Pareidolia is a fancy name to describe the phenomenon of folks ‘seeing’ faces in everyday commonplace objects.

While the images are most commonly religious in nature,e.g., Jesus and Mary, there are exceptions – the most recent case to gain publicity being that of a woman who has been keeping a McDonalds chicken nugget in her freezer for the past 3 years because . . . it bears a remarkable likeness to former US President George Washington. She is now hoping to sell this presidential nugget to raise funds for her church

While ‘pareidoliac’ may be the correct term to describe people who ‘see’ these images in everyday objects, several other rather unflattering ones spring to my mind !

In the dim and distant past when I went to school, my parents colluded with teachers to allow the buggers to beat me up. If I misbehaved in class or was rude to the teacher (Jeez, imagine getting all upset just because I told them to ‘fuck off’) I’d get hauled out in front of the class and given ’6 of the best’ with a leather strap (the tawse). When I returned home with bruised hands, wrists and forearms, the only comment my parents generally made was that . . .I must have done something to warrant the beating

Corporal punishment has long since been banished from UK schools – to the regret of some parents and politicians who seem to think inflicting pain and humiliation on kids will lead to them becoming ‘model’ citizens in adulthood. Even the latter, however, might look askance at the methods employed by one USA school to ‘control’ unruly pupils . . .
