succeeds in fleeing the scene. He heads straight to Puran’s house but is mistaken as Puran by his family.

Unable to reveal the sad truth, Nandu starts staying in their house impersonating Puran. There he encounters Puran’s childhood love Preet (Shriya). He takes it upon himself to solve all the problems that Puran’s family is facing.

But his happiness is short-lived as a quirky but intelligent CBI officer Nandkumar Rane (Nana) hot on trail to nab Anna Mhatre’s assassin lands up in Hoshiyaarpur at Puran’s doorsteps. What follows next forms the rest of the film wherein many secrets get revealed some shocking, some not so shocking

Remake of Telugu super hit Athadu starring Mahesh Babu, Ek- The Power of One mixes the plot of many films together.

The basic plot of the hero responsible for an innocent man’s death going to his family’s house and staying with them without them knowing about his true identity was first explored in Rajesh Khanna starrer Dushman followed by Akshay – Saif starrer Keemat.

Then again, the whole political assassination drama and even the suspense angle of it is ditto similar to Salman Khan – Sushmita Sen starrer Tumko Na Bhool Paayenge. Nana Patekar’s ‘chaaloo’ cop who knows his line of duty is a little naughtier version of Om Puri’s cop character in Rajiv Rai’s Gupt which also incidentally had Bobby being chased for murder.

But the mixed khichdi of a plot works to an extent here. But its more thanks to the technical finesse and twists and turns plotted at regular intervals, superbly shot action scenes and of course Nana Patekar.

But where the film falls down is in the pacing that drops down when Bobby arrives to Puran’s house. The whole joint family thing with all the irritating characters thrown in simply grates on your nerves after initial few minutes.

Too much time is wasted on unnecessary and predictable sub-plots. The film could have well done without 30 minutes that are wasted on all this and it could have ended up as being a nice taut thriller.

Bobby acts well and has efficiently performed his own daring stunts. Shriya Saran doesn’t have much to do but look pretty and make faces at Bobby. Kulbhushan Kharbanda who was a delight to watch in last week’s Aloo Chaat is saddled with the typical Punjabi grandfather’s role.

Zarina Wahab seen after a long time hardly gets any scope. Jaspal Bhatti and Sanjay Mishra both irritate you to death. Priti Bhutani playing Puran’s sister act well and looks good too. Jackie in a small role impresses but Chunkey Pandey gets on your nerves in his special appearance with his fake Punjabi accent.

Raghuvir Yadav as the wily politician is good as usual. The biggest star of the film however is Nana Patekar. The openly flirtatious cop with his crazy one-liners justifying his womanizing is extremely hilarious. In fact you keep waiting for him to arrive whenever his character goes off screen.

The film is aimed at the masses but could have been a better one had some loose end taken care of and the narrative kept tight. But it is not a bad film and may work well for you if you literally have nothing else to do and go in without any expectations.

Bollywood beauty Aishwarya Rai has declined to be immortalised as a Barbie doll, due to her professional commitments.

It was earlier reported that representatives of the 35-year-old actress were in negotiations with Barbie's manufacturer Mattel, who planned to give the iconic doll a Bollywood face. But the deal did not take off.

Yet again on the doll's 50th anniversary, Aishwarya was approached to appear decked up as a celebrity Barbie.

"Mattel was keen to have the actress walk the ramp on Lakme Fashion Week 'Barbie dolled up' in a winning design as Single Likeness Barbie, which would be unveiled and auctioned for a charity of her choice, " said a statement issued by Aishwarya's spokesperson.

However, the actress opted out due to her prior commitments as she did not want to cause inconvenience to the film- makers she was working with by taking time out for the event.

But Ash's loss was Katrina's gain. Kaif is the Indian face of Barbie and she walked the ramp at the ongoing Lakme Fashion Week earlier on Friday morning marking Barbie's 50 birthday.

Mattel Inc's Barbie, on Friday kickstarted Mumbai's premier fashion event--the Lakme India Fashion Week 2009--with designers and models bringing the world's most iconic doll to life in Barbie-like looks and outfits.

After taking the Mercedes-Benz New York Fashion Week by storm last month, Mattel had invited Indian designers to a contest, asking them to create designs for the doll as their muse.

The show called "BarbieAll Dolld Up!" is the style icon's first in India and showcased life-size, Barbie-inspired looks, which were put together by designers like Wendell Rodricks, Neeta Lulla, Sonam Mehta, Shantanu & Nikhil, Jyoti Sharma, Vikram Phadnis and others.

The winning design by Nishka Lulla will be replicated on the actual doll this year itself. "There are plans to replicate the winning design on the doll within six months or so. It will definitely be this year and the doll will be a Katrina Kaif look- alike," a Mattel India spokesperson said.

The show-stopper, Katrina Kaif, was dressed in Lulla's winning design, which was a multi-hued mini dress, with an Indian twist.

Katrina is delighted with the honour, more so because a Barbie doll bearing likeness to the Bollywood actress is in the pipeline and will come as a great surprise to the world sometime soon. “Every girl at some point of time in her childhood has played with a Barbie doll,” admitted Katrina, “and so have I. She makes a sweet, fun and lively companion.”

Enjoying some time in Sin City, Kim Kardashian joined boyfriend Reggie Bush and sister Khloe at the MGM Grand Hotel And Casino for the grand opening of Wet Republic pool on Saturday (March 28).

Also joined by pals Brittany Gastineau and Frankie Delgado, the group grabbed up In n’ Out burger before making their way to the hotel pool for promotional duties.

According to a source on-hand, “All the guys were going crazy while the girls pretty much just laid around, especially Kim who barely got her toes wet. Her and Reggie were having a great time together.”

Voice Search added to BlackBerry by Google Mobile Applications

The latest version of Google Mobile App is already available for download for BlackBerry users. With it, you'll be able to enjoy all the goodies that have only been available to iPhone OS and Android users.

The features that the new Google Mobile app introduces to the BlackBerry owners are voice search and My Location. The first of those allows you to initiate a Google search without ever needing to touch the keyboard. All you need to do is speak the desired search string while holding the Call key - as simple as it gets.

The My Location feature enables users to make searches based on their current location. This means that when you need a place to eat nearby you no longer have to type "restaurant near X", you just type "restaurant" and the Mobile App will give you a list of places in the vicinity.

The Google Mobile app is available to all devices running BlackBerry OS 4.1 or later with the search by voice available on all versions subsequent to 4.2.

The bad news is that the BlackBerry Storm is not yet supported but this should be added in the near future. You can download the Google Mobile App from here.
