Nuts and bolts: Military & Commercial Fasteners Corp. in Manchester Township turns 40
By LAUREN BOYER
Daily Record/Sunday News
Updated: 06/01/2012 03:19:13 PM EDT

Not much has changed in the fastener world since Craig Siewert's father-in-law and two other men started their company in 1972 out of a garage.

	Or so it seems.

After all, a nut is still a nut.

	A bolt is a bolt.

And the screws produced and distributed by Military and Commercial Fasteners Corp. - where Siewert serves as president - look strangely similar to other screws you'd find anywhere else in the country.

	But take a closer look.

The fasteners inside this facility on Grumbacher Road in Manchester Township, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, do much more than just hold stuff together.

They save lives - lives, for example, of military pilots forced to bail out of doomed aircraft.

Fun fact: MCF makes some of the metal components used in fighter jet ejection seats.

(JASON PLOTKIN -- Daily Record/Sunday News)

"That always has to work," said Matthew Malkie, the company's marketing director. "No room for error there."

One part, in particular - a tiny square of metal capped with a spike - can be the difference between life and death.

It's called a tip penetrator, and it sits atop the pilot's seat.

If the cockpit's dome doesn't open in an ejection scenario, this component - no bigger than a half dollar - breaks through the plexiglass, freeing the trapped soldier.

"There's no piece of the military we're not touching," Malkie said.

That includes components for nuclear-powered submarines and fasteners to attach protective armor to Humvees and Bradley Fighting Vehicles, manufactured just miles away at BAE Systems' West Manchester Township plant.

In fact, the local defense contractor, formerly BMY, was an early customer of MCF, which started as a distribution-only operation in Jack Zielinski's garage.

A year later, he and partners Michael Kin and Peter Zerebny bought a building at 46 S. Pershing Ave.

The facility didn't have a loading dock.

"It was kind of crazy," Siewert said. "They went and got some old used tires, and they just piled them up in a mound behind the truck. .¤.¤. They would push kegs of bolts onto the tires."

In 1978, the company relocated to a 6,000-square-foot building at 5 Grumbacher Road that served as the company's headquarters until 1999, when it bought the building next door.

MCF manufactured its first product in 1997 after experiencing quality and delivery issues with a local supplier of convex washers.

That year, MCF purchased a used CNC machine to produce the washers for Stewart & Stevenson in Sealy, Texas.

"We just started figuring out what we could make cheaper than we could buy," Siewert said. "Whatever we can make at a lower cost and remain competitive, we make here."

Today, the business employs 85 people and owns 17 machines used to manufacture 30 percent of the company's inventory in-house.

And make no mistake - not all of MCF's stock is on the front lines of a battlefield.

	And thank goodness for that.

The defense industry is struggling, plagued by dwindling contracts and federal budget cuts. MCF offsets this turmoil by diversifying its commercial portfolio.

More and more of what the company manufactures or distributes is in our own backyards.

Most tractor-trailers carrying loads down Interstate 83 contain MCF bolts, Siewert said.

Ever bought a wheelbarrow at Lowe's or Home Depot? The fasteners for the Ames True Temper were counted and packaged at MCF. "You can look at most of our parts," Siewert said. "You wouldn't even guess it's stuff we did."

One year, the company created chess boards as Christmas gifts using fasteners wired together to form each piece.

Every now and then, they have a little fun.

And 40 years later, the puns haven't expired.

"He picks up the phone and says, 'Craig's nut house!'" Malkie joked.

"I just say, 'You're screwed!'" Siewert snapped back.

And that's the nuts and bolts of it.
