My Dream App Announces Guest Judge Competition for Bloggers

BOSTON, Massachusetts - My Dream App (http://mydreamapp.com), a competition in which contestants compete for the chance to have their software ideas turned into real Mac OS X applications, announced a chance for bloggers to guest judge during an elimination round alongside other high-profile bloggers today.

Since launching three weeks ago, My Dream App (http://mydreamapp.com) has drawn over 2,700 idea submissions and over 650,000 visitors. My Dream App enables Mac users without programming skills to have their software ideas turned into killer apps while also enabling software lovers all over the world to decide which finalists make the cut.

Winners of the blogger guest judge competition will offer opinions on finalists during the second week of voting along with influential bloggers John Gruber of Daring Fireball, The Unofficial Apple Weblog’s Scott McNulty, John Siracusa of Ars Technica, 43 Folder’s Merlin Mann, and Kottke’org’s Jason Kottke. One guest judge spot is offered for the author of the best blog entry, one for the blogger that brings in the most traffic, and one spot will go to a blogger entrant selected at random.

“Great software is developed with the user in mind. My Dream App lets the users themselves into all the fun. Software thought up by everyday Mac users and developed by some of the best Mac programmers out there? What’s not to like?”, said Scott McNulty, lead blogger at The Unofficial Apple Weblog (tuaw.com).

My Dream App creator Phill Ryu has assembled an all-star guest judge team for the five weeks of eliminations, including Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak, Digg.com founder Kevin Rose, and New York Times tech columnist David Pogue. When the contest is over, three teams of veteran developers and designers will develop the winning ideas into full-blown OS X apps.

My Dream App has announced twelve finalists so far and the remaining twelve will be announced the rest of this week (three per day). The deadline for this guest judge competition is Sept. 16 at 12 noon (EDT). The first elimination round will begin on Sept. 18.

BOSTON, Massachusetts - My Dream App, an online competition in which contestants compete for the chance to have their ideas realized as a Macintosh shareware application, announced its first batch of finalists today.

After launching two weeks ago, My Dream App (http://mydreamapp.com) has drawn over 2,700 idea submissions and an overwhelming response from the Mac community. My Dream App aims to enable Mac users without programming experience to turn their dreams into killer apps.

Two dozen finalists will battle for the praise of over 40 high-profile guest judges, including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Digg founder Kevin Rose and Delicious Library developer Wil Shipley. Ultimately, software lovers all over the world will vote to decide which three finalists win the right to see their dream app realized. When the contest is over, three teams of veteran developers and designers will develop winning ideas into full-blown Mac apps.

The first finalist announced today was Herald, an app that presents RSS news feeds as sections in a virtual newspaper. Users would be able to create and share newspapers through an iWeb-like user interface. Bogumil Glertier, a college student from Poland, authored the idea for Herald.

Stick-It, the second finalist, is an app that allows users place sticky note reminders in apps, menus, on windows, and just about anywhere within OS X. Stick-It was submitted by Anders Melin, a 28-year-old Mac user from Sweden.

Announced third was Desktop Wars, a real-time strategy game which transforms a standard OS X desktop into a battlefield. The game would feature interaction by mouse, voice, and motion sensor. Desktop Wars was conceived by Andrew Wilson, a college student from Utah.

My Dream App is the brainchild of software entrepreneur Phill Ryu. More information on these finalists, along with comments from judges, can be viewed at http://mydreamapp.com.

Additional finalists will be announced every weekday through Sept. 15. The first elimination round will begin on Sept. 18.

Software Dreams Become Reality with My Dream App

BOSTON, Massachusetts - Software entrepreneur Phill Ryu announced “My Dream App” (http://mydreamapp.com) today, a new competition that invites participants to submit their best ideas for a killer app. Contestants will compete for a chance to have their idea realized as a Macintosh shareware application and earn royalties on software sales, as well as take home one of many MacBook and iPod prizes available.

Forty popular Mac developers, well-known bloggers, established members of the tech media, top-notch UI designers and even Apple alumni have signed on to My Dream App as guest judges to offer expert critique during the event. Judges include Digg.com founder Kevin Rose, New York Times columnist and best-selling author David Pogue, former Apple evangelist Guy Kawasaki and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.

“It’s always fun when someone innovates in the computer world. My Dream App is doing that by turning software design and development on its head. It’s going to be interesting to see how this all turns out,” Wozniak said.

Ryu believes that My Dream App will mark a revolution in software development. “My Dream App will do for software users what American Idol did for aspiring singers. All it takes to win is a really great idea, and you don’t even have to be a Mac user,” Ryu said. “We’re democratizing software.”

The initial entries will be narrowed down to two dozen finalists by the My Dream App development team. Visitors of the site will then vote to decide which app ideas stay in competition and which get eliminated until three winning ideas remain. Constant feedback from guest judges and users will enable finalists to improve upon their original idea. Each finalist will maintain a blog on the My Dream App website to document progress.

Experienced Macintosh developers Jason Harris of Unsanity (ShapeShifter), Austin Sarner (AppZapper) and Martin Ott (SubEthaEdit) will develop the three winning ideas into OS X shareware applications, and development will be managed by software vet and two-time Apple Design Award winner John Casasanta of Inventive (iClip).

The submission period is open from Aug. 21, 2006 through Sept. 1, 2006. After all submissions are reviewed, finalists will be announced. The first week of user voting will start on Sept. 21, 2006.
