Winter is here, and while it may not last long, it is a wonderful time to create lasting family memories.

With the New Year here, you can choose a new hobby. Learn to knit socks and scarves. Check out the Madison Library for the Glitter Knitter meetings. We have lots of hobby books in the 745 section of your library. Old Music for New Ears is a new DVD ,soon to be available, that is just wonderful. It introduces children to a wide variety of instruments and songs. Don’t miss it!

With the days getting shorter and cold, opportunities are there to be inside the house with the kids. Let them put on a puppet show. Search “puppet plays” in our system and see all we have to offer from making puppets to providing the plays. Put on a storytelling night. Let your children tell you stories. Find out about the new Storytelling Club at the Madison Library. Have them build a fort of cushions , tables, and sheets—go inside and read to them. This is a great time of year to create family storytimes. Let the temperature be “coolish” so snuggling feels good; make a fire or light candles; cook some popcorn or bring cookies—everyone gather for the story. We’ve got some great books enjoyed by all ages. The third book in the “Peter Pan” series by Dave Barry is in. If you haven’t been introduced to this series, it is a must. It begins with Peter and the Starcatchers. This series is a great read aloud and is fun for all ages. The audio CD of The Misadventures of Maude March has been a big hit. Books one and two of this series have been ordered. The Water Horse by Dick King-Smith is very sweet and on its way to being a movie—as is Wee Free Men by Terry Pratchet. Boys will love our new Captain Raptor books as well as the popular Alex Rider Adventures, beginning with Stormbreaker. Boys and girls alike love the series by Erin Hunter, Warriors and Warriors: The New Prophecy.

I could go on and on. And so can you. Visit your nearest library and find out how 2008 can be a great year for your family!

December is known as “the most wonderful time of the year— there will be parties for hosting, marshmallows for toasting and caroling out in the snow? Hearts will be glowing when loved ones are near.” This is truly a wonderful month . There is a lot of hustle and bustle, but underneath it all, the purpose is to share love. What a great intent!

Here at the Madison County Library System, we too share in the season’s delight. We all have lots of wonderful new holiday titles, and books to help with your parties and gift giving. There are many activities happening at the various branches. Check the calendar to find the right program to suit your needs. We have many craft books with children’s projects in them, and we’ll be glad to show them to you when you come in. I know that Santa is about this month. He’ll be at the Ridgeland Library December 4, at 5:00 p.m. He’ll be coming to the Madison Library on December 11 at 5:30.

The Youth Storytelling Club for ages 10 – 16 at the Madison Library was a big success. This is a club that will teach the members to actually tell stories. Diane Williams was just wonderful. There were 17 participants for the first meeting. It’s hard to express what they experienced, but they left with huge smiles and warm hearts. The next kick-off event with Diane will be January 31 at 4:00. I strongly encourage anyone with a child aged 10 to 16 to come to the next event and see what it’s all about.

It was brought to my
attention recently that November is really a “sensual” month.
We are not locked inside by the cold, so you can hear the crunch of
the leaves, feel a promise of frost in the air, smell wood burning in
the fireplace, and taste warm apple cider. The joy of families
getting together warms the heart. Your libraries can help you
celebrate this special month.

How about getting
your kids involved in cooking the Thanksgiving feast. It’s a
great way for them to be a part and how about the math and reading
skills they will use! Check out Cooking with Children by Marion
Cunningham. Select a book enjoyed by a variety of ages, maybe Peter
and the Starcatchers by Dave Barry or The Spiderwick Chronicles
by Tony DiTerlizzi. Turn off the TV; Grab a bowl of popcorn, or some
knitting, and read in front of the fire. What memories!

The 88th
celebration of Children’s Book Week is November 12 -18. People
learn and grow in their everyday lives by reading. So much
information today is available through books, the Internet,
newspapers and magazines. Children’s Book Week is an
opportunity for parents and educators to introduce books of all sorts
to children to help encourage their love of reading. Check out the
Madison County Libraries and find out what they offer for this
special week. The Madison Branch will be taking a poll of favorite
children’s books. The results will be printed in the next blog.

The Madison Branch
is starting a Youth Storytelling Club for ages 10-16. Besides being
just plain fun, the members will learn active listening, be applauded
for taking risks and will build personal confidence. There will be
two kickoff events led by professional storyteller, Diane Williams.
Diane has performed for fourteen years as a storyteller, written
books, and created audiotapes. She is a dynamic individual who will
demonstrate to those interested just how fun storytelling is . The
first kickoff event is Tuesday, November 27 from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00
p.m. Please mark your calendars for this date in November if you
have a child between the ages of 10-16. You’ll be glad you did!

Stop in at your
nearest library and check out the new books and tapes. And have a
great “sensual” November!

The beginning of school is under our belts; the days begin to get darker earlier; the weather gets cooler; and our thoughts turn to our fall festivals and holidays. It’s exciting! Your libraries have many fun activities planned. Halloween is in the air. There is a special Ghost Story Festival around the campfire in Camden for all ages, and Halloween fun to be found in all the branches. Some great classics are: Pumpkin Moonshine, Bony Legs, The Bones of Fred McFee, and It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Don’t miss The Scarecrow and His Servant by Philip Pullman, and Scarecrow by Cynthia Rylant. Look for Mercy Watson: Princess in Disguise by Kate DiCamillo and the Ghosthunter series by Cornelia Funke. If they want scary stories remember to look for Short and Shivery by Robert D. San Souci and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz Check out our craft books for fun fall craft projects to enjoy with your children.

There are many books coming out as movies this fall and winter. The Dark is Rising movie is coming out in October and is taken from the Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper. It is excellent. Philip Pullman’s book, The Golden Compass is the first book in a trilogy entitled His Dark Materials. This movie will be released in December along with Dick King Smith’s, The Water Horse. The Spiderwick Chronicles by Tony DiTerlizzi is a fabulous series that is fun to read will be released in February.

Hi! My name is Ms. Lizzie. I am the Children’s Specialist at the Madison Library. I will be sharing news with you for children all over the county in the elementary grades.

September is here, and we’re all settling into a new routine. I hope you’ll make it a habit to regularly visit your local library. We always have exciting new programs and services to offer. Our regular programming will begin the week of September 10. National Library Card Sign-up Month is September. Your libraries will be honoring this event is a variety of ways. Check out the calendar for all the branches. You can attend any event you choose.

September is National Potato Month too. In honor of both Library card sign-up and potatoes the Madison Library will be offering a special “potato” storytime for all ages on Thursday, September 27 at 3:30. If you show your library card, you can enter the drawing for door prizes. It’s sure to be fun.

It is just as important to read aloud to children of elementary school age as it is to read to those of preschool age. Try reading one chapter a night of a book of your choice. It’s a great way to share the classics with your children. Not only will you be spending quality time together, you’ll also help develop listening comprehension skills.

Check out the website of the Children’s Book Council for information on great books and authors for a variety of ages.

We wish you a grand and glorious fall and look forward to seeing you soon in our libraries.
