That one stinkin’ little question where you end up spending hours scouring the web till your eyes burn. Or for the really brave hearted, go thumbing through book upon book upon book.

Gives me chills just thinking about it…

I know don’t know about you, but I’ve certainly been there… many many many times.

Thankfully, fate has brought you to my teeny tiny corner of the web because I would like to help you avoid all of the frustrations I’ve suffered raising Mastiffs for the past 32 years.

You have the unique opportunity to ask me that one question about Mastiff dogs that brought you here.

But the question is: Just where to you start?

Your first instinct, of course, is to search locally. And that’s not a bad idea. By all means look around for a mastiff locally.But don’t let proximity of breeder be the tipping point in your adopting your new friend. A good dog is definitely worth traveling for.

So even before you look through the ads in your local newspaper, try visiting some dog shows. Those who are showing their dogs at the show may either be breeders or know of good breeders. Go ahead, take your time. These "dog folks" love to talk "mastiff." They’ll be happy to show their passion. And they’ll be more than happy to steer you in the proper direction of a reputable breeder.

Why would they be so nice? First, they love dogs – and obviously mastiffs in particular. And they show mastiffs. They wouldn’t want any second rate or substandard breeder to be perpetuating inferior dogs. So you can count on these folks being pretty candid about the good and bad breeders they’ve encountered. As you talk with these people, you’ll undoubtedly acquire several business cards of different breeders. Follow up on these leads. Telephone them. Chat with them for a while. This conversation doesn’t commit you to even viewing a litter.

What should you be getting from this conversation? You’re getting a feel for the breeder’s" dog ethics" as well as his or her commitment to the mastiff as a breed. Don’t worry that you may not be exactly sure what answers you’re looking for – or even what questions to ask. Right about now you’re going on your intuition. Trust me, you’ll know.

If the breeder is too worried about the monetary value of the dog, then perhaps his commitment and love of the breed isn’t quite strong enough. But if you can’t stop the breeder from bragging about the bloodline, or how "adorable" or smart or "picture perfect" his pups are . . . well, you might have hit upon a high-quality breeder. You’ll also have a sense of his reputation, by the way he allays your fears or doubts about your new venture.

Make as many phone calls as is necessary. This is not a decision to be made casually. When you do finally find one with whom you’re comfortable, who either has a litter available or whose dog is expecting, make an appointment with him. Be prepared though. He’ll probably ask you at least as many questions as you plan on asking him. That’s a dead giveaway that he’s conscientious and love his mastiffs – he’ll interrogate you (or it’ll at least seem that way!)

Here though are a few tips in the way you may want to steer the conversation. Of course you’ll want to ask how long he’s been a breeder. Ask why he owns them. Are his mastiffs show dogs or house pets? Don’t be afraid to ask about the health issues associated with the breed. Every breed has some distinguishing health concerns. It’s always best to know what the issues are before adopting. Ask the breeder what the mastiff’s most important single characteristic is. This question alone gives you quite a bit of insight into his reputation and his thinking.

Don’t be offended by the number of questions the breeder asks you – or even by the nature of some them. He’s asking because he just cares that much for his mastiffs – and that’s always a good sign.

As you narrow your choices in the way of possible breeders, don’t narrow it to only one. Make a list of several and then prioritize that list by your initial preferences. You may have to wait until other potential owners have made their adoption selections. After all, it’s a first-come, first-serve world in dog breeding. Once you find the breeder – and "mom dog" – of your choice, you’re probably be placed on a waiting list for the babies. While this could be irritating, especially since you want your new puppy NOW, view this as a good thing. This is definitely a signal that you’ve chosen a quality breeder. If you believe that the wait involved is excessive – and only you can decide that – you can always decide to adopt from your second choice of mastiff breeders.

Finally, you get that call you’ve been waiting for. The babies are ready for viewing. By the time you get a chance to view your potential new baby, he’ll probably be eight to ten weeks old. At this age, the puppies will easily display their various personalities. You’ll also be able to see how these little guys (relatively speaking) interact with you and your family.

Oh, yes, by all means take the entire family to this viewing session. It’s absolutely essential right from the start that each member of your family has a chance to participate in this decision.

The puppy you ultimate choose reflects, by the way, why exactly you want a mastiff to begin with. If you have plans on showing him at dog shows or you plan on breeding yourself, then you definitely want a dog who physically meets all the requirements of the breed.

On the other hand, if you want a dog who is going to be a loyal family pet, then it’s not as important that the dog meets all the physical criteria of the breed. You’re looking for the most lovable pup in the litter.

Now that you’ve made your decision, all that’s left is making the final arrangements on the price, and eventually taking him home with you. Be aware that depending on your pup’s age, you may not take him home on that visit. No, don’t be too disappointed. After all, you’ve waited this long, haven’t you? Besides, the delay gives you time to get the house prepared for him.

Oh, by the way – have a great time with your new "baby"!

This large dog was bred originally to protect the plantations of Brazil. Not surprisingly, the ancestors of this dog included Bloodhounds, Mastiffs and bulldogs of European origin. The ancestors of this dog were brought to South America by the Conquistadors.

The result of this breeding is a dog who possesses the incredible scenting ability of the Bloodhound and the amazing fearless power of a mastiff. And this combination made the Brazilian Mastiff suited him well in defense of the cattle ranches of the Minas Gerais region. Not only was he able to keep the cattle rustlers away, but he also kept the steer safe from the wild jaguars.

The history of the Brazilian Mastiff though also includes the use of them on hunting trips. These dogs were used to track, attack and then hold the intended prey until his owner arrived. In fact, the name Fila comes from Portuguese for "to hold." Interestingly, the Brazilian Mastiff, at one point in the history of the breed and the country, was used to track and capture runaway slaves.

The leg and spine joints of the Brazilian Mastiff demonstrate perfectly what made this dog such a great tracking dog. The joints are loose. This allows the dog to change his route extremely quickly – even if he’s traveling at a full-blown gallop.

This dog has a unique characteristic for which it is known. It is probably the only breed that was purposely selected for its actual dislike of strangers. And to this day, the trait definitely shows. In fact, temperament tests are run during championships. The tests include the ability to attack without being instructed, to remain self-confident during a shooting test as well as to overtly display their dislike and suspicion of people they don’t know.

Ironically, the standard for this breed during a dog show specifically states that the Brazilian Mastiff should not "allow the judge [a stranger] to touch it." Furthermore, the standard explains that should the dog attack the judge, this action "must be considered a fault, but only a confirmation of its temperament." As fierce as they can be with strangers, the Brazilian Mastiffs are gentle with their own families. As with other types of Mastiffs they are tender and affectionate with the family they are charged to protect. And, of course, the members of this breed are loyal to their owners as well.

And like his cousins, the English Mastiff and others, he is a large dog. He stands between 27 to nearly 30 inches tall at the shoulder. His weight is no less than 100 pounds. While females are slightly smaller, they are still quite big as well. The female Brazilian Mastiff weighs approximately 90 pounds, with a height that ranges between 24 to nearly 28 inches.

The coat of the Brazilian Mastiff is short and smooth. Colors include solid yellow, reddish tan, as well as black and brindled colors. There are tons of mastiff pictures available on the net.

If the Brazilian Mastiff has won your heart and you’re considering owning one – beware. While the Mastiff as a general breed is a ferocious guard dog ,the Brazilian Mastiff was bred to go one step further to actually distrust and dislike stranger. This means he needs more supervision and understanding than your average dog.

But don’t let that deter you from considering ownership of this most exceptional canine. His history may be short, but he possesses an abundance of loyalty and love.

In fact, the breed as we know it today is only a little over 40 years old. The breed exists today thanks to the dedication of two american mastiff breeders. In the 1960s, John Swinford, an American veterinarian, decided to breed the "ultimate" guardian dog. He consistently crossed a male American Pit bull Terrier with a large, strong Neapolitan Mastiff female. Anther american mastiff breeder, by the name of Joe Lucero also had a hand in the evolution of this breed. He specifically refers to his dogs as American Bandog Mastiffs.

While you may find variations of this breed, those developed by Swinford and Lucero produce the most stable canines. They are known for their even temperament as well as their outstanding qualities as a guardian dog.

You’ll immediately recognize the American Bandog Mastiff by his prominent muscles as well as the "athletic" look he carries with him. Most of the individual dogs in this breed are black brindle, but there are some who are black, blue, red as well as tawny.

A surprising characteristic is the docility of the dog. For a dog who is bred for protection, he has a quiet, confident air about him (perhaps he realizes that he weighs in between 100 and 140 pounds or 45 to 63 kg!)

But more than this, the American Bandog Mastiff is a highly intelligent dog. And Dr. Swinford were he alive today, would be pleased to know that this canine does, indeed, make an excellent guard dog. The breed as a whole though does possess one small disadvantage when it comes to this task: they’re reluctant to bark. It’s common for dogs to bark a warning, not only for their owners to know someone is around, but also to warn the intruder not to continue his journey much farther.

They also simply crave attention. As a loyal friend, they hate to be left alone. And if you ever doubt that fact, just ask the neighbors of a mastiff owner. They could probably attest to the fact that the Bandog Mastiff howls just about the entire time the owner was away from home.

Typical of the breeds from which they come, this giants want nothing more than to be in the company of their owners, to please them, and, of course, to protect them. And the Bandog can indeed get along with other household pets, if, that is, they have been raised from "puppyhood" with them. In fact, they’ll even get long with kittens and cats. If they haven’t been socialized with an individual animal though, they can be aggressive.

Considering their size, you may believe that the members of this breed would find it fairly uncomfortable confined to living in an apartment. However, they’ll be fine as long as you find the time to exercise them regularly. Because make no mistake about it, they do need their exercise!

And don’t worry about grooming these dogs. They are easy to take care of. When compared to other dog breeds, the American Bandog Mastiff comes in as an "average shedder." As long as you brush him regularly, removing the dead hair, you should have no problems.

Without a doubt, every boarding kennel has a unique personality. Not every kennel suits every dog owner. As an owner of a mastiff, you may have to search a little more than the average dog owner for one that you – and your dog – like.

It’s just not realistic to think that your guarding breed will do anything but continue guarding while he’s being boarded. That means – considering the number of different people as well as dogs your Mastiff encounters in this situation – this situation may be stressful for him. Obviously, your Mastiff would prefer not to be placed in this situation where he feels he needs to continually guard his new territory.

This doesn’t even take into account that the fact that your loyal friend will also miss you terribly. Don’t be surprised if your Mastiff shows signs of separation anxiety. Of course you need to make sure that the kennel will be able to meet the need of dogs mastiff.

Only you can decide if you Mastiff will "survive" the kennel experience while you’re gone. You can boost the odds that your pet will board well by choosing your kennel very carefully.

Ask before you make arrangements if the staff has experience boarding Mastiffs. If the staff has never boarded one of these very special dogs before, you need to keep looking. When you find one who knows about Mastiffs, then it’s time to visit it.

The kennel, physically, should not only be clean, but it should smell clean as well. The bedding the dogs use should also be clean and look "comfy" for your dog. All the sleeping areas should be dry as well as free from drafts.

Be sure that your Mastiff has access to an outside exercise area during the day. He should also have access to water at all times.

Don’t be afraid to ask about the feeding schedule your dog will be on. It should, ideally, stay as close to his home schedule as possible.

In addition to this, find out how much the staff knows about their boarders. Not only that, but feel them out about how much they know about dogs in general. While you don’t expect them to be experts, the staff should have a love of dogs and some type of knowledge in this area.

If you start boarding your Mastiff while he’s young – even as young as six months – then he’ll generally become acclimated to the environment there. And it’s best to use the same kennel every time. Not only will the staff get to know your dog better, your Mastiff won’t feel as if the employees are "strangers". He’ll feel less like he has to "guard" his territory constantly.

One final note: consider a "trial" boarding. Have your Mastiff spend a day or so at the kennel when you’re not out of town. That way if it turns out not to work, you can pick him out. Then again, the chances are that the arrangement will work. So that when you do go out of town, you won’t have to worry needlessly.

You know your mastiff needs extra attention. That’s just the way the breed is. And it’s partially why you love him so. Don’t hesitate to put extra time and energy into your search for a kennel that knows the special character traits of the Mastiff and is willing to give him the time and energy he needs.

The English Mastiff is a powerfully built canine with a body that can only be described as "massive." He enjoys the distinction as being "the heaviest dog in the world." In fact the mastiff probably gets his name from the Anglo-Saxon word for powerful – "masty." The English Mastiff is descended from both the ancient breeds, the Alaunt as well as the Molosser and he is recognized as the oldest British breed of dog (and sometimes he acts as if he knows this!)

Not surprisingly this huge dog was used – as early as the sixth century BC – for various "fighting" purposes. He was indispensible in many of the blood sports that have become legendary, including bear-baiting, bull-baiting, lion-baiting (believe it or not!) as well as dog fighting.

The English Mastiff breed is an incredible intermingling of grandeur, dignity and courage. He is perhaps to those who don’t fully understand the breed, the ultimate paradox of dogs. Loyal, calm, affectionate and loving toward his family, he is a first-class guardian as well, ferocious, tenacious and fearless when the need arises. As stunning evidence of this, an English Mastiff instinctually positions himself between his owner and a stranger when an unknown person approaches the family’s "territory."

Should the approaching stranger not give the dog his due, the Mastiff may take swift, immediate defensive action. And now you see why, he could be ranked up there with the top ten guard dogs of all time!

For all his fierceness, the English Mastiff is incredibly gentle with children.

The English Mastiff is indeed an imposing figure of a canine. The average Mastiff stands at about 30 inches at the shoulder for males and only a little shorter – 27.5 inches – for females. A male English Mastiff can tip the scale between 160 and 230 pounds. The female is not far behind, though, weighing in between 140 and 190 pounds or more!

As with any breed of dog, the English Mastiff has its share of health issues. These include hip dysplasia and bloating. The breed is also prone to obesity. You can manage both the bloating and the weight by feeding your dog two or three small meals a day. As loved as this dog is, there are still plenty of english mastiff rescues.

The English Mastiff also possesses a higher incidence of bone cancer than some other breeds of dog. They are also one of the breeds that may be prone to developing kidney stones.

A healthy English Mastiff lives to be between nine and 11 years old. He demands a good diet as well as plenty of exercise – as you can well imagine. But you may have to coax him to exercise. Just like his human owner, he’s prone to enjoying "the good life." You may find that he’s quite comfortably lounging in the living room rather than running the track outside or walking through the park with you.

Don’t forget to brush your English Mastiff daily. Dust, dead hair as well as other "things" tend to "hide" in his coat until you remove them. And while you might not be able to see them, after they’ve been on him a while, the accumulation – believe it or not – actually begins to smell. Another advantage to daily brushing involves skin problems. The chances of developing any concerns dealing with the Mastiff’s skin are far less if you make it a habit to brush him regularly.

Instead of using a regular brush on the Mastiff, though, consider using a "dog-glove." This incredible device was developed expressly for short hair dogs like the Mastiff. Both you and he will find this enjoyable – and it’ll be a great "bonding" experience for the two of you as well.
