You're probably getting sick of me talking about Dropbox (referral!), but it just got even better today. It may have had the capabilities all along, but the form factor was such a turn off that it wasn't worth bothering with. Today's update of the Dropbox app brought iPad compatibility, however, and now it's a whole other ballgame.

The best part? You can "favorite" a file and it'll save a local copy.

Big whoop? Well, what happens if you 1) have a huge backlog of movies sitting around at home. 2) Are on the road and don't have access to 'em. 3) Are able to utilize the magic of BackToMyMac to throw a few into your Dropbox from afar. And 4) Can now suddenly download them locally. Fuck syncing files to get them onto your iPad. Fuck renting/buying/streaming on Netflix. Works flawlessly. You can jump ahead in the movie even if it hasn't downloaded from that point yet. Bring on the local copy. And you can add/remove movies at your whim for easier local management of files should you have gotten the 16gig version. Oh, and in theory, it should work on your iPhone...

I wanted to post a few shots from my 70-story race up 30 Rockefeller Plaza. A big thank you to all of the friends and family members who donated in support. I personally raised $800 for multiple sclerosis, contributing to our team's stunning $13k achievement.

By the way, I made it to the top in 14mins flat (that includes stopping halfway up for a stairway pic with some friends).

Oh, and Tina Fey says "hi".
Shotgun Disney.

I had to spend a few days in Florida for some work travel, so The Boif and I took a shotgun trip to Disney World last weekend. He'd never been to Disney-anything, so it was kinda cute bouncin' about watching the grin on his face. The weather was a bit cool for Florida, but the parks were pretty empty, and the two of us had no problem navigating all the parks in less than two days. Starwood points for the hotel stay and a few comp park passes made for a cheap getaway. Woot!

iTunes Contest + 1Password = Nearly Cheating.

Apple's running a contest -- and you could win a $10k iTunes credit. Best yet, you can submit entries on their website.

iTunes changed the way you buy music, making songs and albums available for download, day or night. Seven years later, we’re about to celebrate our biggest milestone for music, yet — 10 billion songs downloaded. Buy a song, and if it’s the 10 billionth download, you could win a $10,000 iTunes Gift Card. It’s our way of saying thanks.
Even better, I've found that I can use the fantastic features of 1Password to save the form and fill it out for me each time, entering only the unique captcha code at the bottom. Give it a go. 1Password is great. I'll include some of the resources I found that influenced me to make the switch. (Psst. Also try the educator discount and coupon code "iSlayer" for added discounts.)

If Nothing Else... (and podcastfun.)

If nothing else, I'd be happy with these accomplishments for 2010. More than I can say for Bush '01-'09...

I'm sure you saw:

Forces Pushing Obama on ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’

Obama to Seek Sweeping Change in ‘No Child’ Law

Obama Budget Freezes Much Domestic Spending

In $3.8 Trillion Budget, Obama Pivots to Trim Future Deficits

PS: I'm sure many of you do already, but subscribing to a few video podcast feeds from the Whitehouse is a decent way to ingest information in the background:

White House Speeches (iTunes)

President Obama Weekly Address (iTunes)

PPS: A few other fun Podcasts (and believe me, I'm not one for Podcasts):

Apple Keynotes (iTunes) -- better quality than online

pmaCast... Pretty Much Amazing blog (iTunes) -- works great on iPhone w/ chapter select

DJ Jonny Moirée (iTunes)

What do you listen to regularly?

You've heard me attribute a great majority of my musical awareness/awakening and concert-goings to mTye, now you can see him rock a daily Billboard news spot for Fuse. Who's he, you say? He's only the Executive Editor of Billboard.com, as quoted by CNN. Not bad, my friend, not bad.

In other news, it seems to be raining publicity for my old colleagues. See the always-gorgeous (and super sweet) Kim at AOL in this swanky music spot that reminds me of old Apple commercials or something.

Boxee Beta Brilliance.

For those of you who've got a mac or Apple TV hooked-up to your tele, it's time to nab Boxee's new public beta. I know it's been a while since I updated my mediacenter mayhem post (and there are some exciting new toys, too), but I've been playing with it for a little while now and it's pretty slick. It doesn't necessarily replace Front Row for all your video sundries, but it's got some great features. The Netflix interface is nice and slick. The extra apps are somewhat interesting. The poster+IMDB info for movies is great (when it works).

The thing that's actually worth your time is the TV Shows and Movies "Browse" functionality, which munges everything available to you via Netflix and the station sites (Like Fox.com, ABC.com, etc.) and presents everything based on popularity. (Basically everything except Hulu, which is Hulu's fault.) "Oh, between Netflix and ABC.com I can watch ALL of Lost on-demand? Cool!" Give it a go.

Made My Day: My Hookup List

There's no question that I'm a horrible person, but I find this kinda hysterical. In fact, the sister in question is going to be mortified. The comments by the people listed IN the hookup list are particularly amusing. Go here to see the whole thing.

Chris hides beer in his bedroom (we assume he’s underaged). Sister snitches on him. “asian parents are [f*ing] strict” as he explains, and they subsequently ground him for three months.

Infuriated and looking to get back at his sister, Chris subsequently discovers her very graphically detailed notes entitled “My hook up list” which describes her goals and aspirations for getting down with 10 different individuals, some of whom are crossed off aka “mission accomplished”. So what does dear brother do with this scandalous material?

He of course scans and posts it on his Facebook account. Tags hella people on it, including named “targets” who quickly find and comment on.

Thanks for the great find, Rob.

iTunesday: Under the Xmatt Tree.

Ho ho ho, it's time for some musical goodness. Perfect for any upcoming holiday travels and airport awfulness.

I've been sitting on a few of these for a few weeks -- sorry. The post was originally titled "iTunesday: Tunesgiving Turkey", but I don't think that applies anymore.

I'll save the editorial (since no one cares). The top cd is definitely the star on my little tunage tree. It's an überleak and doesn't drop until February of 2010. I'm a big fan of their new single. You'll love the cd. If you're in NYC, be sure to nab tix to their upcoming show -- they just added another date.

From top to bottom, left to right: #2 is a dual-disc whateverthing, #3 is fantastic, and #4 and #5 are alright. #6 is another early leak. #7-11: eat your heart out, if any of those are your thing.

To you, with love:
I can't wait until Hulu / iTunes / whomever makes cable service completely obsolete. We're so close...

Dear Time Warner Cable,

I find this response unacceptable. I clearly found your support email from your website because I did not find the information I was looking for. You do not clearly advertise your rates for EXISTING customers, and even trying to add services through your online experience (as instructed) is broken and results in "please call" (no surprise).
Our Time Warner Cable.com site has a tremendous amount of information on our services. Just click
on the ?Learn? link to read more about all the services Time Warner Cable has to offer. Then, when
you?re ready to order, many of our areas have online ordering through the ?Shop? link.
Thank you again for your inquiry.
Comments: Hi there...

I would like to inquire as to what options I have to add high-speed internet to my account.

What are the speeds available (download AND upload speeds please)?
What are the different prices?
What are the options for adding internet only as well as a "package" with cable and internet?

I do not wish to add any more channels, have a bigger cable lineup, or add internet phone to my services.

Thanks,

Let the iTunesday musical deluge continue. You're going to need an umbrella-ella-ella and about 10 hours to get through all this goodness. Well... most of it is good. But it's all definitely poptastic.

If I were in the business of starting snarky music blogs, I'd make one called "Songs That'll Definitely Be Used For Overly-Emotional Scenes on Grey's Anatomy." And today's post would include "Secrets" from the first cd listed here. Without a doubt. Listen for yourself and you'll agree. I'd also include this new song from Snow Patrol, but that's no surprise. (Psst, both were on the Calabresion bonus.)
Guess what leaked today? I haven't made it all the way through, but first impressions make remind me of Queeπ meets M!ka meets brilliance. Goes nicely with yesterday's leaks.
Dark, mysterious and fantastic. You're gonna love 'em both.
Why not a little Mac-o-Lantern action for the Halloween holiday? Find out how to make your own over at the always-loverly Instructables.
Who's up for a Marshmallow Civil War battle on Saturday?

Heyo boys and girls. It's time for another exciting installment of iTunesday, special Fall Fantastic edition.

I don't have much time before a meeting, so you're going to have to imagine the flowery editorial for yourselves:

Another A!r album? Yes please.

Everyone's obsessed anyway. Enjoy.

3 leaked tracks off the upcoming album, poptastically wondeful.

I'm not the biggest fan, but you might be.

Total pop trash, but definitely listen to "Ego" (and try to count the number of songs that sound like Jordy Sparks ripoffs).

Yodel eh.

40 tracks of total pop remix bliss. Fill your gympods! (Thanks Robbie!)

Uh, fantastic. Who knew? (Thanks m.Tye!)

The best album in this giveaway. A bit of a different direction for The Sevens, but I love it nonetheless. I've drooled over the Man of Medicine track before, now hear her wail on a few more.

Enjoy!

a!r

Dia:Date and Fallfantastic

Finally accepting that summer has come and gone, there's nothing quite like dressing up like an old man in my flannel and cardigan, jumping in a Zipcar MiniCoop northbound along the Hudson just as the trees are starting to turn, and enjoying a gorgeous Fall Sunday with The Boif. After heading to Fire Island on the off-season a few weeks ago, I've been all about enjoying the hoodie/sweater/jeans weather while it lasts. (About this time last year it was a trip to the Pumpkin Pickin' patch and Corn Maze with the boys.)

Our goals were simple: get in some "car-commercial driving" (y'know, where you fly down cute little roadways and the leaves billow behind you in a frenetic wake), finally see the Dia:Beacon museum (see website or Josh&Josh), and enjoy the cloudless fall day.

Aside: Since picking up tickets on Friday, I’ve been totally addicted to this new Zero 7 tune called ‘Medicine Man’… (It’s like 2 parts Jamiroquai, 1 part Sam Sparro Black & Gold, and 1 part quirky Zero 7.) It's been playing on repeat as the theme for my entire weekend. Click play on the embedded player above (or link here) before reading onwards.

The Boif was really sweet and made sure it all happened. He had overheard conversations about me wanting to get up north and check out the Dia museum. Perhaps unrelated, The Boif and I have also been wanting to satisfy a strange manual transmission itch (you have to have owned a stickshift car to understand), but sadly Zipcar stocks exactly zero manual cars in the NYC area. After a homemade breakfast of Challah french toast, scrambled eggs, and provolone cheese-infused chicken sausages, we headed on our merry way sipping the last few drinks of our coffee.

The Dia:Beacon is an adorable modern art museum with great selections from Dan Flavin (the florescent light guy), Joseph Beuys, Andy Warhol, and Richard Serra (the big steel art guy). In addition to its works, the building itself is a gorgeous, light-filled piece of architectural wonderment. A former Nabisco box printing facility built in 1929, it's a mammoth space with extraordinary skylights and windows that peek out on the fall landscape. Being in this space is worth the trip alone. (And don't fret -- the museum is literally situated across the street from the Beacon Metro-North railroad stop, so a Zipcar is certainly not required. It's a beautiful train ride up the Hudson river, to boot!) After scoping out the museum, The Boif and I drove around the neighborhood, grabbed a late lunch/early dinner, and headed back towards the city.

It's worth a quick mention: the Zipcar iPhone app is really pretty spectacular. Most apps are either amusing time-wasters, awkward alternate interfaces for web things that are still easier on the computer, or something stuck in the middle. The Zipcar app, however, proved truly useful. It's pretty, full-featured, and most importantly provides easy access to features that are incredibly relevant during a Zipcar reservation. Honk/Unlocking your car via the app is mostly glam, but other features couldn't be better. Encountering some unexpected traffic on the way back into NYC, we easily added an extra 30mins twice via the app with a few touches (it even tells you when the car is next reserved). It's always been easy to do that via the Zipcar automated phone line or even text, but this feels a little bit more secure and painless. It's also pretty great to plot your trip back to the car's "home" in-app. My one critique is that some of these useful features aren't available until your reservation time actually starts -- it'd be really great to automatically plot the route to your car's 'home' from MY home via a click, or the ability to extend/modify your reservation ahead of time, but I think they'll get these worked out in the next revision. Overall, an incredibly useful app that makes for a brilliant extension of their web services. (iTunes link)

Happy Fall, everyone.

The Good Enough Revolution

I know I've been slacking a bit lately (things be crazy, yo), but I wanted to share a great article I read in Wired. It's no secret that I'm a bit of a dork, but Wired is one of my favorite publications. It's gorgeous. The stories are pretty varied, but they keep them short. And their lead stories are often really intriguing. They're not trying to break big news. They're more like the Discovery Channel meets the History Channel meets the Nerdosphere.

For anyone who works in a field where there's some sort of output or product (especially web), Wired's article called "The Good Enough Revolution: When Cheap and Simple Is Just Fine" hits things on the nose. A chronic pixel-perfectionist myself, it's hard to embrace the "just get it out there" mentality, but time and time again it's proven that those who simply DO SOMETHING do much better than the multitude of those who could actually DO IT BETTER, but don't actually end up doing anything at all. Sometimes quantity IS actually better than quality. And something is generally better than nothing.

The article explains how simple concepts and low-level technology have completely changed the way we live. The Flip cam made a huge splash because it was simple and easy to use. Skype is becoming the leader in telephony because it's free(ish), even if the quality isn't the best (but with AT&T nowadays, does it matter?). Hulu's quality may be low, but it's accessible on-demand and generally free. The article goes on to explain the MP3-effect (a crappy quality became the norm and redefined music):

To reinforce his point, he pointed to the MP3. The music industry initially laughed off the format, he explained, because compared with the CD it sounded terrible. What record labels and retailers failed to recognize was that although MP3 provided relatively low audio quality, it had a number of offsetting positive qualities.

Shirky's point is crucial. By reducing the size of audio files, MP3s allowed us to get music into our computers—and, more important, onto the Internet—at a manageable size. This in turn let us listen to, manage, and manipulate tracks on our PCs, carry thousands of songs in our pockets, purchase songs from our living rooms, and share tracks with friends and even strangers. And as it turned out, those benefits actually mattered a lot more to music lovers than the single measure of quality we had previously applied to recorded music—fidelity. It wasn't long before record labels were wringing their hands over declining CD sales.

It's a good read, although it'll seem very obvious and familiar. You've been living the principles. The challenge now is applying them in new endeavors.
