What a good thing that all our customers over the last 10 years are optimists. Founders with goals that are much bigger than “write enough bills to pay the rent.” Businesses with an allergy to buzz-words. Customers who reward trust with trust and loyalty with loyalty; some since day one.

Clients tend to look at me doe-eyed* when I tell them how important it is to build up a fanbase. “But … but … but it takes forever!” is their inevitable reply, followed by: “Isn’t there a way to speed it up?” Yes, it can be done faster. Much faster.

Over the last couple of years a new kind of service appeared on the market: brokers dealing in friends. They offer to direct Facebook users to your Facebook page, who then receive a few (tenths of?) cents for “liking” you, and then you … drum roll … have a new fan. Yay! The price for one of these “fans” is roughly 40 cents, depending on the service provider. Of course, it makes sense to buy your fans in bulk, so how about a package of 1.000 fans, or ten-thousand or more? 50,000 new Facebook fans in just a few days! Awesome, right?

Nnnn…no. Not. Really. It’s just like paying someone to be your friend – it is, of course, not a genuine friendship, not even remotely. Facebook “fans” like this (or Youtube views or Google+1 clicks) that are paid for aren’t the real thing: Having nominal friends is like having a birthday party with cardboard figures.

The truth is, of course, everyone gets the fans they deserve. Also – and maybe surprisingly – it is simple to actually earn them. Matthew Inman (aka The Oatmeal) summed it up perfectly: How to get more likes on Facebook.

* If there are deer experts among you: the curious one in the photo above is of course not a roe deer, but a stag; I didn’t have a better picture of doe eyes in my collection.

With the publication of my new book edging near, I set out on a much-needed re-launch of the MAULCO. website. I asked all current clients to hold on to their to-do lists, got hold of my Content Strategy tools – chainsaw, bonsai scissors and chocolate –, cut down some trees and planted new ones.

Among the fallen trees is MAULCO. medical, our medical marketing spin-off, simply because I noticed that doing Online Marketing Consulting for doctors is basically the same as doing it for, say, coaches or shrimpers. After I had pulled those old gnarly roots, I transplanted our new offering to the most sunny spot: Content Strategy is something we’ve done for years, but only during the past year did I notice that what we’ve been doing actually has a name. (Thank you, Erin and Kristina for the shoulders I’m now standing on!)

Just as it has been the case with the last re-launch in – gasp – 2009, this new website is incomplete, and I do hope that it will stay incomplete for years to come, because that is the only way to achieve what we’re always striving for: Flexibility and continuous improvement.

Much of this website has already been translated, including the new page on SEO for Grown-Ups, and much work is still to do. You might still find references to our friendly translation gnomes on some pages. If you do find them, please take appropriate action to help speed up the translation process.

— Oh, the book? That has not yet been translated, and I’ll start finding an English-language publisher right now. But even if you don’t understand German well enough, you may just ogle the beautiful, hand-picked videos accompanying each chapter.
