Discovered this fabulous feature as I was tallying my mileage for our Middle School Cooking Winterim* experience this week.

Simply type in your Google search:

Distance between (address or business name) and (destination),

and voilà:

Just for fun, I took it a bit further, and discovered that this works for distances in mere feet too, like how far is it from my house to the house across the street, for instance (FYI 36 feet). Isn't that the coolest? 😎

I think this would make a fun prompt in math class, to launch problems with individuated solutions.

"What's Up with Google?" Google Rocks! Hawaii back on January 25

Google Rocks! Hawaii will be back on January 25, after a nine-month hiatus, with Show #86!

We will be airing monthly during the school year, on various educational topics, and always with something Google-rific in the mix.

Starting us off will be some special EdTech Team guests, who will get us pumped for the HAWAII SUMMIT, featuring Google for Education. The Summit will be held on March 25-26 at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. You can register right on the Summit page, on the upper right.

The New Google SITES: Recommended Tutorials for Teachers

The new Google Sites arrived for everyone in November (Finally!). And according to many early adopters, Sites is a cinch to use.

First, of all, if you're still pondering a transfer to the new Google Sites, check out Mike Reading's comprehensive article comparing the classic Sites to the new:

What does the new Google Sites have to offer and how does it compare to the classic version?. Mike Reading, Google Certified Teacher and Trainer and Microsoft Master Educator. Using Technology Better, no pub. date.

The new Google Sites, with 🎉 drag-and-drop and 🎉 real-time co-editing, is looking simple for the moment (just a few themes to choose from), but things are guaranteed to change, ala Google's MO. Luckily, my favorite feature is already in place: 🎉 seamless integration with other GSuite products. And a must-have feature? 🎉 automatic optimization of Sites for different devices.

(One drawback is that you can't move your classic site over to the new.)

"My granddaughter is 6 now and in 1st grade! She's beginning to ask questions like "is air heavy?" When I was a kid my parents got me The Book of Knowledge. Why is the sky blue? How come things fall down, not up? I remember reading every page! Today the Internet can answer those questions, but how about those things you never think about? Can you recommend books with info about questions like these? What are today's successors to The Book of Knowledge?" -- Richard

As you know, Richard, new is not necessarily better. Wasn't The Book of Knowledge the BEST? Everything was in there!

5 Tech Tools and an Observation at CUE Rockstar Maui

It was so much fun to have Seabury Hall host CUE* Rockstar Maui camp this week!

I was a lead learner (this is a more appropriate title for me than teacher or presenter, I think, especially in a hands-on event like CUE Rockstar), so I didn't get to attend the other sessions.

However, I did keep my ears open to the conversations, asked questions during breaks, and enjoyed the photos and videos that attendees shared.

And these tech tools piqued my interest:

1. +Michael Fricano II whipped out his Ricoh Theta S camera to take the group photo shown above. So cool!

2. +Meghan Walters shared JoeZoo, a rubric-centric, feedback-friendly Google grading tool Add-On that looks like it would be fantastic for grading English and history essay projects. I must investigate!

3. Stand-alone Street View App to post spherical photos. It's a misnomer. They need to change the name. I'm going to do indoor shots when our library renovation is complete.

4. +Joe Wood says that the Round Me app to publish VR (virtual reality) captures, is as hassle-free as the developers claim.

5. Lastly, Videolicious sounds like a winner! Broadcast journalists sometimes use the app for quick reporting of the news? No way! I will definitely have to check it out.

STORIES: Think South, Raising Our Students' Awareness on Earth Day

We learned a thing or two on Earth Day!

Former music teacher Cathy de Moll returned to Seabury Hall on Friday after 30-some-odd years to tell us all about the 1990 International Trans-Antarctica Scientific Expedition, her role as its executive director, and the importance of preserving Antarctica for the sake of the earth.

Cathy's book Think South: How We Got Six Men and Forty Dogs Across Antarctica was just published in October by the Minnesota Historical Society, on the 25th anniversary of the Expedition.

That Cathy told the story in chapters devoted to the people involved in the expedition is a genius arrangement. Such interesting characters! And of course the story of crossing the merciless Antarctica is so compelling.

These are some of the things I learned from Cathy's talk:

•The 1989-90 Expedition was the first-ever and last-ever unmechanized crossing across Antarctica:

•Antarctica is the only place on earth ruled by consensus. It's a scientific laboratory, with no military activity.

• Ten million students followed the 1990 International Trans-Antarctic Scientific Expedition, and they fell in love with Antarctica.

• Antarctica plays a critical role in climate change. Antarctica will prove to be one of the primary contributors to the rise in sea levels all over the world. See 'A dire prediction' on melting ice sheets and rising sea levels by William Yardley and Raoul Rañoa, L. A. Times, April 7, 2016.

•The Paris Agreement of 2015, a global treaty signed by 171 countries to limit carbon dioxide emissions, is a giant step in the right direction to prevent global warming. More international cooperation is imperative.

•It is of extreme importance to renew the 1991 International Antarctic Treaty which will protect and preserve Antarctica. This Treaty will expire only 5 years from now in 2021.

History teacher Kathy Czar, who arranged to bring the entire sixth grade to listen to Cathy talk, gave Cathy and her talk a hearty thumbs up. 9. The Phoenix Coding Academy, for high school students.

"Phoenix Coding Academy will focus on computer coding and technology in an inquiry-based environment that values student curiosity, collaboration, critical thinking, engagement and relevance. Google is an Advisory Council Partner of the Academy, and Google education evangelist +Jaime Casap is helping to build this specialized school within the Phoenix Union High School system. The school opens with a Freshman class in August 2016. I can't wait to see how the school develops. Read more about the Academy HERE.

10. +Molly Schroeder won the Demo Slam with her 3-minute BitMoji demo. BitMoji is a web-based app, and is now a Chrome extension that's available in Gmail! (BTW Snapchat just bought the mobile app, so expect lots of BitMoji action by Snapchatters).

I was so impressed by how much detail I could add to my BitMoji avatar (even face wrinkles!). What sealed the deal? I could add a flower to my hair, just as I do in real life. So cool!

Add the BitMoji extension to your Gmail and you have a whole array of BitMojis emotions to add to your emails. Like this:

Google Slides Tip: Title Your Slides to Create a Handy Table of Contents (And How to Add Titles Afterwards)

It had been there all along I know, but I just recently discovered that those title boxes on Google slides organize the finished slideshow presentation and help readers to access the content easily.

Before I start to view a Google slideshow, I like to see how many slides are in the show. Is it going to be quick, or is it something I want to enjoy over a cup of tea?

While I'm previewing length, I like to peek at what will be covered in the slideshow. And yes, I admit that I often jump right away to a particular slide that piques my interest.

So, yes, those title boxes are very handy. Mahalo to all of you presenters who take that extra step for us readers!

Here's how to add a title to a slide, after you've already done your slide show.

1. Click on the slide you want to change. (If you want to change several slides, command click or right click on all slides. And for all slides, select all.)

2. Go to Slide --> Apply layout.

3. Select any layout that has a title box.

4. The title box will appear on the slide(s).

5. Type in title. Adjust as desired. (You can even hide the title if you want.)

6. Done!
