Mercedes-Benz Sprinter adding additional safety

The introduction of the extended ESP package for the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter beginning in January 2012 will improve the Sprinter’s braking performance in critical situations and enhance the safety of passengers and other drivers on the road. ADAPTIVE ESP 9i is replacing the current ADAPTIVE ESP 8.1. This moves helps to solidify Mercedes-Benz stance that safety is one of the fundamental values of the brand. The successor to ADAPTIVE ESP guarantees greater safety. The intelligent ADAPTIVE ESP safety system complements other aspects such as careful driving techniques, effective brakes and sophisticated chassis systems, to achieve the greatest possible active safety. Just like the ADAPTIVE ESP 8.1 safety system, fitted as standard ever since the current Sprinter was introduced, the new ESP 9i takes the vehicle load into account. Depending on the weight and the position of the vehicle’s center of gravity, the ESP sensors ascertain the vehicle load at any given time; this ensures that ESP 9i can stabilize the vehicle with individually modulated intervention action.
This new ESP system will also intervene selectively if a trailer begins to sway, thus helping drivers to stabilize their vehicle and trailer combination. ADAPTIVE ESP 9i has two important additional functionality: Brake Disc Wipe and Electronic Brake Prefill. Brake Disc Wipe accelerates brake response time in wet conditions. In wet weather, light braking pressure is applied to the wheel brake at regular intervals to wipe the film of water off the brake disc. If emergency braking occurs, full braking power is immediately available. This gains valuable stopping distance compared with braking with wet brake discs.
Electronic Brake Prefill ensures that brakes respond rapidly. If the accelerator pedal is released suddenly and quickly, the brake pads will automatically be gently applied so as to eliminate in advance the air gap between brake pad and disc. If emergency braking then occurs, valuable milliseconds will have been won since the friction surfaces of the pads and discs will already be in contact, facilitating effective deceleration. This functionality also reduces stopping distance which, depending on the circumstances, will either avoid an accident or diminish its severity.

The Sprinter City 77 is top-of-the-line city bus in the minibus range. With a length of 8.7 meters, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter City 77 is the current top-of-the-line city bus in the Mercedes-Benz minibus range. Like the body of the Sprinter City 77, the low-floor chassis with a tandem rear axle is an exclusive in-house development by the Mercedes-Benz Minibus product unit.With a passenger capacity of up to 40, it closes the gap between the Sprinter City 65 and the 10.5 m long Citaro K. Compared to the previous top model in this vehicle series, the Sprinter City 65, the Sprinter City 77 has around one meter more length – all to the benefit of the passenger area – ten additional passenger spaces, a continuous, level low floor in the passenger area and a second wheelchair space. It has this high transport capacity thanks to a permissible gross vehicle weight of 6.8 t.
The chassis of the three-axle Sprinter City 77 has an independent suspension all-round and single tyres. Thanks to its comparatively short wheelbase and slim dimensions, even this largest model in the Mercedes-Benz city minibus range is ideal for narrow inner-city streets. In addition the Sprinter City 77 is highly suitable as a shuttle bus for airports and exhibitions, or for inter-urban operations.Painted in arctic white, the Sprinter City 77 is powered by a 4-cylinder CDI diesel engine developing 120 kW (163 hp). A 5-speed automatic transmission is standard equipment. Meeting the Euro V and EEV emission standards (Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle), the Sprinter City 77 is set to be the most environmentally friendly bus in the Winzenhöler fleet. To cater for passengers with impaired mobility, a second wheelchair space with a folding ramp at door 2 was ordered in addition to the standard wheelchair space at door 1.

Mercedes Sprinter rental vans and DEF fluid

DEF fluid, AdBlue, BlueDEF, Urea–I don’t care what you call it–I’ll explain in 5 minutes the useful and practical facts you need to know about this strange but effective new technology. The sole purpose of DEF is to make diesel engines cleaner. DEF (short for Diesel Exhaust Fluid) is injected into the exhaust fumes. This is done by a SCR (selective catalyc reduction) system. The process tremendously reduces oxides of nitrogen (NOx) emissions which are harmful to our health and the environment.
Yes, diesel vehicles used to have a bad reputation for their smelly fumes and the black exhaust smoke from their tail pipes. However, those days are gone–with the use of DEF and the SCR technology of today, we now have a clean diesel engine. Another improvement to the system of these clean engines is timed-fuel-injection and an exhaust filter that catches minute air-born dust particles.Yes, adding DEF fluid may seem like a hassle. But, this easy, short process is something you will want to do–not only so you can enjoy the clean diesel engine for yourself, but also for the environment and our future generations.
Here is what you need to know: DEF is not some difficult thing that can be only be done by the dealer. All you have to do is pop the hood and locate the tank with a cap on it that says DEF. Now, just pour the Diesel Exhaust Fluid straight into the designated tank. Yes, pour it in–just like you do with that windshield washing liquid. The DEF fluid usually comes with a siphon hose, so it is very easy to pour. Try not to spill any of it (as it can corrode copper and brass parts in your vehicle). If you do spill, no big deal, flush it well with fresh water.
You may purchase DEF products in many gas stations, auto parts stores, or even Wal-Mart. Most DEF tanks for a Mercedes Benz Sprinter Van are about 6.6 gallons. You can get a 2.5 gallon refill tank of DEF for about $12.00, which is approximately $4.80 per gallon. So, it will take about $31.00 to completely fill up a DEF tank in a Sprinter Van.
When you do the refill yourself, DEF is not a substantial expense for your diesel fleet. For example, if you own or rent a Mercedes Benz Sprinter Van with 6.6 gallon DEF tank, the tank will last you approximately 8,000 miles–which means you pay only $0.0038 per mile (one third of one cent). If you do 30,000 miles per year, this comes out to be $116.00 per year; a very small price to pay for a better planet and cleaner air, and it might just save you money in health insurance costs as well.

What does DEF fluid do?
DEF is injected in to the exhaust system to reduce NOx (oxide of nitrogen).Is DEF handling dangerous or harmful?
No, DEF is nontoxic and does not pollute. It does not burn nor is it a hazardous material. You can touch it and smell it, and it is harmless to handle. It is sort of like a diluted urine, like when a small animal accidentally pees on you–it is not cool, but you will survive! However, do not swallow or drink it!Does it freeze? Can it be used after freezing?
Yes, it freezes, just like water, at about 32.5 F. The good news is that the DEF tank and lines in our diesel engine Sprinter Vans are heated, so it does not freeze while in the tank. And no worries if it freezes in your garage or trunk, you can still use it again after it thaws.What are Sprinter-Rentals DEF policies?
DEF is not included in your rental. Our mechanics do check that the tank is full before your Sprinter Van is given to you, but while in operation you are responsible for any needed DEF.
