Freshman Trey Gantt (Lassiter/Marietta, GA) got the day going scoring his first collegiate goal in the opening minutes of the game to give Tech the early lead. But another freshman was the star this day. Freshman attackman Michael Thomas (Westminster School, Atlanta, GA) led the way with 7 goals for the Jackets. Some other young guns for the Yellow Jackets squad also got in the mix as sophomores Ben Anzovino (Harrison/Marietta, GA), Connor Houlihan (St. Anthony’s/West Islip) and Colin Granger (Leon/Tallahassee, FL) all added a goal each. Sophomore attackman Nick Picon (Cardinal Gibbons/Boca Raton, FL) scored twice for the Jackets and rookie Mick Stapleton (Woodstock/Woodstock, GA) Junior Jeff Delong (Philips Academy/Athens, GA) assisted on three scores and senior Ryan Jarriel (McLean/Vienna, VA) added two assists of his own.

<a href="http://media.mcla.us/uploads/Screen-Shot-2012-02-09-at-5.05.40-PM.png class="overlay" title="#14 Alexander Roe">The defense was solid in the game as they held Ole Miss scoreless for over three quarters of play. In the goal freshman Matt Sommerfeldt recorded 5 saves and was not really challenged. The aggressive play of the defense led by junior Philip Georgakakos (Holy Innocents/Atlanta, GA), Zach Ilisevich (Georgetown Prep/Potomac. MD) and Casey Fleming (North Forsyth/Gainesville, GA) and John Dirito (Pinecrest Academy/Norcross,GA) were solid in the keeping the Rebels offense at bay all game long.

<a href="http://media.mcla.us/uploads/Screen-Shot-2012-02-09-at-5.05.01-PM.png class="overlay" title="Old Miss">

Coach Lovic on the game, “I was happy with our performance today. Coming off a rough start versus Kennesaw State we had to re-group have a solid effort as a team. I was proud of defense all day and it was nice to see the offense generate some solid looks all day. We are a young team so each time on the field I expect us to learn and get better. ”
The Yellow Jackets next host divisional foe Alabama (1-1, 0-0 SELC Central) on Friday, February 10 followed by another home contest versus North Carolina State (0-1, 0-1 SELC North) on Sunday, February 12.

PROVO, Utah — The No. 1 BYU Men’s Lacrosse team will seek to defend the National Title as they open their 2012 season by playing three games in a three-day period.

The first game will be at home against the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Thursday Feb. 9 at 7:00 p.m. MST North University Lacrosse Field in Provo.

“We have been working hard to prepare for three games in three days,” said BYU Head Coach Matt Schneck. “We are excited for UNLV to come to Provo for the first time in many years and to continue our annual tradition with Boise State and Simon Fraser. We anticipate an exciting weekend of lacrosse.”

The Cougars will head out early Friday morning to Boise where they will face the Boise State Broncos on the famous blue field of Bronco Stadium.

Boise State Head Coach Paul Rocchio said he and his team are excited to face BYU.

“Coach Schneck and his staff have been very helpful and we are looking forward to it,” Rocchio said. “We have a very young lacrosse community here in Boise, and our boys want to be nationally competitive but we can’t do that unless we play nationally competitive teams. I think it’s great that Coach Schneck is willing to travel and play us.”

BYU’s third game in as many days will feature BYU vs. Simon Fraser University of British Columbia, also at Bronco Stadium.

Simon Fraser Head Coach Brent Hoskins said the matchup will serve as a good benchmark for his team early in the season.

“We’ve started off the season ranked No. 18 and we are looking to get back in the top 10,” Hoskins said. “We’ve built a respectful rivalry with BYU in the past and they are a team we always look to get on our schedule. We try to schedule fairly aggressively each season to prepare our team for an MCLA title.”

BYU vs. Boise State will begin at 4:00 p.m. MST Friday; BYU vs. Simon Fraser will face off at 2:00 p.m. MST Saturday.

The Brigham Young University Men’s Lacrosse Team is a proud member of the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA).

SAN RAFAEL, Calif.- The Seawolves got off on the right foot to their Spring 2012 campaign, edging North Bay NCAA Division II rival Dominican University 12-11 in a scrimmage on a warm Saturday afternoon in San Rafael.

“This was a team win. Everyone played great and did their jobs. We won this game as a team,” said captain Matt D’Angelo.

Kyle Riddle had three goals and three assists and D’Angelo added four rips and two dimes to fill the the stat sheet as Sonoma earned its first win against an NCAA opponent since last fall’s scrimmage against the same team.

“It’s great to go out as a club team and earn one against the D-II school down the street,” said D’Angelo, a fourth year senior. “Just to have that experience going forward will definitely benefit us.”

The Wolfpack burst out on fire out of the starting gates, with Matty “The Genius” Gillan feeding long stick midfielder George Porter from X for the game’s first goal. Gillan was filling in at attack for and injured Casey Wood, who led the team in points last season with 43.

“With the chemistry we saw down there today, there’s a possibility that we might use (Gillan) down there more,” said head coach Doug Carl.

Gillan, who was a starting attack-man at La Costa Canyon High, excelled in the starting roll, finishing the day with four assists.

Riddle and D’Angelo took the scoring reigns from there, boosting the Seawolves to an 8-4 halftime advantage. Dominincan bounced back quickly out of the half scoring on a SSU turnover to make it 8-5 just 45 seconds into the third, but was quickly quieted by a Ryan Heidrich top shelf laser just two minutes later.

The defense continue to hold strong through the third quarter, despite an injury to starter Tony Carvutto. Bob Federighi fared well as the fourth defender, his effort highlighted by a desperate save made in goal when starting keep Mike Clothier came up just short fielding a ground ball behind the net at the seven minute mark.

Goals by freshman Blaine Sando and another blast by D’Angelo (completing his hat trick) gave the Seawolves an 11-7 advantage going into the fourth quarter. D’Angelo seemingly put the game away with a low to high rip early in the fourth, but the Penguins were not going to back down on their home turf feebly.

Dominican responded to a five goal deficit by netting two goals within three minutes of each other, prompting a time out by the Seawolves with the score 12-9. Momentum and the home crowd on their side, Dominican came out of the timeout roaring scoring twice more to come within one goal of tying the game with 1:30 left.

“There were times when the defense was great,” said the redshirt junior Federighi. “and then there were times when we were poor. We need to be great all four quarters.

Barring collapse and heartbreak, the SSU defense held strong forcing arid shots dropped balls during the final posession, highlighted by the efforts of Andrew Day, Porter and Federighi. The Seawolves would hold on to the one goal advantage as the clocked ticked down, en route to the teams first victory of the spring.

While technically a scrimmage, the win will not reflect in the team’s final standings. However, according to Carl, it will give them a boost of confidence going forward.

“I have confidence that we’re going to play well,” “this is a smart team, this is tight team and they’re going learn from their mistakes, we made a lot during the fourth quarter.”

The Seawolves will travel next week to Seattle, Washington for the first official game of the regular season. Taking on the University of Washington next Sunday. Fans at home may follow the game with the team’s live stream or official Twitter page @NomaLax.

MANKATO, Minn- New additions to the Maverick Spring 2012 team are guaranteed to make this season one to pay attention to. Their roster features 18 new freshmen and 20 returning players. Among those returning players are Ben Maclean, All-Conference Defenseman 2008, and Brent Walby, two-time All-American Attackman, who turned in their uniforms to play new roles off the field as assistant coaches.

The schedule for the Mavericks has changed this season as well with the addition of their new Nate Chalberg Memorial Field making home-field advantage that much sweeter. This season the team will finish its regular season by hosting five games, which the team hopes will spring some real competition. “Home games! All I can say is BRING IT. Fans get ready for some great games and come cheer us on!” said senior attack #19 Ryan Nelson.

In preparation for this upcoming season, the team began strength and endurance training and joined one of the many summer leagues Minnesota has to offer. With new motivation comes unrivaled confidence and the team needs to demonstrate these skills against Wisc-Madison, St. Johns and Central Florida in the first six games alone.
-more-

“We are looking forward to playing the U especially. They are our rival and it’s been a battle in the past. This year we have the talent and work ethic to claim a victory,” said junior #9 Max Dornfeld, one of the three new Spring 2012 captains.

High expectations fall on the 18 new arrivals to the spring roster to fill the spots left by last year’s departing seniors.

“The new faces have had an extremely large impact on the team in and out of practice. More competition in practice brings a higher level of intensity and desire from everyone to make that top spot. This has lifted everyone’s skill to the next level,” said Nelson.
Since the program’s start in 1992, the team has been building a foundation worth taking note of and has been climbing the national ranks for the past five years.

“It’s increasingly more difficult to advance as we near the top. Each year marks a new level of sacrifices and commitment from the guys earning them more success. The sky is the limit for this group of young men and I am excited to see how far they can take it,” said Mankato’s head coach Dylan Dickey.

The Mavericks are embracing the new changes to their program and plan to bring that energy and confidence to the field as they open their regular season with a scrimmage against St. Olaf this Friday at 7 p.m.

Fellow freshman attackmen Rob Garvey (Ridgewood High School – Ridgewood, NJ) and Alex Prince (Bolles School – Jacksonville, FL) also had successful debuts with 2 goals and 2 assists of their own.

Contributing to the Mustangs fast start was the face-off play of both John Sabo (Culver Academy – Plymouth, IN) who won 7 of 9 face-offs and Trey Williams (The Westminster Schools – Atlanta, GA) who won 6 of 8. Chad Kehoe (Bolles School – Jacksonville, FL) was ferocious defensively at LSM and collected 6 ground balls in addition to the first goal of his career on a fast break.

Defensively, close defenseman Niko Lundeen (Gulliver Preparatory – Miami, FL) and goalie Cary Nelson (Gilman School – Cockeysville, MD) led the way in limiting the Red Raiders scoring opportunities.

We saw just how talented our freshmen are with the ball. I was also really impressed with our team defense. Hopefully with a good week of practice we can eliminate some of the full field recovery sprint work that dominated the second half.”

The Mustangs will travel again next weekend to San Marcos, TX to face the Texas State Bobcats (2-0, 1-0 LSA South).

Now that Easton is jumping into the lacrosse world with both feet they hired ex-MCLA The Lax Mag photographer Zach Heffner (Verdict Photography) to head up their photography and video promotions. Not only does he have a great eye for detail, Zach also has a national championship ring from his playing time at Virginia, so he understands lacrosse. Zach was the photographer behind the iconic MCLA The Lax Mag Kiss cover from March 2011.

With some help from Easton, Zach put together short documentary about a trip to introduce kids to lacrosse at a Native American camp in Shiprock, New Mexico. It’s a pretty powerful story and well worth 12 minutes of your time.

Enjoy.

The Men’s Lacrosse Team at the University of Colorado at Boulder will kick off a fresh season with the return of Coach John Galvin, new faces and expectations for the team of spring 2012.

BOULDER, Colo. – The No. 9 University of Colorado men’s lacrosse team finalizes its spring try-out to get well equipped for their first preseason game on Feb. 18 at Colorado Mesa University at 1:30 p.m. The first regular season game is on Mar. 9 in Orange, Calif. against Chapman University at 7 p.m.

With 25 freshmen added to this year’s roster, the players are eager to start the season. The team is looking forward to the season and has a positive outlook because of the excellent coaching staff, with the return of head coach John Galvin, and a strong array of new players.

Coaches Galvin, Marty Taffet, and Ben Weisz are hoping to create a strong foundation working towards a better team dynamic.

“My expectations are the small things. Focusing on the detail-oriented goals and getting used to the system and the way we want to accomplish the big achievements. Whether that’s winning games or just moving forward, we have a lot of little goals,” Galvin said. “We’re trying to create a culture and better bonded team. The previous coaches did a great job, but we are trying to build a foundation off of what we have.”

Freshman midfielder Austin Colaizzi is excited that Galvin returned to CU after two years away from the program.

“I hope to learn as much as possible from Coach Galvin and a lot of the senior guys,” Colaizzi said. “With the right work mentality, I’ll try to be able to carry it on for the three years after this and try to lead the team.”

The upperclassmen players are just as motivated because they already feel the potential of the talent offered by the additional players on this season’s team.

“I’m super excited for the season because we got a lot of really young kids and they are all really passionate. More passionate than I have seen in a while,” said senior defenseman Danny Schatz. “It’s good to know they’re as dedicated to you as you are to them.”

“I think finally we can make a great run as a team,” said senior midfielder Thomas Appel. “We have some great coaching back so we’re going to be a little bit stronger in that department, which is awesome. I think as a team we will do pretty well and go pretty far in our conference as well as the national tournament.”

Assistant coach Marty Taffet said he is looking forward to the team’s Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference schedule.
“The games we have circled on our schedule has to be Utah in April, followed by the Colorado State University game at Mile High,” Taffet said. “Two tough opponents right before we head into the RMLC Tournament will provide a good measuring stick of how far the team has progressed over the season and hopefully it will build some momentum for a deep run at nationals.”

Taffet, who once was a CU lacrosse player on Galvin’s team, also expressed his excitement to work with his former coach.

“I think this season is going to be different than past seasons because of Coach Galvin’s return to CU. I think his two years away from CU helped him get a better idea of what he wants from players, his assistants and everyone involved with the program. With this new approach compared to past seasons, I think you are going to see a tougher, more blue collar lacrosse team.”

In 2011, the CU men’s lacrosse team finished with an 11-6 record. The wins last season came against the teams of Kansas, Utah, Simon Fraser, Minnesota – Duluth, Oregon, Arizona, Texas Tech, Boston College, Connecticut and New Hampshire. Keep up with the CU Buffaloes stats this year at www.mcla.us.

Buffs lacrosse fans can follow the team throughout the 2012 season through redhotbuffs.com. Former CU lacrosse players Colin Rosenblum and Steve Keyes are continuing their love of lacrosse and the Buffs through their Club Ball documentary, which can be viewed on the Red Hot Buffs website. Also, keep an eye out for apparel found on the website.

His four goals were matched by his four assists for an 8 point afternoon. Skuce is fine tuning his game in preparation for his team’s Friday showdown with SLC DII champion Cal State Fullerton.

His tally earned him 2nd Team WCLL Attackman honors as well as a MCLA DII Honorable Mention All-America selection. Last year, he upgraded his stats to 39, 23 and was named the WCLL DII Offensive Player of the Year. He again returned as a MCLA DII Honorable Mention All-American.

Friday night’s game looks to be a clash with the Titans. The Titans of Fullerton hold a two game win streak over the Gaels. In each game the high scoring Titans dominated the stat sheets registering 14 goals per game. Can the Gaels slow the down the Titans’ Chris Cole (56,36)? Is this the year that St. Mary’s makes enough noise to get an invite to the National Championships?

Captains for the upcoming season are L to R: senior #42 Mike Becken, senior #9 Joey Slattery, senior #17 Matt Madden and senior #15 Drake Peterson.

“I am very impressed with the leadership this group of captains has put forth. The four of them make up one of the strongest group of captains I have seen in my years with this program. They exemplify the work ethic that is the heart of what we do as a team. ,” said Bulldogs assistant head coach, Sam Litman.

When asked about the upcoming season and the competition they are going to face, each captain is highly enthusiastic about the team’s capabilities, even with the grueling schedule ahead.

Drake Peterson, an Ohio native, has been with the Bulldogs for three years. Peterson says, “Our team is extremely experienced. Our greatest strength is our teams’ overall athleticism and speed.”

Peterson also emphasized the players’ abilities to play different roles on the team and do so “at a very fast pace.”
For Matt Madden, it’s his fourth year on the team. Playing middie, he feels the teams’ strength lies with the goalie and the overall defense. “Our attack unit is very strong, which helps a lot,” Madden said.

Returning All-American Defenseman Mike Becken who has been with the Bulldogs for four years also believes in the team’s strong defense. “Along with the seniors, we have a very talented young group of guys that compliment the senior class well,” said Becken.

As of current preseason rankings, the Bulldogs play seven of the top twenty teams. According to the Bulldogs schedule, they play six of those games within a 15-day time span. Currently, the Bulldogs are ranked #15 in the nation by Lacrosse Magazine and #16 by the Inside Lacrosse coaches poll.

In order to keep a strong defense, the team needs to take extra strides to stay healthy this season.

“I believe our biggest challenge this season is our schedule. We have to make sure we stay healthy, and continue to work extra hard on and off the field,” said Becken.
“We probably have one of the toughest schedules in the whole country,” agrees Joey Slattery, who has played for the Bulldogs for three years.

Slattery is a returning two-time All-American Goaltender. Slattery also has high expectations for his team.

“With our strong defense, we should be able to hold the top teams to very few goals, hopefully,” said Slattery.

Each of the Bulldogs captains finds it a privilege and honor to be named leaders for their team.

‘Especially when we’ve been chosen by our teammates,” said Slattery.

Assistant coach Litman said,“I’ve enjoyed watching all of these players grow over the past years, and it is exciting to see how far they have come. Most of all, I can’t wait to see where they can lead this team.”

Head coach Clark added “these guys have great intangables and that has been recognized by their teammates and our staff. They set great examples for their teammates both on and off the field”

The Bulldogs open their regular season on February 18th against Marquette University at Vandais Sports Center. On February 19th, they face off against Iowa State University.

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Coast Guard Academy Men’s Lacrosse Head Coach, LCDR Brian Krautler, announced today that three players have been selected to serve as team captains for the Bears’ upcoming 2012 season.

Cadet 1/c Andrew Breen (Falls Church, VA/George Mason), Cadet 1/c Nicholas Zablotny (Annapolis, MD/Broadneck) and Cadet 2/c Tim Wyderko (West Bloomfield, MI/Orchard Lake St. Mary’s) were selected by the coaching staff and a vote by their teammates to serve as team captains for the 2012 season. This will be the first time each player has served as team captain.

“Andrew, Nick and Tim are great leaders – on and off the field,” said Head Coach Brian Krautler. “They embody what it means to be Coast Guard Academy cadets and I’m more than confident in their ability to lead this year’s team. 2012 is a big year for us, we sent a great deal of talent from the Class of 2011 out to the fleet, but we have a talented and experienced group of 1/c cadets that are hungry to compete and win a championship. We also have a number of younger players who will have to fill holes and play prominent roles for us in 2012,” Krautler noted. “The leadership our three captains provide will be essential to the growth and success of our team this year and our staff could not be more pleased with the selection of these young men as our team captains. These cadets know being a captain is an important responsibility and this group is looking forward to leading this year’s team and representing our program, the Coast Guard Academy and the Coast Guard.”

“One of the most unique aspects of the Coast Guard Academy, and the reason I love coaching at such a place, is that the school develops leaders of character. All seven of our seniors are a product of this leadership training, and indeed, are all outstanding leaders. Clearly, our team not only looks to our captains for guidance, but looks to the entire senior class for guidance. It makes for a team atmosphere that I am honored to be a part of.”

Cadet 1/c Andrew Breen has been an integral part of the Bears’ defense for the last three years roaming the pitch as a long stick midfielder (LSM). His defensive prowess last year earned him 2011 PCLL 2nd Team All-Conference LSM. He spent his summer training period aboard USCGC STINGRAY, an 87-foot Coastal Patrol Boat out of Mobile, AL before reporting to Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM to finish out his training. Aboard STINGRAY, he worked on Damage Control and Officer of the Deck qualifications. While underway, he participated in law enforcement boardings and search and rescue cases in the Gulf of Mexico. At Sandia, Breen worked in the Robotics Laboratory and got great hands-on experience in engineering design. A leader on and off the field, Breen organized a team fundraising effort in 2011 that raised more than $1,100 for the LT John M. Senyard Endowment. A Mechanical Engineering major, Breen has also excelled in the classroom where he was named a 2011 MCLA Scholar-Athlete. He continued that success this past fall, registering a 3.88 GPA and a ranking in the top 4 percent of his class. He is currently serving as the Regimental Morale Department Head. Breen became the 3rd member of the Mike Fredie “Hard Hat” Union with 10 ground balls vs. Stonehill College on April 09, 2011.

Cadet 1/c Nicholas Zablotny, a proud member of the “Old Bay Crew” (the sobriquet for our Maryland player contingent), has been a mainstay of the Bears offense the last two years. The midfielder notched a career-high 16 points last season, as well as scooping 22 ground balls. Zablotny spent a portion of his summer as an intern at the National Security Agency (NSA) before reporting aboard USCGC SYCAMORE, a 225-foot Seagoing Buoy Tender out of Cordova, AK to finish out his training program. Like Breen, Zablotny has also found success off the field and achieved a 3.88 GPA for the fall semester. An Electrical Engineering major, he is ranked in the top 7 percent of his class in overall order of merit which factors in both academics and military performance. He is currently serving on the Bravo Company staff. Interestingly, Zablotny’s Electrical Engineering Senior Design Project involves designing and building a dynamic positioning system – a platform that will maintain its position in the water, mimicking the systems on certain vessels and oil drilling platforms.

Cadet 2/c Tim Wyderko is the anchor of the Bears defense and earned the rare honor of selection as a team captain as a junior. “Tim is an excellent one on one defender with great intuition,” said Coach Krautler. In 2011, Wyderko’s on-field exploits netted him PCLL 2nd Team All-Conference Defensemen honors. He started his summer with the Cadet Aviation Training Program and was exposed to Coast Guard aircraft and missions at the Aviation Training Center in Mobile, AL. He also had the opportunity to sail around New England with classmates and Head Lacrosse Coach, LCDR Brian Krautler, as part of the Coastal Sail Training Program. He finished up his summer training period serving as Cadre and running the newly arrived Class of 2015 through “Swab Summer” – the initial boot-camp style indoctrination period. He is a Government major and served as the Information Systems Officer last semester. Wyderko became the 2nd member of the Mike Fredie “Hard Hat” Union with 10 ground balls vs. University of New Haven on March 27, 2011.

The Bear’s pre-season preparations got underway upon returning from Holiday Break in early January. The team’s first contest of 2012 will take place on Saturday, February 25th at 1:00 PM versus Southern Connecticut State University at Veteran’s Memorial Park in West Haven, CT. Next up, the Bears will travel to Palm Beach, FL from 2-6 March, where they will host a Diversity Open House for the local BRIDGE (Building Relationships to Initiate Diversity, Growth and Enrichment) affiliate and face Palm Beach Atlantic, Grand Valley State, Elon and Emory, in the 2012 Sailfish Shootout.

As the smallest of the five U.S. service academies, the Coast Guard Academy offers the elite higher education, rigorous professional development, and honor and tradition of a military academy but with a more personalized approach.

The Coast Guard Academy offers an integrated life experience which emphasizes academics, physical fitness, character and leadership, in order to graduate officers of the highest caliber. Graduates go directly to positions of leadership in “The Shield of Freedom,” one of the most admired organizations in the world. The Academy also features an impressive teacher-student ratio and picturesque waterfront campus that instills a traditional small college feel.

Cadets devote themselves to an honor concept and graduate to work at sea, on land, in the air, and even in space, in meaningful careers of selfless service to others.

SELC TO HONOR CONFERENCE HERITAGE BY NAMING SILVER ANNIVERSARY TEAM

Atlanta, GA: The 2012 season marks the 25th year of competition in the SELC (SouthEastern Lacrosse Conference). Founded in 1987 and originally consisting of 6 members, the SELC has grown to become the largest collegiate lacrosse conference in the country, encompassing 40 teams, 8 states, and nearly 1400 student-athletes.

In recognition of this milestone, the Executive committee of the SELC Board of Directors felt it appropriate to compile a 25th Anniversary All Conference Team honoring the players who have made notable contributions to the Conference throughout its’ history.

SELC President Doug Horn has appointed SELC veterans and past Presidents Sonny Pieper and Buff Grubb, along with longtime SELC contributor as a player, coach, and official, Alex White to head up the selection committee. The committee will be calling on all SELC teams to identify individuals for consideration for the Silver Anniversary Team.

As might be expected, records of the early days of SELC competition are limited and incomplete and present the Selection Committee with its’ greatest challenge. “We don’t want to slight any deserving individuals and will be asking for help in identifying those players who were dominant when the SELC was young,” says Grubb. “It’s our hope that the alumni bases of teams competing in the late 1980s and early ‘90s will embrace the opportunity to get their “legends” some well deserved attention.”

The goal of the committee is to announce the SELC Silver Anniversary Team in mid March, 2012 and the SELC hopes that as many members as possible will be available to be honored at the 2012 SELC Championships, scheduled for Johns Creek, GA over the weekend of April 27 – 29, 2012. Also as part of the festivities on championship Sunday there will be a SELC alumni game at Northview High School at 10am.

New London, CT – The United States Coast Guard Academy Men’s Lacrosse team is excited to announce the arrival of a strong in-coming group that is part of the Class of 2015. The Bears were challenged to fill several positions vacated by graduating 1st Class cadets now serving in the fleet, but a successful recruiting season seems likely to fill the gaps. Fourteen new cadets round out the list from nine different states all across the country.

Head Coach LCDR Brian Krautler said, “We are very excited at the level of talent of this year’s incoming class. We were able to find a great group of driven and accomplished players from all over the country, at every position, to push our returners and make an immediate impact to the lineup.”

“The goal for this year’s recruiting class, as always, was to find quality young men to serve in the Coast Guard. Our next goal was to add overall depth to our team while bringing up the skill level,” said Coach Krautler. “As a coaching staff we feel like we have far exceeded those goals.”
“This is a group of well-rounded student athletes that possess the character, work-ethic and hunger to represent the Coast Guard Academy, serve their country and become Commissioned Officers in the United States Coast Guard. We are very excited that they and their families have agreed to join the Coast Guard Academy Men’s Lacrosse family.”

This year’s recruiting class has the ability to produce immediate impact players for this upcoming year. These fourteen talented incoming fourth-class cadets will join a Bears team that lost eight players to graduation from last year’s squad that finished 2nd of eight teams in the PCLL Division 2.

Associate Head Coach Gary Weller notes, “We are very excited about adding talent and athleticism to our core of returning players. We will have a nice combination of senior leadership and talented underclassmen that can take our program to the top of the PCLL.”

Here is a closer look at the incoming lacrosse players from the Coast Guard Academy Class of 2015:

As the smallest of the five U.S. service academies, the Coast Guard Academy offers the elite higher education, rigorous professional development, and honor and tradition of a military academy but with a more personalized approach.

The CGA offers an integrated life experience which emphasizes academics, physical fitness, character and leadership, in order to graduate officers of the highest caliber.

Today the MCLA (Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association) announces the launch of it’s dedicated iPhone app. “MCLA Lacrosse” brings you the most comprehensive lacrosse app on the market. With over 200 teams and over 20,000 Players and Alumni, the MCLA is represented by some of the largest universities in the U.S. The MCLA boasts the biggest college lacrosse footprint in the US.

“Our iPhone app is one more way to get the MCLA in front of more people. We now have several ways someone can find the MCLA; web, print and mobile.” said Agent Ogden, the MCLA iPhone app designer. “It’s pretty simple to navigate around and look at scores, player and stats following the design of MCLA.us. It’s 6,000 active players and 1,300 current games right in your pocket.”

MCLA president Tony Scazzero, “This is yet another landmark along the MCLA trail of growth. The iPhone app is another example of our collective effort to present the MCLA to the broader lacrosse community.”

MCLA.us web developer, Will Duderstadt remarks, “From a technical standpoint, this entire app is powered by the MCLA.us API. The continued promotion and publishing of a publicly available API by the MCLA is giant leap forward for a league. Connecting core stats and data with the media, fan sites and teams promotes our games and teams to the growing lacrosse community.”

Features of the app include: Latest News Headlines, Scores, Standings, Players and Scoring Leaders. Ogden continues, “This is only the beginning, we will add features to the app over time along with some other MCLA surprises coming in the near future.”

Never miss a score from around the league with the MCLA app on your iPhone or iPod Touch.

Duluth, MN (January 5, 2011). After finishing the 2011 regular season with a 7-8 record (4-1 in the UMLC conference) and winning their 14th UMLC title, making their 10th appearance in the MLCA tournament, the Univeristy of Minnesota – Duluth men’s lacrosse team will take it to the road once again for another highly competitive season.

The 2012 Bulldog schedule includes five UMLC in-conference match-ups and seven out-of-state non-conference teams. The out-of-conference game matches the Bulldogs against seven teams who also took part in the 2011 national tournament. In the preseaon rankings, the Bulldogs are currently ranked at #15.

“This schedule is a high-level schedule. Not only will we get to see some great out-of- conference competition, but we are also looking forward to another season of great UMLC lacrosse,” said the Bulldogs Head Coach Frank Clark.

The University of Minnesota Duluth opens their regular season with UMLC conference match-ups before heading west to California. The season officially starts on February 18th against Marquette University at Vandais Sports Center and taking on Iowa State University on February 19th.

The following weekend on February 25th, the Bulldogs will face off against the University of Minnesota. In 2011, the teams met twice. It was a close match-up in last year’s regular season game with the Bulldogs losing 8-7 in overtime to the Gophers. The Bulldogs returned the favor with a decisive 11-6 victory in the UMLC Championship game.

The Bulldogs will make a repeat trip to the Husky Dome against St. Cloud State University on March 3rd. In the 2011 season, the Bulldogs beat the Huskies 24-4.

Next, the Bulldogs find themselves on the road to California for three matches starting on March 10th. First, they’ll play against Cal Poly (#7), followed by Chapman University (#3), and then University of California Santa Barbara (#12).

March 17 will pit the Bulldogs against defending National Champion Bringham Young University (#1) for what is to be an intense rematch after the 2011 season where the Bulldogs lost to BYU in Provo 11-10.

Their travels will continue on in March when the Bulldogs find themselves in Arizona to match up against Arizona State University (#2) on March 23, and then University of Colorado (#11) on March 25th.

Coach Clark commented “March will no doubt be a challenge, but one we are looking forward to.”

On April 1st, the Bulldogs will be back in Minnesota, but this time in the Twin Cities, as they face off against Mankato State University.

The Bulldogs will round off their regular season with a home game in Duluth, Minn., on home turf against the University of Illinois on April 15th.

Prior to learning of an issue concerning the over payments to the past Treasurer, the SELC started to review past finances using a local CPA. Immediately prior to the start of this process the past Treasurer advised the past President and the new President that he paid himself funds above what he was owed and advised that he planned to repay the SELC what it was owed. At that time the amounts were unconfirmed. Since then the Executive Committee has being ascertaining exactly how much is involved and work out a re-payment plan and consider what other actions to take. SELC officers have also consulted with an accountant and attorneys, and obtained financial records of past operations, as they exist, from the past treasurer. The Executive Committee has also revised internal accounting procedures to better monitor the expenditures of its funds and assure that such problems will not occur in the future.
The SELC will continue this process in order to try and recover such amounts and avoid such issues in the future.

In light of the allegations made public yesterday regarding actions of the former SELC treasurer, the MCLA has expressed its concerns to the SELC leadership and has offered its knowledge and resources to the SELC board as they determine the appropriate path forward. While we are deeply concerned that such apparent deceit has affected an MCLA conference, please be mindful that, within the framework of the MCLA, all conferences are self governing entities with respect to their operations and budget. We will continue to stay abreast of the the situation and provide help to the extent requested and permitted by our own bylaws and regulations. We encourage all teams and conferences to take this opportunity to review their procedures and implement any preventive control measures they deem appropriate.

The MCLA has confidence that the current SELC leadership will move to a resolution of this matter and continue to act in the best interests of its members.

(Denver, CO) – “Stay hungry”. These are the words head coach Dave Leach concluded the 2011 spring lacrosse season with. Every returning player this fall no doubt was fueled by this, as the team embarked on a much more grueling and intense fall-ball season than anything planned for the lacrosse team since its inception. Typically fall-ball seasons are designed to “weed out the weak”, Coach Leach’s plans were to only have the resilient left by the end of it. This was especially the case as the team’s numbers grew exponentially. Deductive reasoning meant the path to four new captains was underway.

Brandon Do, Jeron Fleming, T.J Nixon, and Sam Bishop have been honored as elected team captains, alongside injured, but highly-dedicated, returning captain Ted Emery. These five individuals have so-far proven they have what it takes and will lead the Rangers through a 2012 Spring-season which, in one word, will be; revolutionary.

The Rangers are back to classes on the 17th of January, and immediately we will see these committed individuals come together and rise to the challenge of 6am workouts, Olympic athlete diets, and study-hall sessions.

32 players strong, the Rangers will first meet Denver University (club) on Sunday, February 12th under the lights at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium, in a scrimmage game to prepare for the greater part of the season. Following a 10-17 loss last time these two teams met, the Rangers will be reluctant to just let this game go. The following weekend will see the last of the scrimmages with the University of Wyoming taking on the Rangers Saturday, February 18th at North High school. They call these matches ‘friendly’ but it is difficult to gauge the Cowboys’ approach to the game, after eight total matchups in recent years in which they have not won a single one. With a total aggregate of goals at 82-34, will Wyoming look to mimic the approach the Rangers will take in their Denver University scrimmage?

Three games into the season something monumental will happen. For the first time ever in the team’s history, the Rangers will fly, out of state, in style, to Los Angeles, California where they will spend spring break and play four lacrosse games. Opponents include Occidental College, California State-Fullerton, Biola University, and California State-Long beach. The spring break trip is not only mammoth in the team’s ambition, but the Rangers also understand that business is business and although the focus is around lacrosse and representing Regis in a professional and courteous manner; swimsuits, flip-flops, and sun glasses will be a requirement. Strength and conditioning coach Rob Odom, and ironman assistant coach Tyler Hardy both declined comment however when asked if the team would eat at In-n-Out Burger.

Immediately following the Rangers return to Denver, the playing field will evolve into a proving ground. As the gears shift into overdrive, these subsequent two games against divisional opponents will largely determine the post-season fate of the team. First on Sunday March 18th versus Metro State College and the following Saturday March 24th against the Colorado School of Mines, these two games may just make or break the season. Give these games away, and the rest of the season might be an uphill struggle.

The Rangers then will travel in luxury again, as the away games versus Fort Lewis College, Western State College, and Montana state college will be traveled-to in a 55-passenger coach charter bus. The team will look to close the regular season with a final division game against the University of Northern Colorado on Saturday April 28th, at home. In the fall, the Rangers fell to the Bears 7-6, which is significant in terms of the Rangers’ defeat last spring.

Creighton University and St. Mary’s College are two other notables on the schedule this Spring, along with Central Washington University, and CSU-Pueblo; Regis Lacrosse will compete with opponents from five of the ten conferences within the MCLA. A chance to be noticed by Top-25 voters, or the stage for a dose of high profile humility… at 16 games, this is undoubtedly the most challenging season Regis lacrosse has ever scheduled, and how successful it is, will be at the mercy of the players.

Sacrifice is something all successful athletes understand. Giving up sleep to go work out, or missing out on seeing a movie to work on their shooting, or that which might take the most discipline, skipping that cheese pizza for a tasteless chicken breast all while acting as if the dessert buffet doesn’t even exist. The 2012 Rangers, are extraordinarily focused. These fine gentlemen don’t only live and breathe a synergetic lacrosse lifestyle; they’re hungry for the sweeter-side of life.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

San Francisco, CA – December 19, 2011 – Inside Lacrosse announced Monday that it will be increasing its commitment to the Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) through a content arrangement with Agent Ogden and Karl Lynch, co founders of MCLA The Lax Mag, that will include increased coverage of the league in Inside Lacrosse Magazine and on InsideLacrosse.com. Starting with Inside Lacrosse’s February 2012 issue, MCLA content will be included in every issue, in addition to a weekly spring column on InsideLacrosse.com, to be provided by Ogden, Lynch and the MCLA The Lax Mag staff.

InsideLacrosse.com will also be compiling and publishing the weekly MCLA Coaches Poll for the 2012 season in a new arrangement with the league. With its content now being featured within the pages of Inside Lacrosse,
Ogden and Lynch have dissolved MCLA The Lax Mag as a stand-alone magazine.

“The MCLA is a great example of lacrosse’s continued growth, and Inside Lacrosse is glad to be stepping up its commitment to the league,” said Inside Lacrosse vice president and editor-in-chief John Jiloty. “With the MCLA Coaches Poll for 2012 and now with added content in Inside Lacrosse Magazine and on InsideLacrosse.com <http://InsideLacrosse.com>, we’re excited to be increasing our coverage and enhancing our relationship with
the league.”

“This was an arrangement among the MCLA, Inside Lacrosse and Agent Ogden. All three parties agreed that by working together we would have a greater impact for the MCLA players and teams than existed previously,” offers Tony Scazzero, MCLA President. “The quality of coverage MCLA teams are accustomed to with MCLA The Lax Mag will now be combined with increased exposure offered by Inside Lacrosse. I am convinced this opportunity is a successful combination of resources that will benefit the MCLA membership during the 2012 season and in the future.

As part of the relationship, Ogden and Lynch, become the producers of MCLA content that will be featured in the pages of Inside Lacrosse each month and on InsideLacrosse.com.

“Karl and I built a successful magazine from scratch and we are very proud of that,” Ogden said. “The people over at Inside Lacrosse have been some of our biggest supporters over the years. So when we initiated talks with Inside Lacrosse to work out an arrangement it was fairly easy. We just wanted more people to learn about the MCLA. This is the best way to do that.”

Said Lynch: “This is a great opportunity to take the MCLA brand of lacrosse to the mainstream lacrosse fan. We are thrilled that the MCLA worked closely with us to make this possible. We hope that all of our fans embrace our new roles.”

Added Jiloty: “From a distance, I’ve always been impressed by MCLA The Lax Mag. They’ve done a great job all the way around — from content to graphics to photos. So having their expertise in the mix for MCLA content in Inside Lacrosse Magazine and on InsideLacrosse.com <http://InsideLacrosse.com> is going to be great for us, the league and its fans and players.”

This season will be trying for the young Skyhawks and their new coach, former Fort Lewis Lacrosse All-American Daniel Riecks, but it should be an adventure well worth it, the Sky is the limit for these Hawks. With 17 games scheduled, not including playoffs, the young Skyhawks’ new season promises to be an unprecedented challenge. Big challenges lead to big rewards; however, and the schedule offers some exciting contests.

Leading off the season is a trip down HWY-160 to scrimmage Adams State, the new NCAA Division II neighbor in Alamosa, on 2/11. Also a very young team, it will be exciting to see the two programs grow up together and develop a natural geographic rivalry. After that, the season officially gets underway in Albuquerque on 2/24-2/25 with games against traditional rival DI New Mexico and another DI test from Texas Tech.

The Skyhawks’ annual Spring Break trip to California gives the team a chance to warm up both on and off the field against UC San Diego (3/6), Cal St. Long Beach (3/8), and Cal St. Fullerton (3/10). All three opponents are coming off of strong winning seasons, so the Fort will be looking to make a statement about where they stand nationally while having some fun in the sun.

The RMLC season gets going with a highly anticipated game against Northern Colorado in Greeley on 3/24. This contest is always a physical match up as distinct styles from the Northeast and Southwest corners of the state collide, though UNC has definitely held the upper hand of late. Following that game, the Fort rolls down I-25 to play CSU-Pueblo, newly returned to the RMLC DII West division, for the first division game of the year for FLC on 3/25.

Ray Dennison Memorial Field in Durango should be all thawed out for the Skyhawks’ first home stand against the always-competitive RMLC teams from Utah State University and Regis University on 3/30 and 3/31 respectively. Then the team heads back on the road to Orem, UT for the annual contest against Utah Valley University on 4/7 that often determines which team makes the RMLC playoffs. Following that game is a scrimmage against the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, which will provide the young Skyhawks a chance to experience the speed and precision of one of the RMLC DI’s elite programs.

The Battle of the Mythical Birds (which really needs some kind of annual trophy) is in Durango this year, as the Fort Lewis Skyhawks take on the Westminster Griffins at home on Friday, April 13. The weekend stays competitive as Colorado School of Mines is in town on 4/15 and the Fort looks to avenge its playoff defeat from last season. The fans should have plenty of throat lozenges for this weekend, as it is going to be the big one.

The next weekend, the Fort has an exciting weekend in Denver scheduled, a perfect compliment to the weekend’s big showcase games in the lacrosse Mecca of the West. On 4/20 the Skyhawks play under the lights at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park against Metro State. That RMLC game will set the stage for the next day’s game against The University of Denver’s club team. While this game is officially only a scrimmage, the game will be played at lacrosse-only Peter Barton Stadium at DU, a grand venue for the program to showcase its young talent and exciting style to the Denver lacrosse community. That night, CU and CSU play at Invesco, and the Skyhawks will be in attendance to watch one of the best rivalries in lacrosse.

The regular season marathon comes to its glorious end back in Durango against natural rival Western State on 4/27. This game, the night before FLC graduation, will be Senior Night as our senior class will be honored for their many contributions to the team, hopefully they will honor themselves with a final conference victory as well.

Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference Playoffs begin on May 3rd in Grand Junction, and the Skyhawks hope to be one of the three teams from each division in attendance. A favorable showing, and a quality national ranking in the MCLA (Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association) Coaches Poll, could lead the Fort to the MCLA National Championships being held in Greenville, SC on May 15-19.

Support the Skyhawks all season long, on fortlax.wordpress.org, facebook, and twitter (@fortlax, @fortlaxcoach), and if you see a Fort Lax player around the town, give them a high five, they always appreciate that.

With a multitude of pre-season events including scrimmages with NCAA programs and tournaments from the Vegas strip to the peaks of the Rockies, RMLC programs abound have kept busy.

DIVISION I

Brigham Young, most notably, holds their #1 rank in the RMLC, after a storied 2011 season in which the MCLA crowned them Champions. The Cougars continue their success into the Fall with a successful “Best of the West” Tournament in Las Vegas along with defeating two NCAA DII programs; BYU received unanimous votes for No.1.

Colorado State, 2011 Conference Champions, also had a great Fall season, losing only to a Denver University scrimmage-day with the younger Pioneers; and winning the “Pumpkin Shootout” over CU. The Buffs are again led by John Galvin, who returns after 2 seasons away. Utah State returns to the RMLC again, a provisional team, and New Mexico returns after a great year back in the Conference.

RMLC DI Preseason Poll

1. Brigham Young
2. Colorado State
3. Colorado
4. Utah
5. Utah State
6. New Mexico

DIVISION II

Westminster College and Northern Colorado, both very active in the off-seasons competed-in and won un-official tournaments on both sides of the Rockies. Suggesting the 2012 #1 and #2 might just be the same as the 2011 Championship. The Griffins, reigning Conference Champs, continue to gain steam and take the top honor for the RMLC Division II.

Fort Lewis College and Utah Valley come in at third and fourth in the Division. Both past-MCLA National Tournament participants had exceptional recruiting efforts and will field-teams worthy of their stature. Both are led by new Head Coaches, as Dan Riecks returns to the Fort and Larry Sullivan steps in after Kevin Perkins resigned in October.

No. 5 Colorado School of Mines and No. 6 Montana State lead the pack of the other six RMLC Division II hopefuls. Metro State and Regis also have high aspirations for 2012. Beyond the top-four, many of these programs have, in recent seasons, been outside looking in. Within these six organizations, is there a sleeping giant? One that shall rise above and stake a claim?

RMLC DII Preseason Poll

1. Westminster
2. Northern Colorado
3. Fort Lewis
4. Utah Valley
5. Colorado School of Mines
6. Montana State
7. Metro State
8. Regis
9. Western State
10. Colorado State-Pueblo

Lindenwood University – Belleville to Follow in Footsteps of Lindenwood University Lacrosse Program

Belleville, Ill. – As Lindenwood University has found much success as a member of the MCLA, Lindenwood’s newest campus in Belleville, Ill., will attempt to find the same success.

In January of 2010, Lindenwood – Belleville announced the addition of men’s and women’s lacrosse to its roster of sports. With the announcement, the University took steps to create a program that could compete at a high level from the start. “Lindenwood’s St. Charles campus has done an outstanding job in building all of its athletics programs, and lacrosse is one of the many success stories,” said Scott Spinner, LU – Belleville Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. “We hope to use their success as a model to build a solid foundation at our campus.”

Lindenwood – Belleville opened its doors in 2003 and built enrollment as an extension location of Lindenwood University in St. Charles. By the fall of 2009, LU – Belleville had developed well beyond simply offering night classes for adults and had begun to offer day classes and its own roster of degree programs. In that same year, men’s soccer took the field as the first team in school history to compete.

In 2010, the University continued its rapid growth as it competed in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA). In that year, 11 new sports began competition with seven teams making trips to national championship tournaments.

2011 marks another year of growth as men’s and women’s lacrosse joins men’s and women’s bowling, wrestling, baseball, softball, and field hockey as the new sports to begin competition.

Dan Mertzlufft, new men’s lacrosse coach, is not new to the MCLA or to Lindenwood. Mertzlufft was a four-year starter for the Lions that won four-consecutive GRLC Conference Championships, and earned All-Conference recognition in his final two seasons as a Lion. Now, as the head coach of the upstart LU – Belleville program (nicknamed Lynx), he plans to recruit and compete at a very high level. “Though we are just starting out, I have high expectations of the team and myself,” said Mertzlufft.

The Lynx will play most of it games on the road this season. Next season, the team plans to relocate to a newly remodeled stadium, complete with brand new artificial field turf, located next to the soccer field. The University is set to begin a multi-million dollar renovation of the stadium facility, which will serve as the home for lacrosse, football, and field hockey.

MH-65C CG 6505 Tribute Graphic
This tribute graphic, located on the right upper-thigh, honors all the Guardians lost in this fatal crash, but most especially Captain Tom Nelson who was a member of the Coast Guard Academy Class of 1988 and a lacrosse player. This graphic depicts an MH-65C helicopter and all four aircrew positions – it reminds cadets of the serious and inherently dangerous nature of our business, as well as the sacrifices that Coast Guard members and their families make each and every day.

On the night of 4 September 2008, Coast Guard MH-65C helicopter 6505 was conducting an over-water training mission south of Honolulu, Hawaii. While delivering a rescue basket to a Coast Guard 47-foot Motor Lifeboat something went terribly wrong and the aircraft descended to the water with two pilots, a flight mechanic and a rescue swimmer onboard. On this fateful night the following men lost their lives:

Pilot: Captain Thomas Nelson
Co-Pilot: Lieutenant Commander Andrew Wischmeier
Rescue Swimmer: Aviation Survival Technician First Class David Skimin
Flight Mechanic: Aviation Maintenance Technician Second Class Joshua Nichols

United States Coast Guard Core Values
The Coast Guard core values appear on the inner waistband of the shorts. The core values are more than just Coast Guard rules of behavior. They are deeply rooted in the heritage that has made our organization great. They demonstrate who we are and guide our performance, conduct, and decisions every minute of every day. Because we each represent the Coast Guard to the public, we must all embrace these values in our professional undertakings as well as in our personal lives.

Honor – Integrity is our standard. We demonstrate uncompromising ethical conduct and moral behavior in all of our personal actions. We are loyal and accountable to the public trust.

Respect – We value our diverse work force. We treat each other with fairness, dignity, and compassion. We encourage individual opportunity and growth. We encourage creativity through empowerment. We work as a team.
Devotion to Duty – We are professionals, military and civilian, who seek responsibility, accept accountability, and are committed to the successful achievement of our organizational goals. We exist to serve. We serve with pride.

The Coast Guard’s slash or “Racing Stripe”
The stripe image on the side of the shorts matches the “racing stripe” design on the MH-65C’s high visibility international orange paint scheme that uses a wide white bar to the right of a narrow blue bar. The familiar and distinctive red slash or “racing stripe” did not appear on our cutters, boats and aircraft until relatively late in our history. In the early 1960s, America’s visual image had been neglected both inside as well as outside the U.S. Since image building played an important role in the recent election of President John F. Kennedy, the industrial design firm of Raymond Loewy/William Snaith, Inc. was hired to redesign the exterior and interior of the presidential plane. Kennedy was so pleased with the new design that he approved their proposal for improving the world-wide visual identification of the U.S. government.

In 1964, the firm recommended that the Coast Guard adopt a symbol or mark that would be easily distinguished from other government agencies and easily applied to ships, boats, aircraft, stations, vehicles, signs and printed forms. Their design was a wide red bar to the right of a narrow blue bar, both canted at 64 degrees. Centered on the red bar was a new emblem.

“Bear in the Sailor Hat” logo
The left leg of the game short is adorned with the “Bear in the Sailor Hat” logo. The legacy of one of the most dramatic rescues in Coast Guard history is a constant reminder to Cadets of the importance of fitness, teamwork and perseverance. The long time Academy mascot, the Bear, was chosen to honor the renowned Coast Guard Cutter of the same name. In 1897, the Revenue Cutter Bear embarked upon one of her greatest missions. After a busy summer she was heading south for the winter, and put into Seattle along the way. There she was met with the news that eight whaling ships with 265 men aboard were trapped in the ice off Point Barrow, the northern point of Alaska. President McKinley personally asked if Bear would try a rescue dash, although no vessel had ever sailed north at that time of year. Bear accepted the challenge, and sailed north on 27 November, with a volunteer crew. She drove northward into the cold, stormy seas for many days, finally grinding to a halt in the ice at Cape Vancouver, Nelson Island. She was still 1200 miles from the whalers. Three of her officers, Lieutenants Jarvis and Bertholf and Surgeon Call voluntarily left the Bear to trek through across the ice to the whalers. Their remarkable journey took 120 days, averaging ten miles a day. For 800 miles they drove a herd of reindeer ahead of them, to feed the trapped men. They were just in time. When the rescue party arrived with the herd of reindeer, the whalers had run out of food and were reduced to eating their boots. Bear plowed forward again in the spring, finally arriving off Point Barrow in July. She was promptly trapped in the ice herself; the pressure of the ice bulged her decks and threatened to break her rudder. Only by an all-hands effort to cut the ice away from her hull was the ship saved. With the rescue completed, she sailed south and broke out of the ice.

University of Texas at Austin students will soon be able to enjoy club and intramural sports on a newly renovated Clark Field, thanks to a plan created by and leadership commitments from two Houston families with strong ties to the university.

Former chairman of the University of Texas System Board of Regents and university alumni H. Scott Caven Jr. and his wife Vivien made the first significant gift to launch the renovation of Clark Field. Their desire to upgrade the field, make it accessible to more students and redevelop it to accommodate lacrosse club sports was done in memory of their son, Scotty Caven, a University of Texas Plan II Honors student whose athletic passion was lacrosse, and in honor of the many Caven family members who have been involved with the university for more than 90 years. In recognition of the Cavens’ dedication and leadership, along with their steadfast support for the game of lacrosse, Clark Field has been renamed the Caven Lacrosse and Sports Center at Clark Field.

“This day is special for my family and me as we help create a permanent home for men’s and women’s lacrosse. I am honored that through the generosity of many contributors, UT students will enjoy the wonderful experiences that many of us alumni had, participating in a variety of sports on this historic field in the heart of campus,” Caven said.

Caven Lacrosse and Sports Center

The other major commitment to the Clark Field renovation came from university alumni Gary and Sylvie Crum, who have long provided generous financial support of women’s athletics, the McCombs School, the Division of Recreational Sports and the Texas Exes, among other schools and divisions at the university. The Crums’ daughter, Clayton, is a co-captain of the women’s lacrosse team.

“The extraordinary vision and generosity demonstrated by the Cavens and Crums allowed this project to move forward quickly,” said President Bill Powers. “Thanks to them and other generous supporters, our students will be able to enjoy a first-class lacrosse and sports facility for years to come.”

The $4 million Clark Field renovation was made possible through $3 million in private gifts and $1 million from the Division of Recreational Sports. Construction began July 18, 2011. Fundraising efforts are continuing as the project nears completion. Located west of San Jacinto Boulevard and south of East 21st Street, the renovated field will feature a synthetic turf playing surface, a refurbished track, new exercise stations and a new pedestrian bridge across Waller Creek.

In addition to serving as a championship-quality lacrosse venue for the men’s and women’s lacrosse clubs, the facility will continue to serve the dedicated cadre of students who enjoy jogging, walking and working out in this great outdoor space. As the last green space on campus, the Caven Lacrosse and Sports Center at Clark Field will provide students new recreational opportunities in an enriched outdoor setting.

The field will now feature synthetic turf for play, a refurbished track, a concentrated exercise station and a multipurpose building including restrooms, said Jennifer Speer, associate director of the Division of Recreational Sports. The renovations also include improved security lighting, a new bridge over Waller Creek and a lightning prediction system.

“We are here for students and want to make sure they have access to high quality facilities,” Speer said. “It’s one of the last green spaces on campus and was once a very popular spot for joggers and Frisbee. We hope that comes back.”

The renovated Clark Field will also serve as home to UT’s lacrosse teams, who will move from Whitaker Fields more than a mile away. Both president of the men’s team Scott Marmillion and president of the women’s team Ellice Tan said they hope the new location will encourage students to attend more games.

“I see the Caven Lacrosse and Sports Center at Clark Field as a catalyst for the growth of our sport, not just within our university but within the nation,” Tan said. “We cannot express enough gratitude for all the behind the scenes work that produced the Caven Lacrosse and Sports Center at Clark Field.”
