Toy Story 3: Review

This has been the film I've been looking forward to since Disney purchased Pixar. We all knew it was coming, but no one knew what to expect. There is no doubt in my mind that I can call this my favorite Pixar film yet. Sorry Wall·e, but no matter how much I love the first silent portion of the film along with the subsequent thrill ride, Toy Story 3 just tops it. From the opening sequence which makes for a terrific reintroduction to the characters we know and love, to the final emotional moments, it not only is a wonderful Pixar film, it is a fantastic film, for everyone.

Watch this post and my Twitter feed for my thoughts afterwards.

When Apple introduced MacBook Air in 2008 (at the end of January in fact), most saw it as Apple's "netbook", a term they have refused to use, and rightfully so. MacBook Air is not a netbook, nor is it truly a laptop. It is a portable computing device, which Apple wanted to become the thing you take everywhere with you. Not just when you need a computer, but everywhere.

Ten things Apple can learn from the jailbreaking community and lifestyle

Jailbreaking is as simple as one click with blackra1n.

So, about two months ago now I jailbroke my iPhone again, using blackra1n. I'd previously done it in August, but ended up going back after the update, and because I didn't feel comfortable with it. But now, I'm not looking back. With the advancement of apps available to jailbroken users (be them apps on the springboard, or elsewhere in the background), they have now become an essential part of my mobile digital lifestyle. Backgrounding apps with ProSwitcher (free), or getting around to new places with xGPS (free) are things I now take for granted. And my custom theme (based on Suave)? I don't think I could stand going back to the default look of the iPhone at this point. It just feels so... archaic and tired to me now.

So thinking about it, I managed to come up with 10 things that Apple can learn from the jailbreaking community, and the accompanying "lifestyle". Whether or not anything on my list will ever happen remains to be seen, but if one thing is for sure, Apple needs to at least consider some of these to be taken seriously in the continuing race to market dominance, as their competitors in Android and even Palm's WebOS keep innovating and offering competitive features and designs to consumers.

So it's been a month since I switched over to Chrome. I've had a lot more time to stress test it and even through some of the bumps, I'm still using it.

Google Chrome for Mac Review

So Google just launched Chrome for Mac. I've been very excited for this day and have been waiting for it for a long time. I headed over and downloaded the Beta.

Installed and launched. It's fast. I'd dare say it's faster than Safari, which is quite an accomplishment. The first page that displayed was Google's home page. It prompted me to install Chrome, which I thought was quite amusing.

The holidays are upon us. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are both over, and the December rush has begun. Whether you're shopping online, through retailers like Amazon.com, Overstock.com, or offline in retail outlets such as Wal*Mart or Target you can be a smart consumer. By using sites like PriceGrabber or Google Product Search or mobile applications like ShopSavvy (Android & iPhone) you can be sure you're getting a good deal.

Of course, the best place to start is to look at who you're buying for, and how much you're willing to spend on them. But to get you started, I've thrown together a list of some of the bigger consumer products of the year. Ranging from the cheaper stocking stuffers, to the more expensive presents this list has a little bit of everything, although it's definitely for the geekier folk.

Check back daily, from December 1st through the 12th for our top picks in a variety of gift categories, from media players to the best geek stocking stuffers. Or, you can subscribe via RSS
Twitter or Email.

Announcing mavrev.org

For quite some time Maverick Revolution has contributed to the open source community with our urlShort Project. More recently, we've also put together the Better Twitter Greasemonkey script compilation. Up until today, urlShort has been hosted on SourceForge.net, which was great for a while. It was free, fairly straight-forward, and easy. But recently SourceForge decided to change everything, and it's been, quite frankly, a pain in the ass to find things now both as an admin, and as a user. In addition, their hosted apps service was almost useless for us.

As a result of both of these we decided to move urlShort off of SourceForge.net. Major thanks to Tobie for providing the hosting for mavrev.org, and the urlShort Project. With this move, we have switched everything over. Our trac, SVN, forums, and website for urlShort are all on mavrev.org now. In addition, mavrev.org will host other open source projects in the future, as well as offering articles relevant to the open source community through blog postings similar to mavrev.com.

In summary, mavrev.org is the same as mavrev.com, but strictly for open source projects. Currently that only includes urlShort, but that will be changing in the future.

Built with urlShort: m.brep.us

Services like blip.fm do this, but they require a separate account. So what if you just want to link your Twitter friends to a great MP3 track?

It's been bad, I know. In fact, it's taken 4 days to get everything stable. At first, things were working, but slow. Then they just stopped working randomly. But thanks to Linode's community, and our host (and my friend) Adam Kragt for their help.

As of this posting, everything looks good, and while there may be some small hiccups, the worst problems are done with. But for those of you who didn't stop visiting during the past few days, stick around because there'll be some exciting news coming within the next few weeks. :)

HostingZoom Takes urlShort Offline (updated)

Up until today, Maverick Revolution and its services including imgUp and urlShort have been hosted by HostingZoom. Then around 11am (central) today HostingZoom took the urlShort subdomain (u.mavrev.com) offline, without any prior notification. Citing concerns of "abuse/spam links" being spread using urlShort, they decided in their infinite wisdom to just block off access both for our users, and for our FTP access.

HostingZoom has effectively cut-off nearly 2,000,000 (2 million) URLs which are being clicked on around 5,000,000 (5 million) times per month. I can understand if they had a problem with links (which they claim we should have "filtered", which is damn near impossible), except the terms of service that urlShort users agree to is that links that abuse our service can be removed at any time, if they are reported by users. However, we have not received any reports from users (other than 20th Century Fox) for removal of any URLs. In addition HostingZoom did not contact us before deciding to cut off access.

We're working on moving to a new server at Linode, because quite frankly HostingZoom sucks. Please, if you've used urlShort in the past, contact HostingZoom and let them know that they suck. A lot. Thanks.

Follow @mavrev on Twitter to stay updated as we move to restore service to urlShort.

So, HostingZoom are being complete dicks, and ignoring our requests for access to our own data. The earliest point at which we will be able to move to the Linode server is this coming Friday. Sorry.

After 73h 15m of downtime, urlShort is back online. We will be moving to our Linode server sometime Sunday.

urlShort 1.2.0 Released

Just a few minutes ago, I released the latest version of urlShort, the free open source URL shortener. It's not quite what I had planned, but it's by far the most improved version yet. Version 1.2.0 features URL previews/warning which displays the full URL that you're about to continue to, as well as offers a thumbnail image (via SnapShots).

In addition, 1.2.0 fixes two critical security holes, of both Cross Site Scripting (XSS), and an SQL Injection vulnerability. Major thanks to m0nkee at GNY.ME!, who implemented the preview functionality, and located the vulnerabilities.

To use the URL preview functionality, the user must first select to enable it by placing a cookie on their machine. Our own urlShort service has been updated with these changes (enable URL previews).

Go download urlShort 1.2.0 now!

Two Weeks With Bing: Final Thoughts

More than two weeks ago, I wrote that I was going to switch to using Bing fulltime for at least two weeks, to see how it truly compares to Google. Rather than just searching for one or two things, as many do, I chose to use Bing and only Bing for at least two weeks. I wanted to give it a proper test. And you know what? There isn't anything about it that makes me want to switch back to Google.

It's surprising, because, I've used Google for as long as I can remember, and when I first looked at Bing when it launched I (like many others) dismissed it as another attempt by Microsoft to win in the search market. But it's not just "another attempt", it's a damn good attempt that I'm confident will result in Bing being the #2 search engine with a third or more of the market within the next year. Of course, that will be a direct result of their recent deal with Yahoo!, which is currently #2, but it will end up resulting in there being a very strong competitor to Google.

Competition has been one of my reasons for wanting to try, and now use, Bing. When there's no one attacking your business, because, let's face it Yahoo! is horrible competition to the likes of Google in search, you tend to stop innovating and there is no change. In Google's case, it's not so much that they had started to ignore search, but rather nothing new was coming (at least that the public saw), until Bing was launched. Since Bing has launched Google's image search has been drastically improved as a direct result of Bing's own image search, and Google's "caffeine" project has been announced. As the two continue to try and improve and beat the other, there will only be new things for users to experience in search, and it will only become better and easier.

Independent URL Mapping Directory Service 301works Announced

Earlier this morning the URL mapping directory service 301works which will allow short URL service providers the ability to regularly publish their URL mappings in order to preserve links in a historical archive. The service will be managed and maintained by GNIP. This new development comes as a result of tr.im announcing their closure and subsequent reopening, where it became painfully obvious that short URLs need a sort of "wayback machine" archive in order to ensure links exist even after their provider closes or discontinues service.

We will be regularly updating our own mappings from our urlShort service, and plan to offer support in future versions of the open-source urlShort Project for automatic archiving through 301works. Our long term goal for the urlShort Project is to provide anyone, publisher or user, with the software and information they need to operate their own short URL service, in an effort to improve transparency and reliability. This goal goes hand-in-hand with 301works' goal to correct the inherent problems with URL shortening.

The full press release is below.

Of course you have. And after you discovered that, you probably considered blogging it (if you have a blog that is), and decided it wasn't worth your time. You probably resorted to multiple tweets, which quite frankly, is annoying. So what are you supposed to do then? If only there was a way to quickly and easily tweet something over 140 characters...

Well, it wasn't. tr.im announced yesterday that they were bringing the service back. Of course, there's no way it was a publicity stunt, right? Yeah, I'm not buying it tr.im. It's pretty damn obvious you were having no luck selling, and decided to "shut down" to draw out potential buyers.

Up until now, no one's really had a product that could challenge Google, but recently Bing has changed that. But, I haven't really used Bing, only played with it and tested it. To really see how good something is you need to use it, and for more than a day too. That's why for the next two weeks I'm changing my default search engine to Bing and using it, and nothing else.

You may be asking, but what about ownership or limits on my posts... Well, there aren't any. Anything published on mavrev.com blogs is released under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial 3.0 United States license (CC BY-NC), which means it can't be used for commercial purposes, and must be attributed to you when republished or built upon. We're also not going to limit or censor anything you post, as long as it isn't spam (defined as content posted with the intent of selling goods or services, or to drive traffic to your own website to "read the full story" etc.) We ask that you respect others in your writings, as well as anyone who may comment on your posts. If you go against these simple rules, we will remove your access to publish new content on mavrev.com.

So, have at it! I know most people don't write blog entries anymore, and prefer to tweet their thoughts, but there's still a place for more in depth and longer articles such as my review of the BNO News iPhone app. Registration is free (of course) and only requires you provide an email address (which we won't use to send anything but password reminders, and notifications that you choose to subscribe to such as replies to your postings), and pick a username (preferably your first name).

Cheers!

Review: BNO News iPhone App

After spending a week with the recently released BNO News iPhone app ($1.99 + $0.99/month) I must say it really is the first of its kind. Sure, there is the AP Mobile app (free), but it's never actually... well, breaking news. By the time I get an update from the AP Mobile app (through push), I've already read about the story on Twitter (usually through @BreakingNews actually), or heard about it from friends elsewhere. Now, don't get me wrong; The AP Mobile app is a great app, it's just not very good when it comes to breaking news.

However, that's exactly what the BNO News app does. And not only does it like it claims, it also does it fairly well. Granted, I have had a few delays that seem to have been caused by Apple's push servers, rather than the reporting itself, since updates were usually already posted on their Twitter account. But when there aren't delays, the push notifications always beat the AP Mobile ones (when they even send any out), and even beat their updates on Twitter a few times.

The Begining of the End: tr.im Shuts Down

The popular URL shortener tr.im just announced it will be closing down immediately, with URLs working until December 31st, 2009 (the full text of their announcement is included below). And tr.im was no small operation. So now what happens?

Well, the biggest outcome of this is that all tr.im links will be dead by early next year. That means links that anyone has tweeted, emailed, or posted at any point in the time since its inception will be dead and broken. This only reinforces the gigantic problem with URL shorteners; it is crippling the infrastructure of the internet. Yeah, it's bad.

BNO News releases iPhone App with Push

Earlier today the Breaking News Wire BNO News released their iPhone application, which uses the push technology of iPhone 3.0 to bring users the latest breaking news stories as soon as they happen. BNO News originally started as a breaking news account on Twitter (@BreakingNews), and has recently branched into FriendFeed and email services.

The application costs $1.99, with a $0.99 charge per month, after the first month which includes a month of notifications for free. Push notifications only includes major stories chosen by BNO News' editors by default, while the user has the option to be notified of minor stories as well. Users of the iPhone app can also choose to have a "sleep period", where push notifications will not be sent.

While there is a $0.99 charge per month for full notifications, the app is still fully usable without the recurring fee with a limit of one push notification per day, however full access to all BNO News reports is always available.

I have not yet had the chance to use the app, but will be getting a review copy soon and will post back next week with my thoughts on it. BNO News also says that versions for both BlackBerry and Android are being considered. The full press release by BNO News and BitMethod, the company who developed the application, is below.
