–Skip this section if you are aware of Google Secure Search change–
Google forcing logged-in users to use secure search should not be news to you, but here is the link anyways – Making search more secure. Additionally by now you should have read about how Google Analytics is going to be treating secure searches, but here is the link anayways – Making search more secure: Accessing search query data in Google Analytics
– Start here if you are aware of Google Secure Search change —

Bummer, now what?

As SEOs we just happen to work in an environment that forces us to adapt on a fairly consistent basis. Google has delivered another stiff left jab that we HAVE TO roll with because it is just outside of our control. Now that you have come to terms with the change (hopefully) and know that it is not going anywhere, what are you going to do about it? Well, the only thing you can do… dig into your analytics, find out where you can find secure search data, monitor it and account for it.

So, below you will find a variety of popular analytics platforms and how you will (or will not) be able to account for this new segment of search traffic.

Here are some jump to links to help you out:
Google Analytics
Omniture
Coremetrics
Webtrends
Yahoo Web Analytics
Clicky
Woopra
Piwik

Google Analytics

The good news is Google Analytics was prepared for this change (shocker! I wonder why?). So, if you are using Google Analytics you can easily find all the traffic coming from logged-in users through secure search neatly rolled up into a new universal token in the Organic Search Traffic report called “(not provided)”. It cleanly allows you to see the impact of secure search starting October 18th and when you filter the Organic Search Traffic report by (not provided) you should see something like this -

Now for the other analytics platforms that don’t start with Google…

Adobe – Omniture

If you are using Omniture as your web analytics platform the good new is you will be able to find secure search data but you have to math and dig a bit deeper. Even better, Omniture has put together instructions on how to find the data so here you go:

1. Run the Traffic Sources > Referrers report using the Instance metric

2. Select the current day in the date selector

3. Filter the report to show referrers from major search engines by adding this to the search box: google.com/search OR google.com/url OR search.yahoo.com OR bing.com.
Some tips:
– Add non-US domain endings, like google.co.uk, where appropriate
– Don’t forget to capitalize the OR operator
– In SiteCatalyst 14, this search may take a few minutes

4. Note the total in the bottom-right corner of the page (I drop it into Excel, but your memory may be better than mine)

5. Filter the report to encrypted search referrers by searching for google.com/url AND q=& (again, capitalization matters for the AND operator)

6. Divide the second total by the first to estimate the change to total search traffic caused by encrypted search.

Find these instructions on the Omniture blog here – The Impact of Google Encrypted Search

Also, the update will impact a few of the standard reports in Omniture like:
– Referrer Types: Search Engine traffic will decrease in favor of traffic for “Other Web Sites”
– Search Keywords (All, Paid and Natural): Metrics associated with keywords will decrease in favor of “None.”
– Search Engines (All, Paid and Natural): Metrics associated with Google search engines will decrease in favor of “None.”

Bummer.

IBM Coremetrics

The teams over at IBM also took the time to put together a blog post about the change, you can read it here – Google Making Search More Secure. But, let me summarize it for you…

1: “We applaud Google for wanting to make the user experience safer.” – direct quote (I almost threw up, no wait… I did)
2: “Unfortunately, no work around has been provided by Google; therefore, this is a matter that will impact all vendors that leverage this traditionally vital information.” – direct quote (Bummer. Again.)
3: “They totally just f**ked us!” – direct quote (j/k, but I wish they had said this, right?)

Looks like the Coremetrics and Unica teams are under the gun a bit to figure out how their analytics platform is going handle this source of traffic (or ever will) and display in a meaningful manner. For the time being it looks like Coremetrics users might be SOL with IBM saying, “you will likely see a substantial increase in no search results or “None.””

Webtrends

Webtrends, also on top of the analytics game, prepared a blog post on the secure search change, you can read it here – Our Response to Google’s Query String Security Announcement. However, their post is even less helpful than Coremetrics’ for the users of their analytics platform with only telling users that, “Webtrends products will continue to operate as expected, with affected traffic appearing as Google referred but without any search results”. They also go on to say that they “will provide an update in the near term that will clearly identify those searches that had the terms stripped out”.

Webtrends also did a bit of brown-nosing by saying, “We applaud the importance Google places on security and privacy”.

So hold tight Webtrends users something will eventually be coming down the pipeline from the sounds of it.

Yahoo! Web Analytics

No blog post from the Yahoo! Web Analytics team on the impact of the secure search change in Google on data in their platform. If anyone is using Yahoo! or someone from the Yahoo! team is reading this contact me.

Clicky

Since there was no publicly available comments from Clicky on the topic, I took the initiative and emailed them about how their platform would handle the change and here is what I heard back:

“When Google started doing the Ajax thing about 2 years ago, this had a similar effect although on a much smaller scale. We could still detect they were coming from Google, so that was reported – the search term would just be blank for that visitor because we couldn’t access it. This new change is just like that, but times a billion. It will affect the majority of searches, I’m guessing (but not all, since it only applies to logged in users).

There is no workaround.”

So, sounds like business as usual at Clicky where the new Google secure search data will be recorded that same way as Ajax data.

Woopra

No blog post from the Woopra team on the impact of the secure search change in Google on data in their platform. If anyone is using Woopra or someone from the Woopra team is reading this contact me.

Piwik

Again, taking the initiative here – I emailed some of the team at Piwik to see how they were going to handle the change by Google. I got a response stating that there would be a fix in the next release, check out the ticket – Google search SSL by default for default users cause keyword not to be tracked

So, for Piwik users keep eye out for the next release as you will start seeing Google secure search traffic showing up as “keyword not provided” in your reports.

Great job Piwik!

The images and names inside red boxes (added by me) are links to Amy-Mae’s and Danny’s Google Plus Profiles. Very interesting…

Anyone Else Getting These?

Let me know in the comments or on Twitter if you are seeing this too.

Update

Google has put together a great Authorship help page for webmasters and bloggers so could potentially start to see your face showing up in the SERPs as the author of your posts. This is not exclusive to just your individual blog but can be enabled on multi-author sites that either host their own author pages or not. This is good stuff! (technical jargon I know..)

Very early this morning on Google’s Code blog they made an announcement of a new service they will begin to offer called Page Speed Service.

Google says, “Page Speed Service is an online service that automatically speeds up loading of your web pages… Page Speed Service fetches content from your servers, rewrites your pages by applying web performance best practices, and serves them to end users via Google’s servers across the globe.”

What Google is really saying here is, “Most Webmasters and Developers don’t know how to do their jobs, we get bombarded by these idiots on a daily basis with mundane questions about improving their website’s load time (even though we have spelled everything out for you). So, we’ve had enough and just let us f***ing do it for you.”

Idiotproofing in 2 Steps

The thing that website owners are going to love about the service is that it is a two step process.

You sign up and provide Google with your serving and reference domains.

You send traffic to Page Speed Service by pointing your DNS CNAME entry to ghs.google.com.

Voilà you are now all set to use the Page Speed Service.

But, I am already optimized for SPEED?

So, as a good developer and webmaster you have already been working your ass off to configure your server correctly, minimize code, compress images, etc, etc, etc. Good for you but how good of a job have you done? Google wants to put you to the test at WebPageTest.org. Here you can compare your current site time against a Google Page Speed Service time [I hear egos popping already]. Mine isn’t big enough to not run it so I did (DSL/Virginia Config.) and here are the results:

Homepage – http://www.webpagetest.org/result/110728_36_0c9330c85fda217977da67862ab358df/

So, not a TON of savings on the Homepage. Google was able to trim me down from 3.7 to 3.2 seconds for a first time load but they improved the start to render & repeat visit to less than 2 seconds (which is nice!). Unlike the Homepage both of the other runs had improvements on the start to render for repeat visit and saw improvements across the other metrics as well.

I am currently running the Google Analytics Site Speed tracking and I can tell you on average the site loads at about 7 seconds. So, if Google Page Speed Service can get that average to drop to 4 – 5 seconds that is a nice chunk of time saved.

In Conclusion

It simple and idiotproof – update your DNS and your site loads faster. Done.

Anyone test a site that saw drops from like 10+ seconds down to like 4, 5 or 6? Share the link below (I’ll approve your comment).

Two days ago I wrote about the extinction of PR10 sites and specifically talked about the Google downgrade from PR10 to PR9. I said that Google was unable to keep pace with social networking site Facebook because Google does not give websites a reason to link to them.

Well, yesterday Google launched Google Plus and this is exactly what Google needs to compete with Facebook.

Facebook heralded wild success as a person-to-person social networking site but achieved a meteoric rise in recent years because they allowed business, websites, groups and organization to have their own pages allowing them to engage with the people who were fans.

Google Plus is not quite where it needs to be to be able to achieve mass adoption by businesses but they are on their way.

How will they be able to do that? By reaching outside the Googlesphere of products and sites and achieve presence on everyone else’s websites the same way that Facebook did, with badges.

Go to just about any website and you will see a nice little Facebook icon or Like Us badge telling visitors that they can connect on Facebook with the business, etc. and they will get something in return (discounts, solutions to issues, etc.).

<del datetime="2011-07-05T15:51:40+00:00">In a similar fashion, I have already mocked-up a “Circle Me on Google Plus” badge (I am not a graphic designer but check it out in my right sidebar).</del> UPDATE: Just found a set of icons for Google Plus that could be used as badges here – http://www.box.net/shared/b9gm7x3codas575dxqcc. The badge links off to my Google Plus profile and if you are logged into Google Plus you will see a red button in the upper right corner labeled “Add to Circles” that looks like this:

What this does is allows people to create Circles of their favorite products and monitor that stream for information about deals, new products without the interference of your friend’s new puppy photos and posts about who drank too much last night.

So, as much as Google may want to hang there hats high on the achievement of Google Plus, they should get on these badges ASAP as well as begin to role out profiles that are geared toward businesses to begin the adoption of these badges outside of the SOSG (Seriously Obsessed Search Geek) community.

Also, if anyone much more skilled with design wants to create some Google Plus badges feel free to pimp them in the comments below. I know I could use one that looks awesome!

In the latest PageRank update all I could envision is Google Engineers running around saying, [bonk] “Not the PR10 site!” [bonk] “Not the PR10 site!”…

What was already an exceptionally limited group of sites holding the distinction of PR10, the badge has now been stripped from a number of the most authoritative sites on the Web. Search Engine Genie had a recent list of PR10 sites, that dates back to January 2011, that I clicked through to see whom of the creme-de-la-creme was still on top. Only 8 of the sites listed still maintained there PR10 status:

Add This

Adobe Flash Player Download

Facebook

United States Department of Health and Human Services

U.S. Government’s Official Web Portal

The two most notably dropped were Google and CNN and the two that maintained their PR10 status which attracted my attention are Facebook and AddThis.

The Google Downgrade and How Facebook Forges On

As the link graph of the entire web grows the link graph of your website needs to grow with it. Remaining stagnant or only marginally growing is not winning according to the PageRank algorithm.

More and more sites are coming online every minute of every day and with these sites there are more and more links being added to the Web. When a site is redesigned, edited or launched the most common outbound links added are social links. These links are one of two things, profile links to Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter and YouTube or social sharing links through services like AddThis. No one goes, “Oh we HAVE TO link to Google for our users and customers” because there is in no benefit to linking to Google for them. However, everyone says “We have to have a Facebook profile and link to it so we can engage with our customers”, that is how Facebook maintains their PR10 status.

Google has no one to blame except themselves for being downgraded from PR10 to PR9. Google has just been unable to keep up with the rapid growth that Facebook achieved with garnering links from, well, just about every website on the Web. A clear dominating force in the Social Web Era, Facebook is leading the pack and Google is struggling to even keep pace (from miles behind) but not for a lack of trying. Google is the king of launch and fail but all of this “spinning of the wheels” is getting them no where to remain competitive.

The direction that Google is heading, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them drop to a PR8. [gasp]

You remember how everyone went crazy for the Google Chromebook last year. People waited and waited for a beta model to test, some got one and some didn’t.

Well, now you can buy a Chromebook before they go on sale June 15th at the Gilt Groupe. I just received this email invitation from The Chrome Team at Google:

Looks like a limited supply of Chromebooks have been pre-allocated to Gilt Groupe for sale.

Here is the Gilt Groupe sale page:

Here is what the details of the sale are:

Google’s primary goal is to deliver search users the best possible answers to any query. Often times this requires them to include enhanced features like maps, video, images, news, etc. Now, lets add “Best Guess” to the list of enhancements.

The SERPs are in fact Google’s best guesses to answer the query that you have entered and now, included in those results is Google’s singular best guess. Here is what it looks like:

Clean, simple, and nothing fancy about it, just the answer that Google thinks is the best guess answer to your query based on their sources. So, lets check out those sources:

3 sources from Wikipedia
3 sources from NYTimes.com
1 source from WordPress.com

All 7 of these sources are pulled from the first page of results. It’s obvious why Wikipedia is there (they are always there), the same goes for NYTimes.com as it is a brand related search but what is that WordPress resource? Turns out, it is a Liverpool FC fan site that happened to blog about the LFC now being part owned by NYT. Not your most trusted resource to list but none-the-less a resource that had it right.

It looks like Google Best Guess is designed to mine the sources on the first page of results and when enough sources, looks to be 7 is the magic number, “say the same thing” Google will generate their best guess to save the user the time of clicking on each site.

So while trying to find more examples for everyone I found that Google Best Guess consistant shows up on Celebrity marriage queries like “so-and-so is married to” or “who is married to so-and-so”. Well, Best Guess needs a little more work…

Looks like Bruce and Ashton are still duking it out over Demi, sorry Emma. But the good news is, there is a feedback button next to the Best Guess result and you can let Google know when they got it right or wrong.

Anyone else seeing the Google Best Guess results and have example queries they want to share?

Cheap Hosting ≠ Speed

So, over the past couple years I have been putting up with some less than stellar hosting service. I picked it about 4 years ago because it was super cheap and gave me 8 unique IPs. However,in the past couple years it has just gone down hill. I would consistently get page load fails while editing posts and trying to develop on my other sites & tools. My patience was being tested on a daily basis and I just had enough.

So, I switched this past weekend. I put out some feelers looking for options last week, weighed the options and pulled the trigger based on a recommendation from a guy who I know for a fact gets significant amounts of traffic to his site and has exceptional performance from my perspective.

Yes, my motivation behind the move was performance based. I made my initial choice based on price but this time I decided to go with a company that has proven itself to be one of the best. It was a little more expensive but, even though it has been only two days, I am extremely pleased with what I have seen happening already.

The Final Straw

The final straw that really broke the hosting service’s back was when I enabled Site Speed tracking in Google Analytics. In Google’s blog post they waive a very nice avg. page load time of 3.45 seconds across 2,200+ samples. I may have put up with my old hosting’s bits of downtime if my site was fast, but it wasn’t even f’in close. Now, I have no where near the sampling that Google was able to produce but my avg. page load time was a whopping 11.45 seconds on the old host. Just check out this screenshot:

My highest traffic post had an average load time of 16.46 seconds, what a terrible experience for my visitors.

Since the Switch

The results of the switch were unbelievable. Honestly, I didn’t have a number expectation in my head that I was hoping or shooting for but what I saw happen was completely shocking! Also, it has only been one day with only 3 samples but here is what happened, my new average page load time was 2.24 seconds! Here is the screenshot (only my homepage has been sampled so far):

Holy shit, right?! Could have never guessed that would have been the results.

Who’d I Switch To?

Now for the big reveal… the company that I switched to for my new hosting was none other than HostGator (non-aff). For anyone who has ever shopped around for hosting or is in general aware of hosting companies, HostGator is one of the big dawgs of the marketplace. Even though they ended up being only marginally more expensive than my previous host I think it was well worth the slight increase in doe.

So, now I am officially a HostGator fanboy.

What I am Recommending

Now, I am not saying run out and switch all your sites to HostGator right now. But, what I am hoping you take away from this is that, if you have done the work on-site (e.g. you have done as many of the recommendations by Google & Yahoo! speed tools) and your site is still slow, it isn’t your fault. It is likely your hosting company is the one that is dragging you down and then it may be time to consider a switch.

If you haven’t heard already, Google has launched a new social feature integrated into the SERPs called +1. (get out from under your rock already! geesh)

I am not going to bore you with another “what is +1″ post because you can already get that here.

Rather, I would like to explore thoughts on how Google will likely handle sites that it identifies as trying to scam the +1 and manipulate votes.

Monitoring +1

Google is going to be tracking every +1 cast. By this I mean, they will be tracking where the +1 votes come from at many levels like Google Profile, IP, Geo-location and other unique identifiers. Google will likely process all this data and if they notice patterns, like constant votes from specific unique identifiers, they will take action against those +1s.

Types of Actions

Like links, and just because of what it is, +1 will likely be scammed to the dickens. But how will Google combat this?

Profile Removal

If Google thinks that your profile is part of a network of profiles created to inflate +1 votes, I would not put it past them to just shut down your profile.

This shutdown may not happen right away because like a good sting operation they will likely be collecting data on that profile as well as many others to large profile removal processes all at once (ala Twitter style back in the day).

+1 Devaluation

Google can’t always determine the root of all scamming practices so they often go with a devaluation approach. As we are told by Google, this is something that they already do for scammy/spammy links. It is likely that they will adapt this technology to be able to sniff out and devalue +1 scammers.

Bot Captchas

You know when you are flying through the SERPs, entering query after query rather quickly and Google all of sudden says “Hey! We think you are some kinda robot, fill out this captcha to prove to us you are not. Thanks!”. Well, Google could easily take this rapid querying detection tool and again adapt to detect rapid +1 on a given profile or other unique identifier to stop bots.

The Unlikely

It is unlikely that Google will actually serve up penalties to the destination sites of the +1 votes and if they do it will be far and few between. They will need some pretty solid evidence that a site owner is the one really behind the manipulate votes.

A Waste

Like with link spamming tactics that are easily uncovered by Google, +1 scamming and vote inflation will be just be a waste of time and dollars for anyone who thinks that it will help them to achieve better results in the SERPs. It may take time but Google most always gets their guy.

What’d I Miss?

What do you think? Any other ways in which Google will be able to sniff out and squash the scammers? Leave a comment.

This may not be new to you but it was a new one to me.

I was just going through the spam filter on my blog when I came across a comment that started to get me a little angry. It was insulting and I think it would get a rouse out of just about anyone. However, I think this comment was counting on exactly that emotional decision to help and get the comment approved on my site.

The Comment

Wow! I mean just WOW!

Someone seriously had it out to berate, insult and just be downright mean in that comment. So, you can see why I was getting a little worked up over it. Some serious Bitchassness going on in that comment

The Author

Triple WOW. This comment wasn’t from a human who was hatin’ on me it was clearly from a spammer. All I had to do is check out the name and URL, no rocket science necessary.

Comment Spammers New Tactic

Like everyone who runs a blog you get about a dozen or more of the spam comments praising your glorious site to the high heavens for its complete awesomeness.

Now, it looks like the spammers are taking to a new tactic. Instead of playing nicely and trying to feed your ego, they are getting a little toothy, trying to take a bite out of you, and get there comments approved out of sheer emotional reaction to negativity.

In all honesty, the comment text had me. I was ready to approve that comment and defend my site and writing to the death. And, as I said before, this is exactly what they are counting on. Luckily, Mama didn’t raise no fool and I was able to see through the BS to get to the bottom of the actual comment origins.

Just a Heads-Up

So, in closing, just as a heads-up be on the lookout for this style of comment spam. Don’t get caught up in the emotions of the comment and make sure you take a look at the who’s posting it.
