Question by boots: Should we wipe out savings or go with home equity line of credit to finance home improvements?
My husband and I are debating how to finance some home improvement projects. He says use savings, I say use a line of credit(repay within two years hopefully) I am afraid if we use savings we will never replace it. He doesn’t want debt. Any opinions?

Neither. Never use all of your savings or borrow money for a luxury expense.

Save up the extra money and pay cash.

My wife and I are planning on buying a home for $ 60,000 with the VA Loan but were wondering if we could get a $ 70,000 VA Loan and use the remainder for home improvements for it or are you just able to get the loan for the purchase of the house?

Yes it is. Mortgage rates are much lower than credit card rates and the interest is tax deductible, CC interest is not tax deductible.

I work at one of the largest private mortgage banks in the Midwest and lend nation wide, we do stuff like this all the time, it’s really quite easy. And can save a few hundred bucks a month. Feel free to email me.

Beware of the nasty IRS auditing mechanisms! Hmm, this is a good question. Somehow, I suspect 1000 dollar curtains are considered a luxury, and not an improvement. Although, one could argue, that all luxuries are improvements. Hmmmm, do we really want to get into a discussion about semantics when dealing with uncle sam though?

I added an addition on to my existing primary home in 2010. Do the windows and insulation used qualify for the 2010 Energy Tax Credit if they meet the criteria set by the IRS?

you may have the energy credits for the windows an insulation
otherwise you just increased the value of your home

I have been spending a fortune on improvements to the house such as remodeling bathrooms, bedrooms, office, updating light fixtures, new hardware, etc. Or is tax benefit only on energy items such as new energy efficient appliances, doors, windows, and insulation. I have been keeping all reciepts just in case. Thanks!

Question by MK: Where can I find information about federal or state grants for home improvements?
On the radio this morning, in St. Louis, I heard that you can get federal or state grants (NOT a loan – they clarified) for home repairs by looking at economic grants. The woman said that the government has these grants because they provide work to people and improve communities. She said you don’t have to have a low-income and that the only requirement is that you live in the house for at least two years (or move out within two years, something like that). I cannot find this information anywhere. Can anyone help direct me to the right website?

$ 23,000 for vinal siding, must be a BIG HOUSE….Go to a reputable Bank for a loan, Don’t ever mortgage your home with a Siding company, You Will end up in trouble……..Nuf Said
