I am happy to say I completed my first river race yesterday and it was a real challenge. My friend Scott was also doing it for the first time and we finished under three hours but it was a pretty demanding event. There was no slacking and I felt like I’d run a marathon after I had finished. The biggest difficulty was getting water out of the boat. We had to stop three times to turn the boat over. The difference in performance without the water was very considerable. There were some really nice stretches on the river where I felt I was a long way from civilization.

I am told that the water was exceptionally low this year due to the fact that someone pulled out the boards retaining the water and spilling a great deal on Saturday. That was a mean spirited act considering this is such a wonderful community event. It was particularly nice to see boats with parent/child teams- except when they were passing me! I would like to thank the people who worked so hard to put this thing together. Everything is becoming so corporate nowadays and it is so refreshing to see something as real as the boat race continue to prosper.

I had to go to the technology park in East Falmouth yesterday and I saw that they are installing an industrial-sized wind turbine there. The first section was in the ground already and they were getting ready to hoist the middle section while the last piece waited on a giant trailer. We will be seeing that on the horizon once it’s in place and this is only the beginning. I believe the whole Cape shore visible from our side of Buzzard’s Bay will be festooned with turbines in the near future.

Neither space nor time permitted a full accounting in today’s newspaper of all that happened at town meeting last night. I was barely able to get the result of the vote on the sewer extension into the print edition. A couple of minutes later and it would not have made it. While the sewer vote was controversial and I am sure there are some people today who view the future with dread, the thing that also struck me was the finance committee report delivered by Dick Gamache on the state of the town’s finances. Health care the town rose by 19 percent this year and pensions by 15 percent. It’s the same in other towns and this is simply not sustainable. I don’t know what the solution is however.

The town web site has Shining Tides open to shellfishing to the East of Reservation Rd. I was down there yesterday and there is an orange sign proclaiming that ALL shellfish beds are closed and that is incorrect and overdue for removal. I spent an hour in the water and came out with a couple of dozen quahogs, a poor return. I missed the best of the tide admittedly but neverthless the catch is not what it was down there.

There is another hearing on the oyster project in Brandt Island Cove tomorrow night at Center School and, as I understand it, the proposal has been modified to move the site further back into the cove to make it less obtrusive.

And in case you were wondering… the land being cleared off Rt. 6 just past the Bay Club is for the new home of Yard Boss
