Bagaimana cara organisasi Anda berkomunikasi? Siapa target audience organisasi Anda?

Maverick welcomed another office visit from university students on Jan. 12. As known, Maverick always welcomes curious young minds who want to learn first hand what we do in a Communications Consultancy.

Twenty six Bina Nusantara (Binus) University students, majoring in marketing communications, broadcasting and public relations, arrived at our humble, but always bustling office that afternoon for a sharing session. Our sometimes hyperactive colleagues were at their best behavior to welcome the students and we were very glad to find our young Binus friends were completely at ease when they stepped into Maverick headquarter.

Lita Soenardi and Ong Hock Chuan, as the founding partners of Maverick, officially welcomed the visiting students by giving a bit of our history. Maverick started up with only six people in its payroll and almost 10 years later, we have grown to a company with almost 70 employees in total. And Ong shared how we had come to grow this way because we have always differentiate ourselves as a consultancy and not just as any other PR Agency.

After the short intro, Sharon Issabella, one of Maverick’s Senior Consultants who acted as the moderator of the sharing session, introduced Crivenica Alam (Riri), the Head of Consultancy in Maverick who supervises both the corporate and marketing communications practices and manages the consultancy’s day to day operation. Riri opened up the session on “Consultancy in Maverick” topic by explaining the real meaning of Maverick, which originated from Samuel A. Maverick, a mid-19th century American rancher, who refused to do the norm of brand his cattle. The name Maverick then became singular with free-thinking people, who do not conform to the norm. This easily explains what Maverick as a consultancy is really about.

Shilla Christianto, the Vice President of Maverick who is also the Issues and Crisis Management specialist came second to share about that particular topic. She showed the case study of the BP oil spill in the Mexican Gulf as an example and the students were intrigued by the topic.

The next topic of the sharing session was “Integrated Marketing Communications” which was shared by Siti Annisa (Tissa), a Consultant in Maverick who heads accounts such as Coca-Cola Indonesia and a newly acquired client, Acer. Tissa gave a lively and fun presentation on how to differentiate many channels of marketing communications such as, advertising, branding, activation, promotion, direct selling, and public relations by using David Beckham as a brand example.

The last speaker of the day was Hanny Kusumawati, the Head of Raconteur, the New Media division of Maverick. She explained how social media, when done correctly, can be one of the most effective tools of communications in the modern era with the popularity of Facebook, Twitter and blogs.

We could gauge how interested our guests in the topics we talked about as the students asked very good questions. Just to mention a few: they wanted to know how did Maverick handle something the Maverick way; what kind of crisis cases we have handled and how long could a crisis last; and what are the limits of social media communications.

The sharing session went lively and even a bit longer than we anticipated. However, we were glad to have the time to share some of our knowledge with these budding communications practitioners. And after a short office tour, photo session and an informal chat between speakers and students, we waved the Binus students goodbye with a hope that all the information given was useful to help them with their future career in the communications industry.

Udah baca Harian Detik? Eh, bukan…bukan Detik.com, tapi Harian Detik. Wajar aja kalau nama mereka mirip. Wong, memang masih satu perusahaan dengan Detik.com kok. Jadi, Detik.com sekarang itu bikin koran.

“Ha?

Detik hanya melakukan satu (iya, satu!) berita follow up tentang kasus sang presenter sekaligus pelantun lagu Hancur Hatiku itu. Padahal media online saingannya sudah membuat sekitar delapan berita follow up kasus tersebut.

Hmm….

SPAIN–Posting by Hanny Kusumawati

Some of my friends asked me how I could travel so often. I said, “Because my office is paying for it!” And they would say, “How lucky! But you’re traveling every year!” to which I answered, “Well, because every year, the office is paying for it!”

This August, together with my friend (and colleague) Shilla, we traveled to Europe (yaaay!). And yes, we used our Personal Development Fund–a nifty benefit to ensure that our staff have a balanced life to make them even better consultants. Together with our bestfriend (an ex-Maverick), Nancy, we traveled to 5 cities in 10 days: Barcelona, Sevilla and Jerez in Spain, also Lagos (Algarve) and Lisboa in Portugal.

The very first destination in Barcelona is of course–the Nou Camp, the stadium of Barcelona football club. You can buy a ticket to enter the stadium from a stall in La Rambla (the most famous stretch in Barcelona) a day before, so you don’t have to queue in front of the stadium.

We stayed in Double Beates, not far from La Rambla–whereby you can see lots of street stalls, open-air cafes and great art performances. For art lovers and those interested in architectures, the city is bursting with great works of Dali and Gaudi, very pleasing for the eye!

And oh, don’t skip the beach! It was summer-time, and you can walk down to the beach at 4 pm and had a suntan until the sun went down at around 8.30 pm.

Sevilla is the next city we visited after Barcelona. A small town with lovely churches and cathedrals and its wonderful alleyways, as well as a lovely Botanical Garden at the heart of it. Sevilla is also the place where you can see the original and the best flamenco dance, said Salva, our taxi driver. We enjoyed a long walk in Sevilla, pretending to be princesses from ancient times at the Roman wall.

From Sevilla, we took a bus to Jerez, a very small town in the middle of nowhere. When we got off from the bus, we thought we’ve landed in a ghost town. It seemed like there was no living soul in the city! But Jerez is full of wineries. One of the most famous wineries is Tio Pepe’s Bodega that produces one of the best sherries in the world.

Spain is bursting with music, colors, and of course (you know us the Mavericks): good food!!! From tapas to tomato salad, steak to paella, all the ingredients are fresh and rich in flavors. Spain is definitely in my list of the world’s greatest food meccas.

PORTUGAL–Posting by Nur Shilla Christianto

After spending five days in Spain, we took a bus drive to the Algarve region, in southern Portugal. Our first stop is a coastal town called Lagos in which we fell instantly in love with. Its city center is sculpted with rich and colorful architecture, dating back to before the Roman empire.

One of the most celebrated buildings is the Saint Anthony’s church, famous for its asymmetric bell towers. Unfortunately, we did not have the time to visit the site as we (unintentionally) spent too much time shopping at the small niche shops and lounging at the alfresco cafes in the city center area. Excuses, excuses, I know. But seriously, as an avid foodie, who would want to miss the chance of having a bite of the region’s most renowned delicacy: Barbecue Chicken Piri-Piri! That’s one more tick off my bucket list.

While we had stayed at reasonably affordable accommodations in Spain, we decided to splurge a little in Lagos by renting a villa overlooking the ocean. It was the best decision ever. Not only that the view was amazing, we also had the huge place to ourselves and so on our first night there we fixed our own dinner, assembling our rendition of the Western European spread.

We knew that we needed to burn off our holiday splurges, and so the next day we took a long walk to Meia Praia, the largest open bay in the area. After all three of us spent a couple of hours sunbathing there, Hanny continued her photo-hunting walk, immersing herself in the city’s life and heritage, while Nancy and I decided to sign up for a sea kayaking activity that lasted for 5 hours! We were assigned in pairs, and the guapo guide (Google it if you don’t know what it means) took us to view the most breathtaking caves and grottos off the coast of Ponta da Piedade. Never mind the tan, this, I have to say, was the highlight of the trip.

We made our final stop at Portugal’s capital Lisbon before heading back to Jakarta. It was rather sad that we only had one day to spend in a city as beautiful as Lisbon. And since we were too exhausted from the six hours drive from Lagos, we took a city tour in a cab. We cheated, but at least we got the basics covered–and that includes stuffing our face with the most decadent Pasteis de Belem (Portuguese egg tart pastry) and a visit to the Sunday market.

You know it was a good summer holiday when you came back to work sun-kissed, refreshed and energized–and it’s a better feeling when you can hold your office accountable for providing you with this state of happiness.

Kita tunggu.

Before you read more of this article, let me ask you a simple question: does your company use social media as part of its communications mix?

Most of you would say yes. After all, social media usage is on the rise, particularly in Indonesia. We are now the second largest Facebook nation in the world with about 39 million users. We are also the world’s third largest generator of Tweets. A day hardly goes by without news of a group or a social movement making good use of social media to reach thousands or millions of constituents.

The use of social media has become so prevalent and fashionable that most companies have to have a presence in one or more social platforms. Which leads me to my next question: how seriously do you take social media?

This is an important question as many companies have been burnt because of their “only a little pregnant” approach when it comes to social media. It may be a virtual world but the rules of pregnancy still prevail when it comes to social media. You are either pregnant or not. You either social media with full respect or it can turn around and bite you.

According to the latest study conducted by Altimeter Group, a research-based advisory firm headquartered in California, companies are quick to deploy the latest social media technology, yet most have not prepared for the threat of social media crises, or long-term effects on business – and suffer because of this.

The study was conducted through an online survey of 144 social business program managers at corporations with more than 1,000 employees, 63 interviews or briefings with corporate practitioners and social business software, service, and solutions providers, and analysis of over 50 social media crises from 2001 to present.

The firm defined a social media crisis as one that arises from, or is amplified by, social media, and results in negative mainstream media coverage, a change in business process, or financial loss.

The study further revealed that based on more than 50 crisis cases between 2001 to 2011, social media crises primarily stem from the exposure of poor customer experiences, poor influencer relations, or violations of ethical guidelines with the most fragile industries being consumer goods, followed by apparel and fashion, restaurant, internet, retail and airline.

What surprised me was the rising number of crises resulting from social media activities. Last year, the firm recorded 10 social media crisis cases, while during the first eight months of 2011, six crises have already occurred. It suggests that companies must start to think how they should prepare themselves to handle a social media crisis rather than simply joining the euphoria over these modern platforms.

So, what makes companies vulnerable to social media crises?

According to the study, while companies have been quick to deploy Facebook fan pages or Twitter accounts, they often ignore the complexities of social business. Long-term success in social media requires adequate preparation. For the corporation, this involves a realignment of roles, policies, processes, and more – it’s a transformation of the enterprise into a social business.

At the very least, a company needs a social media policy that protects the company and employees. A social media policy dictates acceptable employee behavior in social channels, safeguarding the company against legal risks raised when employees represent the brand in public. Typically, such a policy includes guidelines on disclosure and confidentiality, especially for personal usage of social media.

Furthermore, the policy should also encourage employee ownership. A company should not only dictate to its employees about disclosure or confidentiality, it should instead empower employees to use social media professionally.

As much as 83 percent of the 144 companies surveyed, have formalized an internal social media policy. Of Advanced companies, all 18 have such a policy in place. For example, Cisco instructs employees not to disclose any information that is “confidential or proprietary to the company,” while Ford reminds employees to “make it clear that the views expressed are yours.”

But having a social media policy is the first step toward inoculating a company from the likelihood of social media crisis. The next thing they need to consider is how to ramp up their capability and systems to enable them to respond rapidly and in a coordinated manner should a crisis strike.

Of companies with a formalized crisis response plan in place, 96% feel prepared for a social media crisis; of those without a plan, only 22% indicate preparedness. Furthermore, most Advanced companies (13 out of 18) believe that their teams and employees are prepared and know what to do in the event of a social media crisis.

So which is your company when it comes to social media and crisis preparedness? Pregnant or little pregnant?

Like any other company, not everything was always smooth-sailing for Maverick. We’ve experienced ups and downs, gains and losses, winning and losing.

But looking back, we must say that we are extremely proud of how far we have come since that time nine years ago, when we started with one employee. Throughout the years, we’ve had the pleasure of providing our clients with clear strategic thinking, helping them in engaging the public with their stories and even working side-by-side with them during crisis. However, not wanting to toot our own horns we’ll let the clients do it for us.

Timur Sukirno – Managing Partner, Hadiputranto, Hadinoto & Partners – was there in our infancy, and he was also there to celebrate Maverick’s 9th anniversary. We are flattered that he was impressed with Maverick’s combination of solid strategic thinking and clean execution.

Sonitha Poernomo – Country Head of Corporate Affairs, Standard Chartered Bank - thought that our team of young people was always wonderful inside and outside of work.

Jane Mary Morrison – Head of Communications & Contributions, PT H.M. Sampoerna Tbk. – said HMS has been working with Maverick for five years now, thanks to what she termed Maverick’s “professionalism and good network.”

While last but certainly never least, Leila Djafaar – Head of Corporate Affairs, PermataBank – commended us for our superior media monitoring quality and swift response to clients’ needs. She also wished that our business grow even more in the future.

Such wonderful statements and wishes naturally bring twinkle to our eyes, because to watch our people and our clients grow with us is what made us proud above all. Again we thank them, as well as each and every one, past and present, who has helped shape Maverick to what we are today.

It is true that we couldn’t have made it without you. Here’s to another glorious nine years of working and growing together!

To see more of what they said about us, check out the video below.
