A peaceful view of St Giles’ Church Imber, nestling in it’s little valley deep in the heart of Salisbury Plain, at this distance looking for all the world like an idyllic rural escape. It’s only when you get closer that you see the barbed wire surrounding the church and realise that the village buildings are just shells, and this is the Ghost Village of Salisbury Plain, where the villagers were asked to relocate at the height of World War II to provide a training area for the US troops preparing for D-Day, and told that they could move back six months later. That was 1943, sixty-seven years later the dwindling number of villagers are still waiting…

Driving to and from Calgary Airport when I first went there, it often seemed that the airport terminal had been built in a decidedly odd place. Essentially all of the passenger buildings are on the opposite side of the airfield from the city – why not build everything closer to the city?

Then you get into the terminal and realise why. This shot could really have done with a panoramic camera, however it was taken with what I had with me at the time. Airside at the airport the terminal has large glass windows looking out onto the tarmac and the view beyond. Whereas in London you don’t see much, here in this sunset view you can see the towers in the city centre silhouetted with the shape of the mountains behind – if you put the terminal on the other side of the airfield this view would be totally lost amongst the airport buildings…

This view was taken almost two years ago – but of course has subtly changed in the intervening time as a result of the conservation work at St James’. Amongst other things now you’ll find that the pews are a bit more regular, and the yellow carpet a somewhat less bold colour, but generally the view is much the same today.

The picture was taken late in the afternoon with good sun outside and no lights on in the building so I got a lovely effect with the light through the stained glass windows on the south side.

I like this picture, not because it’s a great picture, but just because of the slight ridiculousness of it! It was taken at the village fete a few years ago, and as you can see, as a result of the general confusion about where the car park was, everybody has just driven past the sign and parked close to the fete rather than in the car parking area.

This view will be familiar to anybody who has made the summer trip to the Taizé community in Burgandy. We’ve been several times, this picture being taken on our last visit last summer. This summer the community is marking 70 years since Brother Roger first came to the little village on the hill and started helping refugees of the ongoing war. Although he subsequently had to leave when he was found out he returned after the war was over and the Taizé community was born.
