To see it was to love it, so our goal was to create simple daily posts fans could share that passion with their friends.

We asked him a number of questions from real Facebook fans, but this answer was the one we were most interested in:

“What is your favorite SNL song you’ve done?”

Enjoy:

Followers of Chrysler’s official Twitter account (@ChryslerAutos) saw some salty language come their way on Wednesday. The offending tweet read “I find it ironic that Detroit is known as the #motorcity and yet no one here knows how to f—ing drive.”

For a big brand, it’s an embarrassing moment when you drop the f-bomb in public. Behind the scenes, on the floor, behind closed doors, it’s fine. But in public? No way. Not even for a brand whose poster child, Eminem, is an f-ing f-bomb poet.

They removed it (naturally) and offered an apology (naturally), but here’s the kicker. They released this sanctimonious statement on their blog:

This morning an inappropriate comment was issued from the Chrysler brand Twitter handle, @ChryslerAutos, via our social media agency of record, New Media Strategies (NMS). After further investigation, it was discovered that the statement was issued by an NMS employee, who has since been terminated.

Chrysler Group and its brands do not tolerate inappropriate language or behavior, and apologize to anyone who may have been offended by this communication.

Hold on a second… Chrysler had a real agency doing those tweets, and they only have 8,000 followers? They should have been fired a long time ago.

This f-ing controversy is probably attracting more attention to their Twitter account than they’ve ever received, which is absolutely sad. It means they can’t find a sizable fanbase for their product or for the way they talk about their product.

And don’t get us started on tying Chrysler to Detroit, the #motorcity, a city that most people around the world don’t care about, except that it makes the folks behind Robocop look like psychic geniuses for predicting how quickly it would devolve into unstoppable urban decay. No amount of Eminem commercials can stop that. They’re tying themselves (brand-wise) to an anchor.

After benefiting from multiple million-dollar ad spends across TV, radio, and digital, only having 8,000 followers is more embarrassing than dropping the f-bomb.

The offending tweet:

A lot can change in six months.

My needy newborn transformed into a happy baby.

They’re building a large monstrosity of a house on my block that will take about six months to complete.

At the end of a half-year, it’s easy to look at a baby who’s sleeping through the night, or a shiny new house and know that they were worthwhile investments. It took daily work, but you built something good.

The internet has the ability to move you somewhere good in six months. It might happen in less (but that’s a gamble).

But six months worth of photos, videos, posts, tweets, updates, and honesty can go a long way to turn the head of a prospective client, customer, or fan.

Why wait until six months down the road to kick yourself? Kick yourself now. And start.

(You can always tear it back down again. It just takes a few days.)

In case you live under a rock, or have focused all of your waking minutes to “Sheen-Watch 2011,” here was the best moment of Sunday’s Oscar ceremony: The Gregory Brothers (of Bed Intruder fame), making it to the big time with “Auto-Tune the Oscars.”

Two years ago they were three brothers and a wife who enjoyed making music. Today, they’re well-known artists making a parody video for the Oscars.

The moral of the story is that you can either enjoy something (nothing wrong with hobbies!) or actually DO something and leverage social media to propel yourself forward. Nothing is stopping you. Nothing is stopping your company. Except the ringing voice in your head that tells you to stop.

Fight that voice. Make something original and interesting.

Rostand’s classic play Cyrano de Bergerac (as with many movies that have been based on it) often gets boiled down to the wrong simple synopsis: Ugly guy who is good with words helps good-looking-but-tongue-tied guy get the girl.

Yes, this occurs in the story—but that recap misses the essence of Cyrano. His enduring quality was not his fluency or vocabulary. Words alone do not melt hearts, expressions that capture and provoke emotion do. Even when given words to say, the handsome suitor Christian cannot figure out how to express them properly to Roxane.

So if Cyrano is not about the magic of having the right words, what is it about? And what does this have to do with social media? Excellent questions. Fittingly, Cyrano answers them in his final breath.

As he dies, Rostand’s Cyrano declares his personal brand aloud to the stars of the darkening sky. Not his words (though he was eloquent). Not his skill with a sword (though he was fearless and fearsome). Not his large nose (his sole distinguishing physical characteristic). Instead, he declares that there is something so “him” that it will always be his: panache.

Panache. Style. What the kids these days are calling swagger. Panache is rising above the functional and factual doing of some task in such a way that the style of it eclipses the substance.

Cyrano bested an opponent in a sword fight? Who cares— happens every hour of every day somewhere. Wait, he did so while artfully composing poetry aloud that belittled his foe as he dueled?! That’s a story for the ages that spreads quickly by all who are drawn to tales of human drama.

Pedestrian social media is nothing special. It happens every hour of every day all over the world. Creating artful social media with panache—taking risks with style and subject matter—is so rare that when it happens, it spreads quickly. And keeps spreading.

Take a look, for instance, at the work of Joe Petruccio, an artist I first discovered at KnicksNow.com. He’s doing a recap of every Knicks game this season in a visual style unlike any sports reporting I’ve ever seen:

I’m not even a Knicks fan—but I look forward to every new painting Joe produces because of the uniqueness of his expression. It’s moving. It’s bold. It’s different. And he’s definitely earned my R-E-S-P-E-C-T.

What would courageous social media look like for you or your company? Don’t hope for pass-along, inspire it. Post with panache.
