SHOP IN BAN QIAO, TAIWAN

Ban Qiao has the 3rd highest population among all cities in Taiwan. It is the home of the National Taiwan University of Arts, and the National Banqiao High School, which is considered as the top high schools in New Taipei City. But we’re not here to talk about that, we’re here to talk about the life of the city at this era.

As I have mentioned in my previous blogs, the night is what keeps Taiwanese people alive. More shops are open, more food is being served, and more people wander around the streets. I actually prefer that practice because some things just looks so magical in the evening, the air is cooler, the colorful sparkly lights on the streets are more vivid, and everyone just seems so stress-free and excited to get off work.

You will eventually notice that most Taiwanese love cute, and cool stuff – well, they love to shop. They sell the tiniest item with the tiniest purpose you can think of, and if your fond of clothes, shoes, bags, make-ups and other things I've not said, well, Ban Qiao night market is one of the places to be.

There are tons of shops around the city, it will take you all night, or the night is not even enough.

It may seem scarce, but believe me, the shops go furthermore along this aisle.

There are high-end brands to local brands to choose from, fancy restaurants to street stalls to dine in. My suggestion is to visit Ban Qiao night market place twice, so you’ll be certain that you have not miss anything, unless you're a pro when it comes to shopping.

I don't mean to brag, but this was the city where we usually buy branded shoes, which is rare. Hahaha

And of course, always have fun!

MUST VISIT SHOPS IN TAIWAN

What is the #1 most favorite thing to do when you visit other countries? SHOPPING!!!! Need I say more? And I will be sharing some shops you’ll enjoy when you visit Taiwan. So, let’s get started.

1. IKEA
Located at 242, Zhongzheng Road, Xinzhuang District, New Taipei City, Taiwan

If your fond of buying, or just admiring furniture, home accessories, or DIY stuff, I recommend that you at least visit the place. You won’t regret it!

You can get some interior design ideas from their showrooms (living area, dining area, toilets and baths, bedrooms, kids rooms, and the likes).

My sister even lie on the bed, and no one seems to care at all. Hahaha

2. UNIQLO
Located at 52, Zhongzheng Road, Xinzhuang District, New Taipei City, Taiwan

It looks bigger in person than in picture.

This brand has fully captivated the heart of the many, that in Taiwan, their store could occupy almost an entire neighborhood (literally).

3. TAROKO SPORTS
Located at 621, Zhongzheng Road, Xinzhuang District, New Taipei City, Taiwan

This place is an arcade area where you get to be a kid a again.

4. TAIPEI

Taipei City is a vast place, but since it’s the tourist spot, shopping malls, and boutiques are just across the streets, or 2 blocks away.

5. LOCAL NIGHT MARKETS

Never miss an opportunity to have a night market extravaganza! More stores are open, more food, more people, and more interesting items for some photos.

You may notice that a lot of the stores are located at Xin Zhuang, well I guess we’re just fond of going to that place, and so should you!

GREAT PET SHOPS IN TAIWAN

Souvenirs or pasalubong have been a protocol to tourists whenever they’re visiting a new place, be it an international or domestic travel. It’s a way of remembering our loved ones waiting for us back home. Our pet babies are not an exception. They too should also receive some exotic gifts.

Taiwanese has a great love for pets, almost everyone has a pet baby of their own. For that reason, pet shops, pet parlors, and pet parks could be seen everywhere. They’re super adorable!

And whenever we visit Taiwan, it is customary to buy tons of canned goods, dry foods, and a few accessories for our cats.

We often visit a lot of pet shops to compare prices, and our usual go to is at Xin Zhuang, Taipei City.

These two pet shops are by-far the biggest I have seen. They have items for dogs, cats, rabbits, fishes, turtles, guinea pigs, and the likes. Plus, they have a spacious pet parlor inside.

OH, have I mentioned that these shops are neighbors? It's kind of an advantage for us to easily compare prices.

I’m sure that there are also great pet shops near where you're staying, and if you're planning to bring home some treats for your pet babies, make sure to allot extra baggage allowance on your return flight.

MUST EATS IN TAIWAN

Aahhh FOOOODDD!! What a better way to forget everything when that good tasting smell draws you near, that scrumptious meal snags your sight by surprise, and finally, when that saltiness, sweetness, spiciness or sourness of the meal bursts and fills every bit of your taste buds...

There are tons of great Chinese food in Taiwan, but if you’re looking for classy dishes at fancy restaurants, I would stop you right there, as this is not the page you’re looking for.

What I’m about to share are common foods, but are far better than those at lavish restaurants (I’ve tried and tested), so here are my most favorites:

1. BEEF NOODLE SOUP (Niú Ròu Miàn)

There are probably a lot of good beef noodle soups around Taipei, but this place is where we usually go. Half an hour bike ride from our place, Shu Lin, to Xin Chuang Min An Xi Lu, is worth every slurp of the good tasting soup, especially during winter.

They really put in big chunky beefs, and their soup is very tasteful.

We always have additional orders like this one -- pork steak sauted with ginger

2. SHABU SHABU (Huŏ Guō)

A mix of everything in one bowl; beef, egg, mushrooms, veggies, noodles, clams, shrimps and so much more. It may sound off, but I guarantee it’s something you’ll keep coming back for.

As you can see, people lined up for hours to have a seat at this restaurant; it's a first come first served basis.

The restaurant we often dined in is located near our place. It is always a blockbuster hit especially during weekends.

This is my very own hot pot. I get to customize its flavor according to my liking. They have a separate table where you mix different Chinese condiments to serve as your sauce, or additional flavoring to your soup.

Be sure to try a nearby Shabu-Shabu around your place.

3. BEEF/LAB STEAK (Niú Bā)

This is the sizzling beef steak with noodles.

And this is the sizzling lamb steak with noodles.

The best restaurant (for me and my folks) to have a sizzling plate is at Ban Qiao night market. We have tried from fancy places to common diners, but this restaurant serves one of best saucy sizzling beef, lamb and chicken that draws us back every time.

This is also jam-packed with people during Friday nights, and weekends.

A good place to bring your tummy!

4. DUCK (Yā)

Aside from chicken, you also have to try Taiwan’s duck cuisine for once. You’ll really spot the difference between the meats.

5. PORK AND CHIVE DUMPLINGS (Shuǐ Jiǎo)

It's really filled in with pork, and a few green onions.

This dish is often available for breakfast, diners everywhere have this on their menu early in the morning, I’m not sure why.

This is the egg roll with meat fillings as well.

My parents are fond of ordering this meal for breakfast, complemented by soy milk, and Tan Pin (egg roll), and not once have I seen someone eat this as a snack (or maybe it’s just my presumption). Hahaha

6. CHICKEN CUTTLINGS (Jī Pái)

I don’t have a favorite restaurant for Chi Pai because it’s a street food, we'll just go at a nearby market and order one. It’s one of the most favorite snacks in Taiwan, never miss to try it!

7. TEMPURA (Tiān Fù Luō)

Similar to Chi Pai, tempura is also a street food. This isn’t the famous Japanese tempura, rather it’s made from spiced seafood (shrimp, fish, octopus or scallop), and deep fried. Very crunchy!!

8. GRILLED SQUID (Kǎo Wū Zéi)

Yes, another famous street food in Taiwan. If you’re craving for it during the day, I’m afraid you won’t find any, as it is often cooked at night markets where people are busy shopping and eating their hearts away. Hahaha

Woo! Just by sharing these amazing foods made me reminisce how mouthwatering, and lip smackingly good they are. Oopss, I almost drooled on my laptop there! Hahaha

HOW IS COMMUTE IN TAIWAN?

Ever wondered how people commute in other country; how they go to work or to school? Well, as to no surprise, there’s no flying cars, or teleportation devices invented yet, so there’s not much of a difference as to mode of transportation in other part of the world, but how they manage traffic differs.

Should you find yourself exploring Taiwan, have no problem understanding and speaking Chinese, and you opt to see places by yourself, here are means of transportation that could help you.

1. BUSES

This bus stop is at Taipei City. Each bus number has list of cities it will pass through.

Taiwan buses have numbers affixed in front of their windshield. It is an indicator of the routes it’ll take, and arrival time at bus stops. It’s a bit confusing at first, but if you’re unsure of the directions, it’s better to ask the locals for help. Buses also don’t let people aboard and alight anywhere they want, they have specific bus terminals for it.

So, here is my sister feigning to know where we're heading. Hahaha

It doesn’t have a conductor coming to you and asking for your fare, it’s either you pay before boarding or before alighting, depending on the instructions written on bus. It has an automated small drop box machine located beside the driver where you pay. Be ready with your change. Minimum fare is 15NT.

Usually during peak hours, just like any other, buses are packed with passengers.

You have to push that red button to signal that you have to alight at the next bus station, otherwise the bus driver won't halt.

There are frequent commuters who uses an Easy Card (stored value card) where they can just tap it on the machine.

2. TRAINS

This is Taipei City's train station, the biggest station by far I've seen in Taiwan.

Taiwan trains are extensive, which channels out to cities, towns and provinces. Terminal range varies per area, but some are similar to airports that has numerous boarding gates. So be careful on which gate you board.

These pictures are Taipei Train station, the main station leading to provinces, cities, and towns. One of the reasons why this train station is huge is because it already comprises 3 different kinds of trains; Local Trains, MRT, and High Speed Rail (faster than MRT).

For places just around the city, you may opt to use the fare vending machine to avoid waiting in line for the cashier.

If you're waiting for your boarding time, you may hang around here and take pictures.

3. TAXIS

Taxis are also available if you’re in a hurry, and you want a comfortable private space. But it’s quite expensive with a flag down rate of 70NT with incremental rate of 5NT.

4. MOTORS

Motorbikes are also very common in Taiwan, more so than cars. Why? Because it’s cheaper, and could take you to places faster. If you’re worried about accidents, well, stay at home then, hahaha just kidding. For crowded places, there are specially made lanes for motors. But whether you’re driving a car, a motor, and others still observe caution, it’s the only way to keep you from accidents.

5. BIKES

These rent-a-bikes are called Ubike.

If items 1-4 aren’t enough for you, then buckle up as this generation, renting bicycles are widely used. There are countless metered-bicycles stationed around the city. It was developed to encourage wider use of energy-efficiency, zero-carbon vehicles.

Just simply register your Easy Card, and local mobile number in a nearby kiosk for verification, no deposit required. Once done, choose an available bicycle, swipe your card on the terminal, and slide the bike out.

UBike is priced at 10NT per 30 minutes of usage. You can return the bike in any UBike station, provided a space available. Just slide the bike into the terminal (an indicator LED flashes blue), then swipe your Easycard. The screen will display the fare and deduct from the value stored on your card.

**By the way, the Easy card (also known as Yoyo card) can be purchased at any convenience store (7/11, Hi-Life, Family Mart, or etc.) and can be used to pay fares on buses, train stations, and UBikes.

BIKE RIDE IN XIN ZHUANG, TAIPEI CITY

One of the many things I look forward to visiting Taiwan are bike rides around the city. The fact that commute is not as accessible as it is in the Philippines, riding bikes eliminate walking a distance from one place to the another. Well to cut the story short, NO WALKING!!! Hahaha

The morning of New Year’s Eve 2016, while everyone began preparing for the celebration, my parents decided to have a bike-bonding first before we start ours. They also saw this as an opportunity to keep me and my sister on our feet and burn some carbs. Hahaha!

In order to steer clear of traffic, we took farther routes. However, we witnessed remarkable behind the scene views of the city.

A wide football/soccer field…

A vast space allotted for enthusiasts who fly radio-controlled aircraft…

We had an hour and a half ride from our place, Shu Lin, to reach the Xin Zhuang Bridge. It was mainly built for recreational purposes. There were runners, cyclist, or people who just wanted to stroll with their pets.

If you're not a morning person, no worries. Some say the night scene is as beautiful because of the lights tracing the form of the bridge.

So by any chance you visit Taiwan, borrow a bike, or rent one to get to experience a spectacular moment just within the city.

WHERE TO STAY IN A-Li-Shan TAIWAN?

My parents' picture look so good that I had to use this for the cover photo. Hahaha

Alishan Forest Park is one of the tourist spots of Taiwan located at Chiayi county. It takes a long ride to get to the destination, then continued on sightseeing and hiking. Now, who wouldn’t want to kick off their shoes and jump on the bed for some relaxation?

There are a few hotels inside the Alishan Forest Park, and some at a distance away, but you have to book a room early on because it gets a little crowded during the holidays and weekends.

My mom and I booked a hotel at Agoda, and decided to choose the one that was just across Chiayi TRA (train railway) station, in that way we’re closer to commute and to shopping areas. We stayed at Shin Kao Hotel.

This is their lobby. You don't have to climb the stairs by the way, there's an elevator behind the reception area.

This is the room we stayed at, two queen-sized bed, with cable TV and a hair dryer.
I couldn't kick my sister off the bed, so there, she's my bed model. Hahaha

This is the bathroom, with hot and cold shower, and complete toiletries such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste and brush, and towels.

And there's an available closet with hangers, and an extra bedding.

It was not a grand 5-star hotel, but the price was very reasonable, the staff were friendly, and by far we had a very pleasant stay.

Ps. Don’t miss out Chiayi’s night of fun. Have a night stroll around the town; shopping areas, restaurants and parks are close by.

TRAVEL TO A-Li-Shan TAIWAN

What does A-Li-Shan mean? “Shan” is the Chinese word for mountain, and “A-Li” is the name of the mountain. Alishan Forest Park covers 415km in area surrounded by mountains, villages, and waterfalls, and lies east of Chiayi, Taiwan.

It has become one of Taiwan’s major landmarks, and nearly everyone, be it the locals and the tourists alike will recommend visiting the place.

My parents are fluent Chinese speakers so we didn’t bother booking for a travel agency, we kind of did a backpacker-style of travel. Here’s how:

1. From Taipei, we rode a train going to Tounan, which took us about 3 ½ hours travel time.

Here we were at the train station.
Their terminal was so huge that there were actually group of students behind us practicing their dance performance, the use of space was free of charge.

I have mentioned that Alishan is located at Chiayi county, there are actually direct train trips to Chiayi however, there were no more seats left by the time we bought our tickets.

So, make sure you bought yours days before your scheduled tour as those tickets run out quickly especially on weekends and holidays.

2. From Tounan, we rode another train heading to Chiayi TRA (train railway) station, which then took us around 30 minutes.

Tounan station wasn't quite as big as Taipei's, but they do have this creepy-neat subway station.

If you have bought direct tickets to Chiayi, it can cut an hour off your travel time.

3. From Chiayi to Alishan, there are scheduled train trips we were not aware of, so my family and I took the bus instead. The bus station is just beside Chiayi TRA station.

And last but not the least, this is what the internal organ of the bus looks like. Hahaha

The earliest bus trip was at 06:10am, and the latest at 02:10pm. Bus ticket price for adults was 230NT, and children 115NT.

We were able to catch the trip at 9:10am, and the travel time was around 2 ½ hours. I strongly suggest you take the morning hike because it gets too misty in the afternoon to a point where the views are barely visible.

From the left, you will find the bus trip schedules and fares. On the top right, is the super speed train schedule, and at its bottom is the local train schedule, which I can't interpret. Hahaha sorry about that.

This is the entrance to the forest park, and it has an entrance fee by the way.

After the tour and you’ll be heading back to Chiayi, return tickets are bought at 7 11 (you’ll see it when you get there). The return fare and schedule are the same as with that of the outbound trip from Chiayi.

EXPLORE A-Li-Shan NATIONAL SCENIC AREA, TAIWAN – PART 2

A-Li-Shan National Scenic Area is one example of Taiwan’s natural preservation. The vast park covers nothing but trees, lakes, and rocks. It’s like they’ve created a whole new sanctuary dedicated for small-green people we see on movies.

A preview on how amazing the place was.

Thinking, what’s a small country like Taiwan have to attract tourists to their town? All I can say is that their government really makes an effort and puts in a lot of money to truly preserve and maintain the beauty of their environment. Never underestimate the size of country to what it can present.

This means Merry Christmas in Chinese.

Also, one of the best part while trekking was the inviting freshness of the air; smoke-free, vehicles-free, and noise-free. Plus, the mist felt like you’re already on the top of the mountain.

It was astounding! The trek would never make your feet sore because of the amazing 360 degrees view, plus the cool breezy weather complemented the wonderful experience.

Last but not the least, the huge temple at the end of the map. There are buses parked nearby for easy departure, or you can walk your way out, whichever you prefer.

Of course, you should never forget to buy a few souvenirs.

Tips:
1. I suggest taking a morning tour as it gets misty in the afternoon where the views are barely visible. It will kind of spoil your sightseeing and picture taking.
2. There will be a lot of walking so wear comfortable shoes and clothes.
3. Bring a jacket and some water, there are no available food stalls inside the forest park, not until you reach the temple.

EXPLORE A-Li-Shan NATIONAL SCENIC AREA, TAIWAN – PART 1

The Alishan National Scenic Area is a natural preservation mountain resort located in Chiayi, Taiwan. It is one of most visited tourist spots of the country. Though it is far from Taipei, it really lets you get back to nature. After all, that was the main purpose of our travel.

Since the park covered an enormous ground, you may explore it in 3 ways:

1. BY BUS --

This is the map to the forest, and that's it, I can't explain no further. Hahaha

Since we didn’t know which way to go, we had to take the park bus. The driver dropped us off in the middle of the forest, well not per se, hahaha! He said we can walk from there and enjoy the views.

This is the park's shuttle bus. They will drive off even if there's only 2 or 4 passengers.

There are other tourists you can follow if you’re concern on getting lost. Though, make sure you have the same destination.

2. BY TRAIN --

This is the entrance to the train station. Those are tourists from other countries taking pictures.

This is far by the most expensive means of exploration. Though, it has more stations to choose from. Some suggested on visiting Fenchihu.

3. BY FOOT --

Although there were easy means of exploring, most tourists preferred walking, enjoying the cool breeze, and taking a looot of pictures.

You will be given a map before you enter the park, so it can help you get to your desired destination. The only setback here is if you get lost. You need to speak in Chinese to converse with other people otherwise you’ll have a hard time finding your out way.

What I recommend is to take a bus to get you inside the park, then walk your way out, it’s much easier and fun that way. Besides, it’ll be too tiring if you walk your way in and out of the park, you won’t get to enjoy much of the views because your too tired.

With numerous perfumes sold in the market, it is hard to choose which ones will best suit your style/mood. If you could only contain each and every scent in your cute little nose, that will make things easier. So I will be sharing two of my most favorite perfumes that fit accordingly with my moods.

I only wear perfumes on special occasions and moments when I feel I wanted to. The reason is that I wanted to maintain the uniqueness of the scent every time I wear them.

These fragrances were actually gifts given to me by my boyfriend and his sister. They nailed it on choosing these scents because I love them.

I'm not a scent critic but I'll try sniff them out the best I can so I would be able to describe better.

DKNY - DONNA KARAN NEW YORK (Red Apple)

Scent:

The fragrance is light, fresh, and juicy. It is perfect for summer season as it leaves you smelling fresh and vibrant. It also has that tomboy vibe which projects being cool, relaxed and "astig".

Occasions to Wear:

I love wearing this scent during casual dates, dinner parties with friends, and/or out for a stroll in the mall.

VOILE DORE

Scent:

It has a light and sweet flower-like fragrance with a hint of romantic sentiments. So if you are feeling kind of sexy, flirty, and mysterious, this scent will definitely match your mood.

Occasions to Wear:

I love to wear this scent on romantic dinners and getaways. This scent is also perfect for weddings, cocktail parties, and formal occasions as it also projects class and sophistication.

With just a spritz, you could easily appreciate the lightness of the fragrance, and the scent could last for about 24 hours.

Place of Purchase:

6 REASONS WHY I QUIT MY JOB

"Why would anyone quit a good paying job?" This has always been a question by many when someone leave their jobs for something less of monetary value. But then you will never fully comprehend such decision until you find yourself in that situation.

"You will eventually love your job since it pays well." HUH! Wishing it was that easy. "But the world is difficult, you have to work hard for a living." Not the first time you've heard that huh? So, Am I crazy for quitting? Maybe I am, maybe I am not. Well, here are my reasons:

1. CONSTANT ANXIETY & DEPRESSION

It is a fact that most men are dreading the first day of work, but what I felt was different. At first I thought everyone feels the same way I do, however there came a point where I would wake up every morning being miserable, depressed and tired.

It wasn't just about being lazy, it's that as each day passed I became more unhappy, dispirited, and uninspired. Crying before going to work, and after work because I have to do it all over again. And as I fast forward a view of what my life would look like, I didn't like the picture of seeing myself staying/feeling this way over and over again.

People advised me to take a break, and I did. I traveled, I splurged, I went to parties, I sought spiritual help but to no success. It was the worst feeling I ever felt, and it still haunts me 'til this day.

2. ABSENCE OF PURPOSE

I couldn't see the point of what I was doing. I lose the motivation to work. The glow I had; cheerfulness, enthusiasm and positivism slowly faded, and I became apathetic. Yes, I had finished one task and another however, I wasn't -- fulfilled. I somehow got lost on the process where I could no longer see my value and my strengths.

I tried to trick myself on believing on some made-up purpose, but to no success. I guess I was smarter than that.

3. EXHAUSTION FROM REPETITIVE ATTEMPTS

I am not the type of giving up easily. I put my ass to work for more than 2 years. I opened myself to criticisms, to being reprimanded, and to changes to be able to adapt the values that my work required. More than that, to prove that I was willing to become better, I enrolled a short course that my superiors remarked as my 'need for improvement' area.

I gave my best, best and best shot. I have given it countless of chances to redeem myself back and to make my 'work' work, but to no success.

4. PHASE OF SELF-DEPRECATING

As the headline goes, "Girl with Scholastic Honor Disappoints Everyone", I think this was known in the entire office (hahahaha). Kidding aside, I began looking down on myself, and belittling my value. Having a ratio of 4:1, 4 for my failures, and 1 for my accomplishment (for having a job). Maybe I was too hard on myself, but I made failing a hobby, lucky enough that they didn't fire me.

Though I still put on my fighting spirit. I researched and studied my work. I did self-help test online to change my perspective. I picked up some courage and consulted my superior for improvement advice, but still to no success.

5. LOSS DUE TO INFERIORITY

With so much pressure I placed on myself and so much effort I put on my work, still it wasn't even good enough. I felt very insecure and my morale had been trashed, stepped on, and burned.

I was consumed by the negativity that surrounded me; it had eaten me alive, and there's no escape from it. It was no longer a healthy environment.

6. UNFITTED OPPORTUNITY

Despite the emotional challenges, I still am very grateful for having a job. It made me stronger, wiser and more mature. I admit that all those adversities were my fault, there's no one to blame but me (I read that from a self-help book I bought).

I realized not all opportunities we choose will deliver the outcome we expected, it maybe for the best or the worst. The job I had could have been the best but it never worked out. No matter how much I've tried, my heart wasn't set out for it. Though it had played an important part of my life, it made me who I am now, and led me to where I should be.

(Apologies for dragging out negative vibes)

Yes, we all have to make hard decisions and it's a matter of knowing your priorities. No doubt, all of us wanted a good life, but someone asked me, what is my definition of a good life anyway?

I did what I had to do because I have to run my life through the course I wanted. I wouldn't want to regret the things I could have done when I still have the chance.

If there is something I've learned from the experience, there is no such thing as easy money, and there are no shortcuts in life. So whatever it is you want to achieve, you still have to go through challenges before reaching your goal.

It is a scary step, and the next chapter is even more challenging. But, I am optimistic with fingers crossed that the next job will actually be what I like and feel proud of.

Given this time I know what I am capable of; I never give up without putting my best shot, I push myself to my limits, and I go beyond what I expect from myself.

6 REASONS WHY I STAYED ON THE JOB I AM NOT HAPPY

As we continuously do the same thing everyday, we unconsciously build our comfort zone without realizing the value of important matter outside the tiny world we've created. Thus, finding ourselves stuck. Sadly, I am not an exception to such experience.

What made me say that?

Let us take a trip back to life after college. Graduating from a 4, 5 or more-year degree in college is the most rewarding feeling ever. There's no word to describe that significant event because finally it's the time to conquer the world; to be independent, to fully grasp the hope-for freedom and face-the-real-world-kind-of-thing.

The main setback however, which our system has yet to register, is LOOKING FOR A JOB. If you don't have any big time connections to companies that could get you hired quickly, you have to go to a bunch of job fairs, send out thousand of resumes on different job websites, and personally hand out CV's to companies around the city (it's kind of an old school, but desperate times call for desperate measures). And so the wait begins...

So technically, getting a job is a big relief regardless if it is the job you wanted, but the true satisfaction is being freed from the anxiety and anticipation whether or not you will get the job or face another ice cold rejection.

With that said, I made my list of excuses why I stayed on the job I know I'm not happy anymore.

1. I HAVE A JOB

As simple as that. "Don't be picky, it's difficult to look for work these days", as they say; which is true. There are thousands of people looking for any kind of work so long as they have a job, with that mindset I grabbed my first job offer without even thinking if that's what I wanted. We've all been there, excited on our first day at work. But I realized later on that I wasn't happy doing what I do, I found myself trapped with my fears to leave in exchange for something uncertain.

"Maybe it's a natural thing, not all people love what they do.", I said to myself.

2. COMPENSATION WISE

It is everyone's priority as to why they are working. "It's all about the Benjamins" baby. Hence, to be an employee in the corporate world has its perks. Aside from the monthly pay, there's company insurance, health card, yearly allowance, and BONUSES! How can you resist something like that CHAA-CHING!!! (blinded by money)

3. SHOPPING SPREES & TRAVEL DELIGHTS

With cash on hand, I can shop whenever and whatever I want, I can eat all the time, and I can travel whenever I want. I just have to sacrifice and save a few months of salary, and the next thing you know, I'm in Bora (Boracay) sipping Margarita. You also get vacation, and sick leaves with pay.

4. EGO & PRIDE

Just by having a job is already considered a bragging right, but in my case it's much more than that. Not to brag but I graduated with good scholastic record so I am offered an assistant managerial rank with a good position. How cool is that huh?! So during family reunions, and friends gatherings, I am highly regarded and praised, and to be honest I love the attention and respect given to me, despite knowing that deep within i'm fooling myself to feeling good.

5. BROAD CONNECTIONS

I get to know and meet important people in the company. I get to work with the top management on different projects and develop a professional relationship with them. And let's all be honest here, you get that sense of pride when the big bosses acknowledge and recognize you. It somehow makes you feel that your're also as important as them.

6. PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

This actually is a given to anyone working on something new, whether your personal growth leads to a positive or a negative effect. I have grown in both good and bad ways -- personally, socially, emotionally, psychologically and professionally.

All that I have mentioned are essentials, and all are the very reasons why it is difficult to just leave. We may even share the same reasons however, more often than not, it all really boils down to MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! which isn't bad; realistically speaking (as I reiterated to myself then).

But at that moment, I have no obligations and big responsibilities yet, so I asked myself to what really matters most -- the "Money & Luxury", which I am enjoying, or the "Passion & Happiness", which I still need to find. This is really a tough decision to make.

Lucky, if you're already paid to practice your passion, but as for the rest, what choice would you choose?

There's no judgement because there's no right or wrong answers. The justifications we give for our choices differ based on the priorities we set for ourselves.

As for my decision, I am pretty sure you've already guessed what option I picked between the two. I'm still scared but better face the challenges now than have regrets later.

I do hope you make the right decision for yourself.

CHRISTMAS GIFTS IDEAS

It is that time of year again where twinkly lights filled the streets, jolly Christmas songs echo wherever you go, a sweater-weather day, and the season of gift giving. Have you thought about what to give for your special someone yet? Well, sit back, read and enjoy some of these few gift ideas.

It is certainly difficult to think of unique presents to give to your special someone. This does not mean you love them less, rather you wanted it to be special that you won’t settle for mediocre. There are only a few weeks left before Christmas, and it’s normal to run out of ideas. Don’t panic, I got just a few out of the shelves you can choose from.

1. QUICK GETAWAY

This may be a cliché, but it won’t hurt to surprise him/her with a 2-3-day trip away from the city. Take him/her to some of the romantic places where you can just drive up or commute like Baguio, Tagaytay, Batangas, Laguna, Subic and the likes.

It may be cold for swimming, but those places sure have that cuddle-snuggle-weather where you can be intimate and just enjoy the moment that you two have.

Though I suggest you reserve a room as early as today. Hotels out-of-town are quickly booked during the holidays.

2. RESERVED ROMANTIC DINNER

You can make a reservation at a classy restaurant where you can dress up, and have a fancy dinner. You don’t need to worry about commute, you can book an Uber or Grab Car on you mobile.

Better make an early reservation, Christmas day is like a concert hall packed with people wherever you go, except that they don’t jumped around, scream and get wild.

3. 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

From the song’s lyrics itself, you can start giving your gift on December 14. You can start of from something small until the main event.

If finance is your major concern, establish your budget first, how much are you willing to spend? Once that’s settled, decide on your gift’s concept...

Say he/she loves to write, you can start of by giving a small item, a blue pen, then black pen, next a red pen, (complete the color if you want), after a sticky note, until the major item that you think he/she will definitely love, like a Starbucks planner, a drawing book, a calendar, and the likes.

Or, you can start of by sending him/her an ‘I love you’ message via text, viber or email, then a back massage, after a foot scrub (all the pampering stuff), and maybe for the finale, you cook something special; your mother’s secret recipe.

4. SWEET STUFF

There are also great material things that you can give like a watch, a sweater, headphones, shirts or anything that he/she loves.

Though it doesn’t have to be serious stuff, I remember giving my boyfriend a toy helicopter, he was so surprised. He loved it so much and just couldn’t stop playing it. There’s also a time when I gave him a WANGE LEGO where he had to build the Big Ben (it’s one of the places we wish to travel someday), at least I made him very busy. In case you’re wondering, I bought the Big Ben Lego at Toys R Us.

5. SEXY STUFF

There are nice, and definitely naughty items. You can also play around with naughty stuff. How about giving sexy lingerie, undergarments, sexy movies, and other sexy stuff. Be creative.

6. HANDY CRAFTS

You can make pieces of artworks like drawings, paintings or a scrapbook where you store pictures of you together creating memories this 2016, it will be like a year book.

7. SERANADING WITH A TWIST

How simple it may seem, but being serenaded, whether you’re a man or a woman, will make you feel special and oh so loved. So, on the big day, why not sing one of his/her favorite songs, if you can play an instrument, then that’s even better, or do improvisation.

But don’t play it that safe; dress up for the holidays. Put on a costume; as Santa, an elf, or a reindeer. Make it fun and playful, add some choreography if you can. It maybe inexpensive, but I must say “A” for effort, he/she will fall in love with you all over again.

8. LONG DISTANCE LOVE

LDR is hard especially during holidays like this. So, to keep things special, why not have flowers deliver to her home, or a box of pizza to his. Make use of the internet to get the contact number of their local stores. You may need to spend a little for a long-distance call, but just imagine the smile on his/her face when those things are delivered at their place.

9. DIY ROMANTIC DINNER

Surprise him/her by turning your living space into a romantic spot. Decorate it with Christmas lights, some wreaths and garlands. Maybe light up some candles and cover the light bulbs with some colored cellophane. Cook or order some food, and have a sweet and romantic music play on the background so you can slow dance to the music.

10. THOUGHTFUL NOTES

On the 24th of December, the moment he/she wakes up, place sweet and thoughtful handwritten sticky notes and set them to different areas where he/she can easily see them, then leave a piece of sweet (like a lollipop or a candy) beside every note.

Just before Noche Buena, read to him/her your last handwritten letter, then instead of leaving a piece of sweet, you will be sharing the sweetest and most memorable kiss.

These gift ideas are applicable to both genders, and I hope it can help you decide what to give. You can tweak and add your own personal touches, or you can mix them up. Really, everything is at the tip of your imagination, just be creative, and have fun.

Keep in mind though, no matter what gift you’ll decide to give, the best feeling is making that special someone smile, and be happy!

BALER ADVENTURE: THE SURFING GAME

Aahh! Baler, Aurora, the “SURFING CAPITAL OF THE PHILIPPINES”. The sweet escape of every surf lover of the country.

It is said that the peak season for surfing in Baler is during the ‘ber’ months where the best waves are brought in by strong winds from the North. I, for one would say that Sabang Beach is not really ideal for swimming because the waves are just going to shove you back to the shore.

As soon as you stepped on the beach, there are plenty of surf instructors offering their services, or if you already know how, there are surf boat rentals.

We were instructed by a group of young surfers; Gandang Alon, as they called themselves. The surfing lesson took 1 hour for PHP 300. Since it was just me and my boyfriend, we each had a 30-minute session.

They will teach you the basics for about 5-10 minutes, depending on how quick you can catch up, and then your off with the waves. Don’t worry, they won’t let you be alone at sea, they’ll still guide you. By the way, our surfing instructor was Carl, and this was the step by step basic guide in surfing.

They'll teach you how you're suppose to lie on a surf board.

Then, how you can stand up along with the waves.

The next thing you would do when you got up.

When you finish the basic training, you're off to the beach and get some actions.

There maybe some bumps and challenges, but you'll definitely conquer the water.

It was super fun. If you still want to surf after the lesson, you may rent their surf board for PHP 500 good for the whole day.

BALER ADVENTURE: TREK DITUMABO MOTHER FALLS

One of the iconic highlights of visiting Baler, Auroa is an uphill trek to Ditumabo Falls, or known as the Mother Falls. Some say that you’re visit in Baler will not be complete without trekking up to this Falls. So, stick around to find out more juicy bits of the course.

Kuya Andy (our tricycle driver/tour guide) made sure that the falls is the last stop of our tour.

The hike had an approximate 30-45-minute trek, so better do some stretching and warm-up because it was not easy. Do wear appropriate trekking shoes because the trails were rough, rocky and slippery, and it also involved river crossing.

An entrance fee of PHP 30 per person is required. Here’s the trail to the Falls.

It may seem an easy path, but it's very steep.

Which path would you chose, if both will lead you to the same destination?

Be careful and watch your head.

At last!! We've reached the falls!

Seeing the MOTHER FALLS after the exhausting hike was very rewarding. It was UNBELIEVABLE, MESMERIZING, SO POWERFUL, and SO GRAND. It towers around 140 feet, with cold water free flowing into a wide rocky basin that forms a natural swimming pool.

Look at that happy kid, enjoying herself in the cold water after a hot long trek.

Kuya Andy told us that Falls also serve as a hydraulic power in producing electricity for the entire town. That’s how POWERFUL it is, making me admire it even more.

BALER ADVENTURE: VISIT DOÑA AURORA'S HOUSE & MUSEO DE BALER

Ancestral houses and museums are just a few of our means of preserving historical artifacts and mementos that serve as strong proofs of how rich our culture is. Baler, Aurora, for one has sustained its priceless possessions for over many long years.

Everyone who has visited Baler would definitely not overlooked the ancestral house of Aurora Aragon Quezon, wife of Manuel Luis Quezon, the president of the Commonwealth of the Philippine.

Aside from being a close distance from other historical landmarks, the place is one of the tourist spots worth the visit. So, let’s have a look around…

DOÑA AURORA'S HOUSE

Before you can roam around the house, you will be asked to pay a PHP 30 fee per person. Don’t lose the receipt as that serves as your entrance voucher for the museum, which is just a few blocks away.

The Quezon ancestral house was a simple and typical bahay-kubo, with wooden stairs leading up to the living room, huge opened windows where neighbors could see what you’re doing or in movies where men do harana, and different rooms with different functions.

You can tell that the house had gone through a lot of changes and restorations over the years, but they still managed to maintain its original designs.

Since it was a small vicinity, we’ve only spend a few minutes admiring the portraits, paintings and overall design of the house. We then headed on to…

MUSEO DE BALER

Do present the receipt you had from the payment you made in DOÑA AURORA'S HOUSE. The staff in the museum do not accept payments, so they will have to asked you to go back to the house instead.

These were some of fascinating artworks displayed in the museum.

If you remember the Baler Movie of Anne Curtis and Jericho Rosales, one of the MMFF entries of 2008, aside from shooting the movie in Baler, it had also brought home tons of awards. The trophies and other memorabilia were proudly exhibited in the museum.

We did enjoy seeing these remarkable pieces, and I hope you will too.

BALER ADVENTURE: DESTINATION WANDERS

Whenever we hear Baler, Aurora, the first thing that comes to mind is surfing, yes this is a fact, but the place has much more to offer other than that. It has wonderful hidden beauties of mother nature waiting to be marveled.

For a 2D/1N stay in Baler, my boyfriend and I didn’t waste time when we arrived at the place. We hired Kuya Andy (our tricycle driver/tour guide) for a whole day tour at a PHP 700 rate.

After we had breakfast, our exploration began…

HANGING BRIDGE

This tourist spot is a man-made bridge to help Baler folks cross from one side of the river to the other. There was actually nothing special when you reach the other side.

This is the view when you're on the bridge.

What’s special was the picturesque view of the river meeting the sea. Likewise, the thrill of crossing the bridge while it moved with your every step, and get this, it didn’t have a straight aligned path, rather at the middle of the course the steps are tilted downward.

By the way, there’s no entrance fee for this.

ERMITA HILL

But to count it off, they were 8 people, including the baby.

Kuya Andy, our driver/tour guide told us a short history about this hill. Back in 1735, during Spanish colonization, a massive tsunami had struck Baler. The phenomena had wiped out the whole town, killing thousands of people however, only a family of 7 people survived because they climbed on what is now known as Ermita Hill.

A monument of each family members was built as a reminder of that epic miraculous turn of events.

This was the picturesque view up the hill. Amazing huh?

Also, there’s no entrance fee for this.

DIGUISIT FALLS

A small falls that can be seen from the road. It was just a short uphill trekking for picture taking and appreciation of mother nature. The stones are bit slippery so be careful when you climb it.

This falls was just a warm-up for what’s coming ahead, which was the Mother (Ditumabo) Falls (a separate blog entry is published for this journey).

ANIAO ISLETS

One of the rock formations found in Baler. This is very much an Instagram worthy photo.

The view was spectacular, the rock formations were amazing though, it wasn’t a good place for swimming because of the scattered rocks.

Also, there’s a resort nearby; AMCO Beach Resort, which has their own pool that was only about 4-5ft deep.

An entrance fee of PHP 30 per person is required.

BALETE TREE

This is not your ordinary tree. This Millennium tree has lived for more than 600 years, and known as the “Oldest Tree in Asia”.

This tree is HUGE and it can be pretty scary during the night.

You can walk through the inside part of tree by crossing the interlaced branches.

This is what it looks like in the inside of the tree.

Be careful not to hit your head. Also, if you’re into tree climbing, they allow you to do so but only up to 3 meters from ground.

An entrance fee of PHP 10 per person is required.

BALER ADVENTURE: TO SLEEP AND TO EAT

We travel not only to explore, but also to relax and escape from the commotions of reality. Thus, one simple solution is to head up to the infamous BALER, AURORA.

After hours of travelling to Baler, or surfing at the beach, or even touring around town, wouldn’t it be much better that later on you get to lay in a comfy bed, and/or have a wonderful meal without stressing yourself on where to stay and where to eat?

Well, I am going to share with you where we lodged and dined for a 2D/1N stay in Baler at an average/reasonable price.

WHERE WE STAYED

CASA DE VIAJEROS

I found this place in the internet, then chatted with them on Facebook. They are very accommodating, and replies fast. When we finally decided to book a room, we just shoot them a message on FB for reservation, and deposited 50% of the lodge price to a BDO account number they provided. You may find them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/balercasaviajeros/.

They allow re-booking of reservation with no fee for 90 days starting from the date of your actual reservation.

The accommodation was more like a lodge than a hotel. It was very spacious though, no second floor and no reception area. We had to look around and asked for our rooms. It was not a beachfront but a few minutes away from the bus terminal, and a more or less 10-minute walk to Sabang beach.

This is their parking space, it's quite huge really.

We were roomed at CASA 1 with 2 beds and Toilet and Bath.

They showed us two kinds of room (with A/C). One room has a queen and a twin sized bed with a T&B included for PHP 1,300/night, and another room which also has a queen and a twin sized bed without T&B included for PHP 1,000/night. Prices aren’t that bad huh? We chose the room with a T&B included.

This was the queen sized bed. It was a bit dusty though.

This was their twin sized bed. My boyfriend just dumped all our things on bed as soon as we checked-in. MAN!

We checked-in around 4PM so we can rest after the long day tour, unfortunately fifteen minutes after, the electric current kept on fluctuating until the wire connected to the main power source blew up and the entire place went out of power. Well, we thought it was due to electric overloading. Luckily, it was a cozy day that we didn’t mind at all. The manager immediately acted on the situation, but it still took more than 3 hours to be fixed. Nobody wanted it to happen, and I do hope it really won’t happen again, especially during summer days.

If you're feeling a bit romantic or just wanna hang out, this was a very cool spot for that.

Take note: They do not have complimentary, so better bring your own toiletries such as towels, soaps, shampoos, lotions, tissues, toothbrush, toothpaste, and the likes.

WHERE WE DINED

RAM’S TAPSILOG

This was the first restaurant we dined in when we arrived in Baler. Kuya Andy (our tricycle driver/tour guide) brought us here for breakfast.

It was only 7:30 AM when we got there but tourists have already come and go leaving most dishes from the menu sold-out. It is true what they say, “Early bird catches the worms”. Good thing though, Tapsilog was still available. I love their Tapa. It was chunky, and very tasteful.

Total cost of breakfast for two (2) was at PHP 140.

YOLLY’S IHAW-IHAW & SEAFOOD RESTO

I have read good reviews on this restaurant, so we thought of trying it out for lunch. It was actually a carinderia. They offered variety of lutong bahay placed on a casserole and displayed on a long table, and they served free Bulalo soup.

We wanted something grilled, so we ordered 4pcs of barbecue, 3 cups of rice and some drinks. We were expecting that they still have to grill the meat so it’s still hot and juicy when served. Then again, it was already cooked and was a bit cold.

The barbecues were big but were a bit dry, and lacks flavor however, their special vinegar made them tasteful, “the vinegar saved the meal!”.

I am pretty sure that their other dishes are much better when you tried them out.

Total cost of lunch for two (2) was at PHP 280, (PHP 45/bbq stick, PHP 10/rice, and PHP 35/coke in can)

PADDLE OUT

After we took a nap at the lodge, it was time for dinner. We wanted to have dinner by beach, so we went out by foot and look for restaurants. We were so close at Sabang beach and yet so far that we were already starving, and the road only had a few street lights.

We are couples who love grilled foods, so we ordered Grilled Bangus and Grilled Tilapia (rice not included in the price). I was complaining earlier that the food at lunch was served cold and dry, but at this restaurant they cooked and grilled everything after you placed an order, which took up quite some time to be served.

But man, I loved it. I love the taste of the freshly cooked Bangus, and Tilapia, very flavorful. The ambiance of place was quite sophisticated also.

Well, good food comes with a price. Total cost of dinner for two (2) was at PHP 325, (PHP 120 – Grilled Tilapia, PHP 160 – Grilled Bangus, and PHP 15/rice)

BAY INN’S RESTAURANT

The next morning, we’ve finally reached Sabang beach, and had breakfast at this place. The layout of the place was cute, and colorful. I think they provide free buffet breakfast if you’re a guest at their resort.

Pegged #WokeUpLikeThis, literally. As soon as we woke up, changed to our swim wear and headed to the beach.

So, we ordered a double cheeseburger with fries, and Tocilog. I love their fries, but not so much with their burger. The patty lacked a bit juiciness and saltiness to it.

Total cost of breakfast for two (2) was at PHP 245, (PHP 105 – Tocilog, and PHP 140 – Double Cheeseburger with fries)

BALER ADVENTURE: BUDGET & ITINERARY

Aurora, Baler has emerged to become one of the most visited tourist destinations in the Philippines, not just by our local natives, but also foreign tourists. Known as the “SURFING CAPITAL” of the country, the province is packed by rookies and professional surfers all year round. So, if you are planning your next trip in this awesome place, stick around to find out more insights.

An OC traveler like me has to plan every detail to make sure that I am right on budget, able to visit top places, and can still enjoy each moment. Transportation, food, accommodation and places to see are always at the top of my worry-list to arrange, so the best travel tips and guides will always come from the travelers themselves.

My boyfriend and I planned to go to Baler last October, but then typhoon Karen hit the place and caused road destruction so we had to postponed it for another month (I was a bit upset because my plan was ruined). Due to our busy schedules, we had to shorten our trip from 3D/2N to 2D/1N.

Here are some things that could help you plan:

HOW WE GOT THERE

We live around Metro Manila and do not own a vehicle so, we travel by commute. This part is a bit tricky because you may think that there are tons of available buses, BUT there’s only one (1) bus company that has direct trip from Manila to Baler, and that is Genesis Bus Transport located along Cubao, EDSA.

I made a list of options you can choose from:

Option 1: Genesis Bus Transport

These are regular A/C buses of Genesis (regular means that the bus has stopovers along the way to wait for more passengers). TRAVEL TIME TAKES AROUND 6-7 HOURS AT A PHP 550 RATE.

Though they have their website, I highly discourage you to follow their trip schedules from there. If you want to catch the bus, EARLIEST TRIP IS AT 12AM, and they are giving out seat numbers. Their succeeding trips depend on the volume of passengers. If you missed it, you will be a chance passenger, which is a bit risky.

PS.: This was our initial plan, but when we arrived at the terminal, there were no seats left. The staff were unsure of the time of the next trip or if there’re still any. So, we made a decision to go for Option 2. Please be guided on this because I don’t want you making the same mistakes we did.

Option 2: Joy Bus Genesis Transport

These are special A/C Genesis buses (special means that the bus has no stopovers and accommodates only a few passengers).

You have to make a seat reservation online or you may contact them. This gives guaranteed seating and schedule. Joy Bus can be SEMI-DELUXE (48-SEATERS) FOR PHP 650 or DELUXE (28-SEATERS WITH TOILET) FOR PHP 730. You may rebook your reservation with a fee of PHP 65. TRAVEL TIME TAKES AROUND 5-6 HOURS.

Earliest trip is at 12AM until 4:30AM. They provide blankets (which I think are made of cheap wool that the fluffs stick to your clothes), and snacks (Rebisco biscuits and small bottle of water).

P.S.: Lucky enough we were able to make a last-minute reservation when we got to the terminal. We departed at exactly 2:30AM and arrived in Baler at 7:30AM. It was a quick and comfy ride since we just slept along the way.

Option 3: Transfer Rides

From the name itself, you have to make two (2) rides; bus + bus, or bus + van to reach Baler. This is far the cheapest of all, and yet the most exhausting because aside from transferring rides, there are plenty of stopovers.

From Cubao, search for bus terminals going to Cabanatuan like ES Bus Transport or Five Star (and many more), then from Cabanatuan, hop on to Aurora Bus Line or a van going to Baler. Here’s a breakdown: (I am not sure how much the van cost)

Take note: If you’re heading back from Baler to Manila; Option 1, their last trip is at 9:30AM. Option 2 at 4:30PM and Option 3 – Aurora Bus Line, I think is around 6:30PM. Don’t worry, they have a small sign board in Baler Terminal, so better have a look at it.

ROAM AROUND BALER

When we arrived in Baler, there were tons of tricycle drivers hovering around the alighting sleepy passengers, including us, offering their tour services. Don’t be scared, they are very friendly and they are accredited tour guides of Baler.

If you want to avail their tour services, don’t be fooled on their rates. Whole day tour is at PHP 700, and half day tour is at PHP 500. If I were you, I’ll take the whole day tour. There are a lot of places to see, and you can take your time capturing every moment. Your driver can also serve as your photographer.

Our driver was too kind to insists on carrying our backpacks, but my boyfriend suggested that he can help me out instead because I’ll be busy taking pictures. He’s name is Andy Aragon, you may contact him at (+63)9487665390, or +(63)9065777522.

However, since there’s no PUVs or taxis in Baler but tricycles and you want to go to Sabang beach, to your hotel, place to eat, the market and etc. fare is only PHP 10 per person, depending on the distance.

Hey there’s another treat, you may also explore Baler at your own pace by renting motorcycles and bikes at Pajaroja Lodging along Sabang Beach. Motorcycles cost PHP 600/day, and bicycles cost PHP 100/hr. You may inquire at their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pajarojalodging/

Here was our ACTUAL ITINERARY when we stayed in Baler. We had to squeeze in all activities in two (2) days due to our busy schedules, but still the experience was super fun. I guess if we have extended more days, we’ll never leave the place.

This is not just a sample budget, BUT THE ACTUAL COST WE SPENT. The total rate/person may seem a bit too much because there’s only two (2) of us. The more number of people you are in a group, the lesser the cost you will have to spend.

If you think this is too pricey, you can look for a much cheaper accommodation, and cut down cost on food. We ate a lot so that’s probably the reason. And yes, pasalubong should be included in the budget, you can scrap that out if you don’t intend to buy any.

BLUE LAGOON RESORT AT FLORIDABLANCA PAMPANGA

A quick dip in the pool, with some slides along the distant neighborhood of Floridablanca Pampanga could definitely take your stress away from the hectic and busy commotion in Manila.

Blue Lagoon Resort is far from Pampanga town proper and located remotely from the highway. There are a few to none PUJs and PUVs passing there, so I would suggest that you rent a service going to the place for convenience. It's also just a 2-hour drive from Manila.

This is the road going to Blue Lagoon. It's quite dusty so better put up your windshield.

This is the entrance to the resort.

Cottages for rent ranges from PHP 500 - PHP 1000. Since there were only 5 of us, we only rented the PHP 500 cottage.

This was the cottage we rented, I think it can accommodate up to 6-7 people.

These are bigger cottages that can accommodate up to 10-15 people, plus there's a karaoke beside it.

This can accommodate more than 15 people, and there's also a karaoke beside it.

There's also a sari-sari store inside the resort if you need to buy food, and shower necessities.

At the north-west part of the resort stands a huge pond. We threw in a few Fita crackers and Sky Flakes, and we were surprised with the huge and small fishes swimming around to take a munch. It was so cool. I'm not so sure if it's allowed to feed them though, hehehe but they seem quite hungry.

As I remember, there were 8 huge fish swimming about.

Jumping on to the fun part, the resort has a total of 5 pools, and each has their own slides.

If you're a slide-addict then this place is suitable for you. As you can see on the pictures above, the slides are somewhat sloped at about 60 degrees, so if you enjoy the feeling of falling, well this place will definitely make your time worth it.

Oh, and by the way, there are no closed-room showers where you can take a bath, only toilets. Though there are open-showers found around the resort, you can just go to the toilet to change in to something dry.

CLIMB MT. SAMAT IN PILAR BATAAN

The National Shrine of Mt. Samat, or in our native tongue "Dambana ng Kagitingan" is a historical shrine located in Pilar province of Bataan. It was commissioned by the late president Ferdinand Marcos to honor and remember the gallantry of Filipino and American soldiers who fought during the World War II.

The top of the mountain can be reached by a car or other wheeled vehicles, there are tricycles at the footsteps of the mountain worth Php 100 per person per trip. But if you're feeling a bit inclined with nature, you can trek it for 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Once you reached the top, there's a Php 50 entrance fee for the museum. I would strongly suggest that you bring your own snacks, as the food prices on the mountain are doubled.

There's an altar, though I'm not sure if they do conduct masses up here.

There's a stairways to reach the cross, or should I say "Stairways to Heaven". hehehe

Once you reached the top, the 4-sided base of the cross has some sculptured stones depicting Filipino heroes. There's an elevator where you can ride to reach the top of the cross, too bad the elevator was under construction when we visited.

There's also a nice garden where you can sit and have your snacks after a tiring climb.

Before ending your climb, you can visit the museum where they kept historical data.

Nothing beats a day spent at the beach especially when summer comes to its end.

Due to busy schedules, I was desperately not ending my summer without taking a plunge at the sea, so I immersed myself in to researching a good resort, which then led me to Halfmoon Beach Resort.

Why you may ask I chose this beach despite all others? There were things I considered before deciding, well, not THINGS per se, hahaha!!! I'm on a TIGHT BUDGET, so I need an affordable resort.

Luckily, I found good reviews about Halfmoon Beach Resort. The resort is formerly known as Kale Beach resort which is located in Olongapo City, It wasn't difficult to find because it's just along RH5 National Highway.

I stayed at my boyfriend's house in Bataan, so I cut off the budget on accommodation. His parents were also kind enough to let us drive their car to the resort, so I scratched off travel expenses as well, "Thank God!!" We just used Google Map to help us navigate our way.

If your commuting from metro manila, take victory liner buses going to Olongapo, drop off at Olongapo terminal, beside the terminals are blue jeepneys that will pass by the resort.

We got to the resort on a Tuesday morning at 8:00am. I would personally suggest that you go on weekdays, as resorts tend to double their prices during weekends. And don't worry, the resort also has accommodations if you want to stay in for a night or two.

The plan was to only have a day swim and rent a small table or just set up a picnic blanket by the beach, but the the receptionist bargained a very good deal. For the cost of Php500, it was inclusive of a Nipa hut with bed and electric fan, and our entrance fee. We analyzed the matter for a while, and it was really cheaper than separately paying for our entrance fees and renting a cottage, we also couldn't lay a picnic blanket by the beach because it was scorching hot.

Oh, by the way, they also asked us for a Php500 deposit for the nipa hut's key which was refundable upon check out so long as you return them the key.

We were escorted to our hut, and I must say, it wasn't what I had expected. It really was nice, cute and intimate.

So we left our things at the hut, and headed straight to the beach. OMG, the water was so clear that you can see tiny fishes swimming around with you. The sand, though it wasn't white was so smooth and fine that it looks like exfoliating beads on a facial wash. And since it was still early, the heat of the sun was not burning hot yet. Everything was as its perfect timing, and given that it's on a weekday, the resort wasn't too crowded.

I super enjoyed the beach, and I kept saying, "Oh my gosh, this is so beautiful, i'm going to come back here." We just kept swimming and floating around. My boyfriend even dig a hole in the sand and buried me there. Hahaha

Aside from the beauty of the sea, the resort staff was pretty nice too. I'm saying this base on a funny experience. My boyfriend and I decided to drive to the city and have lunch, so we head back to our hut to change and grab a few things but I couldn't find my wallet nor remember where I placed it. So we went back to the reception and asked if they've seen my wallet, the receptionist said that she hasn't seen it and suggest that we could look into the CCTV footage upon our check in (I guess she suggested that because she's seen how worried face looks like, hahaha). The owner/manager assisted me on watching the video, while my boyfriend went back to double check our hut (he turned the place upside down just to find it, ahaha). Before I even finished watching the video, he came back and said that my wallet has fallen off the edge of the bed. WHAT A RELIEF and quite embarrassing!! We did apologized and thanked the staff for all trouble, and they diplomatically understand.

Given at the resort's affordable price, the whole experience was AMAZING!!! It had exceeded my expectations!!

Another personal suggestion, enjoy the beach as early as 6-7am and finish until 1pm. Aside from the sun's scorching heat after 1pm, the people who swam early tend to leave their trash along the beach; plastic wrappers, bottles, and etc were floating around. They should enforce a resort's policy not to leave their trash behind, because it's pretty nasty when the waves takes it in.

OUR LADY OF MANAOAG AT DAGUPAN PANGASINAN

One of the most famous churches that Filipinos visit is the Our Lady of Manaoag Shrine in Dagupan Pangasinan. Devotees all over the country that visit the church believe that she makes miracles. Though there's nothing wrong having that belief, so carry on with your sincere prayers.

As we were about to head back to Manila from our Hundred Islands, Alaminos Pangasinan adventure, we decided to stop by at Our Lady of Manaoag Shrine to attend the Sunday mass. From Alaminos bus terminal, we rode a bus going to Dagupan, and it will drop you off at the Shrine.

When we got there, it was jam-packed, but luckily we got to find seats near the altar. The church was huge, and can really accommodate numerous people.

The church also has a small chapel at back for those people who wants to have a quiet time, and pray. If you also want to pray the rosary, you may.

At the back most end of the church also has a park, where family and friends can dine and let the little kids wander off to play.

After attending the mass, and a little sight seeing, there are buses bound for Manila parked just across the church, if you're unsure, be sure to ask around, there's a police station nearby, and there's a lot of security guards scattered in that place.

HUNDRED ISLANDS AT ALAMINAOS PANGASINAN

Hundred Islands is a national park in Alaminos, Pangasinan. This is one of the listed tourist attractions taught to us during elementary and high school days. Now that we're old enough to travel, it's better to actually see and experience the islands rather than remain a black and white image from the textbooks.

Islands in Hundred Islands aren't really 100 by count, they total to 124 islands during low tide, and 123 islands during high tide. Be warned though, island hopping requires a lot of hiking, and swimming so ready your bimpos, umbrella, goggles, swimsuit, floaters, and most especially your sunblock.

How we got there

This adventure was actually a continuation from Explore Bolinao Island, From the bus terminal of Bolinao, we rode a bus going to Alaminos, Pangasinan. Travel time takes 1 1/2 hours. As soon as we landed in Alaminos, we rode a tricycle going to Lucap Wharf worth P80 for 4 people. It was already dark outside, and we're tired from the tour we had earlier at Bolinao, so we had dinner and rested in the resort.

Where did we stay

We booked a 2-night stay worth P2,000/night at Island Tropic Hotel. The room we got has 4 beds, spacious restroom, living room, and a dinning room.Though the wifi connection was unable to reach our room, you have to stay at their lobby so you can enjoy browsing the net.

At the front desk of the hotel, we already paid the Hundred Island entrance fee, P40/person. Boats also have uniform rate:

Small boat (1-5 pax) -- 1,400 day tour -- 2,500 overnight

Medium boat (6-10 pax) -- 1,800 day tour -- 3,000 overnight

Big Boat (11-15 pax) -- 2,000 day tour -- 3,800 overnight

The hotel, by the way was just in front of the Lucap Wharf where boats for island hopping are docked.

The Islands

1. Governor's Island

The first Island we visited was the Governor's Island, one of the main islands where there's electricity, facilities and water available. The Island is also famous for the Pinoy Big Brother House.

We then started climbing the stairs to reach the top of the Governor's Island for us to be able to see a panoramic view of the the islands/islets, and FYI there are 165 steps.

2. Virgin Island

There's this a connecting man-made bridge to reach Virgin Island. Ready yourself, this has a lot of hiking because boats are restricted to pass through the boundary.

3. Children's Island

It is called a Children's Island because of its shallow water. Regardless if it's a high tide, the water level is just waist-deep. Kids can actually have fun and play around in this island.

4. Lopez Island

This island is great for sunbathing. It has clear water and fine sand.

5. Quezon Island

This island is also one of the main islands. There are dining facilities, cottages and nipa huts where family and friends can sit back, relax and enjoy.

Also, near this island is where the helmet diving and snorkeling activities ensue. For the helmet diving, it cost P500 per person for 30 minutes.

6. Marcos Island

This island doesn't have picnic areas, it's more on brief sightseeing and swimming. However, in the middle of the islands is a cavern, where at its base is a deep 20-feet pool that opens up to the ocean. Daredevils can leap from a height of roughly 20 feet to the pool.

There are bats living here, so avoid screaming! hahaha

7. Cathedral Island

Cathedral Island doesn't have a shore, so our boat just passed by it. The island has a cathedral opening where a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary was placed.

8. Scout Island

This island is still underdeveloped, but there are some who prefers to set up their tents here. Good for swimming and sunbathing as well.

9. Romulo Island

This island is famous for the TV shooting of Marina, Claudine Baretto's mermaid show.

These are some of the few islands found in Hundred Islands. You can set up a tent there and enjoy the wilderness.

After a long day at sea, we headed back to the resort and rested. The following day, just before we headed back to Manila, we decided to drop by at Lady of Manaoag, Dagupan Pangasinan.
