I had an out of bubble experience while I was sick this past week.  I shut myself off of any and all tech, mobile app and gossip news to focus on getting better.  I missed a lot, and at the same time I missed absolutely nothing.  Not surprising.   Everyone in any sort of cultural bubble resurfaces now and then to get a grip on reality.  I hope so at least.  I simply realized, as I gasped for air this time around, that I was submerged for a lot longer than usual.

I truly believe that nothing matters till you have enough perspective to realize that they don’t.

It’s amazing what synthesizers can do.  It’s also amazing what they can’t do.  The richness of all the samples Diego Stocco used for this experiment are phenomenal.

Almost everyday, on my way to a local bakery, I walk in front of a dry cleaners. When they have the front door open, I hear a lot of interesting sounds coming from their work equipment. Eventually, the different mechanical and steam sounds sparked something in my mind, so one day I asked the owners if I could record a piece of music by using their machines as musical instruments.

Lytro just opened pre-orders for the first consumer light field camera.  These “living photographs” allow you to focus a photo later by using a microlens array to capture 4D light field information about a scene.

“Regular photographs just don’t tell the whole story. If you think about all the light that enters that enters the lens of a camera, that’s much more than a photo. The light-field is all the higher-dimensional information that’s lost in a regular photo. When we record all this information, that provides us the opportunity in software after the fact.”

What happens “after the fact” is the big breakthrough: once the light-field data is captured, Lytro’s algorithms can do some impressive tricks. First and foremost is the ability to focus on any point the viewer wishes.
