MDC, though disillusioned and often times reluctant, does have a voice.

Today is BLOG ACTION DAY! Today, more than 11,000 bloggers unite to tackle one singular issue: Poverty. So, what can we do in our comfortable and snug lives? I believe it begins within, by what meter we measure our own quality of life by. Poverty is often times not the cliche and stereotypical images we see on TV, and it certainly is not limited to developing nations. Poverty is quietly swept away in the shadows of our society, often hidden away in our minds eye. Take a closer look. It begins with us, it begins with our acknowledgment that perhaps as a society we have been spoiled. We wade, neck deep in the thickness of our cultural materialism. I am reminded of Borjes' short, The Exactitude of Science and the powerful image which conveys the great division within our postmodern age. We go home to our social constructs of reality, we take action that touches little of the real problem and as the divide becomes ever greater, we disparage further the haves from the have-nots. Blog Action Day is great, but Real Action Day is better.

Now, don't go home and feel guilty about eating delicious foodings and relishing in comfort, but rather, go home and realize that we have already stepped into a different path by questioning our own lives, our unconscious apathy, and our ability to make change. It begins with this: adjust ourselves with a little more empathy, perhaps a touch less greed, and with some humble selflessness, we can unite ourselves as a community and show some true force, some true humanity.

Russell, a friend of mine, told me he needed a little help. His coworker just had a baby and she was diagnosed with lymphoma. To make a long story short, he is throwing a fundraising event for them. There will be raffles and live music, go to Presleypalooza.org for more info.
