The Yatta home is one of six MCF locations in Kenya. It is unique in all of Africa because it ministers to 14 to 20 year old girls. It offers vocational training to young women, some of whom are frightened young mothers. While their babies are cared for in the nursery, they receive education and training to equip them with skills by which they can earn a living once they leave Yatta. Currently, there are 300 women being restored to health and receiving training.

The Centre is located in the open countryside, 2½ hours from Nairobi. It consists of several buildings: academic classrooms, dormitories, a nursery, and training facilities for tailoring, hairdressing, hygiene, and cooking.

WHO ARE THE “YATTA GIRLS “?

Every girl has been rescued from life on the streets. They have been forced into child labour, raped, or prostituted by their families. They are alone and desperate. These women, often with babies, are accepted into Yatta and given medical attention, counseling, and a special diet. A two year vocational training program has been especially designed for them. They are taught skills including hairdressing, beauty therapy, tailoring, home economics, and entrepreneurship. Their babies thrive and often remain permanently in the care of MCF. An average of 70 young women graduate every 2 years.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

The Yatta Girls need a chance to remake their lives. Funds donated to these girls are used for food, education, health care, training, and assistance in finding a career or micro financing their own small businesses. A tax receipted donation will make a huge difference. The girls are asking for your support in remaking their lives. Please consider sending a donation (a one time gift or monthly installments).

Mandy MacFadden is empowering artistry in Africa.
The former Sacred Heart Catholic High School graduate and current owner of Salon Decorum has donated $635,000 worth of hairdressing equipment and tools through the Hair Cares initiative she and her salon team created in the spring.
Her team of eight became aware of the Mully Children’s Family organization through a client who had just returned from a mission trip to Africa and told them about the women, many of whom have been rescued from the sex trade, studying hairdressing as a means to make a fresh start.
“Being a female entrepreneur, it just seemed to make sense to help,” Ms MacFadden said at her Leslie Street salon. “The support we have received is overwhelming and it has continued to snowball since we started the program.”
She canvasses local salons, hair schools and hair academies for the collection of tools, products and equipment they are no longer using. Ms MacFadden also works with various beauty supply outlets and manufacturers for donations and purchases tools at a discounted price.
Through presentations to well known hair product companies, she recently had 10,000 tubes of L’Oréal hair colour donated, 460 tubes of Pureology products, 31,000 bottles of Redkin product, towels, furniture, shampoo sinks and hair stations. Brushes, combs, mannequin heads and styling tools have also been collected.
“We go downtown to learn a new hairstyle and leave the mannequin head to be tossed because it is too embarrassing to carry on the subway, but this school can use them,” she said. “Many of us want to be up-to-date with the latest tools, but there is noting wrong with the old ones, so they can be donated as well.”
The salon also hosts charity events periodically to raise funds to purchase what the school needs most to help women trying to get back on their feet. African hand-made jewelry is also sold to help raise funds.
“I find people in this industry are so passionate,” she said. “To share that passion is very fulfilling.”
Even though she is amazed at the progress the campaign has made, she still aims to do more. In the future, she hopes to create a micro finance program that would provide start-up funds to the African women who want to start a salon.
It is an initiative that takes a village, she explained, adding she is amazed at the support the campaign has already received in such a short period of time, but noted more is always welcome.
