Structured data has an open platform, thanks to a new startup aptly named Factual. At first glance, it seems like Excel on the web. However, Factual is more database-oriented, with joining and filtering built-in. Plus, sharing and discussing the data is an integral part of the experience. Most functions on the site, including both reading and writing data, can also happen via the Factual API.

There are lots of trees here. The water is always very still. And the sound of London seems to be afraid of entering this area.
This is the cover story for the prototype issue of The Industry Standard magazine.

"Look beyond the frenzy of the past few weeks and the declarations of victory sound terribly premature...The entry of Barnes and Noble last year was a turning point. J. Crew launched its online catalog, and The Gap began to test online sales of merchandise last fall....If 1997's holiday season was all about getting consumers to try shopping online, 1998's challenge will be to get them to return."
"The disciples of Bill Gates just aren't genetically suited to apology. 'We deeply care' about the legal sysstem, insited VP Sam Jadallah...The real problem, in the eyes of Microsoft execs, is that people just don't understand: Microsoft is right."

This advertisement from Absolut vodka appeared in the prototype issue of The Industry Standard in January 1998.

John Battelle was convinced that nonendemics would make up a significant advertising segment for the magazine. He learned this at Wired, and he was right. But there was plenty of business right in our backyard, so the sales team generally collected from the companies driving the Internet economy rather than the liquor and luxury goods categories.

This was good when things were good, but when the bubble burst the client base disappeared faster than cockroaches when the lights turn on.

When The Standard relocated to Pacific Avenue in the heart of downtown San Francisco not long after this issue was published, the message was clear: there was a new magazine in town and the agencies better pay attention if they want to join the ride. We could see most of the local agencies from the rooftop where we held post-production drinks with guests every Friday night.

"I don't need no *!@≠ bandwidth!" by Daniel Akst
Sometimes what concerns people most about using the Net isn't at all what you'd expect.

The back page column was treasured real estate for The Industry Standard. In the prototype issue of January 1998, Dan Akst looked at the world from a slightly different angle and provided the tone for many of the great columns to come out of the publication.

Dan asked not what can be done with greater bandwidth but rather what matters bandwidth when being a user of the Internet has other problems. In this case, he was talking about the now obsolete problem of waiting to connect to the network. But, as all the columnists did, Dan challenged the common views to offer an alternative perspective on what matters.

Some of the noteworthy columnists included James Fallows, Lawrence Lessig, Kevin Werbach, Carl Steadman, Michael Parsons, Jimmy Guterman, Eric Savitz, Danny Rimer, Christopher Locke, Steven Rosenfeld, Steve Fox...there are many.

"Because having too much information is just as bad as not having enough."

BackWeb claimed to push relevant information out to the enterprise with its Infocenter product:

"BackWeb's client/server Infocenter acts as a knowledge repository where relevant information from many sources such as the Web, your intranets, and corporate databases gets delivered to your desktop in an organized manner. Best of all, it's politely delivered in the background."

The company went public in 1999 and still exists with the same logo and mission, apparently. Though the press release section of the web site contains no product announcements, only patent infringement documents and share deregistration announcements.
The Industry Standard's columnists were world-class even from the beginning, like this prototype issue published January 1998 which had a piece from David Pescovitz. David, who later joined the BoingBoing team and subsequently MAKE, noted the disconnect between the instant messenger providers and the business models behind them.

"The money in instant messenging comes from three main areas. Tool vendors, including ichat and Activerse, license technologies enabling large companies to develop their own enterprise messaging services. Web services run instant messaging for thrid parties that want to use it for customer service or other functions. And, of course, there's advertising...

It will be up to the advertisers to determine whether they want their brand name flashing over uncontrollable content - whether it's a conference among competitors or a group of dirty old men talking teen sex."

When The Industry Standard covered technology it focused on strategy. It was important to establish the brand as a business publication from day one to differentiate from the many competing technology magazines flooding the market already. Internet publications had been tried before, but none of them were so focused on where the market was going and who mattered.

In this column by Steve Steinberg from the prototype issue in 1998 he challenges the future potential of Ricochet because of its deployment strategy.

"Two years after introducing the product, Los Gatos, Calif.-based Metricom has signed up fewer than 20,000 customers (out of a population coverage of 7 million) and is looked at with skepticism by Wall Street...

Each microcell, which consists of a shoe-box-sized device located on top of a convenient lamppost, covers about 1.5 sqare miles...

Try to get permission for lamppost rights, and you discover that half the time nobody is even sure who owns them: the utility company? the county? Usually it's a mixture of both."
