MBAC RECEIVES CERTIFICATION OF LEED PLATINUM!

In April, the Mission Bay Aquatic Center became the first in the California State University System and second facility in San Diego County to achieve Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification for Existing Buildings Operations and Maintenance. LEED is an internationally recognized green building rating system, overseen by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC). Platinum certification is the highest level of recognition for green buildings under LEED guidelines.

“We have always hoped that people would see MBAC as more than a place to learn watersports,” says MBAC Assistant Director, Kevin Waldick. “This prestigious certification now helps communicate the message that the MBAC is not just about water safety and fun, but is also about a lifestyle of sustainability and a connection with the water we play in and the world we live.”

Getting certified by the USGBC is not an easy endeavor even for a facility that meets all of the requirements. It takes hundreds of man hours to provide documentation and compile data to earn credits to successfully complete the performance period. This work fell on the MBAC LEED Certification Team, a group of student volunteers from SDSU and UCSD who did the yeoman’s work over a period of 12 months. Many of the students are members of SDSU’s Green Love Committee or the USGBC Student Chapters at SDSU and UCSD.

Michelle Perez, the project’s LEED team manager and UC San Diego sustainability analyst, remarked, “Engaging the emerging generation in this mission is as important as the built environment we strive to improve. The diverse group of students shared their talents and strengths, bringing fresh perspective and energy to the project at every step. By engaging students in the MBAC LEED certification effort, both universities continue to green their schools from within.”

MBAC’s certification at the level of Platinum is an extraordinary accomplishment for a 40 year old building. Glen Brandenburg, Associated Students Director of Facilities and Sustainability, who was also the Director of MBAC during its construction in 1975, points out that many of the features that are included in modern green building design were implemented in the original MBAC construction, long before people were thinking about sustainability.

"When we first built the MBAC we included a lot of design elements that were meant to have long-term impact on keeping operating costs down," says Glen. "And while our decision at the time was based on economics, the conservation aspects of the design features are being implemented today as having both an economic and ecologic benefit. It's a win-win for businesses."

Volunteers needed for beach clean-up May 18

MBAC is seeking volunteers who care about clean beaches, love pancakes, and would like to participate in our inaugural beach clean-up at Santa Clara Point. The clean up is part of our Adopt-A-Beach partnership with I Love A Clean San Diego and will help get the beach clean and ready for summer.

The beach clean-up will be from 8am-10am on May 18 and will take place on Santa Clara Point. It will be followed by a free pancake breakfast prepared by MBAC Assistant Director, Kevin Waldick, for volunteers. Participants should bring work gloves and comfortable shoes.

Please volunteer to come help protect the environment, enjoy some free pancakes, and spend some time with some of your favorite MBAC instructors while getting our aquatic playground ready for summer!

Summer positions available for all levels of experience

The Mission Bay Aquatic Center is now hiring instructors and camp counselors in the areas of wakeboarding, sailing, surfing, windsurfing, kayaking, and stand up paddle boarding. Whether you are a seasoned water sports pro, or you just enjoy teaching and working with kids, apply today for a spot on the MBAC team this summer.

While we need people of all levels of experience to fill all of our positions, it is often a challenge to find instructors who have a high level of skill in particular sports like wakeboarding or sailing. So if you have grown up driving your parent's wakeboard boat, or have spent your summers perfecting your sailing skills, you are especially encouraged to apply.

Potential wakeboard instructors will need to be able to earn a US Coast Guard OUPV Certification (Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel) which requires having experience driving inboard boats. Sailing instructors will earn their US Sailing Small Boat Instructor Certification as part of training to become an instructor. Experienced surf instructors and stand up paddling instructors are also needed for more skilled instructor positions.

But overall the key to being a successful instructor at MBAC is a passion for watersports and a desire to share that passion with others. So for the candidate who doesn't have a huge amount of experience but still loves watersports, a job as a camp counselor might be a better fit.

"If you have a passion for working with kids becoming a camp counselor is the position for you,” says Scott Grant, MBAC Camp Supervisor. “Not only will this opportunity allow you to expand your experience with various water sports, but you will love your job and share your passion for the water with the next generation of surfers, wakeboarders, sailors, and paddlers.”

MBAC participates in Adopt-A-Beach program

Anyone who loves watersports understands the impact of litter and pollutants on our beaches and bays. At MBAC we have always been committed to educating our students and campers on what they can do to help reduce that impact. We are now expanding our efforts by adopting the beach at Santa Clara Point, where we will conduct at least 3 clean-up events per year and we want you to join us!

San Diego Adopt-A-Beach is a program administered by I Love a Clean San Diego and the California Coastal Commission that encourages people of all ages to learn about and actively participate in conserving coastal resources. According to the Adopt-A-Beach website the program is not just about trash. It is about Californians acting together to create lasting solutions to marine pollution. To participate in the program an organization must conduct 3 clean-ups of a beach within 1 year, and participate in a tracking program where data collected from the clean-up is used to regionally track the impact of certain types of debris. If your organization is interested in participating in the program, please see the San Diego Adopt-A-Beach website at www.adoptsd.org.

The first clean-up will be conducting at Santa Clara Point on May 18 in conjunction with Safe Boating Day. There will be food and possibly a few prizes involved so we hope you can join us and help keep our beach clean. Keep an eye out in the May newsletter for more information.

car2go adds SDSU to home area providing cheap and clean transportation to MBAC

car2go has expanded its 36 mile home area to include several parking lots at SDSU providing a new cheap and clean transportation option for the campus community. The ground-breaking car-sharing service, from the minds of the Daimler Innovation Group (think Mercedes -Benz), is an on-demand, pay only for the minutes you use, car rental model that may change the way you think about transportation.

I'll admit that when I first heard the specifics of cars2go I was skeptical. Could this hair-brained idea of car sharing be convenient enough to change the world? Or was it another instance of an idea whose limitations or costs doomed it to good intentions bin. So I visited the website and viewed the short training video where I learned that car2go is as easy as Card >> Code >> Key.

Card- You apply for a membership online using your driver's license. Students only need to be 18 or older to become a member (in contrast to most rental car companies that require renters to be 25 or older.) For a limited time students can register for just $10 (and get 30 minutes drive time free) with coupon code aztecs2013 instead of paying the standard $35 fee. Once you get your membership card (1-2 days if you pick it up at their downtown office or 4-5 days by mail) you are ready to go. Just pull up the car2go app on your phone and find the nearest car. With 300 cars in the San Diego home area there's a good chance that there is a car nearby. Searching as I write this shows that there are 3 cars within short walking distance and 7 within moderate distance. A quick swipe of the card over the dashboard unlocks the doors and starts the process.
Code- Enter your pin number on the dashboard computer. The pin number protects from anyone using your card if you happen to lose it. You will be asked to rate the condition of the car and agree to the terms of service.
Key- The key to the car is right there in the dashboard. Simply put it in the ignition, turn the key and you're off!

Cars charging at the downtown car2go office

Your rental has begun and at a rental rate of 38 cents/minute for a maximum of $13.99/hour. Once you're done with the car, just park it in the anywhere in the home area (Mission Bay, Downtown, Point Loma, Hillcrest, Mission Valley or SDSU), scan your card as you get out, and only pay for the minutes that you actually use. That means that a 25 minute ride from SDSU to MBAC will run you about $9.50 or a 10 minute ride from Pacific Beach to Mission Beach will cost you just $3.80, cheaper than a cab ride! Keep in mind that the 38 cents a minute fee includes insurance, fuel, maintenance, and parking (park in any metered spot in the home area, or parking spot in the approved lots at SDSU and car2go covers the parking).

The San Diego fleet of car2go Smart Cars (also made by Daimler) are the only 100% electric fleet in the 9 North American cities where car2go is available. You are able to check the charge level on the app or website when searching for cars, and you will also be able to see the condition of the exterior and interior as reviewed by the previous user. Smart cars may not be known for their size but in speaking to an SDSU student car2go user who moves her drums around town using car2go, there is plenty of cargo room. And while you may not expect such safety and performance to be a feature of such a compact car, at 2100 lbs, the cars feel much more solid than expected and include many safety features including a tridion roll cage (similar to what's used in auto racing) and 6 interior air bags.

Smart doesn't begin to describe car2go smart cars technology that in the case that you may forget to roll up a window or properly end your rental, the car will send you a text giving you a heads up. Green? Absolutely! Aside from the zero emission 100% electric fleet, car2go works to be responsible stewards of the environment by cleaning the cars with waterless detailing and even rates your driving EcoScore, a new tool which helps to determine the environmental impact of your driving style.

car2go is a great option for SDSU students to commute to class or to drive to classes at MBAC. IMPORTANT! Stand up in support of clean water!

San Diego Coast Keeper is encouraging concerned citizens and Mission Bay users to show up on April 10th to tell the Regional Water Quality Control Board to curb stormwater runoff. The Regional Board will host its adoption hearing on the MS4 stormwater permit with intentions of allowing the public to use its voice and draw a line on how important clean water is to each and every one of us.

The MS4 storm water permit sets the provisions for what the City of San Diego has to do to divert stormwater runoff directly into the ocean and bay without being treated. San Diego Coast Keeper has been hard at work for over a year to include provisions into the permit that help reduce or prevent the amount of pollution that rainwater runoff carries into our bays/oceans and thus prevent us from enjoying aquatic activities.

The last two times the permit has been adopted San Diego Coast Keeper and the community were successful in implementing more stringent requirements into the development plan for stormwater runoff. Jill Witkowski, Coast Keeper's Voice of the Water in charge of policy, strongly believes that if enough people passionate about clean water show up to the meeting, important modifications drafted by Coast Keeper will be implemented in the permit.

Says Witkowski, "Our chances are really great, especially if enough concerned citizens who love to use the water show up and share their stories and experiences about how important clean water is to them."

Of particular concern to Coast Keeper is a provision in this permit that frees the City from liability for pollution that occurs if there is currently a plan to attempt to prevent it.

The new boats have arrived!

There has been a lot of excitement around MBAC in anticipation of the arrival of the new 2013 Correct Craft Super Air Nautiques. Now the wait is over as our four new Super Air 210's and one new Sport 200 arrived last week. At MBAC we do a lot of after-market work on our boats to prepare them for the demanding salt water use in a educational environment. Each new boat will receive about 40 man hours of work by our experienced maintenance personnel. These efforts pay off in the long run and help keep the boats running in tip-top shape.

It’s looking like it is going to be another active year at The Watersports Camp, one of San Diego's most popular youth camps! Most campers know and love our summer program, but spring break camps are a great way to get a head start on another great season. Typically spring camps have fewer campers, meaning smaller groups, more focused attention, and tons of fun. The format for spring camp is the same as summer camp with instructional activities offered during the morning session, and campers get to try out all of our sports in the popular afternoon multisport camp. Each year the Mission Bay Aquatic Center hires watersport instructors, camp counselors, office assistants, and maintenance assistants for the busy upcoming summer season. These summer jobs are a great opportunity for SDSU and UCSD students, as well as students of other colleges, to spend the summer working in a professional and fun work environment. We are seeking hardworking, qualified individuals to join our family and continue to provide a fun and safe educational environment for all.

Employees at MBAC are kept busy throughout the summer and most positions have opportunities to continue as year-round student employment. Working at MBAC is ideal for students who have good availability during the summer, and want a flexible schedule during the fall and spring semesters. Priority consideration for employment is given to current SDSU and UCSD students.

MBAC Instructor, Johnny Fay, featured in short film

Johnny Fay is one of those surf instructors known around MBAC for his amazing longboarding skills and spiritual outlook on life. In January, as he was coming out of the water at La Jolla reef, he was approached by Gabriel Novis, a Brazilian film maker and surfer with many films under his belt. He told Johnny that he really liked his style and wanted to make a movie featuring his surfing. Gabriel said Johnny captured his attention and that his style was different than everyone else in the waves that day. Over the next three days, Gabriel captured enough footage to put together a 6 minute surf film called Concept (A short film about feelings) displaying Johnny’s talent and lifestyle as a San Diego surfer.

Johnny was blown away by the quality of the film and was grateful for how well it was put together. He enjoys the fact that the film can relate to anyone, and not only surfers. It accomplished the goal of letting the viewer connect with Johnny’s perspective, and is not just a film full of surf footage.

Outside of being featured in Gabriel’s video, Johnny has accomplished much in the surfing world. He is currently a top-ranked Southwest division college longboarder, has a number of contest wins under his belt, and will hopefully continue to add to his surfing accolades. Within the Southwest division, Johnny is the only competitor that competes solely on a classic longboard. His opponents ride high performance boards, which are not ideal for Johnny's preferred style of nose riding.

Johnny’s favorite part about surfing is riding the nose, a style of riding famously referred to as toes-on-the-nose or hanging ten. He describes the feeling when his toes are curled over the nose of the board and the wave hitting the back of his knees as feeling lifted, and everything connects. He enjoys the feeling of a stable weightlessness, a feeling that only happens when he’s nose riding.

We wish Johnny the best of luck with his future contests and are thrilled to see him featured in this outstanding short film. We are grateful to have his talent here at the aquatic center and hope that everyone gets to experience his talent and outlook on life and surfing.

Transworld Wakeboarding implements No Vest, No Photo policy

Major wakeboarding industry publication says no more “unsafe” riding on the pages of their monthly.

Transworld Wakeboarding has declared in it's January issue (the 20th anniversary edition), that they will no longer feature photos of riders not wearing a life jacket while riding behind a boat or in a large cable park. This is a huge concept for a sport where safety, in many cases, ends up taking a backseat to style. For a publication that handles the visual side of the industry to say riders must obey safety standards to be featured in their magazine is setting an excellent example for all riders. Like it or not, many amateur riders do follow the lead of their heroes in the magazines and videos. Having all the pros and trendsetters keeping it safe while pushing the limits of the sport will lead to less injury not only for themselves, but for all aspiring wakeboarders and beginners out there.

The magazine is even going so far as to put “Vest Verified” logos on images where the use of a vest may not be completely obvious in the photo. Underneath the large type of “Vest Verified” will read “THIS RIDER IS WEARING A VEST!” They are actively seeking verification of photos before they go to print.

According to the US Coast Guard, “72% of boating deaths that occurred during 2010 were caused by drowning, with 88% of victims not wearing life jackets.” These types of deaths could have been prevented by the use of a life jacket. Statistics show that most cases of boat related drownings are caused by a lack or improper usage of life jackets. Modern life jackets are comfortable and ergonomically engineered and designed for maximum safety, without sacrificing style or comfort.

As proponents of safety and proper life jacket usage, we at the Mission Bay Aquatic Center, applaud Transworld Wakeboarding for being a leader in the Wakeboarding Industry and stepping up to promote safe riding. We look forward to seeing a shift in the attitude toward vests as they continue to save lives and keep boating fun & safe!

MBAC Instructor "sails" from student to instructor

For whatever reason compels you to take a class at MBAC and learn a new sport, many people find that the skills that they learn open new doors and send them down a path they never imagined. MBAC Sailing Instructor Laura Coleman is a prime example of a student whose curiosity about sailing led to learning as much as she could and eventually earning a spot as an instructor.

Laura first became interested in sailing after spending some time on a sailboat with a friend. While her first official task as a sailor was watching out for seaweed, she developed enough interest to sign up for one of MBAC's semester-long sailing classes. She spent a full semester learning beginning sailing, sailing Sabots and Holder 14's, and knew that she was hooked on the sport.

After completing Beginning Sailing, a semester of Hobie Catamaran sailing came next. And when she completed Hobie, she applied the skills she'd learned to renting boats and taking friends out sailing whenever she could. It wasn't long before she realized that teaching sailing was a great way to combine her passion for teaching with her new found love of sailing.

The following summer Laura applied for a summer job at MBAC. Having a more limited resume in sailing she initially didn't stand out in the list of sailing instructor candidates and was passed up in the hiring process. Not to give up so easy, Laura applied as a camp counselor and earned a spot as a Marine Science Counselor. MBAC Assistant Director, Kevin Waldick, says that Laura was an easy hire due to her positive attitude and enthusiasm, and her clear passion for teaching.

"Laura really stood out during the interview process," states Waldick. "Her enthusiasm was contagious and she was clearly going to be a great part of camp."

Laura spent the summer teaching marine science and became a favorite camp counselor to many campers. She also found time to expand her sailing education, and sat in on sailing classes to learn about becoming an instructor.

Since that time, Laura has completed much of her training and has earned a spot as a sailing instructor. She enjoys sharing her experience with others and boasts that her favorite part of teaching is the great atmosphere at MBAC.

If you take a weekend sailing recreation class, or one of the many semester-long class offerings this spring, Laura may very well be sharing that experience with you.

New Nautique wakeboard boats coming this spring!

MBAC is proud to announce that we will be replacing our fleet of wakeboarding boats this spring with all new 2013 Correct Craft Super Air Nautiques! We are super excited to get out and enjoy the latest and greatest innovations in the new 2013 Super Air 210’s. This boat puts out a rampy wake with long transitions, a clean lip and over 900 lbs. of internal ballast allowing us to set up the boat for every level and preference of wakeboarding and wakeskating.

MBAC's New Year's Resolutions

We are all anticipating a great 2013 and many of us are making resolutions to help us lose weight, spend more wisely, or make other positive changes in our lives. At MBAC we have some resolutions of our own to improve programs, offer more services, and become a better organization. We thought we'd share some of those resolutions with you and ask for your feedback on anything we may have missed.

RESOLUTION #1: UPDATE OUR WAKEBOARDING BOATS AND EQUIPMENT

As you read earlier in the newsletter, we are well on our way to accomplishing this goal! Working together with Correct Craft we are replacing our current fleet of wakeboard boats with 5 brand new 2013 Super Air Nautiques! We also just received our shipment of current year Liquid Force wakeboards and bindings and are putting them in service right now. Resolution #1 almost complete!

RESOLUTION #2: REFURBISH OUR SAILING EQUIPMENT

Over the winter break we have been hard at work refurbishing and reoutfitting our sailing boats and equipment. We pulled our fleet of keelboats out of the water (pictured above) and cleaned and painted the hulls. We are currently replacing the sails on all of our Sabots and Lasers and have also been performing fiberglass repairs on our Holders and Hobies to improve your sailing experience.

RESOLUTION #3: BE MORE SUSTAINABLE

In 2013 MBAC will receive certification of LEED Platinum for Existing Buildings by the U.S. Green Building Council. Last year we recycled 75% of our waste stream and our goal for 2013 is to get as close to 100% as possible. We estimate that our solar photovoltaic power system will produce enough energy in 2013 to offset over 1,300 homes and prevent over 82,000 lbs of CO2 from being emitted into the atmosphere.

RESOLUTION #4: OFFER ONLINE REGISTRATION
We have been working very hard over the last few years to find a way to offer the convenience of online registration for our programs. We have successfully launched online registration for our youth camp programs and are looking forward to offering online registration for rec classes, university credit classes and rentals this year.

University Credit Classes enrolling now

If you plan on taking an MBAC class this semester for university credit, now is a good time to add the unit and avoid having to use an add code or submit a late add form. MBAC's semester-long University Credit Classes are one of the best values at MBAC and a great way to get out on the water.

While taking the class for credit is optional, many SDSU and USD students take the class for a grade, or as a credit/no credit elective. SDSU students earn 1 unit of credit in Exercise and Nutritional Sciences and USD students earn .5 units in Education Recreation for each University Credit Class class they complete.

You can certainly choose to show up to the first day and pick up an add code or have a late add form signed, but many students prefer the convenience of registering for the units in advance through SDSU's Web Portal, or USD's MySanDiego, and ensuring their spot in the class (SDSU American Language Institute students must add the unit via late add forms.)

Whether you take the class for credit, or just take it for fun, MBAC's University Credit Classes are a great way to make your semester something special.

Registration for The Watersports Camp opens January 31st

Believe it or not we are already looking forward to another great season of The Watersports Camp! Registration for the 2013 season will officially open on January 31st and we can hardly wait to get started.

This year's schedule will offer 2 weeks of spring camp running March 25-April 5 and summer camp weeks will start June 10th and run through August 30. There will be a special prorated 3-day week July 1-3 to not interfere with any 4th of July plans you may have.

As always, all camps are filled on a first come, first served basis so please be sure to register early to ensure your spot.

Marine trash collecting robot showcased at MBAC

The Rozalia Project was at MBAC this month showcasing it's new trash hunting robot which helps to keep our bays and ocean clean. The stop at MBAC was part of a nationwide tour to raise awareness and educate the public on keeping our waters clean.

The robot found a few items around the dock area of MBAC, including a swim fin, and some kind of fisherman's net, and had no problem bringing them to the surface for removal.

Spring 2013 class schedule available online now

The class schedule for MBAC college credit and recreational classes is now available online at the MBAC website. Students who wish to avoid the hassle of adding classes for credit after the semester begins can now choose their classes on the college credit class schedule and enroll for the unit during the normal add period.

Warm weather forecast for San Diego

The 5 day weather forecast for San Diego looks a little more like you would expect for July than for the beginning of November. While department stores are changing out their Halloween spiderwebs and jack-o-lanterns for holiday garland and mistletoe, the forecast is calling for sunny skies and tempertures reaching 80 degrees.

Rather than grabbing your sled and snowboard, grab a surfboard or paddle board and take advantage of the great conditions we are being blessed with so late in the season. It's a great time to enjoy the bay with smaller crowds, less boats on the water and plenty of available equipment to rent.

Our fall hours are Tuesday through Sunday 8am-5pm. We are closed on Mondays.
