How Not to Be a Spammer When Marketing Your Business

Email is the single most effective marketing tool for many businesses -- and being blocked as an email spammer can be their biggest headache.

It's getting more difficult to get into inboxes, as the battle between spammers and Internet service providers rages on.
If you run a home business, you'll want to be sure you deduct all the relevant home business expenses on your income tax.

However, although there are income tax deductions that are specific to home businesses, not all home businesses will qualify for these tax deductions. The CRA (Canada Revenue Agency) has stringent conditions that determine whether or not a home business owner can claim business-use-of-home expenses on line 9945 of the T1 tax form.

Managing your business, even if it's a real-world store with a physical address, is increasingly moving into the online space. With that comes the need to maintain good online security practices to protect both your own information and that of your customers. The credit does this by paying up to $1,000, based on the increase in an employer's EI premiums paid in 2011 over those paid in 2010.

Workplace Safety Inspections are coming. Is your business one of the targeted ones?

Workplace injuries and fatalities can usually be traced to a few root causes that may vary by sector. The Ministry of Labour’s proactive inspection blitzes on sector-specific hazards are designed to raise awareness and increase compliance with health and safety legislation.

These blitzes are announced in advance and results are reported after they are completed. The ministry tracks each sector to determine if the blitzes result in a long-lasting increase in compliance and decrease in injuries.

Twitter Tip: Time Your Tweets to Reach Small Business

Twitter is becoming increasingly popular with small business owners. And what do they want when they're there? According to The Enterprise Council on Small Business, small business owners want you to focus on providing them with tools they can use to better run their businesses, and keeping them informed about promotions that will save them money.

And because Twitter operates on a timeline, one of the things you can do to increase your chances of the small business audience seeing your tweets is to tweet when small business owners are most likely to be using Twitter. Business owners are most likely to tweet between 1 to 5 p.m., and after 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday are the most popular days for them to Tweet.

The Rules of Venture Capital 2010

The mating dance that entrepreneurs do with prospective investors--venture-capital firms, angels or even just friends and family members--has obvious parallels to the dating scene. On the one hand, you don't want to seem so eager for a term sheet that the investor thinks you're desperate and tries to low-ball you. On the other, you don't want to appear so aloof and arrogant that the investor passes on your deal because he doesn't think you need his money.
