How to…

do a two-person arm carry (both styles).

use a boot/shoe as an arm brace, since it is approximately the same length as your forearm.

love 50 mile bike rides through Wisconsin

understand the fact that you cannot ride a bike head-first into a ditch, and not crash

Mistakes are made. This was mostly done in a wrote this on a cocktail napkin fashion, as well. Comments and criticisms would be great, too!]

I’d like to suggest that time is not infinite, and, in fact, “infinity” should not be used practically, but only theoretically.

Let a=1/3 and b=.33… (where ‘…’ indicates repeating to infinity).
1/3=.33…
a=b
3(1/3)=1
3(.33…)=.99…
3(a)=1
3(b)=.99…
a does not equal b, after a simple multiplication. (I understand this can be shown with limits as well.) But a=b seems obviously and necessarily true.

So, .99… = 1 seems like it must be true somehow.

With a set containing an infinite set of numbers, it is represented by the infinity symbol.
With a set containing an infinite set of time places, I will represent it with St0-tn.

How is it ok to represent infinite time like this?
“Infinity” is an abstract conception. So, this can be an abstract confession as well; we can see how it is possible to represent and split infinity into parts.

First, in common usage, one typically has no problem mentioning “half an hour” or “36.48 seconds”. Time has been indexed at a certain point in one case, and has been split in the other case.

The following diagram will be used in the proceeding paragraph as tool to demonstrate another supporting reason.

The red line represents an infinite area of measurement. The blue line represents a line splitting the infinite area of measurement. And the green line represents the new infinite are of measurement. Eventually, since the infinite area can be split, an infinite area will eventually decrease to a .00…1 where it would eventually become 0 (by the same principle as demonstrated earlier).

So, we can now say this:
(St1/3^ St1/3^ St1/3)=St0-tn
(St.33…^ St.33…^ St.33...)=St0-tn

The latter suggests infinite time while the former suggest a finite time.

How do we decide?
To have infinite time, we’d have to accept that a does not equal b, i.e. 1/3 does not equal .33…). However, a=b seems obvious and necessary.

Infinity is simply a notion that should be used only in theorizing, and rarely, if at all, in practical application.

(I’d also like to note that this fits perfectly with a deterministic view of things, which can be for a different time.)

One Year Veg

Today is my one year vegetarian anniversary. Well, technically the 29th of February is the date, but I’ll forgo worrying about whether the anniversary was yesterday or today (probably, it should have been celebrated yesterday). But in any case, it’s been a good year.

What have I eaten?
Overall, my eating habits have been much healthier than when I ate meat. How so? For one, those nights after the bars are no longer consisting of three double cheeseburgers and a McChicken. So, to fill this void, I’ve migrated 75% of my fast food business to Taco Bell. It’s the cheapest form of Mexican food (though its a shame to call TB Mexican food) and it has great hours. The other 25% of my business: Burger King. Veggie burgers at a fast food joint are amazing.

Another way it has positively impacted my health is in an unintended side effect. Over the year, I lost about 35 pounds. My typical habits, which I did not change, are as follows (first summer, then winter): biking, eating chocolate, walking, disc golf, frisbee, a little tennis, relaxing outside, sitting inside in the warmth, shivering outside, lifting a little bit, wishing it was summer, eating chocolate. The only variable: eating meat. I guess my metabolism was finally able to keep up now that I got rid of the fats in the meat and grease and the byproducts (read: gravy), the serving sizes of steaks and large burgers, and just the general unnecessary negative effects it has on our bodies.

So, briefly, I eat noodles, beans, peppers, potatoes, greens, etc. And it is delicious. (More variety than meat dishes, if you ask me.)

Do I miss meat?
Nah. I miss convenience, but I don’t miss meat.

What have I learned?
People like to give hell to vegetarians sometimes. I don’t like to sound preachy, nor high and mighty, but in these cases I usually just say I don’t have an excuse for my morals. Then again, there are cool people out there that are just curious about why or how long, etc. A couple of my friends from back home actually moved from the former category to the latter; that was pretty awesome.

I’ve also learned that other people around you can also benefit from vegetarians; if

I’ve also learned that talking about the morals aspect is important, but only under certain circumstances. In some cases, its not a good idea.

Will I keep going?
You know it. Deli sliced meats look disgusting, and the responsibility is necessary under all ethical standards.

Nothing to celebrate after this year; its just normal now.

If it seems like I’m talking myself up on this, its not intended to be that way; I’m just giving my account of this past year.

I feel this is worthy

Two things at this time in the morning are worth blogging about. That blew my mind for a little bit. But, with minimal B.S., onto the next topic.

2. Beating 3-card solitaire makes me extremely happy. I finally remembered to capture that moment of happiness so I can relive it later.

And, I learned how to upload to YouTube in HD. Modality. Language. All-in-one!

Well, I was writing a blog post, and instead of saving I just banked on leaving my Writer window open. Then I accidentally pulled the plug on my laptop without having the battery in. Which leaves me with this and a problem of forgetting what I was writing about.

First, while I have most reader’s attention, how about a claim that our universe could be fundamentally 2-D? A theory has stated that we could be living holograms reflected off of the fundamental 2-D waves of our universe. I love this stuff. It seems so far out there, but for those who keep open minds to even the most preposterous of things (as long as evidence is available, not something like religion, etc.) this is some fun stuff. Let me know what you think about this finding; I love discussions on this type of stuff!

The article that I linked to talks in great detail on this possibility; it is a fun read if nothing else.

Moving on, I think I will talk about my two philosophy classes this semester. Bear in mind that I do not have many talking points on these topics, as I have not previously been too in-depth with them. The first one that I am excited about is Modality. This will concern modal logic and trying to conclude, by appealing to alternative possible worlds, the necessity or possibility of certain apparent-truths or falsities. (I think that is a good way of putting it.)

The second class I am excited about is Philosophy of Language. The following proof is one of the more commonly found intro-day-stumpers as provided by the professor:

1. Nothing is better than happiness.
2. A sandwich is better than nothing.
∴ 3. A sandwich is better than happiness.

Now, we all can see that something is wrong there, but how can that be represented? The word nothing is stationary, but it seems to bring implications with it. Based on my extremely limited knowledge on this topic, I think that this distinction does come from the implications of nothing, i.e. “Nothing (that is good) is better than happiness,” and, “A sandwich is better than nothing (to eat).” But, I’m not sure if I can make a simple distinction like that or not.

This should be a fun time this semester. No sarcasm. (Seriously!)

Darwinism is.. magic? What?

In typical intertube-browsing-fashion, I happened to stumble on a blog full of ideas I do not agree with. Who is this latest perpetrator that prompts a blog post from me? Her name is Denyse O'Leary, and she doesn't believe in magic.

And suddenly, the penny dropped. What he meant was that I just don't believe in magic [regarding understanding how natural selection works]. I can't make myself believe in magic; I haven't been able to since I was a child.

Yes. Natural selection is magic. Wizardry is responsible for the changes seen in population of animals well-suited for their environment. However, there is no response to this woman; this is demonstrated in her next great quote. Mind you, I try to quote a large amount of text to undoubtedly demonstrate her irrational thought process.

As a traditional Catholic, I am asked to believe in the Virgin Birth of Jesus Christ. But I am not asked to believe in virgin birth as a general proposition, and especially not for human males whose mothers' pregnancies could be readily - though not respectably - accounted for otherwise. In that one instance, I am told, I cannot argue that "God wouldn't have done it that way," as I have no basis for arguing with God about what he would or wouldn't have done as an intentionally unique, divinely ordained event.

Ah, the age-old response. A virgin birth is not magic. Why? Apparently this is because she is not asked to believe in this as a general proposition, so it simply a one-time act from a three-omni God. The reply to this is simple, as given by Mylan Engel, Jr. (his co-authored blog found here), and elicits the BOK-maneuver reply. Granted, Engel uses this reply to combat the response to the evidential problem of evil. But, it applies here as well.

If Denyse believes that she ought to believe in this virgin birth, this one instance because she was told to, then she agrees that what God does is beyond her ken. If God is able to perform actions that are completely beyond our ken, then it is true that we can never know the way God works, or his intentions of such actions. If we can never know God's intentions or ways of acting, then we are in no position to understand anything God does. If we cannot understand anything God does, and view everything, or even some things, as intentionally unique, divinely ordained events, then we are in a futile position. Why a futile position? Let me explain. Denyse is trusting what she is told and accepts what God does since it is beyond her ken. Now, when Denyse (not to be rude, but it is inevitable) dies, she may or may not appear in heaven. Assume she does. In heaven, God looks at her and shakes His head. "Denyse, you helped starving children, you raised children and were extremely virtuous. But... I hate to tell you this... I actually condone the starvation of children, the abandonment of children and acting vile. So, off to hell with those other do-gooders!" Denyse cannot argue with God. All He has to reply with is that what He does is beyond Denyse's ken.

If you think you know that God commends your actions, then it looks like that virgin birth is pretty magical after all.

Tax Cuts & Hikes

Tax cuts are excellent for a politician's campaign and time in office for two main reasons. First, promises (and follow-through) on tax cuts brings a temporary optimism for those who are in the middle class and below. Paying less to a government, which presumably is being chastised for something unrelated and thus allowing for union of the underpaid masses with the higher paid individuals, excites members of a society. Excitement allows for both a politicians (re)election and for a short-term smooth-sailing ride. This leads into the second reason. When the population begins to question the state of the society, in terms of smart spending and observable improvements, the politician has a fast reply. Just as a mother would tell her insistent child, the tax-cutter is able to claim that there is no money to be spent!

Now start this vicious cycle again. You see there is a need for taxing, but you have promises of tax cuts due to a poor economy. Promises of tax cuts excite, unite and deliver a candidate. Luckily, or at least I hope, new tax policy in this new year will allow for both the cuts needed to move the economy along while also promoting a more beneficent attitude from those who are not as bad off.

I understand this is all well know, i.e. you cannot reduce taxes all the time and still have a thriving state. Perhaps I am simply doing some publicized anticipation of what <strike>can</strike> needs to happen in the future for this country.

To My Roommates

In no particular order, and without name, here are my end of '08 blurbs to roommates of current and past.

Playing video games and having someone up all the time was awesome. Not to mention your keyboard skills for Come Sail Away were awesome.

Bass coming through my walls only bothers me when its rap bass; it was cool to have the classic riffs coming through for the year.

Sorry I had sex with your friend as you were sleeping in the same room. But seriously, you shouldn't have stolen my papers.

You were gone a lot, and the upstairs kind of did their own thing most of the days. Sorry bout that dishwashing/silverware debacle; that was a waste of good time.

Best room mate tie person 1. You were gone a lot, but when you weren't gone, it was awesome. The drama wasn't even that bad.

I thought it was going to be a lot worse than it was, but you actually were a cool dude mostly. Like everything, moderation is key. But hey, you stick to your guns and I give you credit for that.

I thought you were a good person. In retrospect, you're selfish and lack of a lot of respect for people. It's a shame and I hope you can figure out a way to live comfortably while not disregarding those around you.

Best room mate tie person 2. Awesome times, man. I really don't know what we did though. Time flew by. Good luck with everything, but I hope this isn't where I say that for the last time.

Well, damn, it looks like I've gone through a lot of room mates. It is tough living with some people. Being friends is one thing, but sharing the same common areas all the time can really push some people over the edge. Its tough to find people who can deal with you at the same time you're dealing with them, but not caring that you have to deal with them.

Merry X-mas!

Christmas is here, a time to celebrate family, friends, and, most importantly, the winter solstice. Granted, winter solstice was December 21st; however, with the transformation of natural holidays into religious holidays, I figure it is very appropriate to celebrate it all at once on the commonly-accepted day.

So, Merry X-mas!

This upsets me.

I found this gem when I was in FYE at the local mall the other day. The first thing I heard about this season was from (New York?) where an atheist organization hung a public poster relating to celebration of the season without God in mind. This is comparable to religious billboards relating to the celebration of the season with God in mind, right? Not so fast; at the time of reading that article, it also stated the theistic knowers wanted this slanderous litter down. Yup, free speech only works for some if it is something they believe in.

Anywho, in this mess of seasonal disagreement, I found some interesting videos on YouTube. This guy is very satirical, but I'm assuming if you're reading this you can understand that. The video here is titled "God only SEEMS Nonexistent!" I recommend this user's channel; I like to think of these videos as philosophy done in fit-for-the-masses style.

Why I Wear Nice Clothes in the Winter

<strike>I need to dress to impress.</strike>

<strike>I'm a big fan of showing off how pretty I can be.</strike>

<strike>Chicks dig it.</strike>

<strike>I emulate NYC even though I probably never will live there.</strike>

Because it is fucking cold out and these are the warmest layers possible.

Bring on the sweaters over button ups over undershirts.

Election night stuff you haven't heard.

I sit here, post-projection-election, feeling satisfied and a bit surreal-like. Obama wins. Silence. Adrenaline pumps a little bit. Then a calm. Happy stuff.

But, what about the people who voted McCain? What better place to find out than Facebook status updates? Here are four reactions I ran across.

Jane Doe wants to cry...i am moving to canada. NOBAMA!!!

Jane Doe Jr. is Obama is not my president. Obama is a shady socialist crook that is about to fuck this country in the ass.

Jane Doe III. is people who don't know about economicsshouldn't vote...thats why Obama won...so dumb...doubt people will be this happy when all their money goes 2 taxes.

John Doe is fucking pissed . . . come take my guns away from me Obama . . . I'll be waiting for you

Jane Doe IV. If the world was REALLY going to end in 2012 as the Mayans said, pretty sure we just effing sealed that envelope.

Jane Doe V is not happy about the election!! ((NASCAR WAS A BLAST!!!))

And those, in order, are my favorite ones. Hopefully I run across more as the night continues; they are pretttttttty, pretttty, prettty interesting.

(Unrelated: It's great to have a White Sox fan in the White House.)

How do I live?

I am an idealist trying to resist the reality of it all.

I promote values that I will not be able to change on my own.

The idealized values seem futile to others most of the time.

But I figure I only get one chance at it all, so I might as well stick to my <strike>guns</strike>.

Why do I keep forgetting?

For some reason, I keep forgetting that I have a blog. That, or I get incredibly lazy. That, or I just don't have anything exciting to blog about. I should really find interesting things to blog about, since I do have the time.

Since classes have started, I've skipped 8 of them. It's been 3 weeks. And I still feel up to speed on everything. I've grown completely apathetic toward formal education. Certain classes are able to prepare you for certain experiences, but most classes fail to prepare you for much more than what knowledge you would gain after a night of watching the Discovery Channel and History Channel for hours on end. (I'm mostly criticizing my Geology 103 class right now; my Philosophy classes are actually quite interesting -- especially Philosophy of Religion.)

In other news, I turned 22. First anniversary of being 21 went pretty well.

That's all I got. I need to shower.

10 Days

It's been quite the 10 days. I've gotten my car fixed (no AC), I've gotten more moved in (but I'm still slackin' on that front), and I've got to experience more great situations in life. As cheesy as that last statement sounds, it is true.

The new place is going pretty swell; the place is working out nicely and the people are working out very nicely. I took a gamble by living with a girl this year (completely platonic in nature), which is better than previous experiences with living with women. Then again, she has a "one of the guys" personality, so it's all good.

I am glad summer is over though. I'm not excited because I don't enjoy minimal responsibility, but I am glad I don't have to work in the same situation I have been for the past 3 months. Then again, work is a completely different story which I won't get into. After all, I don't want to offend anyone while I am onymous.

So I will leave with this...

Overheard: (Pointing at a water tower) Do they really put water in those things?

Long time. No post. Lots happened.

I think I'll make this brief, and semi-chronological from the last post.

Act .5
I forgot to put in here that my bike got stolen. 200 bucks. Gone. Some asshole just had to cut the lock. The funny thing is, I had taken off my seat in fear of that being stolen. I also had a flat front tire I had been meaning to fix. How desperate can a bike-stealer be? Assholes.

Act I
I started moving. We are now living in a place a little further away from campus, but much nicer in my opinion. It isn't that the place is nicer (as I would rate it about the same) but the area is much more peaceful. Call me a hippie at heart, or whatnot, but I sometimes enjoy outside smells and non-loud-drunk-people. As soon as I get this place together, I'll probably post some pictures.

Act II
My car, the '92 Saturn SL2, took a turn for the worse. The AC pump seized up on me while I was driving, thus producing some metal on metal smells along with a lot of heat. With the heat came the breaking of my serpentine belt and lots of smoke. It was quite the spectacle. So right now I am driving our Ford Aerostar, a pimpin' half minivan/half conversion van. This weekend I'll be changing it back out for a self-fixed Saturn. Sadly, the old car won't have AC anymore since I'm just replacing the pump with a pulley so I can get the thing to work. Fuckin' cars.

Act III
Summer is almost over. No vacation. Nothing awesome to brag about. Not even a lot of money to show for it. I guess my pool skills got better, which is a plus. I need to get my classes straightened out soon since school starts on the 25th. 12 credit hours, baby. Should be nice.

All in all, nothing terribly eventful has taken place. Hopefully I get out of this bad-luck-rut that has been taking place soon.

Ben Sollee and Other News

First and foremost, I heard the song Dear Kanye by Ben Sollee on the radio the other day. For those who do not know, Kanye made quite the ruckus at Bonnaroo by being very late for his show and then not appologizing. Also, for those who don't know, Kanye is a douche. I enjoy his music, but as a person, lets get serious.

So here is the Ben Sollee song addressing Kanye and his crazy antics:

I thought the song was amazing. A cellist records a song on his laptop microphone telling Kanye to straighten up. Epic.

In other news, my tooth hurts. Read: nasty headaches have been taking place. I have a dentist appointment for tomorrow. In the meantime, the secretary recommended that I take 800mg of Motrin for the pain. All I wanted was some Tylenol3 (codein has never failed me with pain), but no, this is what I get. Oh well.

Computer Woes Nearly Solved

I haven't updated for a few days, but for good reason. My hard drive decided to crash on me last Saturday night. Basically, I went out, came home, went to sleep, woke up, woke up the computer from the screensaver, and things were freezing. When trying to plug in my dying HDD to a Windows box, explorer would freeze. Ubuntu wouldn't even force mount it.

So now I had to call Dell. Luckily they weren't too bad. I explained that my HDD was failing, and, after about 30 minutes of run around, the tech sent me out a replacement drive.

Now I was worried about lost data. I found a nice liveCD that had solid ntfs support and would force mount to this failing partition. Its a handy, very simple, liveCD called SystemRescueCD. I recommend it for file moving in situations like this.

However, I was not able to find my outlook pst file and firefox profile. For some reason all my AppData couldn't be read. :(

Now I get the fun times of trying to remember my bookmarks and passwords that were stored in firefox. Sigh.

I'm going to cut this one short though on account of being busy trying to get my computer set back up and get some files moved around. But, I think I'll use the words of one of the better cartoon stars out there:

I'm back, baby!

Halo Kid

As you've probably seen, there is a new video on par with Star Wars Kid -- Halo Kid. He takes the cake for time spent on doing nothing. And there is one thing that really makes me wonder about him. There is a perfectly good pool table next to him being used as a shelf for his cardboard guns. Now, lets look at the pros and cons of the pool table and his cardboard artillery:

Pool Table

Halo Artillery

Develop a skill.

Develop a personality problem.

Play against friends.

Friends? What friends? Even if you had them, they don't have sweet cardboard guns, so they are definitely not good enough for you.

Use developed skills later in life.

Be lonely when you go to the bar or hang out with yourself.

Perfect hand-eye coordination.

Become a master at building houses and forts out of refrigerator boxes.

That is a fairly short list, but I personally find it amazing a kid when through that much trouble to recreate things just for fun. Granted, I don't know how hold he is, and my judge of age is rough. (I would guess he is like, what, 14 or something?) If my judgment is right, he should be chasin' girls and trying to befriend people who can drive.

Then again, what do I know?

Hoff

Apple Monopoly?

I just ran across an article saying how Apple has finally opened their "App store" where a user can download things such as games (at a price) or iTunes <strike>plug-ins</strike> apps. One of these apps is the remote application where you can control iTunes from your iPod touch or iPhone. This little bit got me thinking... Apple really has a way of controlling what you use for what purposes and with what certain hardware. Is this not a monopoly forming viz a viz the Microsoft anti-trust ruling?

Apple software (OSX) on Apple hardware only.

They control 80%+ of the digital music market with their hardware.

Their music hardware (iPod) typically dictates the music software (iTunes) people will use.

They have an obvious monopoly based solely on the three aforementioned things. Is this wrong? Not by legal standards. But, from a consumer-welfare standpoint there are problems.

Apple works like any business: make more money than you spend. It is working well for them, and so far they are still innovating to bring more customers. However, as we have learned in the past, innovation does not happen as well without competition. As Apple eats up more of the consumer market share, it is quite easy to see them taking the same route as Microsoft with their anti-trust case.

Just as an example, take a look at how Apple was bundling Safari as a software update even when users did not have it preinstalled on their system. Seems fishy, no?

Just my two cents.

Manpris

Manpris, i.e. capri pants for men, i.e. long shorts/short pants, have been a hot topic lately in my discussions with friends. First, this is what they look like:

They look like long shorts, but aren't as baggy. Some may think "that's pretty gay," but let me address some issues here.

Most manpris have a drawstring waist. This allows for maximum comfort/flexibility in times of overeating (manly) or having to urinate or crap while on a long road trip, but not wanting to stop (also, manly). No longer must a man undo the belt and button on the pants (keeping the lady friends around happy).

Baggy clothes allow for more air to be trapped between the clothing and the skin. This air is heated by the body. Long shorts are generally heat-traps. Manpris solve this by keeping a slimmed down approach to the long shorts -- thus allowing maximum ventallation with minimum overheating.

I'm a big lover of vaginas and breasts. A "that's pretty gay" comment cannot really touch that. So really, even if it seems a bit homosexual to wear manpris, a straight-vagina-breast-lovin-man would be able to take them back. (See: How lesbians stole Portia de Rossi from men.)

The benefits of manpris clearly outweigh the losses (zero, as I see it). Furthermore, manpris are much less detrimental than the newest craze for some: the Deep V-Neck Shirt.

Oh noes

Well, I haven't updated for quite some time, have I? I guess I got wrapped up in other things... finals, work, friends, etc. It's a pain in the ass to keep these things going, especially since I don't have all the time in the world like the new-age hipsters seem to.

Seriously, how do they get by? I could understand if they just had no job. But then they go to Starbucks and get coffee and pound cake. That shit isn't cheap. Seriously, its like 6.50 for a small piece of pound cake and a mint chocolate chip mocha frappachino. And thats just a medium size drink (or grande, if you want to get Starbucks-technical).

In other news, I think I'm going to try using twitter. It seems like everyone and their moms are doing it, so I might as well, too.

Twitter me!

I also found this other cool service; its called muxtape. Check it out here.

Good day.

[EDIT]
Muxtape is no longer in service, sadly. If the link does work, it doesn't take you to the same cool service that once existed through them. I believe there are alternatives, but I haven't gotten into any really.
[/EDIT]

What do I hate?

I hate when I get out of the shower, don't wipe my feet off, get the floor mat wet, go to use the restroom later and get my socked soaked.
